For this paper I was asked to define an information system and types of information systems, Provide
three examples of information systems used in real life and tell us what type of information systems
they are and how are they related to the learning objectives for this module. I have picked three
examples of information systems in real life applications, they are: Pandora radio (decision support
system), cashier register (transaction processing system) and Facebook (office automation system).
Information system are vital to knowledge management, they provide a simple system to ensure the
success of not only businesses, but national defense as well. * Define an information system and types

Office Automation System:
Office automation systems can take many forms, but their primary function remains the same
throughout, and that is to facilitate information exchange between people in an organization. Some of
these systems may include word processors, spreadsheets, email clients, file sharing systems,
databases, etc. The main benefit behind this type of technology is that the more freely that information
flows around an office, the more productive the environment is. With the increase in production, the
organization can raise its profits considerably as the efficiency of data exchange increases, allowing a
decrease in the time it takes to deliver the product to the customer. (Mills, Kevin (June 30, 2011) IT

My Passion For Architectural Design
I have always had a passion for being practical for as long as I can remember, I often sought pleasure
from helping my parents build dreaded flat pack furniture. Over the years this passion for being
practical and building things has just developed into a love for structures and especially in the last few
I have been able to hone my passion down to architecture. What could be greater than wanting to
design these great edifices and seeing your design built for people to integrate into part of the lives.
My application to your university derives from my eagerness to study at one of the best universities in
the UK and from my desire to create well designed spaces that are both practical and gratifying to the
eye. It also hopes to ensure a satisfaction for my passion for practicality, my appreciation of
architecture and hopefully in the future it should secure me a place among some of the architectural
greats.
As a designer, I am constantly studying the world around me and looking at ways in which I can
change and mould it to make it more appealing and suitable for the tasks we undertake in our
everyday lives. This is reflected in my Extended Project Qualification that I completed earlier this year
which looks into the influence of architecture on human behaviour and how this compelling link
between the health and satisfaction of the human body that is largely determined by the fundamental
design of buildings can often be ignored by many of the architectural designers today.

Case Study On Business Email Compromise
Business Email Compromise by Réda Herbzi Business Email Compromise is a dangerous Fraud case
where fraudsters spend the least and can obtain a hefty reward through manipulating companies into
making payments. Cyber thieves have stolen $2 billion from 12,000 businesses using a scam that
starts when business executives or employees email accounts are compromised or spoofed. The
fraudster is able to steal money with the help of an unwitting accomplice, an employee who is fooled
into submitting a wire request. From the perspective of the company s financial institution, the
transaction appears completely legitimate. Even confirmation calls or other out of band authentication
will reach the employee who did indeed submit the request. Use various media sources (internet,
newspapers, etc.) to identify an event within the last 5 years in which a company experienced a control

Native American Reaction To Native Americans
It has been highly debated whether or not the Native Americans initially had a positive or negative
reaction to the foreign settlers that began to come in large waves to a previously unexplored continent.
There are many historians who claim that the Native Americans immediately reacted with distrust to
the new arrivals, and in some cases and to certain extents this is true. However, it has been shown that
the Natives at first viewed the Whites and Spanish with curiosity and courtesy rather than initial
violence. The Indians were very intrigued with the weaponry of the new peoples and the clothes they
wore, as well as the language they spoke. They did not, at the time, realize the true intentions of the
aliens . It was only after the grievances that were caused as a result of their expeditions that they
began to react to them with distrust and hate. It has been shown that the Native Americans initially
saw the new foreigners as objects of curiosity and interest rather than objects of wrath and destruction.
This curiosity stemmed from many factors such as the clothing that the new comers wore, the
weaponry that these people held and wielded with such confidence, as well as the language and
culture which had never been encountered before. Initially each of the Native American tribes were
very interested in the culture exhibited by the Europeans as they began to populate the Eastern Coast
and the South Americas. Some of the most impactful ideologies that were not only

I always heard stories from my dad about how great the 1970s and1980s were but I never could grasp
what was so great about it. After interviewing my father about what made the 1980s unique, special,
and different, I was really able to make a connection of how identical his description was to the one
that took place in Ready Player One. After comparing the similarities between the two, I was also able
to make the connection of how different everything is today compared to the lifestyle back in the
1980s. Before I interviewed my dad, I informed him that I just read a book called Ready Player One

video games. My memories of playing the games with my friends, being excited about a new video
game console, and the pure anticipation of buying the new and hottest video games still stick with me
today. I was glued to my Nintendo 64 and could not stop playing Super Mario 64 and NFL Blitz. I was

