Existing Product Research
• Research existing products/topics for your production and
production methods.
• This could be quite broad to begin with, but should focus
down to relevant examples [in terms of styles, techniques
and content].
• Consider your audience, what do they expect, what
techniques and content will interest them.
• Summarise your findings before generating your own initial
ideas for this project.
• Your summary should consider what your research has
provided and how this is useful to you and your production.

Young drivers-bravehttp://www.brake.org.uk/slower-speeds-save-lives/15-facts-a-resources/facts/488-young-drivers-the-hard-facts
This is a website talking about the risks of young drivers. They mention the reason for why
the young drivers are in risk. They have used figures on the statements to prove that these
issues are happening. This makes the viewers more aware of what is being shown, as it is
proven true. They also separate the different reasons for the cause of bad young drivers.
There are different headings for each risk. This shows a beginning hypothesis to the
statement, to intrigue the reader to read on from the statement to get more information
from the fact. This is the best way to give out the information, as its easy to read and most
likely to drag someone into reading on. They tend to re use the words “young drivers“ in
the start of the paragraphs”. The re use of the word makes it seem like the finger is being
mostly pointed at them. This makes young drivers more aware of what they are reading,
and will make them read on to see what is also at risk to them.
The audience will be the age of 16-19. this age range wants to be aware of the risk so that
they can be aware of them when it comes to driving on the road. When they look at the
website, they will expect to find disadvantages of being a young driver. They will be
expecting to see some information about the lack of option of cars and how they aren’t
experienced enough to be a driver. The actual content goes in more in depth of what they
are in experienced n and how to prevent it. The paragraphs separate each topic of a
disadvantage. The separate paragraphs talking about the different risks will get them
reading it, as they will see the first one an be aware of the risks, they will want to read on
to see what else they are at risk. The technique would be simply be going strait to the
point. It shows the issue, and gives reasons for why it s a risk. This technique is the best
way to give out a point, as it makes it more easier for the younger generation to
understand, as they aren’t having to read through a huge paragraph to get the fact they
are looking for.
The website gives me so many factors to look at, and what to include in the documentary.
It shows me so many potential risks that the young drivers face and proof from the
statement. It also gives advice on what to do to prevent the dangers too. The way the risks
are presented are done very clearly, as t goes into depth to explain the statement. This
website will benefit me for finding out additional research to why young drivers are more
at risk, and how to make them more aware.
licence to Killhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnZbxDcgmUA
This Is a BBC 3 documentary talking about how someone had their life effected from reckless
driving as an A-level student. The documentary shows the experience and the faults of
reckless driving, showing how they felt and what they remember. The structure of the
documentary starts off with the experience of survivors and their regrets, then an interview of
some who ended up killing someone in a car accident, then an awareness to those who are
about to start driving. This structure shows the effects of reckless drivers and what new
drivers are going to do to prevent ending up like them. The ending acts as a lesson to learn
from the past victims, as it shows an assembly to young drivers of hat not to do in a car an
how to be cautious. Its structure works well, as it shows what not to do, and shows what
others will do to not end up like those who cause incidents. The content itself is very good, as
its showing a pretty distressing story of two victims of reckless car crashes. The story's shows
you the regrets of the victims and the trauma they went through all because of their reckless
driving. The assembly shows what young/Learner drivers have gained from the assembly, and
what they will do to prevent being at risk driving.
The target audience from this would be 16-19 year olds. I know this, as they base the
assembly to that age range. From watching the video, they expect to understand the effect
that bad driving can do to someone, so that they don’t do it themselves. The documentary
fulfills their expectations with distressing descriptions of what they remember, and how they
felt after realizing what they have done to themselves and the other passengers in the car to
make the audience realize that they could end up like this if they don’t take care when driving.
One technique that the video does is scaring the audience. They show real life images of
crashes, and injuries. The documentary also adds sad depressing music in the background of
the stories. The imagery shows the audience the reality of reckless driving to show how it
could be them if they make one stupid mistake. The sad violin backing track is added so that
the audience can get more emotional with the story so that they can be more aware with the
situation.
From the documentary, I like the way that it’s structured to tell the information. The
beginning with videos of reckless driving, the survival story, the tragic story and lastly the
lesson that others have learnt from seeing what it can do to you. The ending shows how
others feel about what they have seen. The ending is to show the progression of what young
driver will do to not end up crashing, to suggest to the viewers what to also do.
