We get things done via social interaction and not via how we are organized.
Delivery is via XFN and not ‘the board’
To answer this question I had to simply walk around the office - I’m going to cover three key parts of FB’s culture handily printed for me on the signs that can be found around the office in our headquareeters.
The printing of these signs is itself a reflection of our culture - they were printed and applied by a designer - this is his intrepretation of the facebook culture. This is no top-down company values/mission exercise - these slogans were generated organically from the people who build products at Facebook.
So lets take a tour of three of the main parts of facebooks culture.
Our product engineers needs access to IT accessories outsode of normal working hours. IT need to be able to provide this facility but also need an element of control around it.
We set about iterating on solutions to satisfy these needs – failure is fine. But fail early, learn and fail often !
Initial solutions were cumbersome and error prone, but each iteration became more elegant / robust than the previous ones.
End solution met all criteria and was innovative – i.e. FB were the only company globally to provide such a solution to this specific needs.
Also iterated on solutions around helping people enter our buildings in a secure manner and while inside the building having smart systems to ensure your visit is efficent – where is my room? Is my room booked for me ? Etc….
Giving our business teams holistic data in minimum amount of clicks. Above example ….. Our sales teams once a week need to de-compose certain customer details. This task used to take between 40 minutes and one hour per customer. It required navigating many systems, dashboards and spreasheets and it was a once off exercise. Today our business teams get this information in one single place at the click of a button. It’s also systematically repreatable.