Sadly my parents never bought me the Gameboy but they made up for it by buying me three of those

The Thought Fox Figurative Language
Figurative language is by no means just ornamental, but an important part of guiding cognitive
construal. (Dancygier, 2014 p196) Attention to figurative language when analysing a text is critical as
making judgement on a text can be undetermined when taking in the literal sense, perhaps the text
when taken literally means nothing or has a shallow and uninteresting meaning but when figurative
language is taken into consideration a deeper new meaning can be taken from the text. The aim of
figurative language first and foremost is to force the reader to imagine what it is the writer is trying to
express and to explain the concept in an interesting way. This language is not supposed to be taken
literally and through comparisons to another concept, a deeper undertone is revealed to the reader.
Two of the poems in which make use of figurative language are Mary s Song by Sylvia Plath and Ted
Hughes The Thought Fox In Plath s Mary Song she uses metaphors to portray a deeper message to the
reader. There are three main metaphors all overlapping within Plath s poetry. This is the goal of

The poem can not be taken for its literal mean but instead, it compels the reader to delve deeper into
the immediate. The main connotation is the Fox. Foxes are known worldwide as sly, they do not attack

Essay on The Reality of Political Realism
When discussing whether or not a nation state should enter a war and when to do so, three beliefs on
foreign policy and war exist. The three different diplomatic stances are that of pacifism, just war
theory, and political realism. Political realism, or realpolitik as it is often referred to, is the belief war
should only occur when it is in the national interest of the particular nation state. Henry Kissinger, a
political realist, in his book Diplomacy argues that realism is the only logical answer. Just war
theorists, along with pacifists, on the other hand oppose these arguments and therefore critique of this
form of diplomatic action. To construct a valid understanding of the realist perspective the arguments

Darwin s survival of the fittest was a strong belief Roosevelt held and theorized all life followed the
ideas of natural selection. Natural selection and survival of the fittest are theories that the strong will
naturally survive by both, eliminating the weak and having greater likelyhood to pass on.
With the German invasion of Luxenbourgh and Belgium directly breaking treaties previously signed
stating peace Roosevelt stated to not take sides. Roosevelt s reaction was that of no concern at first,
yet he was concerned once war erupted in Europe. Mainly concerned that the war would disrupt the
balance of power in Europe and the German invasions would lead to German invasions pressing
forward into Latin and South America. German military occupations in Latin America would pose a
direct threat for the US if this were to be true. Roosevelt felt the problem would inevitably resolve
itself prior to occupations in Latin America based on the principles that a balance of power still exists.
A balance of power is the way the European government had operated for quite sometime now. If one
nation state became all powerful and started campaigns to take over other nation states in Europe, a
coalition of nation states would form to put down the aggressing nation state to insure the stability of
their own nation state. Therefore, according to Roosevelt and his political realist views, a country

Nature Of Agency Video
Contract Creation and Management The Nature of Agency video continues the story of a business
relationship between Quick Takes Video and Non Linear Pro. Quick Takes, dissatisfied with the
current video editing software owned initiates contact with a salesperson from Non Linear Pro to
discuss a software product that Quick Takes believes may be a solution for updating their present
equipment. The first meeting between the two companies becomes the basis of a subsequent law suit
by which both parties dispute the terms of agreement in the use of the software product. The issue is
one that involves determining if a contract is formed. Additionally the definition of agencies within a
small business must be examined to determine if the actions of a Quick Takes employee may in fact
validated the terms of a contract. Elements of a Contract In determining if a contract has been formed
between two parties, the elements of a contract are examined to determine its enforceability. For a
contract to be enforceable, the following four basic requirements must be met: agreement,
consideration, conceptual capacity, and lawful object (Cheeseman, 2010, p. 154). During the initial
meeting Non Linear Pro (offeror) made an offer to an owner of Quick Takes (offeree) the use of an
editing software on a one month trial basis. Quick Takes accepted the offer with the understanding that
the trial would cost the equivalent of leasing the product. This exchange constituted a bilateral
agreement