The unfinished Northern line
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjuD288JlCs&list=RDjjuD288JlCs&start_radio=1&t=533
This is part of a documentary series called unfinished London. In which it talks to you
about what London would be like if certain unfinished projects around London were to
be completed. This episode was about the unfinished northern line and what it would
have been like in London if it were completed. The video uses a lot of imagery to show
examples of the points that they are making. They show historical images and maps to
create imagery of what London could have been. The imagery is what makes the
documentary more interesting, as it creates a really good example of what the host is
talking about. They also get actors to do a mini skit in the documentary to represent
certain people. The skits over excaudate real life situations to add comedy to the
documentary. The comedy stops the documentary from being boring, and makes you like
the host as he is humorous. The documentary also talks at the end about why it is not
finished and should it be. The ending concludes with a statement that it would be good,
but the future would have been different saying. An ending to a documentary like that
works, as it is saying how everything has worked well in the end even though big projects
were planned.
For the audience of this documentary, they will be looking for facts about the unfinished
northern line. The documentary fulfils the audiences expectation by not just talking
about the un finished railway, but why it is the way it is, and what the benefits and cons
are for it. The video gives out more information than the audience expects. The video
shows them the content through imagery and humour. Whatever information is
commentated, a picture of what is being talked about will likely appear. This helps the
audience understand what is being talked about, and doesn’t allow there to be an over
explanation for something, as we can see it in front of us. The humour from the video
makes the audience more interested in the content, as they start to like the host and
want to see what he does next.
In conclusion, I like the way that the video explains its points through humour and
imagery/past videos. It makes the video become more interesting as it firstly makes you
like the host giving you the facts and secondly, shows you a good example of what he is
actually talking about.

99/average-car-insurance-cost-by-age/
This website is showing the different cost of car insurance
per age in the UK. The website shows how under 20s have
the highest price in car insurance compared to the other
age ranges. This graph gives a good observation about how
young drivers have really high insurance. This website
shows to me proof about how incredibly high that young
drivers get their insurance. It also shows tome the average
difference that the elder generation and the younger
generation pay for their insurance. The graph is the best
way to present information, as it shows comparison and its
more intriguing to look at compared to long sentences.
The audience will be looking for average prices for
insurance per age range. The graph clearly shows what they
are looking for, as it shows the cost per age.
https://www.confused.com/car-insurance/guides/how-
car-insurance-is-calculated
This is a website explaining the process of how car insurance works in
the UK. It has different topics separated in different paragraphs. In
the separate paragraphs, it explains why this is a reasoning, and how
its involved in insurance calculations. the separate paragraphs shows
how there is a lot more to car insurance rather than just age. One
thing that I've noticed in the website is the big font used and how the
text is spaced out.. This makes the text more easier to read and stops
the paragraph from looking like so much text to get through to get to
the small point. Also, the website uses the step by step topic
paragraphs to explain the different reasoning. This has made it easier
to find the main topic your looking for. In my case, age. The age
explains how young drivers aren't as experienced enough, so they get
higher insurance. This shows how they are more likely to cause a
danger to themselves based on the fact that they haven't driven long.
The Audience will be expecting a better understand on how their
insurance adds up. The website clearly shows that through the
different separate points per paragraph. The audience will be able to
get the information that they are specifically looking for based on the
fact that the website has separate in detail points. Its easy to read
because of its big spaced out font and briefly explains the reasoning.
Confused.com:
I like this website because it shows to me the reasoning for the cost of car insurance. It shows to me so much crucial
information that I need to consider putting in my video, as I covers the most important information of UK car insurance.
The only issue is that I'm not seeing many stats and figures that I can show for proof.
Cold war 9 minutes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVqziNV7dGY
This is a documentary video talking about the events that happened in the cold war. It
shows a brief explanation of the start and end of the cold war. They do it briefly to fit
with the 9 minutes, so they only talk about the major points in the documentary. By
only mentioning major points, it stops the documentary from becoming
uninteresting, as its not taking minutes to explain a small point. They do this by
talking about the most important parts of the context, and leaving out areas that
would go too deep inside of one topic in the video. they also use imagery to explain
the whole subject in the video. It’s shown as a drawing. The drawing is a good way to
teach someone the subject, as it recreates the situation, and fits with what the
commentary is talking about. When talking about a subject in the topic, they tend to
write lists in the video without mentioning it in the commentary. This is if you want to
pause it to look at, as it isn’t crucial information to know. It works writing down the
text, as it gives out extra information that you can read if you really want to.
