The Tattoo Process and Significance Of Tattoos Essay
Significance of Tattoos
In the past, tattoos were commonly thought of as trashy or bad. One would often relate them to bikers,
rock and heavy metal stars, pirates, or gangsters. That has considerably changed over the years.
According to Swan, In 2003 approximately 40 million Americans reported to have at least one tattoo.
Today s culture is still fascinated with tattooing. In the 1990s, tattoos were the sixth fastest growing
retail behind the Internet, paging services, computer and cell phone services. 28% of adult s ages 30
39 were tattooed and that number rose to 36 percent in the 25 29 age group. 31% of the gay, lesbian
and bisexual population, regardless of age, was inked as well. Tattoos are significant because they ...

The Evaluation and Treatment of Aggression Maintained by Attention and Automatic Reinforcement

Attention and Automatic Reinforcement
The studied focused on the evaluation of treatment of aggression maintained by attention and
automatic reinforcement. A study by Iwata, Dorsey, Slifer, Bauman Richman 1982/1994, developed a
functional analysis method. The creation of functional analysis helped researchers evaluate more
effectively multiple functions of destructive behavior simultaneously. Study done by Iwata 1994

Researchers taught Ernie to ask for attention instead of engaging in aggressive behaviors by using
picture cards that displayed a form of attention from the therapist (Thompson et al.,1998).
Sessions of 30 s intervals were recorded and a picture card was placed in front of Ernie. If Ernie
handed the picture card to the therapist the therapist would give him attention. If he didn t do anything
15 s into the interval he was prompted on what to do. If he engaged in aggression behavior Ernie was
ignored. After training sessions, the researchers added extinction to FCT. Chin grinding and other
aggressive behaviors were ignored. An ABAB design was used to compare end results from FCT plus
extinction to baseline (Thompson et al.,1998).
Experiment III
This third experiment was conducted to reduce Ernie s chin grinding. It was concluded in the second
functional analysis of experiment two that Ernie s chin grinding was based on automatic
reinforcement. Ernie was provided with a similar stimulation for chin grinding. He was provided with
a device that provided similar stimulation to press against his chin. researchers used response block if
Ernie tried to chin grind on others and prompted him to use the device that was provided for him

Essay on Repairing Spinal Cord Injuries
Injuries can happen to anyone, anywhere. Injuries affect people s lives as they limit their choices,
temporarily or permanently. Most injuries are not preventable, because most happen unexpectedly. For
example, spinal cord injuries can occur if a person falls abruptly on his/her back and shatters their
spinal cord. Although injuries cannot be prevented, they can be healed. New technologies are under
development to solve major injuries, which do not yet have a cure. One of these major injuries is a
spinal cord injury.
The human body consists of many important systems. The nervous system is one of these that ensure
survival of a person. The nervous system is split into two main parts. The spinal cord and the brain
make up the Central ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This results in either a loss of sensation, or a loss of perception. According to the Rick Hansen Spinal
Cord Injury Registry, vehicle accidents make up 46% of spinal cord injuries. Acts of violence (from
knife wounds or gun shots) make up 11% of spinal cord injuries. Falls and sports injuries make up
24%, industrial accidents (damages from chemicals) make up 5%, and other injuries (such as
inflammation of the spinal cord) make up 14% of spinal cord injuries. The survival rate is reasonably
high for those suffering from spinal cord injuries, but life will never be normal again. Since the
connection between the brain and the receptor or effector is damaged, stimulations may not be
interpreted or signals may not reach the effector. This might result in loss of balance, coordination,
loss of sensation, uncontrolled movements, and paralysis.
It is important to note that nerves in the CNS do not regenerate, while nerves in the PNS do
regenerate. This is why when a person gets a cut; it completely heals in several days. But a person
with spinal cord injury cannot completely heal because spinal cord does not contain neurilemma, a
membrane that promotes regeneration of neurons. It was thought that the neurons would not
regenerate once damaged. However, research has found that they do indeed have the ability to
regenerate if scars do not obstruct the regenerative process. Scars are the result of astrocytes and

