Silent Film The Artist And Singin In The Rain
The Artist is a film set in the silent film era that is an almost silent film itself and I found it incredibly
effective that a film about the silent film era is practically silent itself. The lack of spoken dialogue
and diegetic sound makes it ever so clear to the viewer that this movie is about the silent film era and
it is attempting to make a statement about that style of film. Although the advent and surge in
popularity of talkies has been addressed in other films, such as Singin in the Rain, The Artist is unique
in that it addresses the takeover of talkies in the context of a silent film. Prior to watching The Artist, I
read a short synopsis of the plot, so I somewhat knew what to expect from the plot of the film and it
seemed like a film that I would enjoy. My husband had seen the film previously, and said that he
enjoyed it, but because his opinions of films can differ so greatly from mine, I wasn t sure how to
interpret his enjoyment of the film. Before I watched The Artist, my expectation was that it would be
an enjoyable, interesting almost silent film, with what feels like a stereotypical plot line ( washed up

The cinematography and cinematic language were quite effective, and although I initially suspected
that the plot would ultimately be satisfying but stale, I was pleased that it surpassed my expectations.
The plot ended up feeling like a fresh take on an old standard, in large part due to the setting and the
cinematic language used. I generally struggle to ascertain anything beyond the surface when I am
watching films, and I found that by watching The Artist with the intent of analyzing certain aspects of
it, I was more engaged and enjoyed it more than I think I would have

Public Mass Shootings And Suicide Bombings
On the evening of Friday, 13 November 2015, a massacre including of public mass shootings and
suicide bombings occurred in the capital of France, Paris. The attackers killed 130 people and
wounded 368 serious injuries. Just 10 months previous, on January 7, 2015 two terrorists attacked
Charlie Hebdo, an office of a Parisian satirical magazine. They killed eleven and wounded eleven
people. During the attacks in Paris, no one victim was armed. They didn t have any chance to defense
for themselves. When police arrived, it was too late to save the innocents. The world today is full of
dangerous with terrorism, criminals, mass shootings, and so forth. We re not safe from anything.
Today, I am going to tell you about the right to carry concealed gun and why we need it. I have
researched both sides of this controversy, and the need to carry concealed gun is the stronger
argument. According to Deborah Homsher, author of Women Guns: Politics and the Culture of
Firearms in America, when states passed the laws which give adults the right to carry concealed guns
if they don t have a criminal record or mental illness, the number of multiple victim shootings
declined by 84 percent (265). Furthermore, a 2015 report from the Crime Prevention Research found
that the number of concealed guns permits has soared, growing from 4.6 million in 2007 to over 12.8
million in 2014 (6). First, I m going to tell you effective of carry concealed gun. Second, I ll tell you

Cultural Diversity For The Health Care System
The term culture has a very broad definition that encompasses the values, beliefs, customs, religions,
behaviors, traditions and the collective attitudes of a group of people (Williamson Harrison, 2010). In
1971, Canada was one of the first countries in the world to adopt multiculturalism as a national policy
(Government of Canada, 2012). Since then, Canadians have prided themselves on being accepting of
cultural diversity and recognizing equal rights for all citizens, regardless of country of origin
(Government of Canada, 2012). However, cultural diversity presents challenges for the health care
system as people of various cultures have different expectations and requirements of healthcare (De
Miao Kemp, 2010). This is not an issue that is unique to Canada, but one that extends to all countries
which encourage multiculturalism. Indeed it has been found that immigrants often experience
declining health and dissatisfactory medical care compared to the native population due to issues in
language, accessibility, social support, and familiarity with the health care system (Pollock, Newbold,
LafreniĂšre Edge, 2012; De Miao Kemp, 2010). Therefore, there is an increased emphasis for nurses
and other health care professionals to develop cultural competence. As I will show in this paper,
working in a culturally diverse society requires nurses to adapt their caring strategies to cater to the
cultural needs of their patients. I will then expand on how my own personal experiences

Korean Attributions
In Hee Sun Park s article Social Identity, Attribution, and Emotion: Comparisons of Americans,
Korean Americans, and Koreans, he examines the feelings surrounding the Virginia Tech shooting,
and his findings suggest that attributions are emotionally charged and rooted in self preservation more
so than accuracy.
In April 2007, the deadliest school shooting in American history occurred when Cho Seung Hui
opened fire on the campus of Virginia Tech. Having spent the majority of his life living in the United
States but being born in Korea, there were a few different nationalities that Seung Hui could be

it fair or accurate for someone else to decide that he s Korean? No, it isn t, but that s what happens,

Harpy In The Tempest
In Taymor s movie adaptation of The Tempest, Ariel appears to the three men of sin whom are Alonso,
Sebastian, and Antonio. Just before Ariel appears, the music gets louder and deeper. This indicates that
manners are getting serious and the mood of the characters is tense. Ariel appears as the harpy which
is a dark omen like creature. The harpy has wings and speaks with a deep and intimating voice. Ariel
charges the men of their sin of throwing Prospera and Miranda off Milan. The sense that the three men
are doomed is illustrated, as the men seem to fight the air as it appears to Gonzalo who is not worn by
Ariel. The dark and loud scene makes the feeling intense. In the book The Tempest, Prospero presents

Car Assembly Lines Research Paper
Automobile Assembly Lines Henry Ford wanted to put the world on wheels. He and a team of
engineers worked to create the first automotive production line. The assembly line helped Henry with
his dream to mass produce vehicles at the lowest time as possible this made Henry Ford able to mass

History Of The Watergate Scandal
Throughout history, the American people have had a hard time instilling trust in their government and
political leaders. Between the numerous scandals involving United States presidents and other
political leaders and the dozens of conspiracy theories encompassing the United States government, it
is no wonder why the American people have lost trust in their government, and why the United States
has become the laughing stock of foreign countries. The 2016 presidential election was arguably the
most controversial election in American history; many voters felt that neither of the candidates could