Grand Coulee Dam Essay
Background
Nearly 13,000 years ago, glaciers moved across the earth. In the Pacific Northwest they created many
rivers, including the Columbia. The rock that the Grand Coulee Dam was built on was carved out by
those glaciers creating a sturdy base of the dam. It is located in the rain shadow of the Cascade
Mountain Range in a shrub steppe grassland, which results in very little rainfall and high
temperatures. There have been many Native American tribes, including the Spokane, Sanpoli,
Nespelem, Lakes, Colville and many others that have lived along the Columbia River and have relied
on it for many of their day to day necessities (Columbia Basin Project 2015). On July 16, 1933

The tribal members are against the dam because it ruins their life style. The Native Americans use the
Columbia River as a source of food and a way of life. Moreover, the damming of the Columbia River
forced the Native Americans to resettle. The dam is an issue to them because they fish for salmon, an
anadromous fish and once they re through the dam, there is no way for them to come back up it to
spawn; this leads to the disappointed commercial fishermen. The environmentalists are upset because
the construction of the dam means there would be habitat loss and alteration of a variety of wildlife,
including plants. The taxpayers in the Northwest Region of the United States are the ones who paid

Trope In Enchanted
Adults historically love to glorify the idealism and emotionality of childhood through storytelling.
From Mark Twain s perennial wild boy Huckleberry Finn, who befriends a runaway slave despite the
prejudices of adult society, to Hiccup of the 2010 film How to Train Your Dragon, the only one of his
village who recognizes that dragons are not evil but actually kind animals, American media has no
shortage of children who are somehow able to see more than their adult counterparts. Patricia Read
Russell s 1983 essay Parallel Romantic Fantasies: Barrie s Peter Pan and Spielberg s E.T.: The
Extraterrestrial traces the echos of the 1904 play Peter Pan in Spielberg s then recent film, E.T. and
one of the parallels she highlights is this very concept. Russell borrows from Wordsworth in her essay
to concisely describe the trope of a child s ability to see more clearly than adults, referring to it as the
visionary gleam . Russell s essay underlines the presence of this trope in E. T. s protagonist, a ten year
old boy named Elliot, and in his bond with the title character, a friendly lost alien. Over twenty five
years later, the same trope is explored in Disney s parody film Enchanted but through the lense of a
young girl. The concept of the visionary gleam of childhood perpetuated by Spielberg s film and
Enchanted reflects an inherent desire of adults to return to a simpler, more emotionally driven period
of their lives which may or may not have actually existed, and this

Gender Roles In My Antonia
My Ántonia takes place in a time in which gender roles were more enforced and more commonplace
than they are today. Women were expected to take care of the children and the home, while men were
expected to earn money and work the fields. Even though these roles were such a prominent aspect of
the era, many characters worked against them. Willa Cather portrays these characters in a positive
light because of their deviations from gender roles rather than despite them.
Ántonia differs from what the perfect woman was thought to be in multiple ways. She works in the
fields just much as she works in the house, but she never expresses disdain for this fact. Rather, she
enjoys it, stating Oh, better that I work out of doors than in a house...I

Reflection On The Sartell Football Program
The Sartell football program was looking to be as strong as ever in 2014. The varsity team returned
many starters from the year before and featured tremendous depth from sophomores and juniors. Head
Coach Scott Hentges appeared to have a team poised to make a playoff run after a strong opening win.
The date was September 5, 2014. A beautiful fall day lead into a nearly perfect Friday night in Sartell
Minnesota. As is typical in cities across America, fall Friday nights in Sartell mean football. The
stands were buzzing for Sartell s home opener versus the Alexandria Cardinals. Alexandria was known
for having a well coached, physical football program. The game was going projected to be a very good
one. It wasn t close. Sartell dominated on both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His damp and muddy jersey was extremely difficult to ensure a clean grasp. From here, I leaped and
wrapped my left arm around his opposite shoulder. He was a giant in comparison to me as a scrawny,
underweight, sophomore. I spun his shoulders, and I felt him losing his balance. We both crashed
against the grass and slid five yards out of bounds. Things didn t feel real until I rushed off the field
and heard Mr. Weide s familiar voice over the intercom belt, Tackle made on the play by number four
Jake Shea! I had made my first varsity tackle, and put myself on record for the coaches. Later that
night, Coach Hentges approached me and congratulated me on my first varsity tackle. He praised my
hustle, as I ran roughly one hundred and fifty yards on the play. The play helped solidify that I was
able to contribute. I finished out my sophomore year starting on varsity special teams. This hard work
and phenomenal play led to me starting as a junior and being named a Team Captain as a senior.
Football has always been my number one passion, and for me, this was all a very big deal . To this
day, my father preaches hard work and determination. Struggling with something is acceptable in the
Shea household, but only if you gave it all you had in the process. Working hard has paid off countless
times in my life, and I hope to keep getting positive results in the