Clinical Article Summary
This article researched patients with swallowing functions over the first six months after acute stroke.
They identify the important clinical factors that associated with an increased risk of swallowing
dysfunctions and complications. The studies relied on bedside clinical examinations to diagnose
dysphagia and assessed swallowing function for two weeks after the patient s stroke. After a patient
has an acute stroke, swallowing abnormalities are a common function depending on the timing of
assessment, diagnostic methods, and criteria. If patients aren t taken care of right away with a diet,
nutrition, and hydration have the potential to cause them serious complications. Aspiration is a
common problem for patients after a stroke, and it occurs when a patient swallowing food or liquids
enters their airway and lungs. After a stroke, a patient could have silent aspiration, which food and
liquids enter the airways and lungs without the patients knowing. Reasons, why some stroke patients
have difficulty with swallowing are due to weakness or loss of feeling in the tongue, lips, palate and
throat. The voluntary of swallowing takes place in the cerebral cortex of the brain, and the region of

when people view an image they look at it in an extremely basic and simple way without looking at it
from a different perspective. Most viewers wouldn t be able to see the real reason the photographer

Hamlet and Laertes are put in the exact same situation, but both their fathers are murdered; yet they

The Causes of the Industrial Revolution Essay
The Causes of the Industrial Revolution
The causes of the Industrial Revolution were complex and remain a topic for debate, with some
historians seeing the Revolution as an outgrowth of social and institutional changes wrought by the
end of feudalism in Great Britain after the English Civil War in the 17th century. The Enclosure
movement and the British Agricultural Revolution made food production more efficient and less labor
intensive, forcing the surplus population who could no longer find employment in agriculture into the
cities to seek work in the newly developed factories. The colonial expansion of the 17th century with
the accompanying development of international trade, creation of financial markets and accumulation

Great Britain emerged from the Napoleonic Wars as the only European nation not ravaged by financial
plunder and economic collapse, as well as possessing the only merchant fleet of any useful size
(European merchant fleets having been destroyed during the war by the Royal Navy). The United
Kindom s extensive exporting cottage industries also ensured markets were already open for many
forms of early manufactured goods. The nature of conflict in the period resulted in most British
warfare being conducted overseas, reducing the devastating effects of territorial conquest affecting
much of Europe. This was further aided by Britain s geographical position an island separated from
the rest of mainland Europe.
Another theory believes that Great Britain was able to succeed in the Industrial Revolution due to the
availability of key resources it processed. It had a dense population for its small geographical size.
Enclosure of common land and the related Agricultural revolution made a supply of this labour readily
available. There was also a local coincidence of natural resources in the North of England , the
English Midlands, South Wales and the Scottish Lowlands. Local supplies of coal, iron, lead,

The Scientific Method Essay
The Scientific Method is the standardized procedure that scientists are supposed to follow when
conducting experiments, in order to try to construct a reliable, consistent, and non arbitrary
representation of our surroundings. To follow the Scientific Method is to stick very tightly to a order
of experimentation. First, the scientist must observe the phenomenon of interest. Next, the scientist
must propose a hypothesis, or idea in which the experiments will be based around. Then, through
repeated experimentation, the hypothesis can either be proven false or become a theory. If the
hypothesis is proven to be false, the scientist must reformulate his or her ideas and come up with
another hypothesis, and the experimentation begins again. This ... Show more content on

Furthermore, flies were observed laying eggs where the maggots formed. Thus, he concluded that
maggots are the result of flies, not spontaneous generation. He then called the principles behind his
experiment Metodo Scientifico or The Scientific Method.
The first cases of what would be considered properly using the Scientific Method can be found earlier,
though, back in the studies of Galileo, early in the 17th century. He first observed that heavy objects
gain speed as they fall. He then proposed, or hypothesized, that the rate of falling of massive objects
was proportional to the distance that the object has fallen. Following the Scientific Method, he tested
his hypothesis and found it to be false, since objects falling unequal distances do not fall in the same
amount of time, as his hypothesis led to. Since his hypothesis failed, he made a new one, which
proposed that the rate at which an object falls is directly proportional to the time the object has spent
falling. This was tested by rolling balls down an inclined plane and calculating the speed and time
values from those observations. Later, these experiments led to the discovery of the gravitational
constant g, and a better understanding of the Scientific Method.
The Method has been used many times since Galileo conducted his experiments, and it has been
considered a valid way of conducting experiments since

The New Zealand s Landscape
New Zealand s landscape is commonly identified by many people worldwide as being clean, fresh and
pure. The rivers, lakes, wetlands and pastoral areas within New Zealand are all unique and allow life
to flourish. However, over recent years, in some rural and urban areas, water quality has slowly
become more and more polluted as the need to use land by many growing industries has intensified
with one of New Zealand s main land users being Dairy Farming. This is a huge part of New Zealand
with dairy exports contributing $17.6 billion into the national economy in the previous season of 2013
2014. However, the problem that comes with having a higher population of cows than humans within
New Zealand (4.9 million cows) is that the amount of waste that is deposited into the soils and waters
is excessive. Even though nitrates and phosphates within the waste are essential for the nutrients of
plants and soils, immense amounts can eventually be leaked through the soils or runoff into the
streams, polluting the ground waters and rivers creating a vast problem environmentally, socially and
economically. This issue summons huge conflict and controversy as contaminated rivers can cause

