Jonestown And The Peoples Temple
A Look at Jonestown and the Peoples Temple
Many people have heard the phrase drinking the Kool aid but few actually know where the term
comes from. The story of Jonestown and the Peoples Temple is a complex one with many different
causes and can sometimes be a tough topic to learn about. Nonetheless, there is much to be learned
from it, as it shows the dangers of putting too much blind loyalty into a person or cause.
The story of Jonestown began in 1955 when a man named Jim Jones Started a Religion called Wings
of Deliverance. The group was very active with civil rights and equality, which is something that some
groups at the time looked down on and also part of the reason why Jones started his own church. Jones
and his wife were the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jones began White Night drills in an attempt to further weaken our will. A siren would come over the
loud speakers at 1 or 2 in the morning waking us from our abysmal sleep. Jones voice screaming hurry
hurry children, run to the safety of the Pavilion. We could [hear] gun fire in the jungle, so we knew
there were mercenaries out there. No one knew that in fact Jones had different young men on different
nights unbeknownst to each other shooting off their guns. We would be kept hungry, thirsty, tired,
defeated in this Pavilion until Jones determined we were safe again (Layton).
Over the course of a year after moving to Guyana, things only continued to worsen. A U.S.
Congressman named Leo Joseph Ryan had heard several accounts that Guyana was not the utopia that
Jones and some members claimed it was. He and a few of his entourage decided to visit the settlement
and see what the circumstances were. The next day, as Ryan and his crew were preparing to fly out on
the air strip, a member of Peoples Temple shot and killed them all. This lead to the final events in the
settlement at Guyana, and to what would come to be known as the Jonestown Massacre (WGBH
American Experience, b) In this event on November 18, 1978, Jones gathered everyone in the
community into the pavilion and explained to them what was happening in his own twisted way. He
told them that the outside world had turned against them and was going to

Narrative Voices in Shelley s Frankenstein and Fathers...
Narrative Voices in Shelley s Frankenstein and Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev
I have chosen to compare the narrative voices of Frankenstein and
Fathers and Sons, as the perspectives in these two novels differ from one another. Frankenstein s
narrative voice contains tales of three characters within one narrative, none belonging directly to the
author, whereas the narrative voice of Fathers and Sons, is that of the author alone.
Examples I will be using are taken from The Realist Novel (TRN), and from the novels of
Frankenstein (F) and Fathers and Sons (F S).
Mary Shelley s novel Frankenstein is an example of first person narrative, with Walton describing his
encounters in letters to his sister Margaret, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(P53 F).
This novel also includes narrative perspectives that shape the fictional world in the realist novel genre.
Instances of this come from Victors childhood, which seemed idyllic, with his mother and father
devoted to him, the innocent and helpless creature bestowed on them by heaven and I was so guided
by a silken cord that all seemed but one train of enjoyment to me (P.33 F). And when the monster is
relating his tale to Victor, of how he learnt the basic principles of survival, stating when I was
oppressed by cold, I found fire and
searching in vain for a few acorns to assuage the pangs of hunger and of his hideout I found it an
agreeable asylum from the snow and rain . (P.99 F). This perspective is plausible, giving a romantic
feel to the novel, when Frankenstein s physical attempt to reconstruct the human frame serves as an
image for the goal of Romantic artists: the spiritual regeneration of man (p.65 TRN). The pathos
generated by his tale is intensified by the monster being inspired and consoled by nature, as he
describes to Victor my senses were gratified and refreshed by a thousand scents of delight and a
thousand sights of beauty with the onset of spring, (p.111 F). Also, thankfulness towards the blessed
sun, which bestowed such joy upon me (p.134 F).
When the narrative perspective changes, we have a contrast to these joys as he is rejected as an ugly
detestable monster , at a

Essay On Standard Oil
Standard Oil began as an Ohio partnership incorporated in 1870 by John D. Rockefeller. Using
innovative business tactics, it absorbed or destroyed most of its competition in Cleveland in less than
two months.
Especially in early years, John D. Rockefeller was the single most important figure in shaping the new
oil industry. He distributed power and the tasks of policy formation to a system of committees, but
always remained the largest shareholder.
In response to state laws trying to limit the scale of companies, Rockefeller and his associates
developed innovative ways of organizing their rapidly growing company. On January 2, 1882, they
combined their disparate companies, spread across dozens of states, under a single group of trustees.

The state of Ohio successfully sued Standard, compelling the dissolution of the trust in 1892. But
Standard simply separated Standard Oil of Ohio and kept control of it. Eventually, the state of New
Jersey changed its incorporation laws to allow a company to hold shares in other companies in any
state. So, in 1899, the Standard Oil Trust, based at 26 Broadway in New York, was legally reborn as a
holding company, the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, which held stock in 41 other companies, which
controlled other companies, which in turn controlled yet other companies.
In 1904, Standard controlled 91 percent of production and 85 percent of final sales. Most of its output
was kerosene, of which 55 percent was exported around the world. After 1900 it did not try to force
competitors out of business by underpricing them. The federal Commissioner of Corporations studied
Standard s operations from the period of 1904 to 1906 and concluded that beyond question... the
dominant position of the Standard Oil Co. in the refining industry was due to unfair practices .
In 1909, the US Department of Justice sued Standard under federal anti trust law, the Sherman
Antitrust Act of 1890, for sustaining a monopoly and restraining interstate commerce by:
Rebates, preferences, and other discriminatory practices in favor of the combination by railroad
companies; restraint and monopolization by control of pipe lines, and unfair practices against
competing pipe

Impact Of John Stuart Mill On Income Inequality
ECON1401 Written Assignment 1 John Stuart Mill and Income Inequality
Many great economic thinkers throughout history has offered various differing yet interrelated views
and ideas that may prove useful to the analysis of current issues in modern economics. A persistent
issue in the modern economy is income inequality whereby the distribution of income among the
population is unequal. This means that the gap between the rich and the poor increases over time if the
issue is not appropriately addressed. In exploring the issue of income inequality in Australia, this essay
aims to analyse the issue from the perspective of a selected economic thinker namely John Stuart Mill
by: (1) providing a summary of Mill s key ideas and theories, including the different forces that may
have shaped his thinking; (2) applying Mill s conceptual framework to the income inequality problem;
and (3) offer solutions he might have suggested to address this problem, including policies that may be
adopted and institutions that may be constructed in the Australian context.
In order to consider the problem of income inequality from Mill s perspective, it is of imperative
importance to first grasp an understanding of what factors contributed to the development of his key
ideas. Known as one of the most influential figures in classical economics, Mill is more commonly
described as a philosopher and socialist than an economist due to his obstinate strive for progressive
social reform throughout his

Credit And Debit Card Processing Eco System
Credit and Debit card processing eco system are undergoing significant change recently due to the
advancements in the payment landscape. Disruptive technology in the mobile ecommerce space has
thrown new channels and players in the payment industry, making cards just as another channel to

and processing point of view. Most big players have dedicated platform, operations / IT teams to

Navigating The Csu Global Library
Option #1: Navigating the CSU Global Library
ProQuest and Business Source Complete (EBSCO) are the two databases that are being compared in
this article. Initially ProQuest seems easiest to navigate and provides a wide range of topics. EBSCO
was also chosen due to the focus on business related articles. Comparing these databases on a business
related topic will prove which one has the best outcome. Searching, navigating, narrowing the scope
and using the article tools are all important parts to identifying the right research. Badke (2014) states
in reference to searching databases that if you want results that reflect what you are seeking in your
research question, then use such terminology that comes out of your research question ... Show more

When reviewing the EBSCO help tools it explains that even in a basic search there are still search
options. Help tools similarly explain, options for selecting phrases, choosing AND/OR, and even turn
on a smart text search, which leverages technology to conduct the best results. Without limiting the
search a basic search of mobile banking turns up 11,081 items. This is a much smaller pool than what
ProQuest brought up, however, EBSCO seems to be more business focused and also lists, newspapers,
magazines, trade publications and videos.
Narrowing the Scope of the Search Results
Advanced search seems like the way to go when narrowing down the scope of the research. As you
start typing it provides the user with word suggestions. While typing mobile banking it suggested
consumer and mobile banking and mobile banking adoption. There are also AND, OR and NOT
options. Selections for full text, peer reviewed and scholarly journals are also available. There is even
an option to select all kinds of publication dates. Using suggested topics, plus using the AND feature
(consumer adoption of internet banking) AND (mobile banking adoption) within the past three years
seems like the best bet. The advanced search only narrowed down the results to 710 articles. 710
articles, is still too many and needs to be narrowed down even more. The publication chart on the side
showed the majority of the articles were published in 2015 and 2016. Knowing that technology