The Pros And Cons Of Shingled Roofing
Anyone who has owned an asphalt shingled roof has seen the black streaks that form in the areas on
the roof that get less sunlight. Commonly mistaken for mold, these streaks are actually algae that feed
off of the limestone filler used in the shingles. This algae is not only an eyesore, left unchecked it can
cause the granules on your shingles to fall off. It is a good idea to get rid of this menace as soon as you
notice it. Most of the New Orleans roofing experts agree that a homeowner should use a non corrosive
roof cleaner. This will ensure that you do not cause any unnecessary harm to the roof. There are many
to choose from at most hardware stores. Make sure that whatever day you plan to clean your roof, it is
cool and calm out. If it

Journey
Malala s Journey
In Joseph Campbell s book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Campbell breaks down the journey of a
hero. A journey that per Campbell happens to every one of us, that once complete leaves us with a self
actualization of our life and the moments and decisions that either helped or hindered us at one point
in our lifetime. In The Hero with a Thousand Faces, the various examples of each stage are detailed as
part of the journey. Campbell uses religious figures and contemporary tales such as Alice in
Wonderland to provide us with the definition of the stages. Campbell s book also provides what the
purpose of each stage is are as well a brief description. Malala Yousafzai is a prime example of the
hero s journey. Her autobiography I Am Malala takes us on her hero s journey. A young Pakistani girl
with big aspirations and the adventure that drove her to speak up against her religions restrictions and
those that stood in her way to achieve what she wanted: an education. Malala s book takes the reader
on her journey from Mingora, Pakistan to England. I Am Malala, is a fantastic example of the Hero s
Journey described in Campbell s book. In the following paragraphs, I will offer a sequence of Malala s
journey as it relates to a Hero s Journey and the different stages a hero goes through.
Malala s book begins with stage four, Campbell refers to this stage as the Belly of the Whale. Stage
four is where the hero falls into the unknown zone and undergoes a rebirth. Stage four s purpose is to
give up the old self and be reborn. A new self can be born and continue the journey for the greater
good of the community. The book begins on October 9, 2012, when she was 15 years old. As she sits
in a school bus on the way to school, a Taliban gunman stops the bus and shoots her for publicly
defying the Taliban and stating that girls must have the right to receive an

Alexander The Great s Mother Olympias
Although Alexander the Great is fascinating to study, I found his mother Olympias even more
compelling. Denigrated by both supporters and detractors of her son, Olympias appeared to me as a
woman who strove to do all she could for her son in an androcentric world, and I admired her
determination. The success Alexander enjoyed upon becoming king perhaps helped Olympias to
recover from the pain of being divorced by her husband. As Alexander won battle after battle, perhaps
Olympias began to feel more and more secure in her position. Her troubles may have finally appeared
to be over.
Learning that Olympias had been executed after Alexander s death made me feel desperately sorry for
her. An aged woman bereft of both her husband and son seemed

These words are so easy to say but so hard to do. It takes time, immense time to heal the wounds it
deeply cut. It s beyond your control. You can never tell as to when will you be able to do it. Its never

stage. Gloominess eats your whole being. Lonesomeness is at present. Hurt was all you feel.
Inexplicable feeling of aloofness ruled your humanity. Enormous wounds of hurt, wholly keeps on

