My Family s Slave, By Alex Tizon
What would you do if your family had a woman working for them throughout your whole life? What
about when you watch her get mistreated and find her sleeping in corners, watching her teeth rot,
exhausted all the time and working as a mother and servant without pay?Would you defend her? Alex
Tizon did. In My Family s Slave , Alex Tizon tells a story about a woman named Lola who became a
great part of his life. After understanding what Lola was as a young boy and watched how she was
treated, the author reveals how as he grew older he tries to enhance Lola s life. He confesses that by
the time he starts to give her a taste of freedom she is 75 years old and cannot do much. But
throughout those eleven free years, he tries to make up for everything.
Lola or Eudocia Tomas Pulido, her real name, is enslaved at 18 years old to Tizon s mother as a gift
when she is a child. In the second paragraph, the author starts off saying, she was 4 foot 11, with
mocha brown skin and almond eyes that I can still see looking into mine (21). He chooses this to
describe Lola and his first memory of her to show the kind love he has for her. Soon after, Tizon goes
into the unfortunate memories he carries, Her days began before everyone else woke and ended after
we went to bed. She prepared three meals a day, cleaned the house, waited on my parents, and took
care of my four siblings and me. My parents never paid her, and they scolded her constantly. She wasn

Did The Three Witches Contribute To The Downfall Of Macbeth
Did the three witches really contribute to the downfall of Macbeth? I believe the witches hardly
contributed to Macbeth s downfall, however how innocent are they in this event? The witches tell
Macbeth his prophecy and promise he will become a high ruler saying All hail, Macbeth! Hail to you,
thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be
king hereafter! . These are possibly the words that had helped start the downfall of Macbeth, giving
him the idea that Macbeth could possibly rule one day. The witches are master manipulators, they did
not use and magic, blackmail of physical force in order to convince Macbeth what he must do in order
to become king, they did not give him the idea of murder, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lady Macbeth contributes largely to the downfall of Macbeth, being possibly the main cause of the
situation they are placed in with the killing of King Duncan. Lady Macbeth is a master manipulator,
she uses Macbeths love for her and insults his manhood saying things such as too full o the milk of
human kindness , meaning that Macbeth is too gentle and weak to murder Duncan, undermining him.
Lady Macbeth is a strong woman, believing kindness and sympathy is weakness, however Macbeth is
a caring and loyal man meaning Lady Macbeths mind and Will easily overthrows Macbeths morals
and will in order to gain control. Come you spirits, That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, And
fill me from the crown to the toe top full Of direst cruelty! , this quote by Lady Macbeth, asking the
spirits to grant her cruelty in order to kill Duncan without caring shows the extent of her will to
become queen and how she will stop at nothing. Macbeth is fighting his thoughts on whether or not he
wishes to kill Duncan in order to gain control, Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth I dare do all that may
become a man; who dares do more is none , Lady Macbeth effectively uses her invincible will of evil
intentions to manipulate his thoughts. Lady Macbeth known that Macbeth is a loyal man who loves

Blended Family Relationships
stepfamilies may sometimes have lack of parental warmth and negative interactions, which leads to
disruptiveness and/or antisocial behaviors. It takes time for the adolescent to adjust to the loss of a
parent in a household.
Adolescents will experience their custodial parent being unavailable, which makes the adolescent feel
like they have no parental support. Also, they will deal with stress not only from the divorce but from
remarrying. The adolescent who has a relationship with a non parental adult, friends, or an attachment
to school may counterpoise a stressful environment. Researchers found that girls are more likely to
confide in friends about their situation at home. Boys tend to spend time with their friends without
sharing what is on their mind, or spend time by themselves. Building a relationship with others as such
as neighbors will increase the chance of the adolescent not having a negative outcome. Adolescents in
divorced or blended families will be more likely to experience negative outcomes, because of the lack
of parental support (Rodgers Rose, 2002).