The function of this anatomical structure has evolved over time and elephant s have learned to do
more and more with their trunks as the years go on. Elephants have adapted in many ways to live in
various habitats such as: open savannas, tropical and subtropical regions, grasslands, and desert
regions (IFAW). The structure of the trunk is long, ridged, and contains small sensory hairs. The trunk
functions as a nose and an organ that helps control objects in their specific environment (Haynes
1991). The main purpose of the elephants trunk is to help with the process of eating and drinking
water. Not only do they use it for feeding and drinking water, but the trunk is used for: lifting, bathing,
smelling, snorkeling and communication. (Coupe 2004). The trunk of an elephant is about six feet
long, one foot wide, and has more than 150,000 muscle bands. Elephants are born oblivious of how to
use their trunks, but once they learn they start picking up objects either to the left or right. Since
elephants evolved and now have a much smaller neck, their trunk is much longer and it helps in the
process of feeding. About 80% of an elephant s day is spent eating plants, branches, fruit, and tree
bark. The tusks and trunk help aid in the process of breaking down large plants and tree bark to make
it easier for the mouth. Elephants can stretch their trunks to reach objects 20 feet of the ground, which
in fact has helped their feeding process a great deal. In the

John Locke s Views On Private Property And Politics
Each Philosopher in the early modern world has different perspectives regarding private property and
politics in society. Although John Locke, Niccolo Machiavelli, and Karl Marx/Frederick Engels are
from different times their criticism are crucial onto the world. Being from different eras gives them a
unique perspective of how one should rule or govern. Each philosopher displays his own ideas and can
seemingly disagree with one another in their methods of government. Therefore when issues of
malicious rulers, private property, and politics arise, each philosopher handles these situations
differently in which they criticize their method to what they believe is the right way.

Machiavelli did not view all men equal. He believed that some men were a better fit to be rulers than
others. Machiavelli felt this because of the corrupt government that was taken in action at that time so
he knew that the government needed a ruler who can ensure stability and can properly manage it.
These are the characteristics that the Prince had in Machiavelli s book. An example from the book can
be seen as the Judeo Christian values as faulty in the state s success. Such visionary expectations, he
held, bring the state to ruin, for we do not live in the world of the ought, the fanciful utopia, but in the
world of is .(Machiavelli) The role of The Prince was not to gain integrity or virtue, but to guarantee
security within the government.
John Locke has a dissimilar opinion than Machiavelli. He is basically against Machiavelli because he
believes that an authoritarian government is unlawful and unjust to society. (Locke) John Locke
believes that all men are created equal, have the right to own property and are naturally moral and
rational. Locke believed in a natural right to life, liberty, and property; inherent rights to freedom and
self governance that no one can take away from people. (Locke) He thinks that people should govern
themselves and be accountable for their actions. Locke describes political power as the right to make

Choosing a career field is one of life s most important and difficult decisions. But knowing what your

Change is an unstoppable process and the fastest change in today s world is in the field of business.
Businesses have to be prepared to adopt any change that takes place. That s why I choose business
Management/Law as my career field because my family already own businesses like hotels and
convenience stores. The main reason I choose this as my career field is because there are a lots of
great opportunities available for people with business management/law degrees. Creating and running
a successful business has always been a challenge where only the strong can survive and in the world
of modern business with new advance technology managers or owners need good knowledge to top
hard training with serious set of skills. My parents always told me as successful business owners that
to be successful in running your own business you need to have more than just talent. You must have
access to ocean full of resources which will help you in making your business successful in the long
run. For that you need the proper training and knowledge that will help you select the right place of

Examples Of Appearance Vs Reality In Macbeth
Macbeth: Appearance vs. Reality
In William Shakespeare s Macbeth, many characters appear happy but in reality everything is not what
it seems. In the beginning of the book, all the characters acted as if all of them were friends, and
everyone s personalities came out.
Throughout the book the witches acted, doubtful and put forth impressions that changed the book s
setting. The witches victoriously manage to fool, cheat and provoke the bad throughout Scotland. The
witches enter the scene and they start to talk about where they want to meet Macbeth and how they
want to meet him upon the heath. Fair is foul, and foul is fair (20, 1.1.13) What is significant about
this quote is that fair means that things will look pretty and foul means that the ugly will become
beautiful. With the witches referring to themselves they are also referring that they are giving the best