Red Meat Vs White Meat Research Paper
It is a controversial discussion over which meat is better: red or white meat? Both red and white meat
are good sources of protein and provide many beneficial nutrients that help with body function.
Protein is important in supporting the immune system and necessary for human consumption to
maintain a healthy balance. Many humans commonly consume meat as a source of protein. In
deciding what to consume, it is important to choose wisely to avoid risk of negative health effects.
Risk of various health issues can be increased through consumption of meats high in fat and
cholesterol. By exploring the comparison of nutritional and health aspects of red and white meat, one
can conclude that white meat is better for your overall health.
How does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike white meat, red meat is suggested to cause many health problems due to the higher levels of
saturated fat and cholesterol. These high amounts of cholesterol can increase risk of the buildup of
plaque. Red meat contains a compound called carnitine that is linked to the clogging of the arteries.
Red meat is associated with a increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and colorectal cancer.
Red meat may also contain harmful hormones that increase risk of breast cancer. Although the iron
present is more easily absorbed, heme iron has been linked to cancer. Red meat has even been linked
to increased risk of death. According to a Harvard Study conducted in March 2012, consuming a daily
serving of processed meat increased death risk by 20 percent...while a once per day serving of
unprocessed red meat was tied to a 13 percent increase in overall mortality risk (Jaslow). Another
issue is that when grilling, heterocylic amines, compounds linked to cancer, are released. As stated,
processed meat is unhealthier for consumption. Pork often comes in the form of processed meat which
is associated with increased risk for cancer. An additional problem is the harboring of bacteria in meat.
Cattle are often associated with harboring E.coli which may lead to E. coli poisoning upon
consumption. Studies support the idea that red meat and processed meat may increase risk of
developing type 2

Intelligence Theory And Its Impact On The Development Of...
Abstract
In attempting to understand intelligence, it can be alleged that someone who is intelligent is able to
make logical reasonable decisions, to assess situations, has read extensively, has good ideas and is an
expert on a particular subject. This then leads to the question, how is intelligence measured? This
article is concerned with discussing the involvement of David Wechsler and his role in the
development of the IQ (Intelligence Quotient) test by describing the history and content of such tests .
This will be done by employing secondary data from journal articles, newspapers and credible sources
via internet.
Introduction
David Wechsler s accomplishments ranged from inventing one of the first lie detectors, to ... Show

With age and experience being key factors, there are other concepts of importance which were left out
such as emotions and the impact of the environment. According to Psychological Corporation (1997),
Wechsler viewed intelligence as a multidimensional construct, consisting of both general aptitude and
specific abilities, the latter of which are composed of elements which are quantitatively different, yet
contribute to general ability as a whole. He believed intelligence should be measured by both verbal
and performance tasks, although later in his career, he began to explore other factors related to
intelligence that is the ability to perceive and respond to social, moral, and aesthetic values.
Kaufman and Lichtenberger (1999) posit that the development of the Wechsler tests was not based on
theory, except for, general intelligence theory. Instead, Wechsler applied his clinical skills and
experience, as well as his extensive statistical training in development of the scales for his intelligence
tests (Kaufman Lichtenberger, 1999; Wechsler, 1997). However, extensive theoretical perspectives
have been applied to the Wechsler scales, the nature of the tests, and the meaning of their scores. The
subtests Wechsler selected for his tests comprises of many different mental abilities such as abstract
reasoning, verbal skills, and processing speed. Wechsler recognized that his intelligence scales
sampled an individual s

I highly suggest that you use dumbbells often because of the fact that they give your arms that specific
and targeted workout. Make sure that you don t always do bicep curls, as there are many other types of
exercises that you can do to make dumbbells more powerful to use. For example, you can place the
dumbbells out in front of you and allow for the weight to take over. Hold onto it as hard as you can
and enjoy the burning sensations in your arms. They can help you out tremendously with gaining more
muscles. You will find out later on that dumbbells are some of the most important things to do in a
men s bodybuilding workout program. The best part is that you can always do different types of

The Struggle in Crime and Punishment Essay
The Struggle in Crime and Punishment
Reading this book makes you ill because from the beginning to the end you watch as psychological
forces eat away at the thoughts and actions of their victim causing him to finally confess to the
hideous crime he has committed. The story is basically the struggle between Raskolnikov s Napoleon
übermensch theory and his conscience which make him confess to his crime. Dostoevsky s genius is
in describing how Raskolnikov struggles in his thoughts and actions. His thoughts become
increasingly disjointed and desperate and his actions show that he has an increasing need to escape the
uncertainty of being convicted, to talk about the crime, to confess, and to suffer for his crime. It is