Spanish American Imperialism
When it comes to the topic of the Spanish American War of 1898, most Americans may believe
humanitarian aspects influenced the United States role in Cuba. In a way, the public thought America
would be freeing Cuba from the atrocities the Spaniards had laid upon them. One source about the
reconcentration camps outlines what the Cubans faced, Four hundred and sixty women and children
thrown on the ground, heaped pell mell as animals, some in a dying condition, others sick and others
dead... Sources such as these portrayed aspects of yellow journalism which exaggerated stories and
influenced the emotions of the American public. Where the people s argument ends, is whether or not
freeing Cuba from Spanish rule was the sole reason behind American ... Show more content on

Although these historians do not believe Social Darwinism led to America becoming a world power,
they do agree imperialism in the United States was led by their economic need. In the previous quote
by William McKinley, this claim of an economic need is supported, as the president clearly states that
acquiring the Philippines would greatly increase American trade. Additionally, in a speech by the
former senator of Indiana, Albert J. Beveridge, America s economic reasons for becoming involved in
the Spanish American war are portrayed. The text exemplifies, in Cuba, alone, there are 15,000,000
acres of forest unacquainted with the axe. There are exhaustless mines of iron... There are millions of
acres yet explores... It means new employment and better wages for every laboring man in the Union .
This entire quote is the senator marveling over the economic possibilities if the United States were to
acquire Cuba. If the America s motivation was simply to free the Cubans from Spanish rule, than
Beveridge would not have uttered these words at all during his speech. The truth is the United States
wanted to increase their economic dominance as well, for it is difficult to become a world power
without financial stability. By expanding American markets into Cuba, the United States can reap the
benefits from the resources Cuba has but

Systematic Review Paper
Abstract
Traditionally, systematic reviews (SR) are descriptive secondary research, which may or may not be
accompanied by statistical methods (metaanalysis) of pooling the results of primary, quantitative
studies to answer a clinical question or test a hypothesis (Chalmers 1996). Similarly, qualitative
primary studies can be pooled and synthesised in order to develop new theories to aid decision
making, re shape policies, and influence professional practices. Over the past 20 years, patient and
public involvement (PPI) in research have become increasingly crucial, which has fuelled the
increasing popularity of qualitative research as better ways of incorporating public and patient views
into health, social and economic policies. There is however a confusing array of methods available for
conducting secondary qualitative research. In this paper epistemological concepts guiding a number of
methods are discussed. The consensus on enhancing transparency in reporting the synthesis of
qualitative research (ENTREQ) is also reviewed
Introduction
Synthesis of qualitative data has never been as popular as meta analysis. It is however becoming an
increasingly useful secondary research tool in a diverse area of problem solutions, ranging from
leadership and management problems (Walsh 2005; Galuska 2012), sociology (Wilder 2014) to
clinical research questions (Beck 2002; Kennedy et al. 2003 and Orri 2014). Secondary research could

Coffee, Tea, And Tea
The history of the world can be viewed through six drinks, beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and Coca
Cola, as told in the book A History of the World in Six Glasses by Tom Standage. However, focusing
on three drinks in particular, rum, coffee, and tea, an enormous story can be told. Those three drinks
impacted the world in many ways, especially the cultures that consumed or traded them. In order to
produce Rum, many Africans were brought to the Americas to work in servitude. This caused a culture
shift, because now you had two very different cultures working closely together, but one was
considered superior to the other. Coffee sparked the emergence of enlightened thinkers, whose
conversations and writings profoundly shaped European culture. Tea helped Britain retain the colossal
empire they are often credited with. This is because of a secondary effect of tea as it helped to create
the British Empire, which in turn impacted the world colossally. Coffee, tea, and rum catapulted the
world into major cultural shifts.
During the 17th and 18th centuries when rum was introduced the culture in the Americas and Britain
became one of unenlightened and drunken people. Before rum, all that most Europeans had to drink
was disease ridden water and beer. Rum was a happy medium between the two drinks. Rum had more
alcohol content than beer, and had more flavor than water, so it pleased the masses greatly. However,
since Rum did have a higher alcohol content, it left the population in a