Psychedelic Drugs and Their Influence on Creativity and...
Psychedelic drugs affect more then creativity, they are also known to have the ability to increase the
users sense of spirituality and religion. In the academic journal, Voice of The Psychonauts, author
Levente Moro explores the correlation between spirituality, and psychedelic drug use. He claims that
when psychedelic drugs are taken in a supportive environment they have the ability to induce deeply
meaningful religious revelations and spiritual awakenings (Moro et al. 190). Psychedelic drug use in
hopes of spiritual revelations is not new, and has actually been going on for hundreds of years. The
Native American Church has been known to traditionally use psychedelic drugs for spiritual
experiences (Moro et al. 190). Some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another survey on psychedelic drugs and spirituality was conducted by Michael Lyvers and Molly
Meester in the article, Illicit use of LSD They knew that LSD and Psilocybin had a history in helping
people experience religious, or spiritual revelations, and wanted to examine this phenomenon (Lyvers,
Meester 410). To do so, Lyvers conducted a survey amongst 337 drug users. The results were related
to Lerners and Moro s results. Michael Lyvers found that over a quarter of the people who responded
used psychedelic drugs in hopes of having a spiritual, or religious experience. Lyver s results also
suggested that psychedelic drug users value spirituality more than non psychedelic drug users. Even
though psychedelic drug used has died down since the 1960s, LSD and psilocybin are still associated
with religious and spiritual experiences (Lyvers, Meester 415). The results from all three of the
surveys suggested that psychedelic drug users have a stronger spiritual connection than others.
However, this does not mean that non psychedelic users can t have spiritual or religious experiences.
These three surveys help prove that psychedelic drugs are still used to this day in order to improve
spiritual and religious experiences. Timothy Leary is a prime example of a person who s perceptions
on religion and spirituality were altered by psychedelic drug use.

Self-Acceptance In Return To Hayneville By Gregory Orr
In Return to Hayneville by Gregory Orr is taking measure of self acceptance and accepting the change
that happens in a person s life. There several topics discussed in the text that connect to the author s
substance that make it stronger and easier to find what the author is taking measure of. The topics that
add to the substance of the text, are joy. Joy in having been given a full life. Another topic is
acceptance of your past and not letting it, cut the hope inside you. Lastly a willingness to live and
change your life. In Return to Hayneville acceptance is one of the few topics that enhance the author s
substance. In the text Orr younger self is trying to accept who he is, he is trying to find his place in the
world I longed to be like them, to transcend my confusions and the agonies of my past and be taken up
into some noble simplicity beyond change (2). In this quote, we, see young Orr fight for acceptance;
trying to accept who he is. As the story continues we can see Orr finally accepting who he is and his
past. Not letting it haunt him anymore Only, Hayneville wasn t my end. It was a place where my life
could have ended but didn t, and now, almost half a century later, I stand beside that closed down,
dilapidated jail, laughing (13). In the end, he let all the terrible things that had happened to him go. In
these quotes we can see Orr using Hampl s method of description, he is very descriptive when he
describes the jail and it makes the sentences

Live in Myths
This excerpt from Live in Myths, written by Ellen Goodman is a fabulous example of all the different
kinds of relationships and their participants who have an excellent sustainability to spend their lives
living their own myths. A very evident character that the author uses to bring out the true meaning of
this piece is her friend. Her friend is continuously apologizing for her husbands unapologetic behavior,
saying, He is not really like that, when he most definitely has been this way since the time they first
started dating. The woman uses the word cranky is order to describe her husband and his actions. But
the author uses more serious and much heavier words like, erratic outbursts of anger , which helps us

All these unanswered questions bring out a lot of possibilities because it is not everyday that we see
someone like the woman. It must be so difficult for her to be living with her myth as well as her man .
Here the author personifies her myth as if it is another person altogether with different personalities. In
this excerpt the myth is usually what the person actually wants. Therefore they believe the opposite
person is like that in order to save him or herself of getting disappointed over and over again. I know
of a couple where a woman believes that her husband never cheats on her. After finding text messages
and e mails from the other woman, she yet prefers to believe that her husband could never do such a
thing. She is yet living with the man, though the man has made it very clear that he is not in love with
her anymore and would want her to move out. But she refuses. She believes she could make him fall
in love with her all over again and then things would get better. It makes me sad every time my mother
and I go to meet her. Her hope for the future gives me the strength to endure all the difficulties in my
life the way she did. But at the same time it baffles me how she could be so blind to her husband s
character and yet believe that she could bring about a change in a man who doesn t even love her

Cue for Treason Essay
Tia Berardi ENG 1D1 Ms.Oliver Monday April 2nd 2012 Several Characters Can Have Loyalty Not
everyone possesses the quality of loyalty, but those that do are worth having a relationship with. The
author of Cue for Treason, Geoffry Trease, demonstrates this trait in many of the characters. The most
loyal bond in this book, which took place very early on in the novel, was Peter and Kit s. One of the
most significant bonds has to be amongst the Secret Agents, the Queen, and all of England. Lastly, the
most heroic form of loyalty is portrayed by Tom Boyd, Peter, and Kit. Each one of these characters do
not betray each other once. So, several characters in the novel show loyalty to one another throughout.

Instead she stays to help him and not leave him on his own. No matter what he said she will not betray
him, Ride on! I bawled... Again Kit ignored my advice. She argued afterward that there was no help
she could hope to fetch, and in those circumstances she wasn t going to leave me (Trease 253). This
shows how much the two care for each other, and will not abandon each other when situations get
rough. Although the pair fights numerous times, in the end they are always there for each other, and
never betray each other s trust. But, this is not the last time loyalty was shown. The Secret Agents
show loyalty to the Queen, protecting her in every way possible, therefore demonstrating loyalty to all
of England as well. One of the first was a man by the name of Walsingham. Walsingham was one of
the very first Secret Agents, devoting his time and life to protecting the Queen, and establishing the
Secret Agent organization. Without Walsingham the Secret Agency would not be as successful, It was
Walsingham who built up a wonderful system of government spies and agents, to ferret out all the
plots that were going and scotch the most before they got too dangerous (Trease 155 6). Walsingham
established the Secret Agency, which only got improved with a mission statement of protecting the
Queen, thus keeping England under control. Tom Boyd may have been one of the most committed to

One of my favorite quotes from the book: So, I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. And
maybe we ll never know most of them. But even if we don t have the power to choose where we come
from, we can still choose where we go from there. This quote exemplifies hope, and strength. No
matter where you come from, what demons you ve faces, they are all part of who you are. You can
either let it destroy you, or learn from it and let it lead you to where you want to go. There s no need to
dwell on the past, just look towards the future. Another powerful quote from this book comes when
Sam is talking to Charlie: Why do I and everyone I love pick people who treat us like we re nothing?
We accept the love we think we deserve. Self worth is a big theme throughout the book. The
characters have troubles with knowing how to love themselves, which is a theme that I think many
people have trouble with. There are many other valuable quotes and themes throughout the book.
Charlie is an extremely relatable character. Any teenager who has ever experienced pain, confusion,

Burning Down The House By Neil Bernstein
Burning Down the House Review
America s answer for dealing with crime prevention is locking up adult offenders in correctional
facilities with little rehabilitation for reentry into society. American response for crime prevention for
juvenile s offenders is the same strategy used against adult offenders taken juvenile offenders miles
away from their environment and placed in adult like prisons. However the way juvenile our house
and treated while in the care of state corrections officer is more detrimental mental and physical health
of juvenile offenders as explained in Neil Bernstein (2014) Burning down the House. Neil Bernstein
(2014) takes an in depth look into juvenile prisons facilities practices and procedures that has a life
altering effect on juveniles entering correctional facilities. Many juveniles who entered the juvenile
justice system are victims themselves of parental mistreatment such as neglect, physical, and
emotional abuse. Once children into the juvenile system and is labeled a juvenile similar to adults
being labeled a felon. These young offenders are stigmatized as criminal with little distinction
between adults and juvenile offenders entering the prison system for the first time. Bernstein (2014)
paints a vivid picture of how incarcerated juveniles expose to a new set of challenges such as
posttraumatic stress syndrome, curtailed education, gang affiliation, and a gladiator mentality. These
challenges that can develop in juvenile facility has