He lets the criminal incriminate himself. It s uncanny how Profiry manages to keep Raskolnikov
hovering around him until he finally confesses it s also uncanny to realize how natural it is for
Raskolnikov to come under Porfiry s psychological spell. This leads to a central question of the book:
are laws just abitrary human constructs or are there psychological laws which govern our behavior in
societies. Raskolnikov believes (as he wrote in his article) that people can rise above human laws as
Napoleon did, but Profiry (and Dostoevsky) believe otherwise:
What is running away? it s merely formal; the point isn t that he won t run away because he has
nowhere to run to, but that psychologically he won t escape, he, he! What an expression! By a law of
his nature he wouldn t escape, even if he had somewhere to escape to. Have you ever seen a moth with
a candle? Well, he ll be just like that, he ll circle round me as if I were a candle: Freedom will no
longer be a boon to him; he will begin to brood, he will get himself into a muddle, entangle his own
feet in a net, and worry himself to death! . . . More than that, he himself will provide me with a
mathematical proof, of the nature of two and two make four if only I allow a long enough interval
between the acts of the drama . . . And he ll keep on, keep on circling round me, closer and closer, and
then, plop! he ll fly straight into my mouth and

Some of these systems may include word processors, spreadsheets, email clients, file sharing systems, databases, etc. The main benefit behind this type of technology is that the more freely that information flows around an office, the more productive the environment is. With the increase in production, the organization can raise its profits considerably as the efficiency of data exchange increases, allowing a decrease in the time it takes to deliver the product to the customer. • 4. My Passion For Architectural Design I have always had a passion for being practical for as long as I can remember, I often sought pleasure from helping my parents build dreaded flat pack furniture. Over the years this passion for being practical and building things has just developed into a love for structures and especially in the last few I have been able to hone my passion down to architecture. What could be greater than wanting to design these great edifices and seeing your design built for people to integrate into part of the lives. My application to your university derives from my eagerness to study at one of the best universities in the UK and from my desire to create well designed spaces that are both practical and gratifying to the eye. It also hopes to ensure a satisfaction for my passion for practicality, my appreciation of architecture and hopefully in the future it should secure me a place among some of the architectural greats. As a designer, I am constantly studying the world around me and looking at ways in which I can change and mould it to make it more appealing and suitable for the tasks we undertake in our everyday lives. This is reflected in my Extended Project Qualification that I completed earlier this year which looks into the influence of architecture on human behaviour and how this compelling link between the health and satisfaction of the human body that is largely determined by the fundamental design of buildings can often be ignored by many of the architectural designers today. ... • 6. Native American Reaction To Native Americans It has been highly debated whether or not the Native Americans initially had a positive or negative reaction to the foreign settlers that began to come in large waves to a previously unexplored continent. There are many historians who claim that the Native Americans immediately reacted with distrust to the new arrivals, and in some cases and to certain extents this is true. However, it has been shown that the Natives at first viewed the Whites and Spanish with curiosity and courtesy rather than initial violence. The Indians were very intrigued with the weaponry of the new peoples and the clothes they wore, as well as the language they spoke. They did not, at the time, realize the true intentions of the aliens . It was only after the grievances that were caused as a result of their expeditions that they began to react to them with distrust and hate. It has been shown that the Native Americans initially saw the new foreigners as objects of curiosity and interest rather than objects of wrath and destruction. This curiosity stemmed from many factors such as the clothing that the new comers wore, the weaponry that these people held and wielded with such confidence, as well as the language and culture which had never been encountered before. Initially each of the Native American tribes were very interested in the culture exhibited by the Europeans as they began to populate the Eastern Coast and the South Americas. (Dancygier, 2014 p196) Attention to figurative language when analysing a text is critical as making judgement on a text can be undetermined when taking in the literal sense, perhaps the text when taken literally means nothing or has a shallow and uninteresting meaning but when figurative language is taken into consideration a deeper new meaning can be taken from the text. The aim of figurative language first and foremost is to force the reader to imagine what it is the writer is trying to express and to explain the concept in an interesting way. This language is not supposed to be taken literally and through comparisons to another concept, a deeper undertone is revealed to the reader. Two of the poems in which make use of figurative language are Mary s Song by Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes The Thought Fox In Plath s Mary Song she uses metaphors to portray a deeper message to the reader. The three different diplomatic stances are that of pacifism, just war theory, and political realism. Political realism, or realpolitik as it is often referred