Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky Essay
Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky was born on June 15, 1882, in Oranienbaum (now Lomonosov), Russia.
He was the third out of four boys. His mother, Anna Kholodovsky, was a talented and accomplished
pianist and singer. In his autobiography, Stravinsky attributes his score reading abilities to her. His
father, Feodor, was of Polish descent and was a famous operatic bass. His family moved to St.
Petersburg to accommodate his career. In the summers the Stravinsky s traveled around the Europe.
They visited family and went to many heath resorts due to Igor and his brother having lung problems.
They were especially prone to illnesses such as tuberculosis. He began his musical training when he
was nine with piano lessons. Through the years he also took lessons in harmony and counterpoint.
Although his parents provided him with musical training and were musicians themselves, ... Show

Hollywood in 1941. During World War II he composed more compositions. In 1942, Stravinsky
composed Circus Polka. Circus Polka was used for the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus.
He also composed the Four Norwegian Moods, The Symphony in Three Movements, and Ebony
Concerto. In 1944, he was almost arrested for his rearrangement of the Star Spangled Banner at a
performance in Boston. Orpheus, a ballet composed by Stravinsky, was premiered at the New York
City Center. He also conducted a revised version of Symphonies of Wind Instruments. Symphonies of
Wind Instruments was put together by Robert Craft. In the early years of living in America, Craft lived

Queer Representation Of All Ages Media Essay
Queer Representation in All Ages Media Growing up as a Catholic, Puerto Rican gay boy in the 90s
and early 2000s, I struggled to discover my queer identity as well as queer representation in the media
I consumed. Being gay was something that was never discussed. If it was brought up, it was usually in
hushed tones (I remember being introduced to my uncle s close friend each holiday) or as something
negative (I still remember the sting of being called a faggot in elementary school). This reflected
exactly how homosexuality was portrayed in media at the time. Queer characters and homosexuality
were at best portrayed in codified, blink and you ll miss it labels and affectations, or at worst,
something to laugh at, pity or even hate. As someone who still regularly watches reads comics,
watches Saturday morning cartoons and plays video games, it is so exciting to discover the lengths of
progress that has been made in queer representation in all ages media. In this paper I hope to detail the
highs and lows of LGBTQ representation in all ages media and highlight the impact of media
representation. Before celebrating the strides of queer representation in all ages media, it is important
to look back at queer representation in the past. The late film scholar Vito Russo painstakingly
researched the evolution of queer representation in cinema in his landmark book The Celluloid Closet.
In both the book and the documentary based of the book, Russo details the

Creating A Marketing Plan For Mba Capstone
1. The major project for this course is creating a marketing plan. Provide company name, a description
and URL, if available. You need to either select a small company or small non profit that is already in
business; however, if you work for a large company and would like to focus on that then concentrate
on one small part; for example: your department. This project will become part of your portfolio
created in the MBA Capstone course so create it for something that can be shared (with whom you
choose to share it with). For example: if you create a plan for your department and are sharing
confidential information you won t want to use it later in the Capstone class. Live on Grades A startup

from filtration to treatment. On the river banks of Merrimack, Mills succeed in developing the first

Loneliness And Isolation In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
In this excerpt of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, the scene reveals the creature s desperation to befriend
the DeLaceys to escape his loneliness. After approaching the old DeLacey, he expresses his yearning
for companionship and protection from the family. However, Felix, Safie, and Agatha suddenly enter
the hovel and confront the creature. The horror (96) on the faces of his friends and being struck
violently with a stick (97) show the rejection that the creature experiences. His only link to humanity
is broken and he is isolated from society. This passage exhibits the central theme of loneliness as
experienced by the creature. The excerpt shows that loneliness is caused by rejection from society,
companionship is desired, and isolation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is isolated from society, and it is proven when the DeLacey family rejects the creature for his
appearance. This passage parallels the creature s first rejection by his own creator, Victor
Frankenstein. Due to the his ugliness, Victor abandons his creation because of his disgust (35). As a
result, the creature is left to explore the world on his own without guidance. His appearance causes
him to be feared by nearly everyone he sees, and thus, he is isolated. Earlier, when the creature
encounters an old man, he shrieked loudly (73) and ran out of his hut. His physique is such a cause of
alarm for others, that even strangers leave their houses in fear. However, this passage shows the
kindness that the blind DeLacey showed. Since he could not see, the old DeLacey was the only person
who would listen to the creature, because he could not judge his appearance. He had empathy. Still,
the creature faced rejection. Subsequently, he believed that solitude [was his] only consolation (61).
The creature used isolation as a coping mechanism for his constant rejection. However, this only
contributed to his loneliness and suffering. The creature even compares himself to the devil (93) to
emphasise his seclusion. He uses this analogy to show his despair because even the enemy of God had
his companions (93). Frankenstein s creation is physically and emotionally alone because he is the
only one of his kind. He is not accepted because of his deformities. Therefore, rejection from society,
is the cause of his