Criticism In Toni Morrison s Beloved
At the beginning of the novel, the narrator identifies an unintelligible clamor as being the thoughts of
the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken. In part two of the novel, Morrison vocalizes these
unspoken thoughts through fragmented internal monologue and stream of consciousness, stylized to
represent the characters state of being. This is when the narrative moves closer to describing the core
event, and thus becomes more fragmented as it is told by those closely affected. This implies that
approaching memory causes a rupture with reality; an uncontrollable deconstruction of the self. This
first introduces Sethe, who declares Beloved, she my daughter. She mine, immediately placing

The Three Principles Of The People
In The Three Principles of the People, Sun Yat Sen presents two key criticisms of cosmopolitanism
and the destructive implications behind this ideology. The first critique is not directly linked to the
actual definition of the term, but the way in which nation states use it to further their social and
political legitimacy. Cosmopolitanism is the idea that all humans belong to one global culture and
community as global citizens. However, Sun Yat Sen criticizes which country or nations form of
government and sociocultural norms will be used as the basis for the global community.
Sun Yat Sen believes that the countries [or nations] that will establish the foundation for world
government and global culture will be those that use imperialism to maintain their position as the
ultimate powers of the world. However, before these nations attempt to govern countries, they must
rule over their own. He states, The nations which are employing imperialism to conquer others and
which are trying to maintain their own favored positions as sovereign lords of the whole world are
advocating cosmopolitanism and want the world to join them. For Yat Sen, cosmopolitanism is an
unreasonable idea because the imperialists who support it will have an even stronger position to
obliterate smaller countries that reject it. He supports this critique by using World War I as an
example.

Tentative title of your paper
Gluten Free Food Products from the Industry to the Consumer
Focus of your paper and why? The focus of my paper is on the baking industry and how it has
developed several food products that are gluten free. Some of these products were not gluten free
before, but now because of consumer preference and more gluten free consumers many products have
converted their products to gluten free. Today the industry and many consumers are making the
switch, making it harder for the industry to keep the same quality, taste, and shelf life of a non gluten
free product and making it the gluten free product many consumers want.

a.) Volume Structure in Baked Goods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
e.) Cost The use of different ingredients (i.e. Sorghum) are expensive in the making of gluten free
products, which leads to the increased cost.
What sub topics will you not cover in this paper and the justification?
a.) Type of Gluten Free Diets There is multitude of different type of gluten free diets, and rather than
reviewing diets, the science behind the product is more important, especially how it was developed in
the industry and delivered to the consumer.
b.) Politics of Gluten Free Products There will always be controversy on new food products in the
market and the information can always be skewed and not factual because new cases are brought up
everyday.
c.) Importance of Celiac Disease Celiac disease is important and discussing is not the purpose of this
paper, the rather focus of the paper is on the science behind the gluten free product from the industry

The Lgbt Rights Of Americ A Social Effort
The Road To LGBT Rights In America : A Social Effort
Imagine a world where the identity of a person jeopardizes their safety, that they must live in fear of
the world around them simply for being who they are; this is the world of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
and Transgender (LGBT) community. Despite the strides made to improve the conditions for this
group, they are still under much scrutiny as society and the government adapts to their presence. The
general public has maintained an uneasy balance of contentedness and bias, whereas the government
cannot decide its stance on the issue.
The LGBT community s adversity has persisted for quite some time in America, and has achieved
federal attention as early as 1986, during the case of Bowers v. Hardwick. In 1986, the American
Supreme Court accepted a case from Georgia regarding consensual sodomy. Hardwick claimed the
Georgia statute which criminalized sodomy was unconstitutional. Unfortunately, the majority opinion
moved in favor of Bowers, upholding the statute on the grounds that morals are allowed to dictate
legislation. This was the popular belief at the time, where strong morals and family tradition was not
just a belief, but the way of American life. The dissenting opinion contested this, claiming the case
was not a matter of whether the law was constitutional, but whether it infringed on the civil liberty of
privacy. A regretful outcome, as the majority opinion would pave the way for further discrimination

Cinematography In Batman Begins
What is cinematography? Cinematography is the ability to transform and capture all moving aspect of
a motion picture. This process cannot be acquired without the help of the cinematographer whose job
is to make sure that the shot, take and setup match the views of the director in order to depict the story
of the film. The shot, take and setup fall within four broader categories: The cinematographic
properties of the shot, the framing of the shot, the speed and length of the shot and the special effects
each of which help intrigued the audience and impel them to watch the film. Film stock, lighting and
lenses make up the cinematographic properties of the shot. In the film, Batman Begins the
cinematographer used a mixture of black, white and color film stock.

artificial light come from instruments. Depending on the direction of the light and its source the
quality of the picture will be affected. In Batman Begins a scene that stood out the most as a good

Introduction
Ukraine made the news a lot in the past year, but for anything Ukraine discovered or made. In the past
year the country has been in crisis due to the events that started off as a riot for Ukraine becoming a
part of EU and leading to annexation of Crimea and war in east part of the country. Ukraine has been
ruled by corrupt politicians and oligarchs and has been strongly influenced by Russia. These two
countries always had close ties, because of their past as Soviets countries, they share a common
language and are currently in pre war status right now (McMahon, 2014). This past year has been
rough with crisis and has affected areas like: social, cultural and economic. Ukrainian government has
failed its purpose to protect and make improvements in the best interest of the country, and now
thousands of people lost their homes and thousands have died, with hundreds being killed directly at
the request of former President Victor Yanukovych, who now has escaped and currently staying in
Russia with a political support from their side (Babich, 2014). The question now is; with everything
that s happening inside the country, should Russia be allowed to invade and destroy cities and squares,
while the peace agreement and sanctions are attempting to stop this chaos? No, but the aid from
countries like Germany and United States of America is not significant and influential enough to stop
Russia from military

The Buddha In The Attic Summary
The Buddha in the Attic is particularly a novel about the present, offering a historical allegory of the
somewhat recent experience after 9/11, more than just a reflection on Americas s past. In an interview,
Otsuka said, I saw parallels between the treatment of the Japanese after the bombing of Pearl Harbor
and the public scrutiny and surveillance under which Muslim Americans struggled in the past decade.
Thousands of Japanese women immigrated to the U.S as a result of the Omiai custom. The word
Omiai is often mistranslated as arranged marriages whereas the custom lies so close to our Indian
understanding of what we mistranslate as arrange marriages. Unlike arrange marriages, the custom

There was a sudden population burst of Japanese in America and new anti Japanese sentiments in the
year 1920 worsened the situation of the picture brides. As a result of the mass immigration and
criticism of the Japanese immigration law, the issue of passports to these picture brides had to be
stopped by the Japanese government. Community leaders started providing counseling and referral
services to the picture brides in the U.S. Kelly Simpson wrote a majority of picture brides stayed in
the United States, helping the Japanese Diaspora survive and thrive. Otsuka precisely showed the
smallest details of the lives of the Nisei and the Issei. She cleverly named the book The Buddha in the

a part of the lives of these women. Japan was a Buddhist country and their customs, traditions and the
individuals were shaped through these beliefs. The Buddha in the title represents the Japanese culture

How Did Henry Ford Impact Society
Introducing the man who practically built America. Henry Ford was an automobile manufacturer who,
in 1903, established the Ford Motor Company. In 1908, he created the Ford Model T car in the shed
located behind his home. This car was the most popular car of all time due to its cheap prices
(compared to early automobiles) and it s constant availability (Ford Model T). Henry Ford
transformed the automobile from an invention to an innovation and it continues to affect our lives
today. When the Model T was introduced to the people of America, it revolutionized literature forever.
The idea of an affordable car for the everyday man captured the imagination of authors and
filmmakers. Throughout the 1920s, the Model T was featured in dozens of movies, television series,
and books. Even today, thousands of pieces are shown to have cars originate from this American
innovation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a child, Ford was passionate about disassembling and then reassembling timepieces. In 1879, Ford
was an apprentice machinist, where he would operate and service several steam engines. Nine years
later, he became an engineer with the Edison Illuminating Company and finally had enough time and
money to experiment with gasoline engines. He invented the Ford Quadricycle, test drove it, and then
began improvements. These improvements led to the making of the Model T, introduced on October 1,
1908. The Model T was just a more basic version of what cars are driven today: steering wheel on the
left, enclosed engine and transmission, four cylinders cast in a solid block. All of this was just eight
hundred and twenty five dollars, which would be twenty two thousand, four hundred and seventy
dollars today. The price dropped every year, so the Model T soon became the best selling vehicle in