Outcome Devaluation Model
Experimental paradigm Outcome devaluation experimental paradigm is now widely used and a core
model to understand the instrumental behaviour in animal and humans. So, behavioural scientists
using outcome devaluation model to differentiate the manipulations of the environmental learning
effects on animals or human action behaviour and exploration whether it is habitual behaviour or goal
directed behaviour. As they use training schedule, choice, and Pavlovian influences to produce
insensitivity or sensitivity to outcome devaluation, and they can explore which areas in the brain are
important in the process and involvement in habitual behaviour or goal behaviour. The devaluation
outcome model is a good model in determining the cognitive architecture by testing the effect of an

their response even for the devalued pellets (Balleine O doherty, 2010). In addition to that the

Pills And Starships
Book Report: Pills and Starships by Lydia Millet Summary Pills and Starships, an intriguing novel by
Lydia Millet, shows a vividly imagined dystopian future in which the world is consumed in despair
and the unsustainable population is controlled by the government. Lydia Millet does a brilliant job in
fabricating a post apocalyptic, sinister form of Earth that s enveloped in toxic gas due to excessive
pollution and climate change. Migrations of whole cities of people to escape bad air quality are
constant, food and water are scarce, and people are forced to take pills to stabilize their emotions.
Many oppressive limitations are placed upon the remaining people by the government and
corporations, who forbid having children and even limit your right to take your own life or die. The
main characters, Nat and Sam, live in this horrific world. Their parents experienced the beauty of
Earth before global warming led to its deterioration, and being old, they couldn t bear the pain and
depression of such a drastic transition anymore. As a result, they purchased a death contract ... Show

In terms of pills , it refers to the mood pharms in the story, which are drugs that corporations distribute
to stabilize the emotions of the general population to avoid chaos and conflict. These mood pharms are
taken by Nat, Sam, and their parents one week before their death, allowing them to remain calm even
in agitating situations. Starships are not directly referenced in the book, but I m assuming that it
actually refers to me, the reader. This is very fascinating because as Nat writes in her journal, she
refers to the reader an astronaut who floats in space and observes their deteriorating planet from a
spaceship. As previously stated, Lydia Millet is a very creative author with and I m stunned at how she
managed to incorporate the reader into the story with such a vivid

At Indiana University there are unwritten customs that many student choose to follow. The unwritten
custom can be divided into two approaches Socio Cultural approach and Academic Institutional
approach, but both can be intertwined together in varies ways. The Socio Cultural approach relates
back to Indiana University in many way. The main unwritten custom of Indiana University is partying

43617760. There Are Many Ways That Groups Of People Allocate
43617760 There are many ways that groups of people allocate goods. The most common way to do
this in modern culture is through a market. Markets, as Carruthers and Babb describe it in chapter 1,
are the particular supply and demand of any given good or service that are exchanged for a value of
money with certain given information. As Wright and Best describe in chapter 3, this way of
organizing an economy allows for an effective way to step up an economy. Additionally, it gives the
maximum freedom to buy and sell as one pleases. Such markets can take place in any number of
forms and are influenced by society s expectations, religious practices, politics, our relationships with
those around us, and many other ways. As was noted in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether through their spending policies, taxing policies or lack there of, or days that are considered
holidays the state has great influence. These can sometimes can be seen as a harmful set of actions, but
as Bandelj and Sowers point out in chapter one these acts by the state have a real importance to how
the economy works. The state as noted above takes an important role in managing things that are not
natural. Without the government to regulate these things we not be able to sustain these now vital and
constructive institutions. This state interference in the market, good or bad, has a profound effect on
parts that ripple into the whole of the market. This relationship in the market is on grand scale, but the
social institutional relationship does not always have to be.
The relationships that we have with particular people also greatly affect how we interact with the
market. Particularly in regards to cultural and societal expectations. When someone goes to college
they are expected to get a MacBook for school from their family as a parting gift. When someone gets
a big promotion they buy a new car or sometimes even a new house to show as a visible
announcement that they have improved their life. Society expects, as one improves their status, to
improve their possessions and interact with the market in more significant ways. Sometimes though
we can be influenced to