Education Is An Important Factor
In our society today, education has become an important factor in our live. The ways we have
increasingly progressed over the many years have influenced our perspectives of what education really
is. Although education is thought to mean acquiring knowledge obtained from textbooks and school, I
believe that it is one of a broader sense; allowing not only students, but everyone to expand their
experiences, thus creating what Spayde and Kagen would consider real world education. In my
personal point of view, I have found myself being engrained the ideology of education being all about
the 4.0 grade at school, taking the Advanced Placement Classes, and being accepted to the best Ivy
League schools. Growing up, society as well as my parents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

A huge part of education is learning by the experiences we acquire outside of our classes. It becomes
simplified into the informal education we get from other. As Hart has described, students are
struggling with the world that they live in today, for our education system is not preparing students for
the outside world, rather, it focuses on specific areas that society believes to be important. This leads
to a lack of general knowledge, thus creating students educated in some sense, but ignorant in the
other. Newman believes that the need for a diverse field in education, allows students to be surrounded
by different interests; learning and assisting one another. Students are able to understand the material
without fully going in depth with the information, and by doing so; they are able to grow and form
their own opinions. By allowing such education and providing a well balanced education, people are
able to become more knowledgeable and well rounded. The primary purpose of any education is to
produce intellectual people, one who are understanding, and opinionated about the world they live in.
Similar in thought to Newman, Spayde believes the education doesn t thoroughly allow you to
understand the concepts of life. He believes that there are many other factors out in the world where
you can pick up such knowledge along the way. It is the people that you surround yourself with that
allow you to become much more

Anatomy Of Epidemics
Editions are being revised, diagnoses are increasing, yet the behavior of Americans seems to be
remaining the same. In no math class do those things add up. The discrepancy does not lie in the math,
it lies within outside influences. As the number of possible diagnosable mental disorders increases, so
does the amount of mentally ill Americans. Pathologizing the normal and increased pharmaceutical
use has led to widespread increase of incorrect mental illness diagnosis. The Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as defined by the American Psychiatric Association is the
standard classification of mental disorders used by mental health professionals in the United States

To this day no scientific tests have been done to support the existence of ADHD. As it stands the
diagnostic criteria for Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder are essentially reflective of normal
childhood behavior. The behaviors that someone needs to elicit in order to be categorized with
attention deficit hyperactive disorder, include behaviors such as: often has difficulties organizing tasks
and activities ; often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental
effort ; often loses things necessary for tasks or activities ; is often on the go ; often talks excessively ;
and often interrupts or intrudes on others (American Psychiatric Association, 2014). These criteria for
ADHD are found in most children but not all children have Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders has taken normal behaviors of a child and
reclassified them to be characterized into a disorder. If psychiatry was against pathologizing normal
behavior then disorders like ADHD which are essentially just descriptions of normal childhood
behavior would be eliminated. Children would therefore be put on medication less often and therefore
would lead to less serious disorders based off of the findings of Whitaker. Attention Deficit
Hyperactive Disorder is

Introduction
This paper will analyze Shriners Hospital for children, a non profit hospital system owned by Shriners
International, through the theoretical lens of Bolman and Deals Leadership Frameworks (1997). This
paper will define structural and symbolic aspects of the organization, analyze strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats through structural assessment to identify growth and risk potential, and
propose possible solutions for identified issues.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is a non profit hospital system that maintains 22 hospitals for children
in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. 18 of the hospitals provide orthopedic specialization; three
hospitals focus on burn care, and one hospital offers burn, spinal, and orthopedic care. The first
hospital was opened in Shreveport Louisiana, in 1922 by Shriners International, a fraternal
organization for men. The hospitals provide cutting edge care for a variety of condition, actively
engage in research for cures to childhood diseases and improvement to orthopedic and burn treatments
(Schumaker, 2005).

The Game Of Basketball And The Engine
The game of basketball and the engine have been around for a long time. The game of basketball was
invented in December 1891 and the engine was invented in 1680. Although they seem completely
different they are not. Basketball and the engine are similar regarding their equipment and supplies
needed, the procedures that take place, and the way they enhance one s life. The game of basketball
was intended to condition young athletes. It started as a basic game, and as the years progressed,
officials added rules that made the game how it is today. The game is played with no more than five
players from each team at a time. This allows you to have team mates but not have too many people
playing at one time. The engine was invented to make life and transportation easier. Over the years
engines have become more complex and powerful which allows for more speed and better vehicles.
Basketball may seem like a complicated sport but it is not unless one makes it complicated. In the
game of basketball there is the basket which has a back board made of a sturdy glass and a net made
from special rope. Then there is the basketball which is made of rubber with a leather cover for grip.
The players wear shorts and a jersey with a number and sometimes the last name of the player on the
back and the same number and team name on the front. The player will also wear a special shoe made
for the sport. The shoes are made from different materials, and the bottom of the shoe has a good,

To Kill A Mockingbird Loss Of Innocence Essay
One s purity is a prized possession that is difficult to abdicate. Even so, the loss of such innocence
allows one to grow up and mature into an individual capable of experiencing new ambitious struggles.
In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee identifies Jem as the symbolic mockingbird due to
the experiences he encounters that cause his innocence to be lost.
Jem s characteristic of concern for Scout s desires leads to his finding of perilous situations that
corrupt his inculpability. As Jem is growing older he decides to follow in his father s footsteps and
assist Scout more and more by giving advice and helping her out in tenacious situations. After Jem
rolls Scout into the Radley s yard and asks why she did not grab the tire on her way out, she replies
with, Why don t you get it (42). Being the older brother, he believes it is his obligation to help her in
such situations. Although this is one of his first encounters with such a pressing issue placed in his
grasp, he learns that Scout needs not only Atticus s guidance, but his as well. Thus exhibiting the fact
that the loss of innocence is sometimes needed in order to develop into a capable adult.