A very popular technique used in propaganda is plain folk. This is a technique when advertising makes
the average American citizen feel he can relate to the people in the advertisement. For instance, an
advertisement in Men s Health depicted a family camping trip with a honorable father smoking while
singing around a campfire to his kids. Also, an additional promotion that was found in this magazine
was a healthy in shape man smoking. This is an unrealistic situation for healthy and well respected
fathers. Another way people are shielded from the negative reality of tobacco use is through
celebrities. This is called testimonial techniques of propaganda. Testimonial technique is an extremely
important and controversial method. This technique is when a celebrity or notorious person gimmicks
people into the product by making it seem better because they use it or promote it. One example of
this is Emmit Smith using chewing tobacco. His slogan, Pinch between your cheek and gums , is
catchy and appealing to football fans. This is a extremely unhealthy promotion for young athletes. The
catch with a testimonial technique is it might appear as though the celebrity enjoys a product when in
reality he/she has never touched it.
The last technique of propaganda is Bandwagon. The bandwagon technique makes people feel like
they should go along with the crowd. This technique usually succeeds because most people have a

Purpose Statement For Equilibrium
Purpose Statement
In this experiment we will determine an equilibrium constant for specific reactions by using Beer s
law and Le Châtelier s principles. Reactions that are at equilibrium are constantly occurring in both
directions. In order to test the consistency of the equilibrium constant we will change concentrations
of the reactants to see how that affects equilibrium.
Introduction
Equilibrium can be reached when the forward and reverse reactions are occurring at the same rate. To
determine if a reaction is at equilibrium, you can record the values of the products and divide that by
the value of the reactants. For example the equation for the reaction aA + bB ( removed HTML ) cC +

Using the same process, the equilibrium concentration of Fe3+ and SCN in each mixture will also be
calculated. After finding the equilibrium constants, the mean and standard deviation of each cuvet will
be recorded using basic equations. For finding the mean, we will take the sum of all of the equilibrium
concentrations and divide that by the total number of values. The standard deviation and mean can be
more easily calculated by entering the data into excel and using their standard formulas.
Graphical Analysis
The absorbance of each of the 30 readings will be recorded and series S1 S5 will be placed into a
scatter plot comparing the amount of absorbance and the concentration of solution. From the scatter
plot, a linear regression line, slope, and correlation coefficient will be found. Calculating the
correlation coefficient will allow us to see if we correctly prepared the solutions and if there are any
outliers present that could skew our data.
Safety and Disposal

and dried to be placed back on the drying rack under the hood vent. Return 10 mL flask back to the TA

Insulation Essay
Diana Flatsoussis
Review of Literature
Insulate to cover, line, or separate with a material that prevents or reduces the passage, transfer, or
leakage of heat, electricity, or sound (Insulate ,2015, pg.1). In this experiment insulation is the main
topic. Insulation is used in many things: a house, a refrigerator, walls, clothing, and types of drinking
cups. Installation can be made of materials like styrofoam, plastic, and fiberglass. These can be used to
keep things hot or cold. Insulation is most commonly for heat and maintaining heat energy. This
experiment tests the insulation of several cups and how they keep liquids hot. Each cup used in the
experiment has some insulation. The cups have different amounts of insulation. Each of these cups are
generally used as insulators for many liquids.
Insulation slows the process of heat leaving an object. Most insulation contains lots of air spaces. The
air spaces slow the flow of heat leaving the object because the heat takes longer to travel through the
air spaces. Insulation is a material or substance that is used to stop heat, electricity, or sound from
going into or out of something (Insulation, 2015, pg. 1). Insulation is commonly thought of in ... Show

Examples Of Racism In America
Racism is the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that
race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Racism in
America started about the 15th century between the Americans and Africans, and it is seen in various
cities today. This was due to the Atlantic Slave trade which was the transportation of enslaved
Africans to the New World, America. As a result, the class discrimination perceived here is an ideal
example of racism. Therefore, bigotry can comprise of a variety of problems, harsh consequences, and
at the same time created evolutionary anti racist organizations.
Apartheid consists of a bountiful amount of issues and disagreements. Racism was arduous as it
created many restrictions for specific people. These limitations included amount of land, certain places
for visiting, and regulated education. In America, many Africans had to follow these constraints as the
Americans had considered themselves as leaders. Furthermore, these restraints developed a major race

Effects Of Pre Harvest Factors On The Final Quality Of A...
Effects of Pre harvest Factors
Pre harvest factors can influence the final quality of a product including papaya. Post harvest product
qualities develop during growing of the product and are maintained and not improved by post harvest
technologies (Hewett, 2006). Depending on the cultivar, maturity, climate, soil type and fertility, the
nutritional composition of a fruit at harvest can vary widely. For example Banana and papayas
increase in carotenoid content with maturation and ripeness, but the ascorbic acid content decrease in
bananas and increase in papayas during ripening (Lee, 2000).Even within a cultivar, there is a large
plant to plant variation and within plant variation in nutrient composition of fruit harvested from the
same field (Shewfelt, 1990).
Water availability, sunlight, fertilization and chemical applications are some of the pre harvest factors
which not only affect crop growth but also internal quality characteristics of the harvested product,
including flavor. Pre harvest treatment with aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) suppressed volatile
production in pears by 50% and heavy rains prior to harvest dilute flavor compounds in tomato
(Romani R, 1983).
Effects of Harvest Maturity
Maturity is among the critical factors influencing the abundance of volatile compounds in papaya
fruit. To optimize volatile content for flavor, papaya fruits should be harvested at an optimal eating
quality as opposed to immature papaya fruits which are often harvested in order to

Variable Selection Via Penalized Likelihood Plays An...
Variable selection via penalized likelihood plays an important role in statistics and machine learning.
In this paper, we first review some classical methods like AIC, BIC, Mallow s Cp, then discuss some
regularization methods including Lasso, adaptive Lasso, elastic net, adaptive elastic net and group
Lasso. We also consider the application of regularization methods in generalized linear model, Cox s
model and time series analysis. At the end, we give suggestions for future work. 1 Classical Method
The problem of variable selection is always the center of statistical research. Some classical methods
like best subset selection, forward selection and backward elimination are proposed to handing
massive data set. These methods are basically based on the idea of grid search. For example, the best
subset selection searches the optimal model by all possible combination of the predictors. The forward
selection find the best model by adding one predictor at each time, while the backward elimination
finds the best model by removing one predictor at each time. Although these methods are powerful
and accurate, they also cost a lot. For instance, suppose our model has 10 predictors, if we run the best
subset selection to get the optimal model, we need to compare 1024 combinations of the predictors. It
is unrealistic to perform such method in our real life because it time consuming. As a result, more
efficient methods to solve the problem of variable selection are urgently desired. In

She is introduced to us in part one of the novel as a girl who is raised by Miss Havisham and is a part
of the upper class system to torment men and break their hearts . So, when Pip goes to play at her
house she uses the term common laboring boy (65) to insult him based on the level of class he was
born into as the blacksmith , even though she does not know that she was born into a lower level of
society being the daughter of the convict, Magwitch. From this we as the readers feel sympathy
towards Pip because of the way he is treated based on the level of society he was born into. Then in
the second part of the novel when Estella comes to London Pip believes that he has a chance with her
but she ends up marrying the cruel nobleman Drummle, instead of marrying Pip who she could have
lived substantially better off with. After this we as the readers feel even more sympathic towards Pip
because he still never got the love of his life even though he had such a good understanding of Estella.
In the very end of the book Pip finds out that Estella was never happy with Drummle and he recently
died. He found her wandering through the old garden in Satis House and they discuss the about past
and they leave the garden hand in hand. I took her hand in mine, and we went out of the ruined place;
and, as the morning mists had risen long ago when I first left the forge, so, the evening mists were