Here, a router builds a table (called routing table) as how a packet should be forwarded through which
interface, by using either statically configured statements (called static routes) or by exchanging
information with other routers in the network through a dynamical routing protocol, Control plane
maintains contents of the label switching table (label forwarding information base, or LFIB).
Data plane has a simple forwarding engine. It is a very simple mechanism. It does not involve any

■ HOW DOES IT WORK
MPLS works by prefixing packets with an MPLS header, containing one or more labels . This is called
a label stack. Each label stack entry contains four fields: ● A 20 bit label value. ● A 3 bit Traffic Class
field for QoS (quality of service) priority (experimental) and ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification).
● A 1 bit bottom of stack flag. If this is set, it signifies that the current label is the last in the stack. ●
An 8 bit TTL (time to live) field. These MPLS labeled packets are switched after a label
lookup/switch instead of a lookup into the IP table. As mentioned above, when MPLS was conceived,

Informative Essay On Rock And Roll
Question 1: Rock and Roll was originated in Cleveland during the early 1950s, and it s popularity rose
due to many changes in the United States. One of the reasons why Rock and roll became such a big hit
was because of the promoter, Alan Freed. He broadcasted R B records on his station in Cleveland. And
ever since he marketed Rock and Roll, there were more rock and roll concerts organized in Cleveland.
He was able to introduce thousands of white teens to African American music. Rock and Roll was the
combination of shuffle and straight feels since it is the combination of country music, and rhythm and
blues. Not only rock and roll has the power to influence people but also it helps to set the trend among
teenagers, and socially change the world. After World War 2, technology started to rise by the

Quadriplegia is a very complex, life threatening condition that requires immediate attention after
initial injury. After arriving at the hospital, focus on survival is key by monitoring the airway.
Respiratory support may be required via mechanical ventilation through a noninvasive intermittent
positive pressure ventilator or an invasive tracheostomy if the injury has affected the individual s
diaphragm. After the airway is patent, the regaining of vertebral alignment and immobilization of the

What Caused The American Civil War Essay
The American Civil War was a war fought within the United States of America between the North
(Union) and the South (Confederacy) The war was one of the most critical events in American history.
It is estimated that 623,000 soldiers died during the Civil War (Garrison) starting from 1861 and
ending in 1865. While many still debate the ultimate causes of the Civil War, author James McPherson
writes that, The Civil War started because of uncompromising differences between the free and slave
states over the power of the national government to prohibit slavery in the territories that had not yet

The Northerners opposed to versus the South who were States were the only regions in the world that
still legalized the ownership of slaves. This angered the Southerners and threatened their way of life.
The election of Abraham Lincoln as the sixteenth president of the united states in November of 1860
set the stage for division, secession, and civil war (Stokesbury 3) the South felt threatened when it
came to slavery.
There were also economic differences between both regions. The Southern states were agrarian states,
which depended on agriculture rather than industrialization. Slavery was essential to the South s
agrarian economic system, dedicated to producing raw materials for manufacture by others. (Axelrod
15) After the Cotton Gin was invented, it increased the need for slaves and made cotton the chief crop
of the South. The South was able to produce 7/8 of the world s supply of cotton. (Axelrod 15) This
made the South s dependence on the plantation system slavery. By then, the North was growing
industrially. The north feared that South s slave based economy might affect their economy. The North
depended on factories and other industrialized businesses. As for this reason many of new immigrants
settled north, while few settled south. This allowed the North to grow industrially, while making the
South feel more threatened by them. The Confederacy opposed any kind of industrialization and
manufactured as little as possible. Southern

Investing in the Stock Market
Investing in the Stock Market Matt Gonzales Abstract The purpose of this paper is to inform the
average investor of how to make money in the stock market. The stock market should be thought of as
a long term savings vehicle. Investing in the stock market should not be associated with gambling. By
investing in high quality U.S. companies, the investor in a company profits along with the company.
As a shareholder, when the company makes money, the investor also does. There are many ways to

For example, if a person contributes $2,000 to their IRA, they will receive money back on their tax
return at the end of the year. If that person is in the 28% tax bracket, they will receive $560 back
($2,000 X 28%). The second type of IRA is known as Roth IRA. After tax money is contributed to the
Roth IRA, therefore the investor does not receive income tax money back at the end of the year, but
the beauty of the Roth IRA is that when the money is withdrawn at the time of retirement (age 70), the
profit is completely tax free, both state and federal (rothirarules.net, 2011). So, it is easy to see that the
Roth IRA is an excellent vehicle for retirement investing. It makes much more sense to use a Roth
IRA for retirement than a traditional one. With a 401k account, the money that is invested is referred
to as pre tax money. With pre tax money, this money is placed into the account before it is taxed. An
example of this would be if an individual earned $100 before it was taxed by the federal and state
governments, the entire $100 would be placed in the account to be invested. After tax money means
that the same $100 would first be taxed federally as normal income (usually 28%) and then taxed by
the state (usually 6%), to leave only $66 of the original $100 to now be spent or invested. In addition
to the tax advantage, the main benefit of the 401k is

Fraud In Forgery
This essay will investigate the serious problem of forgery and a way of how this problem can be
controlled.
Counterfeit or forged money is an imitation of real money, which is produced without the legal
permission of the government or state. To use or produce counterfeit money is a form of fraud and
therefore highly punished. Forgery has been an issue for a very long time, as it is a problem, which is
nearly as old as money itself. Counterfeiting has a large impact on the economy and society, as it is
reducing the value of real money, increasing the prices due to the fact that more money is circulating
in the economy, and there s also a decrease in the acceptability of paper money. (3)
Forgery is a serious and widely spread problem, as alone in the UK (2009) there were 566,000
counterfeit notes revealed. 95% of these were 20 pound notes. The most common fraud is of one
pound coins, which there were in 2009 30 40 million in circulation of. That would be approximately
2.8% of the total one pound coins. (6) Some fraudsters, like for example McAnea, had or still have the
possibility to churn up to 2 million of forged banknotes a day. ... Show more content on