Assignment 2 The Nyonya Shop (Final Draft)
Up close, the shop is surprisingly grand and majestic, unlike the view I had from a distance with its
baby blue and lemon green pastel exterior reminding me of a newborn s nursery. Its vivid colours
makes it easy to spot along the mundane East Coast Road, but the golden carvings of a wide range of
flora and fauna that I now see in fine detail, add to this notion of grandeur. The shades grew bolder as
I approach, shifting from the sweet candy like pastel colour to the splash of persian blue which
highlights the ambience of Asian culture around the shop. The numbers 1928 boldly stand out in white
stucco above a dark green awning giving a sense of antiquity. Encrusting that curious date are a
collection of geometric patterns which match the lemon green window sills differing only in the rich
pink added to accentuate the significance of the numbers.

Caution is advised, as running a restaurant is a difficult task, and providing this service through a
concessionaire may be advisable. Another option is to use vending machines for snack foods and
drinks. Providing research services for a fee can provide additional revenue. If a museum has a
product or collection that the public may have interest in learning more about, there may be an
opportunity to charge a fee to conduct the research. Charging a fee for facility rentals is another
program option. Offering to host meetings, banquets, or parties for a fee may be logical if the facilities
are adequate. Size and time commitments would have to be analyzed against expenses. Instituting
after school daycare programs may be an option to attract more visitors. Having an efficiently run
after school program that is unique and appealing to children can bolster earned revenues. With
childcare hard to find for many parents, this option may be appealing. The Exploration Place in Prince
George offers numerous child programs including after school daycare. Not only can these programs
bolster revenues, but they can create goodwill and exposure in the community as well. Offer unique
activities that are associated with your museum s experience. In many cases, museums offer only
static collections and exhibits. If there is an activity that your museum could offer that ties in with the
theme, more visitors may be attracted. For instance, if your

Monty Python And The Holy Grail 1975 Directed By Terry...
The infamous British film known as Monty Python and the Holy Grail 1975 directed by Terry Gilliam
and Terry Jones, was considered a cult classic among the comedy genre. But what made it so
significant among other films during that era, and why is does it still stand the test of time? Classical
films were originally considered more than just another form of entertainment. This form of media
allowed artist to visually express their personal views through the big screen. Some film makers tend

It is a reaction to the concept of modernism; a style or movement in the arts that aims to depart
significantly from classical and traditional forms in the early 20th century. Postmodern lacks a precise
definition, but share many aspects of modernism. They are fueled by post industrialization, and driven
by late capitalism. However, there are a few distinctions that make it quite deliberate from its
predecessor. According to Fredric Jameson s theory, the experience of an art is mediated by
technology and/or capitalism so we no longer experience things as natural (Jameson 64). In other

postmodernism is the refusal to think historically, and disdain for the thought of underlying reality as

within cinema. It is all about recycling materials in order to reproduce for the interest of the individual

Summary Of Coyote And The Enemy Aliens
Japanese Canadians Aliens?
Coyote and the Enemy Aliens is a satirical commentary that effectively expounds on the intense
objectification and dehumanization of Japanese Canadians during the colonial Canadian era. By
depicting the grotesque living conditions, the Japanese were subjected to, King is able to critique the
racist perspectives of the Canadian society. King condemns the actions of colonial white men,
depicting them as creatures engulfed in moral blindness that strive to fabricate an ideal white world.
Moreover, King vividly portrays the idea of social dynamics, expounding on the helplessness of
Citizens against dominant political powers. King also introduces an idea of conformity, showcasing
how citizens gradually adapt to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The climax of the prose illustrates the disturbing elements of socio political history in Canada. The
political entities stand in the near vicinity of the vehicle, singing O Canada. and waving flags .
Through the depiction of this disturbing image, King criticizes racist political leaders in Canada that
justified their crimes cemented on ideals of nationalism reflecting on the moral conscience of colonial
Canada. The insensitivity of white men is expounded in their embarkment of engineering the atomic
bomb. In the near conclusion of the story, Coyote travels to Los Alamos to make the world safe for
freedom . The white men euphemistically portray the Manhattan project (in Los Alamos) as a catalyst
of peace and prosperity. However, this notion is ironic as this project engineered a mass destruction
weapon leading innocent people being evaporated in a second. King inputs this powerful idea to
expose the Hippocratic nature of white men in that era, who patronized themselves as saints, but in
reality, were responsible for the construction of the most dangerous military weapon.
The intensely grotesque perspectives and actions committed by coyote are a striking testament to how
the general population was able to be manipulated based on ludicrous perceptions of Japanese
propagated in Canada. King employs the dim witted character of Coyote to satirize racist Canadian
politicians and comment on their prejudiced notions

Constitution Of Ideas
The Constitution of Ideas
An optimist is someone thinks on planet number five ... mankind will be less bloody. A pessimist is
one who thinks otherwise (225) From different perspectives, two can view the same thing but see it
drastically different. Thus, many oppositions exist throughout The Unbearable Lightness of Being are
born, including faithfulness and infidelity, the the dichotomous poles of human existence, and the
eternal return or a single existence. But behind all of these oppositions stands the opposition of
lightness and heaviness as the building block of all of them. It is the atom behind all the molecules.