Compare And Contrast Ming And Qing Dynasty
I did the Ming and Qing Dynasty because I found this more interesting than any other subject. Their
Advancements during the their lifetime was very interesting! The Ming Dynasty was the first to
happen, than it was the Qing Dynasty. These two Dynasties brought much history to our world. These
Dynasties took place in China, in the 15th 16th century. There were many new civilizations that were
created during this time period, especially the world s biggest wooden city The Forbidden City. In this
time period there was new amazing advancements in Architecture and Literature. China is known for
having the greatest architecture in the world because the enjoyed every moment of their hard beautiful
work. China Had a really strong army that brought them a lot of success in their time period. China s
population was getting bigger by the day, they had much success in everything they did but they did

They didn t want to have a lot of wars, so they tried and stay away from those kinds of political,
economic problems and just worried mostly about themselves. They tried to Make themselves look
better with their architecture and other amazing advancements they had. They had strong and powerful
leaders that would bring them much success in battle or just economically.
The Qing Dynasty was also a very successful time period like the advancing technology but they
started to have major issues that started to tear their economy down. One of the biggest things they did
in this time period is they were the first to map the whole expanse of a river with the use of modern
technology. The Qing was one of the last Dynasties there ever was in the world, they accomplished
many new things with their new advancements. Towards the end of the Qing Dynasty everything
started to fall apart, everyone started to dislike everything they were

Essay On Indentured Servants
Indentured Servitude as a Catalyst for Colonial Success The colonies were better able to adapt to the
New World and all of its trials through the use of indentured servants. Indentured servitude gave
colonists access to the new freedoms they may not have had otherwise in Britain while giving colonies
such as Virginia a chance at success. The New World involved challenges that the colonists never
could have imagined including but not limited to disease, crop differences, and Native Americans with
very different lifestyles. Colonial Growth by means of Indentured Servants Over half of the white
immigrants that arrived to the British Colonies were able to make the passage through agreeing to
indentured servitude. Indentured servants exchanged several years of labor for the cost of passage to
America and the grant of land. During the seventeenth century, indentured servants provided most of
the labor in British America. Unanticipated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Virginia where tobacco was a prominent crop, large planters bought up fertile lands, which left very
little options for freed servants. A large majority of freed servants during this time had to choose
between becoming a tenant of a planter and buying less fertile land. Decline in Indentured Servitude
With the beginnings of colonies such as New England, the need for indentured servitude throughout
British America began to decline. In New England a large portion of the settlers were middle class.
Besides even the class level of those who settled in New England, the area was a much easier place to
settle as the labor required as well as the weather was much more mild. The strongest portions of
weather was the cold climate which ultimately helped to fend off some disease and illness that may
have otherwise plagued settlers as it did in many other colony beginnings. Long Term Slave

Integumentary System Lab Report
Several tests were conducted on the patient to test her body systems; the systems tested were the
integumentary, nervous, musculoskeletal, endocrine, digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, immune,
urinary, and reproductive. While not all tests were directed at each system individually, the results
recorded give an indication of performance and can be looked at in more detail. The Integumentary
system was tested in the Calories in, Calories out module, the my Flexibility test, and the Germs
module. While evaluating this experiment, data recorded shows the patient is not taking in enough
fruits and vegetables. Insufficient intake of these food groups can play a part in the body s largest

The skin is composed of the epidermis and dermis. The epidermis, being superficial skin, while the
dermis is the tissue layer underneath that supports the epidermis. Collagen and elastic fibers are
contained in the dermis to give the skin strength and elasticity. Collagen fibers are very strong and
resist stretching, but can be easily bent or twisted. Elastic fibers permit stretching and then recoil to
their original length. The elastic fibers provide flexibility, and the collagen fibers limit that flexibility
to prevent damage to the tissue. Environmental factors or physical changes can affect the skin s
strength and elasticity. The distortion of the dermis that occurs over the abdomen during pregnancy or
after substantial weight gain can exceed the elastic limits of the skin. The resulting damage to the
dermis prevents recoiling to its original size after delivery or weight loss. Most of the collagen and
elastic fibers at any location are arranged in parallel bundles oriented to resist the forces applied to the
skin during normal movement. These bundles in the skin result in patterns called cleavage lines (The
Integumentary System, 2015). When the patient pushed the bar down during the experiment to
understand the patient s ability to stretch, the cleavage lines on the patient s skin acted upon the
movement to bent downwards. Although, if the patient were to have had a physical change in the skin
such as an injury, weight gain, or weight loss it could affect the patient s ability to bend all the way to
the ground. A cut parallel to a cleavage line will usually remain closed and heal with little scaring. A
cut at right angles to the cleavage line will be pulled open severed elastic fibers recoil, resulting in
greater scaring. For these reasons, surgeons choose to make small incisions parallel to cleavage lines

Hera Super Strength Research Paper
I m the daughter of a goddess, but I don t know which one. I have to go to Camp Half Blood to figure
it out. I arrived at Camp Half Blood, happy that I was finally here. When I saw the first person there I
turned him into a snake. Now, it was time to figure out who my goddess mom was. I figured out I m
the daughter of Hera, because I have super strength and can turn people into monsters. My weakness
is my bad temper.
In the first place, Hera has super strength, and I figured out that I had super strength. On the website
www.greekgodsandgoddesses.net it states that, Hera was also known to turn her anger towards mortals
who crossed her. This quote from this website claims that her weakness is her temper. One day at
Camp Half Blood, I was playing tag with my new friends. One of them tagged me and I had a very
bad temper after that. This shows I am the daughter of Hera because of my temper. ... Show more

Analysis Of The Marketing Ethics Of California Fitness
Fitness clubs usually have positive images since exercising is good for our health. The healthy images
might lower people s alertness towards their promotion practices. California Fitness is a well known
fitness gym and health club, it is the second large fitness chain store in Hong Kong. The company has
caused controversies because of their marketing activities. News articles reported that the Consumer
Council received a great number of complaints about California Fitness s sales practice. In this essay, I
will discuss one of California Fitness s marketing activities that involve marketing ethical issues. I
will apply the ethical values set by The American Marketing Association (AMA) in the discussion.

Finding The Right Words Of The Ancient Chinese...
Finding the Right Words
After a 40 year career in which the need to write has always featured prominently, I still find the
prospect of committing pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, a daunting experience. Don t get me
wrong, I don t dislike writing. On the contrary, I derive a great sense of satisfaction from completing
any writing task or assignment. Indeed, a lifetime of writing leads me to believe that writing well and
enjoying the experience, like most worthwhile endeavors, requires preparation, hard work, and an
unyielding commitment and desire to succeed. Furthermore, I have come to realize that in the words
of the ancient Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu, A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single
step. At the outset, I feel that every writing project is like a thousand mile journey, and I know I ll get
there in the end if only I have the courage take that first, single step if only I can find the right words.
My earliest recollection of writing is at around six or seven years old, meticulously copying longhand
letters and words in my elementary school copybook. The perfectly formed characters, uniformly
spaced at the top of each page, appealed to my sense of order encouraging me to replicate the cursive
lettering as faithfully as I could on the printed lines below. By the time I reached high school, I had
mastered the art of legible, almost calligraphic script. The mechanics were easy, creating interesting
and articulate content, not so much.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Virus Spreading
The main aim of this research is to analyze different approaches to the problem of virus spreading and
propose new methods which are based on the comprehensive analysis of previous solutions. This
paper outlines pros and cons of three models such as susceptible infected susceptible (SIS),
susceptible infected removed (SIR) and susceptible inflected removed antidotal (SIRA). From this
survey we could make a conclusion that all existing models mentioned above are appropriate for
computer network protection from the virus spreading problem. However, all these approaches have a
number of disadvantages. So, in terms of lack of safety in computers protection from virus spreading
new solutions should be found.
Introduction
Background. In my final graduation work, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In previous works researchers have frequently used epidemiological models for modeling the
dynamics of computer virus spreading. Nowadays there are two main mathematical approaches, as
described in [3]. The first one is deterministic model which is based on differential equations and is
suited for large networks, for instance, global Internet network. Another approach is stochastic model
that employ Markov chains and diffusion processes. This method suits better small local computer
networks and in my work I will focused mainly on this approach. In words, Markov chain is the
sequence of random events with a finite or countable number of outcomes, characterized by the
property that, for a fixed present the future does not depend on the past. So, from the theoretical side,
this approach will be the most suitable and urgent for modeling this kind of system, because all time
moments between different conditions of the system would be distributed with Poison distribution.
That is why in my work I decided to use stochastic model approach based on Markov