Cobain s first suicidal attempt in 1992 was thought to be a mistake, until his three page suicide note

two men in his family committed suicide when Cobain was a child (Freeman, 2012). Although Cobain
didn t necessarily have five of the nine symptoms to diagnose him with Major Depressive Disorder, it
is not hard to see that he was a very depressed soul (Kurt Cobain and his battle with Mental Illness,
2014). Many factors play a part in his depression many that began at the age of seven. Tragically,
Cobain was not able to overcome his mental illnesses and live on to complete his legacy. I believe that
Cobain had been suicidal from the time he was a young boy. His childhood pushed him into his
depression at such a young age and only worsened as time went on. Although, Cobain was an
extremely gifted human being, who brought himself so much fame, it was not enough for him to feel
the need to keep living. He was a very sensitive man, who felt emotion so deeply that the slightest
negative thing could send him over the edge. Cobain stated in his suicide note There s good in all

NOT WAVING BUT DROWNING
BY STEVIE SMITH
The poem Not Waving But Drowning , by Stevie Smith, is a poem in which there is a drowning man
at sea. In this poem, the poet is talking about the difficulty of communication and the fundamental
isolation of the individual in modern society. The title of the poem gives us an immediate indication
that the poem will tackle a serious matter. The poem contains three voices; the drowning man, the
observers and the people on the beach. It can be interpreted on both a literal and metaphorical level of
meaning.

The pause after gave way , followed by the last line They said , indicates that other interpretations are
possible which really reflects what happened: that the man found life as too lonely or difficult and
gave up.
The observers completely misinterpret the situation. The people on the beach are unable to discern the
man s moments of joy from his moments of despair. We can interpret the phrase It must have been too
cold for him his heart gave way , in both a literal and figurative way. Literally, the observers could be
saying that the man has had a heart attack as a result of the cold temperature of the water; figuratively,
we might say that this unknown man lacked the warmth of human relationships. His life was empty of
love and warm feelings which has caused him to give up on life.
The third and final stanza shows us how desperate the man s situation has been, both past and present.
The repetition of no stresses this fact by underlining how he has always felt cold, unloved,
unappreciated and misunderstood. In fact he says I was much too far out all my life . The water in
which he drowns, symbolizes a barrier which separates him from the rest of society, such as his
inability to make friends. It could also symbolize his life, a life in which he could not cope due to the
various difficulties he was experiencing.
The poem s apparent simplicity concerns serious issues which preoccupied the poet, Stevie

Stereotypes Of Dinosaurs
Through excavating in bone beds it has become apparent that dinosaurs were more than singular
animals and followed patterns displayed by many current animal groups when concerning family.
Dinosaurs had ranks within their herds and there where often struggles of territoriality, social
dominance, court ship, and feeding (Tanke Currie, 1998, pg. 181. These insights have been gained
from light tooth scars around the snout and on top of the skulls of many dinosaurs. While family units
where common among herbivores, theropods also had herds, though they where often smaller in size.
Among herbivores herding was often a means of protection for both adults but also young and un

What were the political implications of the medium? Use examples to support your essay.
Landscape painting was a particularly effective vehicle for allegory because it allowed artists to make
fictional subjects appear normal, conditioned, acceptable, or destined. Art was not just about the
landscape, it actually allowed the spirit of the painter to come alive in their work. The allegory was for
moral and spiritual concerns. The introduction to photography therefore impacted 19th century