Macbeth is a perfect example for appearance versus reality, because he is portrayed to the readers as

Scientists have only explored around 5% of the oceans. To put that into perspective Scientists have
better maps of venus and mars then scientists do the oceans. With that little explored space there are
many species of fish that have had to adapt to harsh living conditions. A way fish evolve to to live in
these areas is to have more defense, Some fish have venom like the box jellyfish. The Box Jellyfish is
one of the most dangerous species of jellies. Their venom can kill a fully grown human in as little as

Rogerian Death Penalty
Capital punishment, the state imposed penalty of death, continues to be one of the most controversial
issues in contemporary American public policy. Since the earliest days of its employment in the
colonial era until today, citizens have struggles with the issue of when and under what circumstances
the taking of a human life by the state can be morally or legally justified. For some opponents of the
death penalty, the simple answer is that the taking of a human life is always morally and ethically
wrong, even when conducted under the auspices of state authority as a legal punishment. In contrast,
proponents of capital punishment have contended with equal fervor that the death penalty is morally
justified as a form of retributive justice, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Abolitionist states seem unlikely to adopt capital statutes, and most death penalty states conducting
executions seem equally unlikely to eliminate the punishment. Similarly, states where the death
penalty is used frequently, such as Texas, seem certain to continue doing so, while those states that use
it infrequently., such as California, seems unlikely to begin frequent use (Hill, 2014). The utilitarian
theory would view the death penalty as moral because they look at what would make most the people
happy. Utilitarianism was founded by John Stuart Mills and Jeremy Bentham. By killing the person
who took another person s live, the victim s family would be pleased that justice was served, and the
rest of society would be happy knowing that the murderer would never be able to escape and harm
them. This theory does allow life without parole as an alternative to the death penalty, since the
murderer is still being punished and society s happiness would

Essay about Mother Courage and Capitulation
Mother Courage and Capitulation
Brecht tells the reader that capitulation is not just an idea but a feeling and the reader s objection to the
world is not as strong as it once was. He tells the reader this through Mother Courage s refusal to
capitulate through out the entire work. In today s world, people like Mother Courage cannot relate to
capitulation as a feeling because of the regulations that today s world has that Mother Courage s world
did not.
As technology advances in today s world, people place more and more restraints on individual s and
society s personal freedoms and choices, such as the decision to refuse to capitulate.

However, the people of Mother Courage s time had a different moral value system than the readers of
today. When reading Brecht s work, some readers of today are shocked by Mother Courage s refusal
to capitulate when she knows the result will be her children s deaths. Although readers in the past
realized that she made the decision for her own survival, readers of today are appalled at her choices.
Today s readers do not object to present world as much as the readers of the past did. In their world,
survival was the goal of life and as technology progresses for the readers of today, comfort and style
are the goal of life, which are qualities that are more superficial. This allows today s readers to make
few life and death decisions which allows for isolation of world events and a decreased care about the
world around them.
Capitulation is an idea that the people of today do not realize exists, much less treat it as a feeling. The
readers of the past fought to refuse to capitulate, as the reader of today passively live their lives
avoiding conflict and conforming to what society perceives as right. Mother Courage s action through
the work allows the reader to revise their options of their world and hopefully decide to fight the

output have been allocated in such a way that no one can be made better off without sacrificing the
well being of at least one person (Wisdom, V Pareto). In a situation like this it is hard for the
perspectives, like that of the Once ler and the Lorax, to have a positive outcome. If their perspectives
had been different, say like the golden rule or do no harm perspectives, things have a much better
potential to come out more ideal for everyone. As discussed in class, both of these philosophical
perspectives believe in withholding harm to one s self and to others. If these were the perspectives
taken by the Once ler and the Lorax, both would be happy, in addition to the Brown Bar ba loots, the
Swomee Swans, and the Humming Fish, but given the Pareto Optimality environment it is almost
impossible to make everyone involved happy, instead there needs to be a more costs benefits
perspective taken where things are weighed out and people pick as a whole what the best usage of
resources should be to maximize the outcome for everyone.