Shah V Hsbc
1. Review the decision in the case of Shah v. HSBC (2012) and evaluate the implications of the
decision for regulated financial services firms. In particular:
* What are the key issues in the case? * Outline the decision of the court * Evaluate what practical
guidelines can be taken from the case by regulated financial services firms
Under the proceeds of crimes act 2002 (POCA) all UK financial institutions and other regulated firms
not only have to report suspicions of money laundering but they must also seek consent from the
Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) to carry out any transactions which they suspect are related
to the proceeds of the crime. SOCA have a maximum of 7 working days with which to respond to any

The Court also stated that a claimant would have to demonstrate the bank had acted in bad faith before
civil liability would be entertained.
In its decision the Court of appeal did make reference to the dual pull on Banks in having to comply
with the heavy demands of a regulator whilst mitigating civil actions from potentially disgruntled
customers. It also made reference to a previous court case (De Silva v NatWest Bank 2006) where the
court made specific reference to the meaning of the word suspect . Here, in relations to the claim by
Mr Shah that the reason for the suspicion itself was irrational, negligently self induced and mistaken,
the court confirmed that HSBC merely had to think that there was a possibility, which was more than
fanciful, that the relevant facts exist when completing its SAR. On a wider note the Court also deemed
that in the future having a suspicion may constitute a good defence for Banks.
The subject of tipping off can be one of the most ambiguous subjects within financial organisations.
There are clear laws that have financial and punitive repercussions for those who recklessly or
mistakenly divulge the suspicions of the firm they are working on behalf of. The court here ruled that
the use of the legislation surrounding tipping off cannot be endlessly relied on when declining the
request of