The concept of eternal return is first introduced through warfare analogies, where a war between two
African kingdoms in the fourteenth century happened only once and that it will [turn] into mere
words, theories, lighter than feather (3, 4), whereas if the [war] were to recur eternally , it will be
considered eternal return and it would become a solid mass, permanently protuberant (4, 4).
Something that happened only once will be lost in its inanity to history, but something that reoccurs
gains weight and becomes permanent. Thus, something could only be classified as eternal return if it
occurs endlessly and adds weight in history. Kundera reiterates by saying that a Robespierre who
occurs only once is history and a Robespierre who eternally returns, chopping off French heads (4)
have infinite differences. Using Robespierre and his shocking guillotine in a humorous context of
eternal return, Kundera manages to express his idea of weight in eternal return as well as mock history
of its foolishness. Throughout the book, however, the idea of eternal return comes as the motif of birds
of fortuity, as Tereza felt The birds of fortuity had alighted once more , and that she was impelled by
the birds of fortuity fluttering down on her shoulder (75, 52). The symbol of a bird to embody

How Does Quoyle Create Tension In The Shipping News
Throughout chapters 17 22 of The Shipping News, Quoyle learns about and reflects on the unsavoury
past of his family and comes to peace with it, allowing him to move forward in his journey of building
self confidence, by being resilient, opinionated and assertive in his expression of his opinions. Quoyle
becomes more self assured and solid, and no longer sees himself, as a distant figure (Proulx 2) when
he chooses to resist being negatively influenced, emotionally or otherwise, by the discovery that his
ancestors were pirates. On the contrary, he is disgusted by their ways, a feeling that distances him
from external influences. He describes his family as Ancestors whose filthy blood ran in his veins,
who murdered the shipwrecked, drowned their unwanted brats, fought and ... Show more content on

Pointed sticks, hardened in the fire (Proulx 174). His use of the word filthy to describe his family
shows that he feels empowered to make and worthy of making judgments of others. Others no longer

toward allowing himself to feel a wider range of emotions than he did in the past, including disgust as
well as frustration. Disgust and frustration often stem from disagreeing with another person. Quoyle
did not feel these emotions in the past because he did not feel that he had the right to disagree with
others due to his lack of esteem for his own thoughts. In this section, Quoyle disagrees with and is
disgusted by his ancestors, and becomes frustrated with Bunny and Billy Pretty. Quoyle does not

The Importance Of Cursive Writing
Should cursive writing still be taught in school? In the fifth century, cursive writing was established by
the Romans Empire in Europe. Because before they don t have phone or computer with them to get

important. Cursive writing should taught in school because it s helps kids to write fast, helps kids

connects student to the past. William said children may teach to read more sasaki especially dyslexia

be focusing on keyboarding skills and other computer based communication (Cindi 2014). Many

that print is easier to read that cursive, but again graham say the research isn t definitive on this either.
Cursive writing is a faster way of writing than printing. Because kids brain involved in thinking

enable them to finish their lask. Copying text like a poem helps kids to internalize (Cindi, 2014). It can

The Mexican Revolution Of Mexico And The United States Essay
During the Mexican Revolution there were many prominent figures that emerged during the long
struggle. Some of the figures had a positive impact on the region, and some others a very negative
impact on the people of Mexico and their quest for an uncorrupted government. One figure that stands
out in the border region between Mexico and The United States during this time is General Francisco
Pancho Villa. To understand Pancho Villa s significant role during this uprising it is important to
understand who Villa was prior to the revolution, and what acts lead to his rise to power.
Francisco Pancho Villa (born Doroteo Arango on June 5th, 1878) was known as a bandit prior to his
life as a Mexican General. Villa was born to sharecropper parents on a hacienda in San Juan Del Rio,
Durango, Mexico. After the death of his father, Villa only in his teens became the head of his family.
Villa soon found himself on the run from the law and the Haciendas owner after he shot the man in the
foot after an altercation over Villa s sister; this is what led to him initially becoming an outlaw. While
on the run as a fugitive Villa adapted other well known bandito ways of making money including
robbing haciendas, and sticking up wealthy mine owners, this is also when he officially dropped
Arango and only used Francisco Pancho Villa (Katz, 1998). Some bits of folklore can be found when
describing Villa s actions during this time period. There are tales of him acting like a Robin

Sears Holdings Corporation and Denial Class Discussion Essay
Denial Class Discussion Questions I would suggest that you develop notes for these.
1. What is denial and what problems does it lead to?
Denial is how we pay attention to everything today; we are constantly making unconscious choice
about what to notice, and not to notice. It means when something happened and the person lies to
cover up or used to escape from the truth, According to the book, Denial is the unconscious calculus
that if an unpleasant reality were true, it would be too terrible, so therefore it cannot be true. Denial
today is all around us, if we ignore the obvious at a certain moment because we simply don t want to
confront it, it might lead to more problems. The longer we ignore it the more serious it ... Show more

when the developer asked for longer leases, A P refused to sign them and shut itself out of the quickly