So the ethics of the fraudsters may not have changed, as those people continue to counterfeit
banknotes, however the ethics and morals of the society have changed. People have become more

surprised if a cashier carefully examines their bills, as checking the if the notes large and small are
real, allows the cashiers to intercept counterfeits and keep them out of the till and out of the their
change. (16) This shows that people have not only become aware of this serious problem, but also
started to take responsibility and

Langston Hughes Tales Of Simple And The Symbolic Undertone
Tales of Simple and the Symbolic Undertone
Langston Hughes is considered to be one of the most well known poets/writers in the modern era. One
of his most notable works was a series of fictional short stories called Tales of Simple. In these tales,
Hughes uses symbolism to express his feelings and views on African American history through the
character Jesse B. Semple. In literary terms, the word symbolism is defined as being a person, object
or event that suggests more than its literal meaning. In Langston Hughes Tales of Simple , the author
uses the main character s name, feet and view on a type of Jazz music to symbolize the life of an
African American and the effect of slavery, discrimination and racism on blacks. One of the ... Show

The point Hughes makes was that a black man during that time was focused on work and providing
for himself and his family. And work was done while standing. Hughes shows that the true tale of an
African American was at the physical foundation of a person: the feet. The symbolic nature of Simples
feet goes beyond the mindset of African Americans at that time. Hughes uses Simple s feet to
symbolize the poverty experienced by blacks. These feet have walked ten thousand miles working for
white folks and another ten thousand keeping up with the colored. These feet have stood at altars, crap
tables, free lunches, bars, graves, kitchen doors, betting windows, hospital clinics, WPA desks, social
security railings, and in all kinds of lines from soup lines to the draft. (100)
As the title of the tale states, Simple s feet do have their own life. Not only do Simple s feet showcase
the thousands of miles working for white folks, but they also tell the tales of where he has been when
not working. All of the aforementioned places are either associated with poverty or things viewed as
aid by society. Hughes uses this to symbolize the negative connotation attached to African Americans
because of the poverty most encountered at the time. Langston Hughes symbolizes the life of hard
labor lived by a black man through the continued reference to Simple s feet: The corns I ve cut away
would dull a German razor. The bunions I forgot would make you ache from now

Blindness In Carver s Cathedral

Roberts disdain for the blind and his smallness of character. As a juxtaposition we are introduced to
the blind man who is evolved in character, and has a substantially important relationship with Roberts
s wife. As the story progresses and Robert has more interaction with the blind man, he himself begins

The narrator asks the blind man if he would like to smoke marijuana with him, during this Robert
acknowledges his preconceived ideas by assuming the blind man smokes when he does not. Robert
says, I thought I knew that much and that much about blind people (Carver, 187). Here, he must
acknowledge he is previous notion was incorrect, and that is the furthest step we have yet to see the
narrator take. The blind man staying up with him that evening shows him reaching out and attempting
to help Robert evolve. As the blind man says I am always learning something. Learning never ends
(Carver, 188). This represents Roberts learning and growing as a person. The true transformation is
depicted through the describing of the Cathedral. Robert attempts two times to describe a cathedral but
cannot find the words or description to it justice. The blind man leads him to draw it and made him
close his eyes. Now Robert is seeing in a new way. No longer through his eyes, but from within.
Robert describes this as like nothing else in my life up to now (Carver, 190). Together, one man eyes

Robert kept his eyes closed for a long time after this. As he points out, my eyes were still closed and I

The Great Chilean Earthquake And Its Impact On Earth
Earthquakes have been around for longer than humans have roamed the Earth. Even though humans
haven t been around to record all earthquakes, they have been around to record many significant ones
in the past that have done damages to not only civilizations, but human lives and even the economy. A
prime example of an earthquake that wreaked havoc on Earth was the Great Chilean Earthquake. This
was the world s largest ever recorded earthquake which had a magnitude of 9.5 that hit near Valdivia,
Chile on May 22, 1960 at 19:11. This was the largest earthquake of the 20th century that triggered
large tsunamis to occur all through the Pacific Ocean Basin. This earthquake destroyed large amounts
of buildings, killed many people, and had a significant impact on the economy. The Great Chilean
Earthquake was what scientists call a Megathrust earthquake. Megathrust earthquakes occur at
subduction zones at destructive convergent boundaries and are the most powerful earthquakes in the
world that can generally create tsunamis (Subduction Zone: Tsunami Generated by Megathrust

The Reaction Of Catalase Breaking Down Hydrogen Peroxide
PreLab Questions:
The reaction that will be taking place is Catalase breaking down hydrogen peroxide.
The enzyme in the reaction is Catalase. If another enzyme like lactase is used, no reaction would take
place because the substrate, hydrogen peroxide, wouldn t fit into the active site.
The substrate is the hydrogen peroxide
The product is H2O and O2.
The rate of reaction will be measured by timing how long it takes for the spheres of yeast to sink and
float up to the top again.
Three factors that can affect the rate of reaction are temperature, pH and the salinity.
General Procedures:
Making the yeast/sodium alginate solutions:

Research Question: How does the concentration of an substrate affect reaction rates?
Hypothesis: If the concentration of an substrate is increased then the time it takes for the yeast spheres
to rise will decrease because there is more substrate for the enzyme to break down, creating more
oxygen, faster.
Independent Variable: Concentration of substrate
1.5% H2O2, 0.6% H2O2, 0.3% H2O2, 0% H2O2
Dependent Variable: Amount of time it takes for the yeast spheres to rise.