For the audience, they expect to find out the history of the cold war in a short
amount of time. The video fulfils their expectations by talking about major events
that happened, and how it all lead to today. The text in the video helps the audience
with extra information that the commentator has missed out. They can pause the
video to read it, and continue on with the documentary when finished. This allows
the video to be shorter, and allows the commentator to get strait to the point with
what he’s talking about, as he isn’t including minor information. Also, the
documentary includes the date at the top left of the screen. This shows to the
audience where they are up to in the timeline, and points out when the important
events happened.
To conclude I like the way that the documentary talks
about the events. I like the imagery, as it shows a
rough a simulation of what actually happened. I like
the way the documentary goes strait to the point with
the facts, as it keeps the audience intrigued and
interested with what is being taught. If it never goes
strait to the point, then the video would get boring,
and would take to long to end.
Summary
From doing my research, I have found much needed ways of potentially presenting my work and for information. From the cold war video,
I’ve learnt about the way that the information should be told. I don’t want to bore the audience with too much information that may be
either unnecessary to the topic, or wont lead to anywhere; so I will pick out the most crucial and important facts and say that in the
documentary as it will make the audience become more intrigue with the facts being told. I know it will work, as I watched that
documentary and learnt many things about the cold war, as I never tuned out from being sick of hearing unnecessary and minor points.
The unfinished northern line video has shown that imagery with commentary and actual host footage with explanation can be mixed up.
From the technique, I will use the points that I'm trying to get across on screen, and show the evidence and explanation as a commentated
imagery, s then that way the audience know who the host is, and so they have a break from looking at image after image; because that can
get a bit repetitive after a while. The ending should also be a video to have the concluding end, as it ends the documentary more
professional, as the host is saying goodbye and saying his output before the show ends. The licence to kill shows me real life stories of
young drivers, and shows to me what I'm having to research into. It helps me understand that young drivers have higher insurance because
they tend t be overconfident and in experienced. The young drivers gives me so much facts of what young drivers are at risk of and why
they are at risk. This will help me with my background research for the project, as it shows me figures and comparison to why young drivers
tend to be bad and it gives me proof for the reasoning. Statistica helped me with comparing insurance prices per age. It just proves my
point that insurance is a lot more expensive for young drivers in the UK. It will help me with my hypothesis at the beginning to introduce
the topic of expensive insurance for young drivers. Confused.com shows to me how insurance is calculated. It shows how young drivers get
more expensive insurance because they tend to be more risky. It also shows to me how it doesn’t just come down to age. From this, I will
give a brief explanation of how insurance works, so that the audience are aware, and I will give my view on the system, and I may even
include an opinion on changing it. This will interest the audience, as they will be hearing a new point of view of the insurance system.
In terms of audience, they all expect to gain something before hand when they watch/read the segment. I've noticed that the research
tend t add more to the audience’s expectations by adding more facts and information that will interest you. For example, they add on from
the information with reasoning behind it and their own take. This makes a video more likeable, as its providing extra knowledge to the
audience. From this, I want to create a main topic title to bait the audience. From that, I want to include extra information in the video like
reasoning why, and a limited amount of context and an opinion. The opinion shows to the audience what somebody else think to the
situation and from that, it creates a debate with other people, making a trend of a conversation.
Initial Ideas
Idea 1
My idea is to talk about young drivers and the issues that they face with insurance. I want to look at these issues
because I’m a Learner driver myself and I am curious to know what to be aware of and understand why the issues
are the way they are. I want to make it into a video/ commentary style video. The video will show images during the
commentary and it will show me talking about the points as a face to face video. This

Ideas

  • 2. Existing Product Research • Research existing products/topics for your production and production methods. • This could be quite broad to begin with, but should focus down to relevant examples [in terms of styles, techniques and content]. • Consider your audience, what do they expect, what techniques and content will interest them. • Summarise your findings before generating your own initial ideas for this project. • Your summary should consider what your research has provided and how this is useful to you and your production. • Add more slides – this is encrouaged!