  • 2. Jonestown And The Peoples Temple A Look at Jonestown and the Peoples Temple Many people have heard the phrase drinking the Kool aid but few actually know where the term comes from. The story of Jonestown and the Peoples Temple is a complex one with many different causes and can sometimes be a tough topic to learn about. Nonetheless, there is much to be learned from it, as it shows the dangers of putting too much blind loyalty into a person or cause. The story of Jonestown began in 1955 when a man named Jim Jones Started a Religion called Wings of Deliverance. The group was very active with civil rights and equality, which is something that some groups at the time looked down on and also part of the reason why Jones started his own church. Jones and his wife were the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jones began White Night drills in an attempt to further weaken our will. A siren would come over the loud speakers at 1 or 2 in the morning waking us from our abysmal sleep. Jones voice screaming hurry hurry children, run to the safety of the Pavilion. We could [hear] gun fire in the jungle, so we knew there were mercenaries out there. No one knew that in fact Jones had different young men on different nights unbeknownst to each other shooting off their guns. We would be kept hungry, thirsty, tired, defeated in this Pavilion until Jones determined we were safe again (Layton). Over the course of a year after moving to Guyana, things only continued to worsen. A U.S. Congressman named Leo Joseph Ryan had heard several accounts that Guyana was not the utopia that Jones and some members claimed it was. He and a few of his entourage decided to visit the settlement and see what the circumstances were. The next day, as Ryan and his crew were preparing to fly out on the air strip, a member of Peoples Temple shot and killed them all. This lead to the final events in the settlement at Guyana, and to what would come to be known as the Jonestown Massacre (WGBH American Experience, b) In this event on November 18, 1978, Jones gathered everyone in the community into the pavilion and explained to them what was happening in his own twisted way. He told them that the outside world had turned against them and was going to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Narrative Voices in Shelley s Frankenstein and Fathers... Narrative Voices in Shelley s Frankenstein and Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev I have chosen to compare the narrative voices of Frankenstein and Fathers and Sons, as the perspectives in these two novels differ from one another. Frankenstein s narrative voice contains tales of three characters within one narrative, none belonging directly to the author, whereas the narrative voice of Fathers and Sons, is that of the author alone. Examples I will be using are taken from The Realist Novel (TRN), and from the novels of Frankenstein (F) and Fathers and Sons (F S). Mary Shelley s novel Frankenstein is an example of first person narrative, with Walton describing his encounters in letters to his sister Margaret, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (P53 F). This novel also includes narrative perspectives that shape the fictional world in the realist novel genre. Instances of this come from Victors childhood, which seemed idyllic, with his mother and father devoted to him, the innocent and helpless creature bestowed on them by heaven and I was so guided by a silken cord that all seemed but one train of enjoyment to me (P.33 F). And when the monster is relating his tale to Victor, of how he learnt the basic principles of survival, stating when I was oppressed by cold, I found fire and searching in vain for a few acorns to assuage the pangs of hunger and of his hideout I found it an agreeable asylum from the snow and rain . (P.99 F). This perspective is plausible, giving a romantic feel to the novel, when Frankenstein s physical attempt to reconstruct the human frame serves as an image for the goal of Romantic artists: the spiritual regeneration of man (p.65 TRN). The pathos generated by his tale is intensified by the monster being inspired and consoled by nature, as he describes to Victor my senses were gratified and refreshed by a thousand scents of delight and a thousand sights of beauty with the onset of spring, (p.111 F). Also, thankfulness towards the blessed sun, which bestowed such joy upon me (p.134 F). When the narrative perspective changes, we have a contrast to these joys as he is rejected as an ugly detestable monster , at a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay On Standard Oil Standard Oil began as an Ohio partnership incorporated in 1870 by John D. Rockefeller. Using innovative business tactics, it absorbed or destroyed most of its competition in Cleveland in less than two months. Especially in early years, John D. Rockefeller was the single most important figure in shaping the new oil industry. He distributed power and the tasks of policy formation to a system of committees, but always remained the largest shareholder. In response to state laws trying to limit the scale of companies, Rockefeller and his associates developed innovative ways of organizing their rapidly growing company. On January 2, 1882, they combined their disparate companies, spread across dozens of states, under a single group of trustees. By ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The state of Ohio successfully sued Standard, compelling the dissolution of the trust in 1892. But Standard simply separated Standard Oil of Ohio and kept control of it. Eventually, the state of New Jersey changed its incorporation laws to allow a company to hold shares in other companies in any state. So, in 1899, the Standard Oil Trust, based at 26 Broadway in New York, was legally reborn as a holding company, the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, which held stock in 41 other companies, which controlled other companies, which in turn controlled yet other companies. In 1904, Standard controlled 91 percent of production and 85 percent of final sales. Most of its output was kerosene, of which 55 percent was exported around the world. After 1900 it did not try to force competitors out of business by underpricing them. The federal Commissioner of Corporations studied Standard s operations from the period of 1904 to 1906 and concluded that beyond question... the dominant position of the Standard Oil Co. in the refining industry was due to unfair practices . In 1909, the US Department of Justice sued Standard under federal anti trust law, the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, for sustaining a monopoly and restraining interstate commerce by: Rebates, preferences, and other discriminatory practices in favor of the combination by railroad companies; restraint and monopolization by control of pipe lines, and unfair practices against competing pipe ... • 6. Impact Of John Stuart Mill On Income Inequality ECON1401 Written Assignment 1 John Stuart Mill and Income Inequality Many great economic thinkers throughout history has offered various differing yet interrelated views and ideas that may prove useful to the analysis of current issues in modern economics. A persistent issue in the modern economy is income inequality whereby the distribution of income among the population is unequal. This means that the gap between the rich and the poor increases over time if the issue is not appropriately addressed. In exploring the issue of income inequality in Australia, this essay aims to analyse the issue from the perspective of a selected economic thinker namely John Stuart Mill by: (1) providing a summary of Mill s key ideas and theories, including the different forces that may have shaped his thinking; (2) applying Mill s conceptual framework to the income inequality problem; and (3) offer solutions he might have suggested to address this problem, including policies that may be adopted and institutions that may be constructed in the Australian context. In order to consider the problem of income inequality from Mill s perspective, it is of imperative importance to first grasp an understanding of what factors contributed to the development of his key ideas. Known as one of the most influential figures in classical economics, Mill is more commonly described as a philosopher and socialist than an economist due to his obstinate strive for progressive social reform throughout his ... Initially ProQuest seems easiest to navigate and provides a wide range of topics. EBSCO was also chosen due to the focus on business related articles. Comparing these databases on a business related topic will prove which one has the best outcome. Searching, navigating, narrowing the scope and using the article tools are all important parts to identifying the right research. Badke (2014) states in reference to searching databases that if you want results that reflect what you are seeking in your research question, then use such terminology that comes out of your research question ... Without limiting the search a basic search of mobile banking turns up 11,081 items. This is a much smaller pool than what ProQuest brought up, however, EBSCO seems to be more business focused and also lists, newspapers, magazines, trade publications and videos. Narrowing the Scope of the Search Results Advanced search seems like the way to go when narrowing down the scope of the research. As you start typing it provides the user with word suggestions. While typing mobile banking it suggested consumer and mobile banking and mobile banking adoption. There are also AND, OR and NOT options. Selections for full text, peer reviewed and scholarly journals are also available. There is even an option to select all kinds of publication dates. Using suggested topics, plus using the AND feature (consumer adoption of internet banking) AND (mobile banking adoption) within the past three years seems like the best bet. The advanced search only narrowed down the results to 710 articles. 710 articles, is still too many and needs to be narrowed down even more. Psychedelic drugs affect more then creativity, they are also known to have the ability to increase the users sense of spirituality and religion. In the academic journal, Voice of The Psychonauts, author Levente Moro explores the correlation between spirituality, and psychedelic drug use. He claims that when psychedelic drugs are taken in a supportive environment they have the ability to induce deeply meaningful religious revelations and spiritual awakenings (Moro et al. 190). Another survey on psychedelic drugs and spirituality was conducted by Michael Lyvers and Molly Meester in the article, Illicit use of LSD They knew that LSD and Psilocybin had a history in helping people experience religious, or spiritual revelations, and wanted to examine this phenomenon (Lyvers, Meester 410). To do so, Lyvers conducted a survey amongst 337 drug users. The results were related to Lerners and Moro s results. Michael Lyvers found that over a quarter of the people who responded used psychedelic drugs in hopes of having a spiritual, or religious experience. Lyver s results also suggested that psychedelic drug users value spirituality more than non psychedelic drug users. Even though psychedelic drug used has died down since the 1960s, LSD and psilocybin are still associated with religious and spiritual experiences (Lyvers, Meester 415). The results from all three of the surveys suggested that psychedelic drug users have a stronger spiritual connection than others. However, this does not mean that non psychedelic users can t have spiritual or religious experiences. These three surveys help prove that psychedelic drugs are still used to this day in order to improve spiritual and religious experiences. Her friend is continuously apologizing for her husbands unapologetic behavior, saying, He is not really like that, when he most definitely has been this way since the time they first started dating. In this excerpt the myth is usually what the person actually wants. Therefore they believe the opposite person is like that in order to save him or herself of getting disappointed over and over again. I know of a couple where a woman believes that her husband never cheats on her. After finding text messages and e mails from the other woman, she yet prefers to believe that her husband could never do such a thing. She is yet living with the man, though the man has made it very clear that he is not in love with her anymore and would want her to move out. But she refuses. She believes she could make him fall in love with her all over again and then things would get better. It makes me sad every time my mother and I go to meet her. Her hope for the future gives me the strength to endure all the difficulties in my life the way she did. But at the same time it baffles me how she could be so blind to her husband s character and yet believe that she could bring about a change in a man who doesn t even love her ... They love and care about their granddaughters very much. Children enjoy spending time with their grandparents because they are full of stories and always seem to have candy or cookie with them. Children are always excited about their grandparents visitation especially on holidays and birthdays. They hoped that one day they will see their granddaughters grow up and change the world. In the long run, their life turned upside down, and they never get to see that day comes to pass. One day they are here and then they are gone, leaving you behind wondering what you could have done to keep them longer. First of all, my great grandmother Akosua, was not just an ordinary woman. She was talented, adventurous, friendly and joyful person you will ever meet. Cue for Treason Essay Tia Berardi ENG 1D1 Ms.Oliver Monday April 2nd 2012 Several Characters Can Have Loyalty Not everyone possesses the quality of loyalty, but those that do are worth having a relationship with. The author of Cue for Treason, Geoffry Trease, demonstrates this trait in many of the characters. The most loyal bond in this book, which took place very early on in the novel, was Peter and Kit s. One of the most significant bonds has to be amongst the Secret Agents, the Queen, and all of England. Lastly, the most heroic form of loyalty is portrayed by Tom Boyd, Peter, and Kit. This shows how much the two care for each other, and will not abandon each other when situations get rough. Although the pair fights numerous times, in the end they are always there for each other, and never betray each other s trust. But, this is not the last time loyalty was shown. The Secret Agents show loyalty to the Queen, protecting her in every way possible, therefore demonstrating loyalty to all of England as well. One of the first was a man by the name of Walsingham. Walsingham was one of the very first Secret Agents, devoting his time and life to protecting the Queen, and establishing the Secret Agent organization. Without Walsingham the Secret Agency would not be as successful, It was Walsingham who built up a wonderful system of government spies and agents, to ferret out all the plots that were going and scotch the most before they got too dangerous (Trease 155 6). Walsingham established the Secret Agency, which only got improved with a mission statement of protecting the Queen, thus keeping England under control. In part two of the novel, Morrison vocalizes these unspoken thoughts through fragmented internal monologue and stream of consciousness, stylized to represent the characters state of being. This is when the narrative moves closer to describing the core event, and thus becomes more fragmented as it is told by those closely affected. • 23. The Three Principles