The Effects Of Media On Our Society
In our society, media is constantly being used not only to communicate but also to learn about what is
going around the world. The web gives the chance to share news and even lets people talk to one
another. The internet spreads information and ideas quickly and reaches out too many people. Much of
what our society sees and reads often come from sources provided by the internet. Based on these
sources, knowledge is gained, wither it is real or fake. Constantly seeing media gives our society the
idea that it is real. Videos, music, and photos are a way of spreading ideas clearly to more people. Due
to this, ideas such as the end of the world sparks conversations and creates theories.

Doomsday media spreads quickly giving dates on the suspected day and tips on how to be prepared.
With many theories to research, an older theory known as the Great Flood is a controversy that also
spread panic. Johannes Stoffler, a germen astrologer issued a world ending flood. This flood was set to
occur on February 25, 1524. On this day, all planets would be under the same water sign Pieces.
Creating a flood that was set to destroy our world, Hundreds of pamphlets announcing the coming
flood were issued and set in motion a general panic (Cole). With Stoffler s statements and highly
respected research, the event seemed as if it was in fact the end. As time passed and theories did not
occur, the fear and predictions remain. Harold Camping predicted the end of the world would happen
on May 21, 2011. 7000 years prior to this date was when the Biblical Flood was said to occur. As the
date approached, Camping announced his math was incorrect and declared October 21, 2011, to be the
official date for doomsday. As the internet grew more popular, research was being brought to attention
and even movies have been created to document the events that will occur on this day known as
doomsday. A huge theory that occurred recently is the 2012 Maya Apocalypse The Mayan long

Why The Chinese Market Is Responsible For The Consumption...
Christine Bigham
Bringing Beer to China On the surface, bringing beer to China seems to be undoubtedly a good idea.
The Chinese market is responsible for the consumption of a quarter of the world s overall beer
volume. Also, a tenth of the revenue from the beer industry can be traced to the Chinese market. The
Chinese beer market is so massive it seems like a sure fire way to generate an increase revenue for any
beer company. The Chinese market seems so viable that many western brands are looking to expand
into the market possibly as a way to compensate for lagging sales in America as a result of the
increase in American preference for craft beers and local brews. In order to enter this highly
competitive Chinese beer market, western companies should try some various less conventional tactics
to entering the marketplace. As stated in the article the Chinese market is experiencing stagnant
growth in their beer industry. This stagnant phase has been attributed to the Chinese economic
slowdown, population aging, as well as the increased interest of Chinese consumers in comparable
beverages and local brews. In order to address these concerns, western companies should figure out
how to take their brand name, but make a local version of it. Making a premium local craft beer
product line specifically for the Chinese market would tap into the Chinese interests in craft beers,
while also simultaneously tapping into the market of younger consumers that are pushing the

The Oval Portrait
Commentaire de texte : The Oval Portrait, Edgar Allan Poe From Selected Tales, Penguin, Popular
Classics The Oval Portrait, a short story from Edgar Allan Poe, lies in the fact that art and life are
deadly linked. The passion for art and painting is described as causing death since the painter s
determination to make a portrait of his wife will cause her death. As in most of Poe s short stories, the
setting takes an important place in the story. We could say that it has even an influence on the
characters since the narrator is losing his mind while the action is taking place. Our study will consist
in showing how The Oval Portrait could embody most of Poe s tales. We will first try to discover how

Taking a Look at Celtic Music
Celtic Music
When Celtic music comes to mind, nowadays, the first thing people think of is something to do with
maybe something to do with the group Riverdance, a famous Irish step dancing group, the Irish
musician, Enya. Celtic music has almost become more of the New Age music, the relaxing and
soothing comfort music that people feel the need to listen to when they relax, or just to escape from
reality, but it used to be something else before it has evolved into New Age Music . It is as almost if
people have forgotten what Celtic music really was and changed it from what it originally was.
Celtic music, to most of the musicians of the past consider Celtic music to be classified as traditional
music; the traditional musicians and composers are actually offended in modern times because now
using the word Celtic almost as a marketing technique, if it has a lick of something pertaining to
Ireland, throw it in the Celtic music category at the record store, and the traditionalist feel like that the
entertainment industry are basically bastardizing what they felt was more important than making a
quick buck, thus making people really forget where and how Celtic music got started. It can be easy
for people to think that Celtic music is originated in one specific country, but that is not the case. So
what exactly IS traditional Celtic music? Not to be confused with the basketball team, the Boston
Celtics, which the pronounced with the soft c pronunciation, so literally

Night By Elie Wiesel Analysis
Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, published Night to share his family s experience of that horrible

Eliezer develops caregiver burden leaving him with feelings of resentment. In Night, Wiesel shows
how the Holocaust transforms his and his father s nonexistent relationship to becoming inseparable

transpire, their relationship is nonchalant showing little emotion and support. Eliezer s father is a well
respected man in his community and has a better connection with them than his family: He rarely
displays his feelings, not even within his family, and was more involved with the welfare of others
than with that of his own kid (Wiesel 4). Being needed often leaves him little opportunity to spend
with his household. He also does not approve of Eliezer s wish to study Kabbalah: First you must