Analysis Of Slumdog Millionaire
Rising from the slums to become a millionaire is one in a million chance. Yet, Jamal, the main
character of Slumdog Millionaire, has raised his life from living in the slums to living the life a
millionaire. With their mother dying, Jamal and his brother started off in the slums living off trash and
garbage. From experience, Jamal was able to recall certain events and situations to help him answer
certain question on the Who wants to be a millionaire show. For example, Jamal was able to answer
the question, What does God Rama hold in his right hand? , by simply remembering the time after his
mother was killed and him and his brother, Salim, were being chased. (Thesis) Not only did the plot of
the movie made the movie interesting and amazing to watch, but the acting, aging through camera
transitions, and overall goal of Jamal to find Latika throughout conflicts made Slumdog Millionaire a
amazing movie.
The acting of Slumdog Millionaire seemed to be integrated into the environment and the setting of the
slums. With the use of real children from the slums, the movie seems to be very real as the children
seem to already fit the descriptions of being part of the slums. Living in India, I was able to
understand the conditions and lives of the people that lived around the slums. These people are
recognized by the majority of the public as being savages and uncivilized. The child actors that played
Jamal and Salim in the movie fit the description of being savages and uncivilized. For example, Jamal
jumped into the pile of poop from the outdoor bathroom to get to Amitabh Bachchan to get his
autograph. And as for Salim, Salim fit the description of being uncivilized due to the fact he had no
regards for other people s lives. A perfect example is when Salim was in charge of all the other
children in the child slave ring, Salim at one point took away a baby from another girl to give it to
Latika. In this scene, Latika didn t want to hold the baby but had to hold the baby because Salim
threaten to drop it. Overall, the acting of Slumdog Millionaire was amazing because of many reasons.
Reasons including the fact that the actors that played Jamal, Salim, and Latika were real children from
the slums of India which means

Argumentative Essay On Beauty Pageants
In 1854 instead of judging woman or young girls on their looks, Phineas Taylor Barnum began
judging animals on their looks, this was the first beauty pageant. The first swimsuit competition was
held in 1880 at a festival to bring business however, it soon became a summer tradition . Women from
all around the world became interested in them, wanting to be seen as the perfect woman. Currently,
there are 3 different types of beauty pageants, a glitz pageant consists of the contestants wearing heavy
makeup, crystal decorated clothes and wearing slip on veneers. Another type of pageant is named a
semi glitz pageant which is very similar to the glitz pageant , except contestants are not allowed to
wear any hair pieces or slip on veneers. The third type of pageant is referred to as the natural pageant ,
contestants are permitted to wear natural makeup and will be disqualified if any hair piece or slip on
veneers are worn. Each of these different pageants are taken very seriously by its contestants with the
goal in mind of winning the crown. Many contestants will often make drastic or permanent changes,
forced by their guardian or parent(s) if they think they have a better chance of winning. Beauty
pageants exist only to judge girls based on their looks, which can be extremely damaging, both
physically and emotionally, therefore beauty pageants should be prohibited around the world to help
end the constant discrimination and unreal expectations of women and young girls.

Maugham, a British playwright from the 19th century. Vincent Van Gogh, an artist who is considered
by many one of the most inspirational artists in history, was no stranger to depicting his struggles in
life or feelings in his work. Van Gogh s piece Starry Night, designed in the year 1889, shows this to be
true in that it was the result of his experiences in an asylum that encouraged this piece. Despite this
work has being so well known, many critics and observers of the piece have differing views on what
he was trying to communicate through it. Two prime examples of this can be seen by the views
expressed in the poems entitled, Vincent and The Starry Night , written by Don McClean and Anne
Sexton, respectively. While the poem Vincent , has a depressing tone to it, The Starry Night , by Anne
Sexton, depicts Starry Night as having a more lively mood, which more accurately represents that of
the painting, by Vincent Van Gogh.
Within the poem Vincent , written by Don McClean, a sense of a depressing mood is created through
the use of dark diction, detail and figurative language. Throughout his poem, McClean expresses some
of his thoughts, on Starry Night, by incorporating words like, no hope as well as suffering . Along
with this, at one point in the poem he says, the silver thorn of bloody rose lie crushed and broken on
the virgin snow . With the use of these words,