Innocence And The Death Penalty Analysis
In Richard Dieter s article Innocence and the Death Penalty: The Increasing Danger of Executing the
Innocent , he shares the mistakes and the dangers of the death penalty. Capital punishment had gotten
more and more controversial during the 90 s because of the risk of innocence. There was no DNA
evidence during this time to prove if a person was innocent or guilty, so when putting them to death
there was still a possibility that they were incorrect on the verdict. Today there are DNA tests that help
prove whether someone is innocent or guilty, but it cannot bring those back who have been executed
unjustly because of the death penalty. Lack of witnesses, the pressure from the public to solve the
case, and limited resources for the defendant were common obstacles and quickened them to be
charged as a suspect and then sentenced them to death based on the crime they committed . As
technology advanced with DNA evidence, some criminals who were on death row were let out of ...

The American Civil Liberties Union believes that the death penalty is unjust and goes against a lot of

what is stated in the Constitution. Executions planned out spectacles and people gather around to

Perception Is A Important Process For Human Beings
Countless data pass through our minds every single moment. Consider about height, colour, size and
even message from actual language or body language, those are information we perceive everyday as
usual. Perception is a very important process for human beings because it is a process that allow us to
experience any data around us such as smell, touch, taste, temperature and so on. (Otara, 2011) As we
perceive things, we collect data, we analyse it and interpret data in our minds in order to give the
reaction back. However, sometimes we might face some situation that we think we already have a
conclusion or outcome to some cases or some particular situations in our mind without receiving all of
the information first. This cognitive process is called bias which means the process of using shortcut
to see the outcome based on personal preferences without using all of information. This is not
unfamiliar process to human beings because this process used to help us in order to survive through
many eras. (Ross, 2011) For instance, you see a black shadow diving to your head so, you duck your
head to avoid it. After that, you see that it s just a bird. (Ross, 2008) Before you duck your head, you
didn t look at it well enough that means you didn t use all of information before react to the situation
also you might face with these experiences before so you know it is safe to avoid at first. However,
your bias is still useful because what if it s not a bird but a heavy object? You could

Marxism in The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Whoever controls the means of production in society controls the society. (Martin) Marxism can be
used to explain and inspect actions, characters, settings, and ideas in a multitude of texts. In the novel
The Kite Runner written by Khaled Hosseini, the Marxist views on the class system, religion, and the
ownership of goods are prominent and introduce an interesting and captivating perspective to the
story.
The following questions are answered within this essay through the point of view of a Marxist: Should
we die without cause? Who gives a group all of the power? In the Muslim culture, how does the
dominance of money and power prevail? What defines social morality? Do our religious belief give us
power over others? The idea behind social ranking is that one s values as a human are based on the
class one belongs to. In the Afghan culture, there are two main classes: the Hazara and the Pashtun.
Hazaras are Shiite Muslims and Pashtuns are Sunni Muslims. The Pashtuns believe that the Hazaras
are lower people because they are not native to Afghanistan. Amir, the narrator of the novel, is the son
of a wealthy businessman living in the city of Kabul. Amir is a Pashtun. His best friend is the son of
one of his family s servants, a young boy named Hassan. Hassan is a Hazara. Though these two
characters Hosseini is able to identify the subjects of child abuse and suffering in Afghanistan.

Ignaz Semmelweis
Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis was born on the 1st of July 1818. He was one of the most important
medical figures of his time. His discovery concerning the prevention of puerperal fever shown in him
many qualities such as brilliant fact finding, logical analysis such as using statistics to come to answer
and keen thoughtful reasoning. The highly successful hand washing made him a knowledge growing,
leading star in antisepsis during his era (known as the prebacteriological era), in spite of much
opposition and resistance. Semmelweis was born in Tabán. The fifth child of a rich shopkeeper of

This startling hypothesis led Semmelweis to devise a novel system of prophylaxis ( to stop rather than
cure or treat a disease) in May 1847. Realizing that the smell from the hands of the dissectors reflected
the presence of the incriminated poisonous matter, he suggested the use of a solution of chlorinated
lime for washing hands between autopsy work and examination of patients.Despite early protests,
especially from the medical students and hospital staff, Semmelweis was able to enforce the new
procedure vigorously; and in barely one month the mortality from puerperal fever declined in his
clinic from 12.24 percent to 2.38 percent. Semmelweis refused to communicate his method officially
to the learned circles of Vienna, nor was he eager to explain it on paper. However finally two articles
were wrote in his behalf, explaining the etiology of puerperal fever and strongly recommending use of
chlorinated lime as a preventive. Although foreign physicians and the leading members of the
Viennese school were impressed by Semmelweis apparent discovery, the papers failed to generate
widespread support. During 1848 Semmelweis gradually widened his prophylaxis to include all
instruments coming in contact with patients in labor. His statistically documented success in basically