Essay on Minorities in Song of Solomon
Minorities within Minorities in Song of Solomon
In a study about minorities, the groups that are differing from the dominant culture are seen as
homogeneous. But, if we look deeper into the groups, we can see that there are distinctions among the
minorities concerning lifestyle and social status. In Toni Morrison s Song of Solomon the author
provides examples in the background of the story that shows people with differential identities of the
general identity of the minority group.
The character Macon Dead and his family is represented as differing from the society they live in with

over the bypass downtown, and headed for the wealthy white neighborhoods (32).
The difference between Milkman and his father is that he was born rich and does not have the
ambitions of his father. But, because of the way he was raised, he cannot prevent himself from acting
different from the African American society. In fact, we see that he has only Guitar as a friend. He
likes to spend time with women in parties. The result of his wealthy life and the fact that he was raised
in a city shows us his distinction from the society when he arrives in Shalimar.
When Milkman talks with the shopkeeper Mr. Solomon, he grows up the anticipation of the people
around him. The reasons why they are offended by Milkman is clearly stated in the following passage:
They looked with hatred at the city Negro who could buy a car as if it were a bottle of whiskey
because the one he had was broken. And what s more, who had said so in front of them. He hadn t
bothered to say his name, nor ask theirs, had called them them, and would certainly despise their days,

The Structural Change Of The Inner City Job Market
The drastic reduction of stable manufacturing work in American cities remains one of the biggest, if
not the foremost, issue linked to poverty. The growth in blue collar factory, transportation and
construction jobs that were traditionally held by men has dissipated for a variety of reasons, from
Globalization to the rise in Illegal Immigration. This structural change in the inner city job market is
of particular interest because of the amalgamation of both Economics and Poverty/Segregation issues.
Without clearly defining and addressing this crucial structural issue, the war on poverty will be
extremely difficult to successfully address and overcome. It is difficult to overstate the extent to which

The closure of big factories and the like ravished the Union industry, which had previously negotiated
rather lofty compensation deals with the corporations. Clerical jobs also garnered about 30% lower in
wages, which added to the growing plight of poverty. Women traditionally staffed the new clerical
jobs and were aided with the rise in women s rights. On the other hand, these men, primarily African
American as will be discussed later, had almost no alternatives or any light at the end of the tunnel,
considering the many obstacles in their path adapting to the changing world. The ethnic group affected
most by this structural shift in job market is African Americans and played a significant part in the
continuation of their high poverty levels. The Great Migration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries
led to millions of Blacks moving North hoping for a better life and escaping the cruel post Civil war
and Jim Crow environment in the South. As Massey writes, this led to the formation of the black
Ghetto : highly concentrated black neighborhoods in many Northern cities. Whilst today the Ghetto
holds a negative connotation for some, it is important to note that Black intellectuals like Booker T.

independent, self sustaining black neighborhoods would lead to economic sustenance, a vibrant

Definition Of Funny Essay
In the quote from Mark Twain, Show me a man who knows what s funny, and I ll show you a man
who knows what s not , there is one word in particular that I would like to focus on. Funny. We all
know what funny means, something that causes you to laugh, something that s humorous. But, what
exactly falls under that definition? That s something you can t specifically decide. With so many
factors going into it, including an individual s personality, the area, the time, and more, finding
something that everyone believes to be funny would be hard.
For me specifically, the word funny brings to mind jokes I ve heard or read in my mind. More
specifically, I picture chickens crossing roads, cows interrupting conversations, and a variety of
different people and items knocking on doors. However, you may associate very different ideas with
the word. My father and sister both find it extremely hilarious to watch other people undergo harm,
while one of my best friends finds humor in making statements that have no blatantly obvious
connection with the current conversation and often don t make grammatical sense. Everyone has their

Choice In Rappaccini s Daughter By Nathanial Hawthorne
Rappaccini s Daughter is indeed a unique story that could contain many messages, however, there are
more reasons behind Nathanial Hawthorne s character choice. Authors tend to have a motive or some
sort of message behind their story, Hawthorne is not an exception. Another factor to take note of is
how the story revolves around Rappaccini as according to Giovanni, his demeanor was that of one
walking among malignant influences, such as savage beats, or deadly snakes, or evil spirits
(Hawthorne 1142). Rappaccini was regarded as a distrustful gardener which suggests he was a man

Paul Cezanne Essay
PAUL CÉZANNE
Post Impressionism, as the name would suggest, is the art movement that directly followed
Impressionism. One artist, who led the Post Impressionism movement, was French artist, Paul
CĂ©zanne. Much of his early work was pure Impressionism and, although he was introduced to the
style and guided by Camille Pissarro, CĂ©zanne s works showed a distinctive uniqueness. CĂ©zanne
broke away from Impressionism because of the lack of composition; he felt the desire to depict
subjects in the third dimension as well as appearing flat. CĂ©zanne did not agree with the
Impressionistic trait of portraying the world through light, instead, he built up images by a generous

He did not have the same attraction towards light as did many Impressionist, he believed that the
structure of objects should be portrayed through colour, not light, quot;I seek to render perspective
only through colour quot;. CĂ©zanne created the illusion of depth in his works by adding numerous
layers of colour to distinguish the form of his subjects. He would perfect the design in his works by
distorting objects and having multiple viewpoints on the same object. In quot;Still Life with Apples
and Peaches quot; (1905), the table is seen from two different sides, as well as from above and some
of the objects on the table are viewed front on, while others are viewed from above.
CĂ©zanne would create a 3D effect in his works by giving each object many planes he would add to this
effect with his vast use of colours. He took advantage of how warm colours (reds and oranges) and
cool colours (blues and greens) draw the eye closer or push it away. An example of this is in
quot;Mont Ste. Victoire Seen from Bibemus Quarry quot; (1898 1906), the mountain in the
background use blues and greys to emphasise its position in relation to other objects. The boulders in
the foreground demonstrate CĂ©zanne s use of planes; the areas that protrude are in blocks of red,
whereas the areas that are sunken in are in blocks of orange or yellow, giving the impression that it has
many faces.

