Though, scrolling through the pages of history, we sometimes see the portrayal of leading figures that
have been depicted differently in numerous descriptions. When it comes to one of the most dreading
military leaders throughout history, Attila, who unified and ruled over the the barbaric nomadic called
the Huns. Many accounts depicted such leader in different or similar horizons but with numerous
approaches and backgrounds. Prosper, a Christian reporter; Jordanes, an official in the Roman

Plato s Socratic dialogues the Apology and the Republic demonstrate the philosopher s public position
and role within the state, albeit in contrasting forms. In this paper, I will argue that philosophy in the
form of the Socratic public benefactor (3d6) presented in the Apology rather than the philosopher king
theorized in the Republic is advantageous for the State to a considerable extent as it leads to greater
accountability and wisdom in decision making.
In his early Socratic dialogue the Apology, Plato presents Socrates philosophical defence of his role
within the Athenian society. Herein, one of Socrates primary defences against the accusations levied
against him is that if the Athenians condemn him to death they won t easily find another like [him]
(Apology, 30e). This bold statement is made in the context of Socrates argument that he is a sort of
gadfly, given to the city [state] by the God; and the state is like a great and noble steed ... [I] am
always fastening upon you, arousing and persuading and reproaching you. (30e) . Hence, Socrates
introduces the notion that he, as a philosopher, serves as a monitor for the state. A role that stimulates
the state, one that facilitates and encourages a cross examination of the decision making. However,
Socrates does recognize and insist that such a figure must be independent from politics and fight for
what s just (32a) in private rather than public. He suggests that had he engaged in politics, he would
have perished long ago . Rationalizing this claim is his argument that if a philosopher as he should

and prevent them from occurring, he would not be spared by the populace.
Contrastingly, in the middle Socratic dialogue the Republic, Plato introduces through the character of
Socrates the notion of a philosopher king. Standing in stark contrast to Socrates analogy of the gadfly

In today s society there are many issues involving racial inequality. One major issue affecting college
students and high school seniors is affirmative action. Affirmative action is a policy favoring those
who tend to suffer from discrimination, especially minorities. Affirmative action started in the 1970 s
and its purpose is to help universities better diversify their campus with different demographics. At the
time, affirmative action was a means of restitution for human rights abuse African Americans suffered
for generations. Today, affirmative action is not limited to blacks, and is a controversial issue due to

Those who argue in favor of affirmative action argue that the policy is necessary because it allows

problems than it is solving, and can be remedied through alternative rehabilitation and the revision of
sentencing for minor offenses.