Long term care has many funding sources which includes government funding, privet insurance, out

So why isn t insurance for those sixty five and older the biggest payer of long term care? This
contradiction to what you would think is a result of the restrictions put on long term care by both types
of insurance. Medicaid only sets the restriction that the person must be over twenty one, have a
medical need (verified by a doctor) for help with their daily living, and the care be given in a
Medicaid certified facility. If these requirements are met Medicaid will cover nursing facilities, home
health, and some day care facilities. However, each state set their own services so the Medicaid
eligible services may be different from state to state (Meedicaid.gov, n.d). Medicare on the other hand
does not cover long term care that helps with the functioning of everyday life. Medicare only covers
subacute care weather in your home or a facility. With the requirements being that the facility must be
at a Medicare licensed facility, the patient has to be transferred from an acute hospital, the transfer
must be prescribed by a doctor, and or the patient must have been released from a hospital stay within

`` Borders `` By Thomas King
In the boiling pot of America most people have been asked what are you? when referring to one s race
or nationality. In the short story Borders by Thomas King he explores one of the many difficulties of
living in a world that was stripped from his race. In a country that is as diverse as North America,
culture and self identity are hard to maintain. King s short story Borders deals with a conflict that I
have come to know well of. The mother in Borders is just in preserving her race and the background
of her people. The mother manages to maintain her identity that many people lose from environmental
pressure.
It is hard to find someone who doesn t have a mixed heritage. In Borders Thomas King addresses this
fact through the difficulties of having inherited mixed cultures. The mother describes herself as
Blackfoot, but this description is too broad for the border police, and for the law. Similarly I have
come across the same issue. I could describe myself as Mexican, which is my race, but I could also
describe myself as an American, because that is what my passport says. In the eye of the law I am
American, but with the culture I surround myself by I am Mexican. This conflict comes from within
the mother, and also from her beliefs that she lives by. Blackfoot could easily refer to someone from
Canada, but their land was taken, thus creating this separation. The Blackfoot people are Indians
without a country, they are the indigenous people of an area, but

Disadvantages Of Arranged Marriage
It was against all scientific reason for two people who hardly knew each other, with no ties at all

Indeed arranged marriage defined by the Oxford dictionary states that an arranged marriage is a

Parents will only choose spouses that are best suited for their children, and they know that their
children will have the security and stability with their partners. Such arranged marriages prevents
unions that are grounded on pure compulsions. It is a matrimony that may not be about love but about
what is best for the couple s future. Often, in love matrimonies, the couple is too blinded by what they
perceive as love to see the faults of one another and their unsuitability. In arranged marriages it is the
parents that decide and they offer an impartial opinion on the personality of their partner. They know
what is best for their children. For example, a religious family would want their children to have the

Gun Assault Shootings
More and more often, we are saddened by the news of mass shootings. Whether it takes place in a
school or public area, these shootings are both disastrous and mortifying. Families begin to feel anger
and sadness and demand immediate justice. Although these terrible events continue to happen, there
have been no significant steps taken towards the decrease in the number of weapons; specifically,
assault rifles. This leads one to question do we need to ban the right to own such weapons? If the
possession of these weapons is not made illegal, we run the risk of another attack. A ban on assault
rifles is not the answer because they are not the cause of such events, and it is a constitutional right to
own them.
In 1994, Congress passed the Federal Assault Weapons Ban which eliminated the manufacturing of
certain assault rifles for private use (Plumer). This bill expired in 2004 and was never redrafted. Many
mass shootings in the last few years, especially ones at Virginia Tech, a movie theater in Colorado,
and Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut, Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Harvest Music
Festival in Las Vegas, First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs have stirred up the pressure to pass a
new bill.

across the sky. A shooting star perhaps or could it be something more. This is how Monsters are Due
on Maple Street begins and ends, with the unknown. Now, there is no evidence to prove or disprove
the existence of alien life forms, but one young boy puts doubt into the minds of everyone on Maple
Street. The fear, paranoia, and suspicion the characters experience is directly related to real life events
that took place in the nineteen fifties. To understand The Twilight Zone, it is important to look at the
writer and producer, Rod Serling, to gaze into his past and receive answers. Rod Serling was born
December 25, 1924 in Syracuse, New York. After graduating from high school in 1942, Serling joined
the United States Army. Experiencing the horrible acts of World War II made Serling concerned for a
moral society. Upon returning from war, Rod Serling attended Antioch College. His senior year he
began writing for CBS where he developed his unique style of writing. By the beginning of the
nineteen fifties Serling made a full time career out of his writings. He then went on to write for NBC.