and finally to the customers. To do so, we are given two distribution cost tables that explain the
processing center shipping costs, meaning origin to hubs, and the customer shipping costs, meaning
from hubs to the final customer. Therefore, the cost to ship rail cars of grain from the origins and hubs
will determine the proper distribution of rail cars from origin to destination. Solution Our optimal
solution (total shipping cost) to meet all ten constraints is $513,000. Origin Muncie will not ship to

Dollar General s strategic objective is sustainable and profitable long term growth. The company has

The dollar store industry caters to low , middle , and fixed income buyers who are price sensitive.
Regarding consumables, buyers are looking for the best bargain for an item that they will need to
purchase again in the near future. The high threat of customer buying power drives profitability down.
In contrast to buyer power, supplier power is low. This is due to the large number of suppliers that
offer price competitive, undifferentiated products. Suppliers must rely on the retail industry to sell
their product, so forward integration is unlikely. The low threat of supplier power increases
profitability. The threat of substitutes is medium. Since extreme value retailers offer a focused
assortment of goods in a small box format, mass retailers such as Wal Mart and Target are substitutes
rather than competitors. On one hand, mass retailers have a larger assortment of branded goods,
economies of scale, and are highly price competitive with extreme value retailers. On the other hand,
extreme value retailers are more convenient due to the small box format, allowing a customer to get in
and out quickly. The products being sold are undifferentiated so price performance tradeoff is low. The
threat of new entrants into the industry is medium. There are areas of the U.S. with no extreme retail
presence, making it easier for a new entrant to open and capture market share. On the demand side,

Christian Faith Reflection Paper
January 27th, 2015. This is the day that would change my perspective of the Christian faith forever.
Let me take you back to the day before. It was a long day and I had just completed yet another day at
the prestigious Saint Thomas Academy. Later that evening I had planned to attend tutoring, lift and
head home for a prolonged night of study, but this was not the case. As the final bell rang, I became
drowsy, nauseous and extremely light headed, and I did what any other cadet would do: take a trip to
the nurse s office. It was here where I fell asleep for a little under an hour, and the nurse contacted my
mother and I made it home safely. My mom then took my temperature, provided me with aspirin, and
sent me to bed. Now, to completely understand the story, I need to describe my family. On my mom s
side of the family, we were and are still very close to each other. My cousins and I take tremendous
pride and passion in caring for, and spending time with our grandparents. We were especially fond of
our great grandfather, Robert Glockner. He was a WWII veteran, and had German blood, making all
conversations interesting! We spent extended amounts of time with him, especially during his later
years, but it was I who had the opportunity to build a extravagant relationship with him. We spent
countless hours together, him in a comfy bed, and me seated right beside him in an arm chair. He
would relive stories from his time in the Navy, and the times when we were young. Though,

Working out can be strenuous at times. Therefore, you might commence to experience muscle fatigue.
The central factor for muscle fatigue is the accumulation of lactic acid that builds up due to working

The Tale Of Othello By William Shakespeare
The tale of Othello written by William Shakespeare is about several things; love, heroism, military,
isolation and sadness. The contrasts of characters within in this play are almost as remarkable as the
themes presented and evoked. Within this piece each character is balanced by another of similar or
contrasting characteristics. Desdemona is balanced by her opposite, Iago. Her love and concern for
others is at one end of the spectrum versus his hatred and concern for self at the other end. All of the
characters present a range and variety as striking and different as that produced by the opposite.
Othello and Iago are two opposites that balance each other s personality and action throughout this
piece. Their distinguishing qualities stand out to the mind s eye therefore when we are not thinking of
their actions or characterstics, the idea of them is still as present as ever.
Prior to the opening scene it can be assumed that Othello and Iago had a great relationship. There is
evidence throughout the play that prior to this point there had be confidence between the two men and
they were both looked at as men of excellent ability and character. Othello was known as a noble
Moor obtaining the highest military position. People also saw Iago as an upright and noble man as he
earned the nickname honest Iago. However as portrayed in the first scene and throughout the
remainder of the play, honest Iago becomes the mortal enemy of the noble Othello. We can tell that the
play is

Political Bias
Everywhere we look and listen there is bias. News stations and news reporters claim that they are
unbiased by are they really? Brooke Gladstone s, The Influencing Machine deciphers the different
types of biases. News stations such as CNN report on politics and news related to politics. The New
York Times reports on breaking news stories such as 9/11 or Boston Bombings. The Today reports on
breaking news stories and stories for the family. Bias comes in all forms and shapes from the
newspaper we read in the morning to the news we watch at night. There will always be political bias,
whether it is election season or the middle of the politicians term. It is prior knowledge of many that
CNN favors the Liberals on the political spectrum. The editors of CNN are very politically biased and
often times showcase the positive side of the Liberals and the negative side of the Conservatives. In
the article, Liberals Win Big the writer, Zelizer, writes about a major victory for the Liberals. The
Supreme Court on June 26, 2015 sided with the Liberal advocates and ruled that states cannot ban
same sex marriage. This ruling of The Supreme Court was a huge accomplishment for the Liberals,
but a major loss to the Conservatives. This article showcases the positive side of ... Show more content

We can watch, listen to it, and read it. Nothing is unbiased. No news station or newspaper is unbiased.
Everything has bias whether it is subtle or not so subtle. I have bias for almost everything. I have bias
for stores, perfume, clothes, shoes, food, and even laundry detergent. I make decisions based on bias. I
choose to watch CNN because it has a Liberal bias. I read The New York Times because I share the
same opinions as the editors. I watch The Today Show because I value the opinions of the cast.
Without knowing it, bias is a huge component in how we live our lives. Bias plays a part in what we
watch, listen and even eat. The world is made of bias whether it is good or