Athletic Trainers Role In Athletic Training
Athletic trainers in today s sports world receive pressure everyday when it comes to deciding when to
return an athlete to play. Athletic trainers have such a big responsibility when it comes to the health
and care of the athletes that they work with. Trainers are the first person that an athlete will see when
they become injured during a game, and in most cases when the athlete performs rehab. The athlete
depends on the athletic trainer to diagnose his or her injury, and then help him or her recovery to pre
injury health. With this responsibility also comes consequence. If an athletic trainer returns an athlete

This is especially the case if the game is in progress in the athlete has an important role. Each athlete
that comes off the field or court after being hit in the head must go through a cognitive test called a
Standardized Assessment of Concussion (SAC). This test is used immediately after the head trauma to
test the athlete on their Strength, Memory, Coordination, Concentration, and Physical Movements.
The SAC only takes approximately 5 to 7 minutes to administer (Straus). The problem that athletic
trainers face with testing an athlete after a head impact is dealing with the coach. When an athlete is
required to perform a 5 to 7 minute test in the middle of a game when the coach needs them, can cause
the coach to get very aggravated and be right in the ear of the trainer. It can put stress and pressure on
the trainer, which could then cause them to make an error during the testing of the athlete. SAC has
value in helping sports medicine professionals in detecting and quantifying acute cognitive
impairment on the sports sideline, particularly in identifying concussions in the 90 to 95% of cases
(Straus). If a coach distracts the trainer from performing the best SAC test for an athlete that
percentage is going to drop, and the trainer could miss evaluate the athlete. This could place the
athlete at risk if they are allowed to return to play too soon, and make the athletic trainer liable if that
athlete gets seriously injured. Sideline evaluations can be a big factor on the pressure that athletic

The New Deal A Good Deal
Was the New Deal a Good Deal?
Hunter Simmons
The New Deal, introduced to get America out of the Great Depression, was a good deal. It brought the
US out of a massive hole of poverty by creating jobs and creating regulations to help the economy
stabilize. The Stock Market Crash of 1929 can be blamed for the start of the Great Depression, after
millions went into panic when their investments fell through. After Woodrow Wilson failed to help the
working class in a worsening economy, Americans looked for new hope in Franklin D. Roosevelt,
elected in 1933, to help them come out of this terrible depression. He responded by creating numerous
administrations and programs over the course of 5 years. These programs were designed to create
unskilled labor and support the poor to help stimulate the economy again. His plan succeeded up to
the second world war, where economy started to boom when a higher work force was needed. The
first step Roosevelt took to create economic stability was to create jobs. Administrations such as the
Public Works Administration created millions of jobs for the unemployed, including building many
bridges, hospitals, schools, and more (New Deal Public Works Administration projects). The Civilian
Conservation Corps also created unskilled labor such as planting trees and building state parks, which
in turn helped the environment and conserve resources. By lowering the unemployment rate,
Roosevelt helped the US get back on their feet. Some say that

An Analysis Of Flowers For Algernon
Flowers for Algernon is a very intriguing novel about Charlie Gordon, a mentally challenged adult.
Throughout the novel, there are numerous references to Carlie s past with his family. His past
intelligence is what primarily causes him to undergo his treatment. However, his past relationship with
his family, prominently his mother, alter his abilities to develop emotional connections. His newfound
intelligence also complicates his abilities to reconnect with his family and friends from before.
Therefore, Charlie s past had a very powerful influence on Charlie during and after the experiment.
During the experiment, Charlie s intelligence level heavily influences how he is treated. Before he
becomes an intellectual, Charlie is treated with great disrespect by his acquaintances. Charlie s
coworkers used the phrase pulling a Charlie Gordon quite often when insulting another coworker.
They use this term to describe a person as unintelligent, or stupid, much like they label Charlie.
Initially, Charlie does not understand what the term means, but as he becomes smarter, he does, and it
upsets him greatly. Charlie s change of opinions affects his relationships and bonds. Before Charlie
went through the experiment, he believes his coworkers, Frank and Joe, are his best friends, as they
take him to parties with them. As Charlie progresses, he realizes they only keep him around to
embarrass him, and for a good laugh. (4) Suddenly, during his progression, Charlie s co workers take a

The Ghost s Deception in Shakespeare s Hamlet Essay
The Ghost s Deception in Hamlet
The Ghost in Hamlet cleared out the event that Hamlet was uncertain of. The spirit clarified the death
of King Hamlet, and caused Hamlet to perform his evil deeds. The Ghost s request to avenge him
caused the death of Hamlet s family, friends, and eventually himself; therefore, the spirit can be
viewed as evil because it failed the four tests that was set by Lewes Lavater and the Church.
Lewes Lavater describes how the church determines if a ghost is evil or good. The first description is
good spirits terrify initially, but ultimately comfort. The spirit does not cause comfort to Hamlet.
Throughout the play, the Ghost causes trouble among the characters. According to Eleanor Prosser:

The source of all these problems is the Ghost. Therefore, the Ghost is evil because it has caused the

his private revenge through Hamlet.
The second way to determine if a Ghost is evil is good spirits associate with light; evil with darkness.
When the Ghost appeared to Hamlet, the environment in the play was dark. The darkness is not only
associated with the environment but also to the Ghost s words about scripture.
But that is what we are warned the Devil will do: in order to disguise himself as an angel of light, he

Essay about Richard Hofstadter s The Age of Reform
Richard Hofstadter s The Age of Reform
In 1955, Richard Hofstadter wrote his Pulitzer Prize winning book The Age of Reform, about the
Gilded Age. Hofstadter s arguments about the Populist and Progressive movements and their origins
started debate and renewed scholarship on the Populist and Progressive movements. Many historians
did not agree with Hofstadter s arguments and published their own papers stating their conclusions
based on their own research. This scenario occurs all the time in the history field. One historian writes
a book or paper and other historians accept or reject his arguments by doing their own research and
making their own conclusions. Many historians wrote about the Progressive era after Hofstadter did.