  • 3. Young drivers-bravehttp://www.brake.org.uk/slower-speeds-save-lives/15-facts-a-resources/facts/488-young-drivers-the-hard-facts This is a website talking about the risks of young drivers. They mention the reason for why the young drivers are in risk. They have used figures on the statements to prove that these issues are happening. This makes the viewers more aware of what is being shown, as it is proven true. They also separate the different reasons for the cause of bad young drivers. There are different headings for each risk. This shows a beginning hypothesis to the statement, to intrigue the reader to read on from the statement to get more information from the fact. This is the best way to give out the information, as its easy to read and most likely to drag someone into reading on. They tend to re use the words “young drivers“ in the start of the paragraphs”. The re use of the word makes it seem like the finger is being mostly pointed at them. This makes young drivers more aware of what they are reading, and will make them read on to see what is also at risk to them. The audience will be the age of 16-19. this age range wants to be aware of the risk so that they can be aware of them when it comes to driving on the road. When they look at the website, they will expect to find disadvantages of being a young driver. They will be expecting to see some information about the lack of option of cars and how they aren’t experienced enough to be a driver. The actual content goes in more in depth of what they are in experienced n and how to prevent it. The paragraphs separate each topic of a disadvantage. The separate paragraphs talking about the different risks will get them reading it, as they will see the first one an be aware of the risks, they will want to read on to see what else they are at risk. The technique would be simply be going strait to the point. It shows the issue, and gives reasons for why it s a risk. This technique is the best way to give out a point, as it makes it more easier for the younger generation to understand, as they aren’t having to read through a huge paragraph to get the fact they are looking for. The website gives me so many factors to look at, and what to include in the documentary. It shows me so many potential risks that the young drivers face and proof from the statement. It also gives advice on what to do to prevent the dangers too. The way the risks are presented are done very clearly, as t goes into depth to explain the statement. This website will benefit me for finding out additional research to why young drivers are more at risk, and how to make them more aware.
  • 4. licence to Killhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnZbxDcgmUA This Is a BBC 3 documentary talking about how someone had their life effected from reckless driving as an A-level student. The documentary shows the experience and the faults of reckless driving, showing how they felt and what they remember. The structure of the documentary starts off with the experience of survivors and their regrets, then an interview of some who ended up killing someone in a car accident, then an awareness to those who are about to start driving. This structure shows the effects of reckless drivers and what new drivers are going to do to prevent ending up like them. The ending acts as a lesson to learn from the past victims, as it shows an assembly to young drivers of hat not to do in a car an how to be cautious. Its structure works well, as it shows what not to do, and shows what others will do to not end up like those who cause incidents. The content itself is very good, as its showing a pretty distressing story of two victims of reckless car crashes. The story's shows you the regrets of the victims and the trauma they went through all because of their reckless driving. The assembly shows what young/Learner drivers have gained from the assembly, and what they will do to prevent being at risk driving. The target audience from this would be 16-19 year olds. I know this, as they base the assembly to that age range. From watching the video, they expect to understand the effect that bad driving can do to someone, so that they don’t do it themselves. The documentary fulfills their expectations with distressing descriptions of what they remember, and how they felt after realizing what they have done to themselves and the other passengers in the car to make the audience realize that they could end up like this if they don’t take care when driving. One technique that the video does is scaring the audience. They show real life images of crashes, and injuries. The documentary also adds sad depressing music in the background of the stories. The imagery shows the audience the reality of reckless driving to show how it could be them if they make one stupid mistake. The sad violin backing track is added so that the audience can get more emotional with the story so that they can be more aware with the situation. From the documentary, I like the way that it’s structured to tell the information. The beginning with videos of reckless driving, the survival story, the tragic story and lastly the lesson that others have learnt from seeing what it can do to you. The ending shows how others feel about what they have seen. The ending is to show the progression of what young driver will do to not end up crashing, to suggest to the viewers what to also do.