to, is the belief war should only occur when it is in the national interest of the particular nation state. Henry Kissinger, a political realist, in his book Diplomacy argues that realism is the only logical answer. Natural selection and survival of the fittest are theories that the strong will naturally survive by both, eliminating the weak and having greater likelyhood to pass on. With the German invasion of Luxenbourgh and Belgium directly breaking treaties previously signed stating peace Roosevelt stated to not take sides. Roosevelt s reaction was that of no concern at first, yet he was concerned once war erupted in Europe. Mainly concerned that the war would disrupt the balance of power in Europe and the German invasions would lead to German invasions pressing forward into Latin and South America. German military occupations in Latin America would pose a direct threat for the US if this were to be true. Roosevelt felt the problem would inevitably resolve itself prior to occupations in Latin America based on the principles that a balance of power still exists. A balance of power is the way the European government had operated for quite sometime now. If one nation state became all powerful and started campaigns to take over other nation states in Europe, a coalition of nation states would form to put down the aggressing nation state to insure the stability of their own nation state. • 20. Trope In Enchanted Adults historically love to glorify the idealism and emotionality of childhood through storytelling. From Mark Twain s perennial wild boy Huckleberry Finn, who befriends a runaway slave despite the prejudices of adult society, to Hiccup of the 2010 film How to Train Your Dragon, the only one of his village who recognizes that dragons are not evil but actually kind animals, American media has no shortage of children who are somehow able to see more than their adult counterparts. Patricia Read Russell s 1983 essay Parallel Romantic Fantasies: Barrie s Peter Pan and Spielberg s E.T.: The Extraterrestrial traces the echos of the 1904 play Peter Pan in Spielberg s then recent film, E.T. and one of the parallels she highlights is this very concept. Russell borrows from Wordsworth in her essay to concisely describe the trope of a child s ability to see more clearly than adults, referring to it as the visionary gleam . Russell s essay underlines the presence of this trope in E. T. s protagonist, a ten year old boy named Elliot, and in his bond with the title character, a friendly lost alien. Over twenty five years later, the same trope is explored in Disney s parody film Enchanted but through the lense of a young girl. The concept of the visionary gleam of childhood perpetuated by Spielberg s film and Enchanted reflects an inherent desire of adults to return to a simpler, more emotionally driven period of their lives which may or may not have actually existed, and this ... Women were expected to take care of the children and the home, while men were expected to earn money and work the fields. Even though these roles were such a prominent aspect of the era, many characters worked against them. Willa Cather portrays these characters in a positive light because of their deviations from gender roles rather than despite them. Ántonia differs from what the perfect woman was thought to be in multiple ways. She works in the fields just much as she works in the house, but she never expresses disdain for this fact. Abstract In attempting to understand intelligence, it can be alleged that someone who is intelligent is able to make logical reasonable decisions, to assess situations, has read extensively, has good ideas and is an expert on a particular subject. This then leads to the question, how is intelligence measured? This article is concerned with discussing the involvement of David Wechsler and his role in the development of the IQ (Intelligence Quotient) test by describing the history and content of such tests . This will be done by employing secondary data from journal articles, newspapers and credible sources via internet. With age and experience being key factors, there are other concepts of importance which were left out such as emotions and the impact of the environment. According to Psychological Corporation (1997), Wechsler viewed intelligence as a multidimensional construct, consisting of both general aptitude and specific abilities, the latter of which are composed of elements which are quantitatively different, yet contribute to general ability as a whole. He believed intelligence should be measured by both verbal and performance tasks, although later in his career, he began to explore other factors related to intelligence that is the ability to perceive and respond to social, moral, and aesthetic values. Kaufman and Lichtenberger (1999) posit that the development of the Wechsler tests was not based on theory, except for, general intelligence theory. Instead, Wechsler applied his clinical skills and experience, as well as his extensive statistical training in development of the scales for his intelligence tests (Kaufman Lichtenberger, 1999; Wechsler, 1997). However, extensive theoretical perspectives have been applied to the Wechsler scales, the nature of the tests, and the meaning of their scores. The subtests Wechsler selected for his tests comprises of many different mental abilities such as abstract reasoning, verbal skills, and processing speed. The story is basically the struggle between Raskolnikov s Napoleon übermensch theory and his conscience which make him confess to his crime. Dostoevsky s genius is in describing how Raskolnikov struggles in his thoughts and actions. Raskolnikov believes (as he wrote in his article) that people can rise above human laws as Napoleon did, but Profiry (and Dostoevsky) believe otherwise: What is running away? it s merely formal; the point isn t that he won t run away because he has nowhere to run to, but that psychologically he won t escape, he, he!