He argues that for the early part of the history of the United States the culture of the nation centered on
the farmer and the agrarian myth. The agrarian myth is that the independent family farmer was what
drove the nation. Hofstadter states that framers enjoyed a certain privileged status in society. He
argues that by the late 1870s this image or status was in decline and that farmers began to resent this
loss of status. He asserts that the Populist movement was born out of this resentment. He explains that
this resentment towards city dwellers those whose opinion of farming was declining was why many
Populists described the city as crime infested and disliked immigrants. He viewed populists as being
hysterical, raving, and very nativist. He says that the ideas expressed by the Populists made their way
to the cities where professionals latched on to them. These professionals he argued felt the pinch from
immigrants and crime. These professionals became the members of the Progressive movement. He
viewed progressives as more practical, less hysterical, and more patronizing. To Hofstadter the
Populist and Progressive movements were borne out of a status revolution in the United States.
Hofstadter presents an interesting argument to explain Populism and Progressivism. At the root of his
argument is that people are more likely to feel resentment when their status is at stake rather then
when their income or jobs are. This is an interesting

Representation In The Episcopal Church
In the Episcopal Church, the ongoing discussion around who can participate in the Eucharist
demonstrates that the church is led by practice, rather than theology. In recent years there has been a
significant volume of writing generated in the Episcopal Church about what is known as Open Table .
Currently this is an issue in which practice differs in many churches from the official policy. The
discussion and corresponding practice represent the latest step of a historical trend in the church
towards fullest possible participation in its practice of the sacrament of Communion. The existence of
canon law and the clear and conscious disregarding of that part of the canon illustrates that practice is
not always determined by either the law, or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition to standards for ecumenical shared worship and the inclusion of children, another series of
shifts took place in the types of participation possible for lay people. First lay people were permitted
to read scripture during the service, something previously restricted to ordained persons. Then lay
readers were permitted to serve the Chalice at the Eucharist. More recently these ministries became
separate. Finally eucharistic visitors were permitted, taking communion out to members of the
community who could not be in church to participate. All of these changes share a deep regard for the
importance of participation in the sacrament, and a simultaneous tendency to deconstruct or disregard

Great Britain Research Paper
Great Britain is a country with rich history and a culture that is heavily intertwined with that of the
United States of America. Culture is a conglomeration of features that define a country s social and
behavioral norms such as weather, geography, military history, and its civilian population. Over time
these characteristics have shaped Great Britain into what is today.
Arguably the largest influence on a modern society is the geography of the area they reside in. Great
Britain or the United Kingdom consists of a group of island off the northwest coast of Europe and is
93,635 square miles or about half the size of California. England, Wales, Scotland and Northern

Throughout the course of history the British empire was one of the most powerful in existence due to
their conquering of large swaths of foreign land through military force. More recent military conflicts
include World War 1 2, The Falklands Campaign, and the Global War on Terror. Most of Britain s
military campaigns have been successful and have led to its people being extremely proud of their
military and heritage. Although the country is small in relative land mass and population it has
frequently punched well above its weight class due to having a highly developed and well funded
military. In modern times, Britain and the United States of America are allies sharing advancements in
military technology and responsibility in ongoing military operations. The general populace of Britain