Compare And Contrast On Dumpster Diving And On Compassion
In On Compassion, an essay written by Barbara Lazear Ascher, compassion is observed through the
eyes of someone who seems to be more fortunate. Dumpster Diving, a personal narrative written by
Lars Eighner, features the adventures and tribulations of someone who does not easily survive in the
hectic world that is the modern day. Through these two essays, the perspectives of the privileged and
unfortunate. Each essay provides detail through personal experiences each author has had through
their lives as members of their classes.
Ascher s essay describes the ways she has seen compassion showed, through voluntary donations,
food, shelter. She openly questions what drives humans to be compassionate to each other. As a

He narrates as someone who has been down on his luck. He works alone, aside from his canine
companion. He expresses he did not expect compassion and that he found a living off of the refuse of
others. Scavenging is much more complicated than many think, there is a certain science involved.
The type of food, edibility, time it was disposed of, packaging and witnesses are all taken into account
when finding a way to survive in another s trash. There were ways, Eighner was aware of, to increase
the amount of good food in the area he scrounged from. I never placed a bogus order to increase the
supply of pizzas and I believe no one else was scavenging in this Dumpster. Despite knowing he could
increase his output of food found, he chose not to make more work for others or waste their resources.
There is compassion found in this act. His essay is informative, expemplifying the difficulty in
scavenging as a way of life. No matter how careful I am I still get dydsentery at least once a month,
often in warmer weather...Dumpster diving has serious drawbacks as a way of life. He explains how to
safely do it, but wishes it upon no one. His intelligence seems to rival those who have had great
education, as he must problem solve and evaluate his chances at a good haul. He focuses on educating
people on how to safely scavenge when absolutely

Mainstream Hip-Hop Culture
Women should be allowed to be as hardcore and sexual as we want, because men do it all the time. ~
Nicki Minaj . In the mainstream Hip Hop culture, over time it has developed from a outlaw cowboy in
American history to a hyper masculine thug of gangster rap, these are ideograms of violent
masculinity; this is the modern American definition of manhood. On the other hand, feminism has
been around since ancient greece and throughout history there have been 3 main waves of feminism.
The first wave (1830 s early 1900 s): Women s fight for equal contract and property rights, The second
wave (1960 s 1980 s): Broadening the debate, and The third wave (1990 s present): The micropolitics
of gender equality. Mainstream hip hop culture contradict feminism because in the hiphop culture men

The Benefits Of Technology In The Work Environment
Technology is a tremendous benefit nowadays within the work environment. Each technological
advancement has been created in order to facilitate the work environment and has led us to become
more efficient with the things we do. Because of it, the office environment is no longer the same as
yesterday; it has made the general convenience of our personal lives more accessible in the sense that
we no longer have to invest so much time in the work that we do. Time management and investment
has been optimized, therefore, the efforts put into every day tasks have been reduced. For example,
within the design studio, technological tools such as a smart board improves the way people meet and
share ideas. Essentially, this tool allows users to save and print notes, collaborate documents, share
information and runs video conferencing across distances. Rather than having to print an important
design for a presentation, students and faculty can visually obtain the attention of any audiences and
simply e mail notes to participants and share the work digitally. Some of the ways in which
technology has modified and improved the modern workplace are in an increase in productivity,
communication, and cost efficiency. First and foremost, technology allows us to be more efficient in
the things we do and reduce the amount of labor and time we invest to do something. Take for
example, a car or any type of vehicle. These modes of transportation are now readily available and are

Premier Investment s Gross Profit Margin has increased slightly from 59.09% in 2010 to 59.51% in
2011. The increase is not huge, but the margin is pretty good, and it reflects that the company keeps
the cost under control. On the other hand, the Gross Profit Margin for David Jones has decreased from
39.73% in 2010 to 39.11% in 2011. This decrease is not very huge, but the overall figure reflects not a
very profitable condition. These margins are well below the profitability of Premier Investments. This
means that David Jones has a relatively poor cost control. Net Profit Margin The Net Profit Margin is
a more refined measure of profitability. Gross Margin reflects half of the costs, and does not include
the effect of operating costs. However, net profit margin includes the operating costs, as well (Vance
2003). Premier Investments Net Profit Margin has decreased from 16.11% in 2010 to 9.54% in 2011.
This is a significant decrease in profitability, since the net margin has decrease by over 5%. It reflects
that the company is unable to control its operating expenses. David Jones Limited, on the other hand,
had a net Profit Margin of 12.11% in 2010, which increased to 12.62% in 2011. The increase is not
very huge, but the overall Net Profit Margin is

Compare and Contrast Ottoman and Mughal Empires Essay
The Ottoman and Mughal empires were two of the greatest and most successful empires to ever form
in history. However, they both had some similarities as well as differences. Both empires went through
tough periods of time, but at some point they also went through times of growth and prosperity.
Although the Ottoman and Mughal Empire both did not force conversions into Islam, the Ottoman s
development relied on their tough military force, while the decline of the Mughal Empire was caused
by Aurangzeb s policy of religious persecution and high taxes. Because of the Ottoman and Mughal
Empire being tolerant of other beliefs, people of all religions living in the empire lived in peace. The
Ottomans granted freedom of worship to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Babur expanded his kingdom by attacking Afghanistan and conquering Kabul after 21 years of being
in power. From that point, he crossed over the mountains into Hindustan and attacked the Dehli
Sultanate, again defeating them and gaining their land. When he died in 1530 he had conquered all of
Hindustan and controlled an empire that stretched out from the Deccan to Turkestan. These different
strategies of conquering land helped the 2 empires rule throughout Asia and, in the Ottoman s case,
some parts of Europe also. Although the Ottoman and Mughal empires had two different reasons for
decline, both were because of the leaders currently in power at the time. Even though Suleyman, the
ruler of the Ottomans, accomplished social and cultural achievements, the empire was losing ground.
Suleyman made a mistake by killing two of his sons. His third son, the incompetent Selim II, inherited
the throne. Suleyman set the pattern for the future sultans to gain and hold power. It became
customary for each new sultan to kill his brother. This practice produced a long line of weak sultans
who eventually brought ruin on the empire. Since India was mainly a land of the Hindus, The stability
of the Emperor, in this case Aurangzeb, depended on the support of the people. Without their loyalty
and cooperation, stability was impossible. When Aurangzeb came into power, he departed from the
tradition of religious tolerance and persecuted the other

