The document discusses the transition of IT/IS from regional autonomy to a global platform at Cape plc. It describes how previously each region operated IT/IS independently with no group leadership or direction. A review found duplication of systems and a lack of standardization. The proposed plan is to implement a global MPLS network, migrate email and files to a single domain, establish a group-wide helpdesk, implement disaster recovery policies, and drive operational excellence through standardization of processes and systems. This is aimed to improve collaboration, reduce costs, enhance support and compliance, and remove regional dependencies.

Impact 2011 2667 - Developing effective services for use in critical business...Brian Petrini
A Business Process Management (BPM) engine is an automated consumer of services. How is this type of consumer different from other consumers such as user interfaces? What additional characteristics does the service need to provide to be fit for use by an automated business process. This lecture builds on the very successful Impact 2008 lecture "Exposing Services People Want to Consume" and examines how the key characteristics of the service consumer affect the requirements of the service provider. This approach is based on of hundreds of implementation years and is taught internally in IBM to our consultants.

Think2018 2314-Microservices and BPM-can they coexist?Brian Petrini
Business processes span multiple business areas, breaking barriers between teams and automating communication with siloed systems. By nature, business processes depend on multiple influences. Microservices are at the heart of modern application design, heavily focused on decoupling. Microservices architectures require the creation of truly independent components to enable greater agility, elastic scalability, and differential resilience. These are the same benefits that organizations seek for their business processes. This session discusses the implications of microservices architectures on BPM solutions: from how business processes interact with microservices, to how BPM implementations can leverage microservices principles.

5 Regions, each operating independently from an IT / Perspective for a number of years. Acquisitions along the way further complicating matters.
As expected after lifting the lid and looking at what the regions had implemented there was a massive diversity of systems implemented and quality of implementations. ERP for example, some regions were running ERP as very basic Finance applications, others had more fully integrated solutions, including Procurement, Payroll, HR, Asset Management.

For each key finding we put together a SWOT analysis, identifying the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. Recommendations on what we should do, why and how we do it.
As you can see we proposed to address the whole lot, from Networks through to Follow the Sun support and standard service delivery.
The Why we needed to do it was easy. If we wanted to achieve the strategic goals and enable the Business to Deliver Operational Excellence we had to change our approach. We needed to transformational change from Regional Autonomous IT solutions to a group wide joined up approach.
One of the first things we put together was a IT Mission Statement. This defined what the new Group IT Function was about. It made a statement to the business that we were changing and what we were going to deliver.
We then looked at the Organisational structure and defined how it should look if we wanted to transform to a Global business service provider. Key appointments were made such as the Head of Global Infrastructure who would come in and focus on some of the key projects identified.
We clearly couldn’t change everything in the first 12 months so identified the projects which would be critical to enabling the business to deliver Operational Excellence. The priority was to consolidate the 10 E-mail domains, 3 OCS / Lync environments, Regionalised data / Fileservers, 3 SharePoint instances (Intranet / CMS) down to a single environment on Office 365.
The consolidation then allowed us to use the SharePoint platform to introduce new Centres of Excellence with Subject matter experts, connect all the employees globally to the one platform, Implement ‘Cape TV’ for leaders to get messages over, and implement and Innovation portal for employees to post their ideas, with the good ones rewarded and shared.
The outcome was after 12 months we have added real value to the to Business by understanding the Business Strategy and aligning the IT/IS strategy to achieve the goals