  • 3. Queer Representation Of All Ages Media Essay Queer Representation in All Ages Media Growing up as a Catholic, Puerto Rican gay boy in the 90s and early 2000s, I struggled to discover my queer identity as well as queer representation in the media I consumed. Being gay was something that was never discussed. If it was brought up, it was usually in hushed tones (I remember being introduced to my uncle s close friend each holiday) or as something negative (I still remember the sting of being called a faggot in elementary school). This reflected exactly how homosexuality was portrayed in media at the time. Queer characters and homosexuality were at best portrayed in codified, blink and you ll miss it labels and affectations, or at worst, something to laugh at, pity or even hate. As someone who still regularly watches reads comics, watches Saturday morning cartoons and plays video games, it is so exciting to discover the lengths of progress that has been made in queer representation in all ages media. In this paper I hope to detail the highs and lows of LGBTQ representation in all ages media and highlight the impact of media representation. Before celebrating the strides of queer representation in all ages media, it is important to look back at queer representation in the past. The late film scholar Vito Russo painstakingly researched the evolution of queer representation in cinema in his landmark book The Celluloid Closet. Loneliness And Isolation In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein In this excerpt of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, the scene reveals the creature s desperation to befriend the DeLaceys to escape his loneliness. After approaching the old DeLacey, he expresses his yearning for companionship and protection from the family. However, Felix, Safie, and Agatha suddenly enter the hovel and confront the creature. The horror (96) on the faces of his friends and being struck violently with a stick (97) show the rejection that the creature experiences. He is isolated from society, and it is proven when the DeLacey family rejects the creature for his appearance. This passage parallels the creature s first rejection by his own creator, Victor Frankenstein. Due to the his ugliness, Victor abandons his creation because of his disgust (35). As a result, the creature is left to explore the world on his own without guidance. His appearance causes him to be feared by nearly everyone he sees, and thus, he is isolated. Earlier, when the creature encounters an old man, he shrieked loudly (73) and ran out of his hut. His physique is such a cause of alarm for others, that even strangers leave their houses in fear. However, this passage shows the kindness that the blind DeLacey showed. Since he could not see, the old DeLacey was the only person who would listen to the creature, because he could not judge his appearance. He had empathy. Still, the creature faced rejection. Subsequently, he believed that solitude [was his] only consolation (61). The creature used isolation as a coping mechanism for his constant rejection. However, this only contributed to his loneliness and suffering. The creature even compares himself to the devil (93) to emphasise his seclusion. He uses this analogy to show his despair because even the enemy of God had his companions (93). Frankenstein s creation is physically and emotionally alone because he is the only one of his kind. The ways we have increasingly progressed over the many years have influenced our perspectives of what education really is. Although education is thought to mean acquiring knowledge obtained from textbooks and school, I believe that it is one of a broader sense; allowing not only students, but everyone to expand their experiences, thus creating what Spayde and Kagen would consider real world education. It becomes simplified into the informal education we get from other. As Hart has described, students are struggling with the world that they live in today, for our education system is not preparing students for the outside world, rather, it focuses on specific areas that society believes to be important. This leads to a lack of general knowledge, thus creating students educated in some sense, but ignorant in the other. Newman believes that the need for a diverse field in education, allows students to be surrounded by different interests; learning and assisting one another. Students are able to understand the material without fully going in depth with the information, and by doing so; they are able to grow and form their own opinions. By allowing such education and providing a well balanced education, people are able to become more knowledgeable and well rounded. The primary purpose of any education is to produce intellectual people, one who are understanding, and opinionated about the world they live in. Similar in thought to Newman, Spayde believes the education doesn t thoroughly allow you to understand the concepts of life. • 23. The Mexican Revolution Of Mexico And The United States Essay During the Mexican Revolution there were many prominent figures that emerged during the long struggle. Some of the figures had a positive impact on the region, and some others a very negative impact on the people of Mexico and their quest for an uncorrupted government. One figure that stands out in the border region between Mexico and The United States during this time is General Francisco Pancho Villa. To understand Pancho Villa s significant role during this uprising it is important to understand who Villa was prior to the revolution, and what acts lead to his rise to power. Francisco Pancho Villa (born Doroteo Arango on June 5th, 1878) was known as a bandit prior to his life as a Mexican General. Villa was born to sharecropper parents on a hacienda in San Juan Del Rio, Durango, Mexico. After the death of his father, Villa only in his teens became the head of his family. Villa soon found himself on the run from the law and the Haciendas owner after he shot the man in the foot after an altercation over Villa s sister; this is what led to him initially becoming an outlaw. While on the run as a fugitive Villa adapted other well known bandito ways of making money including robbing haciendas, and sticking up wealthy mine owners, this is also when he officially dropped Arango and only used Francisco Pancho Villa (Katz, 1998). Some bits of folklore can be found when describing Villa s actions during this time period. There are tales of him acting like a Robin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Innocence And The Death Penalty Analysis In Richard Dieter s article Innocence and the Death Penalty: The Increasing Danger of Executing the Innocent , he shares the mistakes and the dangers of the death penalty. Capital punishment had gotten more and more controversial during the 90 s because of the risk of innocence. There was no DNA evidence during this time to prove if a person was innocent or guilty, so when putting them to death there was still a possibility that they were incorrect on the verdict. Today there are DNA tests that help prove whether someone is innocent or guilty, but it cannot bring those back who have been executed unjustly because of the death penalty. Lack of witnesses, the pressure from the public to solve the case, and limited resources for the defendant were common obstacles and quickened them to be charged as a suspect and then sentenced them to death based on the crime they committed . It brought the US out of a massive hole of poverty by creating jobs and creating regulations to help the economy stabilize. The Stock Market Crash of 1929 can be blamed for the start of the Great Depression, after millions went into panic when their investments fell through. After Woodrow Wilson failed to help the working class in a worsening economy, Americans looked for new hope in Franklin D. Roosevelt, elected in 1933, to help them come out of this terrible depression. He responded by creating numerous administrations and programs over the course of 5 years. These programs were designed to create unskilled labor and support the poor to help stimulate the economy again. His plan succeeded up to the second world war, where economy started to boom when a higher work force was needed. The first step Roosevelt took to create economic stability was to create jobs. Administrations such as the Public Works Administration created millions of jobs for the unemployed, including building many bridges, hospitals, schools, and more (New Deal Public Works Administration projects).