Silent Film The Artist And Singin In The Rain The Artist is a film set in the silent film era that is an almost silent film itself and I found it incredibly effective that a film about the silent film era is practically silent itself. The lack of spoken dialogue and diegetic sound makes it ever so clear to the viewer that this movie is about the silent film era and it is attempting to make a statement about that style of film. Although the advent and surge in popularity of talkies has been addressed in other films, such as Singin in the Rain, The Artist is unique in that it addresses the takeover of talkies in the context of a silent film. Prior to watching The Artist, I read a short synopsis of the plot, so I somewhat knew what to expect from the plot of the film and it seemed like a film that I would enjoy. My husband had seen the film previously, and said that he enjoyed it, but because his opinions of films can differ so greatly from mine, I wasn t sure how to interpret his enjoyment of the film. Before I watched The Artist, my expectation was that it would be an enjoyable, interesting almost silent film, with what feels like a stereotypical plot line ( washed up male character has difficulties acclimating to life out of the spotlight while also having romantic feelings for up and coming female who reciprocates romantic feelings; ... • 5. Cultural Diversity For The Health Care System The term culture has a very broad definition that encompasses the values, beliefs, customs, religions, behaviors, traditions and the collective attitudes of a group of people (Williamson Harrison, 2010). In 1971, Canada was one of the first countries in the world to adopt multiculturalism as a national policy (Government of Canada, 2012). Since then, Canadians have prided themselves on being accepting of cultural diversity and recognizing equal rights for all citizens, regardless of country of origin (Government of Canada, 2012). However, cultural diversity presents challenges for the health care system as people of various cultures have different expectations and requirements of healthcare (De Miao Kemp, 2010). This is not an issue that is unique to Canada, but one that extends to all countries which encourage multiculturalism. Indeed it has been found that immigrants often experience declining health and dissatisfactory medical care compared to the native population due to issues in language, accessibility, social support, and familiarity with the health care system (Pollock, Newbold, LafreniĂšre Edge, 2012; De Miao Kemp, 2010). Therefore, there is an increased emphasis for nurses and other health care professionals to develop cultural competence. As I will show in this paper, working in a culturally diverse society requires nurses to adapt their caring strategies to cater to the cultural needs of their patients. I will then expand on how my own personal experiences ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To use or produce counterfeit money is a form of fraud and therefore highly punished. Forgery has been an issue for a very long time, as it is a problem, which is nearly as old as money itself. Counterfeiting has a large impact on the economy and society, as it is reducing the value of real money, increasing the prices due to the fact that more money is circulating in the economy, and there s also a decrease in the acceptability of paper money. • 25. Why The Chinese Market Is Responsible For The Consumption... Christine Bigham Bringing Beer to China On the surface, bringing beer to China seems to be undoubtedly a good idea. The Chinese market is responsible for the consumption of a quarter of the world s overall beer volume. Also, a tenth of the revenue from the beer industry can be traced to the Chinese market. The Chinese beer market is so massive it seems like a sure fire way to generate an increase revenue for any beer company. The Chinese market seems so viable that many western brands are looking to expand into the market possibly as a way to compensate for lagging sales in America as a result of the increase in American preference for craft beers and local brews. In order to enter this highly competitive Chinese beer market, western companies should try some various less conventional tactics to entering the marketplace. As stated in the article the Chinese market is experiencing stagnant growth in their beer industry. This stagnant phase has been attributed to the Chinese economic slowdown, population aging, as well as the increased interest of Chinese consumers in comparable beverages and local brews. In order to address these concerns, western companies should figure out how to take their brand name, but make a local version of it. Making a premium local craft beer product line specifically for the Chinese market would tap into the Chinese interests in craft beers, while also simultaneously tapping into the market of younger consumers that are pushing the ... The Oval Portrait Commentaire de texte : The Oval Portrait, Edgar Allan Poe From Selected Tales, Penguin, Popular Classics The Oval Portrait, a short story from Edgar Allan Poe, lies in the fact that art and life are deadly linked. The passion for art and painting is described as causing death since the painter s determination to make a portrait of his wife will cause her death. As in most of Poe s short stories, the setting takes an important place in the story. We could say that it has even an influence on the characters since the narrator is losing his mind while the action is taking place. Taking a Look at Celtic Music Celtic Music When Celtic music comes to mind, nowadays, the first thing people think of is something to do with maybe something to do with the group Riverdance, a famous Irish step dancing group, the Irish musician, Enya. Celtic music has almost become more of the New Age music, the relaxing and soothing comfort music that people feel the need to listen to when they relax, or just to escape from reality, but it used to be something else before it has evolved into New Age Music . It is as almost if people have forgotten what Celtic music really was and changed it from what it originally was. Celtic music, to most of the musicians of the past consider Celtic music to be classified as traditional music; the traditional musicians and composers are actually offended in modern times because now using the word Celtic almost as a marketing technique, if it has a lick of something pertaining to Ireland, throw it in the Celtic music category at the record store, and the traditionalist feel like that the entertainment industry are basically bastardizing what they felt was more important than making a quick buck, thus making people really forget where and how Celtic music got started.