Serling wrote about serious issues in society. Tired of this type of writing, Serling began writing
science fiction and fantasy. According to PBS, Science Fiction allowed Rod

Westside Connection Case
I found that the median list price in the Westside Connection neighborhood to be $123.00 per square
foot. I then took this amount and multiplied it by our subject house, which is 1,176 square feet. This
amount was then multiplied by 5% to find the depreciated value of the house. The average cost of the
land in this neighborhood was previously calculated to be an additional $22,000. Plus the landscaping
and other miscellaneous improvements to the site are estimated to be $1,000.
The last approach to valuation is the income approach. This is the dominant approach when
determining the value of an income producing which this will be. This approach determines value by
the expected future cash flows. The following is the income approach to valuation:

Rent will be collected on a monthly bases. Monthly rent was determined by multiplying the sale price
of the subject property by 1% and adding in utilities and addition fees. This amount was calculated to
be $1,485 monthly for year one. Which is high for this area. Vacancy losses were determined by
multiplying potential gross income by 10%. Miscellaneous income will be $500.00 for the first year in
fees for maintenance, repairs, and so on. This amount will be charged every two years. This resulted in
an Effective Gross Income of $16,535.06. Operating expenses are broken in two categories: fixed
expenses and variable expenses. In the fixed expenses I estimate yearly taxes and insurance based
upon local rates. For variable expenses, I will not incur any utility or garbage collection expenses as
the tenants will be paying these. The repairs and expenses were estimated to be $250 each and
incurred every other year for $150 thereafter. This results in our total operating expenses. The capital
expenditures equal our tenant improvements of

Inhumanity In Rwanda Genocide
The Belgians act of inhumanity through the discrimination of the Hutu is the main reason that the
Rwandan genocide took place. In the article titled, Rwanda Genocide of 1994, the author begins by
introducing the background of Rwanda: The three groups, Tutsi, Hutu, and Twa lived together for
centuries. Belgium ruled Rwanda in the 19th century and granted the Tutsi social power over the
Hutu. ( Rwanda Genocide ). For instance, the Belgian colonizers threw the Hutu into agriculturist and
other primary jobs which did not earn them enough to support themselves. Tutsis were given complete
control over the government. This cruel classification of the Hutus directly relates to the different acts
of inhumanity present before the genocide even started.

Next, the scientist must propose a hypothesis, or idea in which the experiments will be based around. He then called the principles behind his experiment Metodo Scientifico or The Scientific Method. The first cases of what would be considered properly using the Scientific Method can be found earlier, though, back in the studies of Galileo, early in the 17th century. He first observed that heavy objects gain speed as they fall. He then proposed, or hypothesized, that the rate of falling of massive objects was proportional to the distance that the object has fallen. Following the Scientific Method, he tested his hypothesis and found it to be false, since objects falling unequal distances do not fall in the same amount of time, as his hypothesis led to. Since his hypothesis failed, he made a new one, which proposed that the rate at which an object falls is directly proportional to the time the object has spent falling. This was tested by rolling balls down an inclined plane and calculating the speed and time values from those observations. Later, these experiments led to the discovery of the gravitational constant g, and a better understanding of the Scientific Method. The structure of the trunk is long, ridged, and contains small sensory hairs. The trunk functions as a nose and an organ that helps control objects in their specific environment (Haynes 1991). Since the earliest days of its employment in the colonial era until today, citizens have struggles with the issue of when and under what circumstances the taking of a human life by the state can be morally or legally justified. For some opponents of the death penalty, the simple answer is that the taking of a human life is always morally and ethically wrong, even when conducted under the auspices of state authority as a legal punishment. The utilitarian theory would view the death penalty as moral because they look at what would make most the people happy. Utilitarianism was founded by John Stuart Mills and Jeremy Bentham. In a country that is as diverse as North America, culture and self identity are hard to maintain. King s short story Borders deals with a conflict that I have come to know well of. The mother in Borders is just in preserving her race and the background of her people. The mother manages to maintain her identity that many people lose from environmental pressure. It is hard to find someone who doesn t have a mixed heritage. In Borders Thomas King addresses this fact through the difficulties of having inherited mixed cultures. The mother describes herself as Blackfoot, but this description is too broad for the border police, and for the law. Similarly I have come across the same issue. I could describe myself as Mexican, which is my race, but I could also describe myself as an American, because that is what my passport says. In the eye of the law I am American, but with the culture I surround myself by I am Mexican. This conflict comes from within the mother, and also from her beliefs that she lives by. This leads one to question do we need to ban the right to own such weapons? If the possession of these weapons is not made illegal, we run the risk of another attack.