  • 5. The unfinished Northern line https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjuD288JlCs&list=RDjjuD288JlCs&start_radio=1&t=533 This is part of a documentary series called unfinished London. In which it talks to you about what London would be like if certain unfinished projects around London were to be completed. This episode was about the unfinished northern line and what it would have been like in London if it were completed. The video uses a lot of imagery to show examples of the points that they are making. They show historical images and maps to create imagery of what London could have been. The imagery is what makes the documentary more interesting, as it creates a really good example of what the host is talking about. They also get actors to do a mini skit in the documentary to represent certain people. The skits over excaudate real life situations to add comedy to the documentary. The comedy stops the documentary from being boring, and makes you like the host as he is humorous. The documentary also talks at the end about why it is not finished and should it be. The ending concludes with a statement that it would be good, but the future would have been different saying. An ending to a documentary like that works, as it is saying how everything has worked well in the end even though big projects were planned. For the audience of this documentary, they will be looking for facts about the unfinished northern line. The documentary fulfils the audiences expectation by not just talking about the un finished railway, but why it is the way it is, and what the benefits and cons are for it. The video gives out more information than the audience expects. The video shows them the content through imagery and humour. Whatever information is commentated, a picture of what is being talked about will likely appear. This helps the audience understand what is being talked about, and doesn’t allow there to be an over explanation for something, as we can see it in front of us. The humour from the video makes the audience more interested in the content, as they start to like the host and want to see what he does next. In conclusion, I like the way that the video explains its points through humour and imagery/past videos. It makes the video become more interesting as it firstly makes you like the host giving you the facts and secondly, shows you a good example of what he is actually talking about.
  • 6. Statista.com Confused.comhttps://www.statista.com/statistics/7511 99/average-car-insurance-cost-by-age/ This website is showing the different cost of car insurance per age in the UK. The website shows how under 20s have the highest price in car insurance compared to the other age ranges. This graph gives a good observation about how young drivers have really high insurance. This website shows to me proof about how incredibly high that young drivers get their insurance. It also shows tome the average difference that the elder generation and the younger generation pay for their insurance. The graph is the best way to present information, as it shows comparison and its more intriguing to look at compared to long sentences. The audience will be looking for average prices for insurance per age range. The graph clearly shows what they are looking for, as it shows the cost per age. https://www.confused.com/car-insurance/guides/how- car-insurance-is-calculated This is a website explaining the process of how car insurance works in the UK. It has different topics separated in different paragraphs. In the separate paragraphs, it explains why this is a reasoning, and how its involved in insurance calculations. the separate paragraphs shows how there is a lot more to car insurance rather than just age. One thing that I've noticed in the website is the big font used and how the text is spaced out.. This makes the text more easier to read and stops the paragraph from looking like so much text to get through to get to the small point. Also, the website uses the step by step topic paragraphs to explain the different reasoning. This has made it easier to find the main topic your looking for. In my case, age. The age explains how young drivers aren't as experienced enough, so they get higher insurance. This shows how they are more likely to cause a danger to themselves based on the fact that they haven't driven long. The Audience will be expecting a better understand on how their insurance adds up. The website clearly shows that through the different separate points per paragraph. The audience will be able to get the information that they are specifically looking for based on the fact that the website has separate in detail points. Its easy to read because of its big spaced out font and briefly explains the reasoning.
  • 7. Confused.com: I like this website because it shows to me the reasoning for the cost of car insurance. It shows to me so much crucial information that I need to consider putting in my video, as I covers the most important information of UK car insurance. The only issue is that I'm not seeing many stats and figures that I can show for proof. Cold war 9 minutes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVqziNV7dGY This is a documentary video talking about the events that happened in the cold war. It shows a brief explanation of the start and end of the cold war. They do it briefly to fit with the 9 minutes, so they only talk about the major points in the documentary. By only mentioning major points, it stops the documentary from becoming uninteresting, as its not taking minutes to explain a small point. They do this by talking about the most important parts of the context, and leaving out areas that would go too deep inside of one topic in the video. they also use imagery to explain the whole subject in the video. It’s shown as a drawing. The drawing is a good way to teach someone the subject, as it recreates the situation, and fits with what the commentary is talking about. When talking about a subject in the topic, they tend to write lists in the video without mentioning it in the commentary. This is if you want to pause it to look at, as it isn’t crucial information to know. It works writing down the text, as it gives out extra information that you can read if you really want to. For the audience, they expect to find out the history of the cold war in a short amount of time. The video fulfils their expectations by talking about major events that happened, and how it all lead to today. The text in the video helps the audience with extra information that the commentator has missed out. They can pause the video to read it, and continue on with the documentary when finished. This allows the video to be shorter, and allows the commentator to get strait to the point with what he’s talking about, as he isn’t including minor information. Also, the documentary includes the date at the top left of the screen. This shows to the audience where they are up to in the timeline, and points out when the important events happened. To conclude I like the way that the documentary talks about the events. I like the imagery, as it shows a rough a simulation of what actually happened. I like the way the documentary goes strait to the point with the facts, as it keeps the audience intrigued and interested with what is being taught. If it never goes strait to the point, then the video would get boring, and would take to long to end.