Of The People In The Three Principles of the People, Sun Yat Sen presents two key criticisms of cosmopolitanism and the destructive implications behind this ideology. The first critique is not directly linked to the actual definition of the term, but the way in which nation states use it to further their social and political legitimacy. Cosmopolitanism is the idea that all humans belong to one global culture and community as global citizens. However, Sun Yat Sen criticizes which country or nations form of government and sociocultural norms will be used as the basis for the global community. Sun Yat Sen believes that the countries [or nations] that will establish the foundation for world government and global culture will be those that use imperialism to maintain their position as the ultimate powers of the world. However, before these nations attempt to govern countries, they must rule over their own. He states, The nations which are employing imperialism to conquer others and which are trying to maintain their own favored positions as sovereign lords of the whole world are advocating cosmopolitanism and want the world to join them. For Yat Sen, cosmopolitanism is an unreasonable idea because the imperialists who support it will have an even stronger position to obliterate smaller countries that reject it. He supports this critique by using World War I as an example. European countries were attempting to solve the problem with Turkey, one they did not understand, which contributed ... Despite the strides made to improve the conditions for this group, they are still under much scrutiny as society and the government adapts to their presence. The general public has maintained an uneasy balance of contentedness and bias, whereas the government cannot decide its stance on the issue. The LGBT community s adversity has persisted for quite some time in America, and has achieved federal attention as early as 1986, during the case of Bowers v. Hardwick. In 1986, the American Supreme Court accepted a case from Georgia regarding consensual sodomy. Hardwick claimed the Georgia statute which criminalized sodomy was unconstitutional. Unfortunately, the majority opinion moved in favor of Bowers, upholding the statute on the grounds that morals are allowed to dictate legislation. This was the popular belief at the time, where strong morals and family tradition was not just a belief, but the way of American life. The dissenting opinion contested this, claiming the case was not a matter of whether the law was constitutional, but whether it infringed on the civil liberty of privacy. Reactions that are at equilibrium are constantly occurring in both directions. Introduction Equilibrium can be reached when the forward and reverse reactions are occurring at the same rate. • 36. Insulation Essay Diana Flatsoussis Review of Literature Insulate to cover, line, or separate with a material that prevents or reduces the passage, transfer, or leakage of heat, electricity, or sound (Insulate ,2015, pg.1). In this experiment insulation is the main topic. Insulation is used in many things: a house, a refrigerator, walls, clothing, and types of drinking cups. Installation can be made of materials like styrofoam, plastic, and fiberglass. These can be used to keep things hot or cold. Insulation is most commonly for heat and maintaining heat energy. This experiment tests the insulation of several cups and how they keep liquids hot. Each cup used in the experiment has some insulation. The cups have different amounts of insulation. Each of these cups are generally used as insulators for many liquids. Insulation slows the process of heat leaving an object. Most insulation contains lots of air spaces. The air spaces slow the flow of heat leaving the object because the heat takes longer to travel through the air spaces. Insulation is a material or substance that is used to stop heat, electricity, or sound from going into or out of something (Insulation, 2015, pg. 1). Insulation is commonly thought of in ... • 37. Examples Of Racism In America Racism is the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Racism in America started about the 15th century between the Americans and Africans, and it is seen in various cities today. This was due to the Atlantic Slave trade which was the transportation of enslaved Africans to the New World, America. As a result, the class discrimination perceived here is an ideal example of racism. Therefore, bigotry can comprise of a variety of problems, harsh consequences, and at the same time created evolutionary anti racist organizations. Apartheid consists of a bountiful amount of issues and disagreements. Racism was arduous as it created many restrictions for specific people. These limitations included amount of land, certain places for visiting, and regulated education. In America, many Africans had to follow these constraints as the Americans had considered themselves as leaders. Furthermore, these restraints developed a major race discrimination between the Americans and Africans. As a result, this led to many crimes such as murder, robbery, and ... Africans have a more probable chance of going to jail compared to an American. The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics concluded that an African American male born in 2001 has a 32% chance of going to jail in his lifetime, and a white male only has a 6% chance. Although their endings were very different, they both became better because of them. They also show us that the best way to respond to conflict is to not back down even in extreme situations. These real people showed us how they didn t back down and, eventually, with hard work and courage, they made the world a better place. Malala Yousafzai s story starts when she was around eleven years old. Education for girls and women was always discouraged, but now the people of Pakistan were being punished for going to school. He also states that Malala has reframed the assassination attempt in her mind so she does not feel helpless and victimized but rather purposeful and empowered. If they come to kill me I will tell them what they are trying to do is wrong, that education is our basic right. • 39. Effects Of Pre Harvest Factors On The Final Quality Of A... Effects of Pre harvest Factors Pre harvest factors can influence the final quality of a product including papaya. Post harvest product qualities develop during growing of the product and are maintained and not improved by post harvest technologies (Hewett, 2006). Depending on the cultivar, maturity, climate, soil type and fertility, the nutritional composition of a fruit at harvest can vary widely. For example Banana and papayas increase in carotenoid content with maturation and ripeness, but the ascorbic acid content decrease in bananas and increase in papayas during ripening (Lee, 2000).Even within a cultivar, there is a large plant to plant variation and within plant variation in nutrient composition of fruit harvested from the same field (Shewfelt, 1990). Water availability, sunlight, fertilization and chemical applications are some of the pre harvest factors which not only affect crop growth but also internal quality characteristics of the harvested product, including flavor. Pre harvest treatment with aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) suppressed volatile production in pears by 50% and heavy rains prior to harvest dilute flavor compounds in tomato (Romani R, 1983). Effects of Harvest Maturity Maturity is among the critical factors influencing the abundance of volatile compounds in papaya fruit. To optimize volatile content for flavor, papaya fruits should be harvested at an optimal eating quality as opposed to immature papaya fruits which are often harvested in order to ... In this paper, we first review some classical methods like AIC, BIC, Mallow s Cp, then discuss some regularization methods including Lasso, adaptive Lasso, elastic net, adaptive elastic net and group Lasso. We also consider the application of regularization methods in generalized linear model, Cox s model and time series analysis. At the end, we give suggestions for future work. 1 Classical Method The problem of variable selection is always the center of statistical research. Some classical methods like best subset selection, forward selection and backward elimination are proposed to handing massive data set. These methods are basically based on the idea of grid search. For example, the best subset selection searches the optimal model by all possible combination of the predictors. The forward selection find the best model by adding one predictor at each time, while the backward elimination finds the best model by removing one predictor at each time. Although these methods are powerful and accurate, they also cost a lot. For instance, suppose our model has 10 predictors, if we run the best subset selection to get the optimal model, we need to compare 1024 combinations of the predictors. It is unrealistic to perform such method in our real life because it time consuming. As a result, more efficient methods to solve the problem of variable selection are urgently desired. In ... It is having the feelings of pity and sorrow for someone else s misfortune and having an understanding between people and their common feelings. In this novel Great Expectations, Charles Dickens uses the protagonist Pip and his relationships with other characters to explore that idea. In this novel Pip s character is used to create sympathy for him through his relationships with other characters like his brotherly relationship with Herbert, his father and son like bond with Magwitch, and his love life with Estella. So, when Pip goes to play at her house she uses the term common laboring boy (65) to insult him based on the level of class he was born into as the blacksmith , even though she does not know that she was born into a lower level of society being the daughter of the convict, Magwitch. From this we as the readers feel sympathy towards Pip because of the way he is treated based on the level of society he was born into. Then in the second part of the novel when Estella comes to London Pip believes that he has a chance with her but she ends up marrying the cruel nobleman Drummle, instead of marrying Pip who she could have lived substantially better off with. After this we as the readers feel even more sympathic towards Pip because he still never got the love of his life even though he had such a good understanding of Estella. In the very end of the book Pip finds out that Estella was never happy with Drummle and he recently died. Essay On Indentured Servants Indentured Servitude as a Catalyst for Colonial Success The colonies were better able to adapt to the New World and all of its trials through the use of indentured servants. Indentured servitude gave colonists access to the new freedoms they may not have had otherwise in Britain while giving colonies such as Virginia a chance at success. The New World involved challenges that the colonists never could have imagined including but not limited to disease, crop differences, and Native Americans with very different lifestyles. Colonial Growth by means of Indentured Servants Over half of the white immigrants that arrived to the British Colonies were able to make the passage through agreeing to indentured servitude. The skin is composed of the epidermis and dermis. The epidermis, being superficial skin, while the dermis is the tissue layer underneath that supports the epidermis. Collagen and elastic fibers are contained in the dermis to give the skin strength and elasticity. Collagen fibers are very strong and resist stretching, but can be easily bent or twisted. Elastic fibers permit stretching and then recoil to their original length. The elastic fibers provide flexibility, and the collagen fibers limit that flexibility to prevent damage to the tissue. Environmental factors or physical changes can affect the skin s strength and elasticity. The distortion of the dermis that occurs over the abdomen during pregnancy or after substantial weight gain can exceed the elastic limits of the skin. The resulting damage to the dermis prevents recoiling to its original size after delivery or weight loss. Most of the collagen and elastic fibers at any location are arranged in parallel bundles oriented to resist the forces applied to the skin during normal movement. These bundles in the skin result in patterns called cleavage lines (The Integumentary System, 2015). When the patient pushed the bar down during the experiment to understand the patient s ability to stretch, the cleavage lines on the patient s skin acted upon the movement to bent downwards. Although, if the patient were to have had a physical change in the skin such as an injury, weight gain, or weight loss it could affect the patient s ability to bend all the way to the ground. A cut parallel to a cleavage line will usually remain closed and heal with little scaring. A cut at right angles to the cleavage line will be pulled open severed elastic fibers recoil, resulting in greater scaring. Finding the Right Words After a 40 year career in which the need to write has always featured prominently, I still find the prospect of committing pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, a daunting experience. Don t get me wrong, I don t dislike writing. On the contrary, I derive a great sense of satisfaction from completing any writing task or assignment. Indeed, a lifetime of writing leads me to believe that writing well and enjoying the experience, like most worthwhile endeavors, requires preparation, hard work, and an unyielding commitment and desire to succeed. Furthermore, I have come to realize that in the words of the ancient Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu, A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step. At the outset, I feel that every writing project is like a thousand mile journey, and I know I ll get there in the end if only I have the courage take that first, single step if only I can find the right words. My earliest recollection of writing is at around six or seven years old, meticulously copying longhand letters and words in my elementary school copybook. The perfectly formed characters, uniformly spaced at the top of each page, appealed to my sense of order encouraging me to replicate the cursive lettering as faithfully as I could on the printed lines below. By the time I reached high school, I had mastered the art of legible, almost calligraphic script. The mechanics were easy, creating interesting and articulate content, not so much. ... This paper outlines pros and cons of three models such as susceptible infected susceptible (SIS), susceptible infected removed (SIR) and susceptible inflected removed antidotal (SIRA). From this survey we could make a conclusion that all existing models mentioned above are appropriate for computer network protection from the virus spreading problem. Another approach is stochastic model that employ Markov chains and diffusion processes. This method suits better small local computer networks and in my work I will focused mainly on this approach. In words, Markov chain is the sequence of random events with a finite or countable number of outcomes, characterized by the property that, for a fixed present the future does not depend on the past. So, from the theoretical side, this approach will be the most suitable and urgent for modeling this kind of system, because all time moments between different conditions of the system would be distributed with Poison distribution. It also made reference to a previous court case (De Silva v NatWest Bank 2006) where the court made specific reference to the meaning of the word suspect .