  • 8. Summary From doing my research, I have found much needed ways of potentially presenting my work and for information. From the cold war video, I’ve learnt about the way that the information should be told. I don’t want to bore the audience with too much information that may be either unnecessary to the topic, or wont lead to anywhere; so I will pick out the most crucial and important facts and say that in the documentary as it will make the audience become more intrigue with the facts being told. I know it will work, as I watched that documentary and learnt many things about the cold war, as I never tuned out from being sick of hearing unnecessary and minor points. The unfinished northern line video has shown that imagery with commentary and actual host footage with explanation can be mixed up. From the technique, I will use the points that I'm trying to get across on screen, and show the evidence and explanation as a commentated imagery, s then that way the audience know who the host is, and so they have a break from looking at image after image; because that can get a bit repetitive after a while. The ending should also be a video to have the concluding end, as it ends the documentary more professional, as the host is saying goodbye and saying his output before the show ends. The licence to kill shows me real life stories of young drivers, and shows to me what I'm having to research into. It helps me understand that young drivers have higher insurance because they tend t be overconfident and in experienced. The young drivers gives me so much facts of what young drivers are at risk of and why they are at risk. This will help me with my background research for the project, as it shows me figures and comparison to why young drivers tend to be bad and it gives me proof for the reasoning. Statistica helped me with comparing insurance prices per age. It just proves my point that insurance is a lot more expensive for young drivers in the UK. It will help me with my hypothesis at the beginning to introduce the topic of expensive insurance for young drivers. Confused.com shows to me how insurance is calculated. It shows how young drivers get more expensive insurance because they tend to be more risky. It also shows to me how it doesn’t just come down to age. From this, I will give a brief explanation of how insurance works, so that the audience are aware, and I will give my view on the system, and I may even include an opinion on changing it. This will interest the audience, as they will be hearing a new point of view of the insurance system. In terms of audience, they all expect to gain something before hand when they watch/read the segment. I've noticed that the research tend t add more to the audience’s expectations by adding more facts and information that will interest you. For example, they add on from the information with reasoning behind it and their own take. This makes a video more likeable, as its providing extra knowledge to the audience. From this, I want to create a main topic title to bait the audience. From that, I want to include extra information in the video like reasoning why, and a limited amount of context and an opinion. The opinion shows to the audience what somebody else think to the situation and from that, it creates a debate with other people, making a trend of a conversation.
  • 10. Idea 1 My idea is to talk about young drivers and the issues that they face with insurance. I want to look at these issues because I’m a Learner driver myself and I am curious to know what to be aware of and understand why the issues are the way they are. I want to make it into a video/ commentary style video. The video will show images during the commentary and it will show me talking about the points as a face to face video. This

Editor's Notes

  1. Use of imagery to explain every point, and gif like animations They explain the main point through the war, and briefly explain what was going on. They miss out minor information but still manage to construct an interesting video. Audience expect to find out a brief history of the cold war. It still goes in dept by adding in extra facts in the information being explained. The commentary firs well with the imagery, as the minimalist work represents the reality that happened.
  2. Summaries your findings before generating your own initial ideas for this project. Your summary should consider what your research has provided and how this is useful to you and your production.
  3. Think about a subject you could write about, a design style you could work in and why you would want to do it. Think about content. What different visual and written elements would you include? Initial ideas can be documented in any way that you would like. Mind maps are ok, but they don’t work for everyone. If you prefer to simply write your idea, do that. If you want to combine text and images, do that. As long as you communicate a potential idea, the method is up to you. Present you idea and also some justification for your choices. You can link this back to your research.