Role Of Rick Blaine In Casablanca
The movie, Casablanca, directed by Michael Curtiz is a story within a story. In order for one to truly
appreciate the greatness of the film, one has to look beyond what meets the eye. By doing so, one can
identify the importance of the character, Rick Blaine. While Rick Blaine is the main character and
protagonist in the film, the true importance of his role can only be identified by looking at his
character s development. Throughout the course of the film, Casablanca, the character Rick Blaine
goes through a series of character developments.
In the opening of the film, Casablanca, the main character Rick Blaine is introduced. Upon
introduction, one can easily see that Blaine is a very harsh, cynical man who pushes women away
despite the fact that they are all over him. Blaine is the owner of a nightclub, and he often chooses to
isolate himself from customers. Not only does he stay in insolation, but he also refuses to ... Show

This new Blaine is what he was like in the past. Therefore, one is sent back in history. Once back in
history, Blaine is a very romantic and compassionate man. He was deeply in love with Ilsa. The film
later identifies that, Rick Blaine was on the anti fascism campaign in Paris, and he was blacklisted as a
result of his involvement. When the Nazis were invading Paris, he had to escape from Paris in order to
avoid persecution. He was planning on Ilsa escaping with him, but she never showed up at the train
station. This new revelation revealed what caused such a drastic change in Blaine. When Ilsa left him,
he felt like he is insides have been kicked out (Casablanca). This abandonment caused Blaine to
drastically change. He went from being a compassionate, romantic man to a harsh, cynical one. Blaine
also probably changed from being on the anti fascism campaign to being apolitical because he felt like
his campaign is what made him lose Ilsa, the love of his

The Taxi Driver By Thomas L. Friedman
Hey everybody, Due to your positive responses to my last blog post regarding modern technology I m
going to share some more thoughts on this topic with you today. To begin with, moden technology
both unites and divides us, according to Thomas L. Friedman, whose article The Taxi Driver clearly
represents the effects of today s electronical devices on our lives. Sometimes even though we are
physically close to a person, it often feels like there is a great distance because of distractions caused
by devices such as smartphones, iPods, laptops, etc. Therefore, we often miss the chance to get to
know foreign or extraordinary personalities, as Friedman for instance relates in his article. In general,

We Must Save the Great White Shark from Extinction
The Great White Shark, immortalized by the Hollywood film Jaws, is at the midst of an international
controversy. The shark, despite its notoriety, is in danger of extinction. A conflict over the fate of these
sharks has existed for decades, but with recent attacks the debate has come to the forefront. The
environmental conflict over the Great White Shark has yet to reach a conclusion, as many factors exist
that hinder resolution possibilities. The purpose of this paper is to provide background information on

According to the World Wildlife Fund (2001), jaws are sold for between $15,000 $50,000 and teeth
for up to $600 per tooth.
Initial legislation on the protection of Great White Sharks was enacted in South Africa in 1992. Since
then, a few countries and states including Namibia, the Maldives, Australia, Florida, and California
have instituted legislation to protect these creatures (Stevens and Bruce, 1999, http). With reported
declines in their populations, the International Union for Conservation of Nature first listed the sharks
on the endangered species list in 1996. The first legislation in the United States that greatly limited the
number of sharks that can be taken from U.S. waters by commercial and sport fishermen came in
1993. In this legislation, the Great White Shark was declared off limits to commercial harvest (Paige,
2001, http). In 2000, Bill Clinton signed the Shark Finning Prohibition Act that bans shark finning in
all U.S. Waters. In addition, the act provides that negotiations to prohibit such practices be initiated
internationally (Shark Finning Prohibited in US Waters, 2001, http). The most recent fight for the
protection of the Great White occurred at the United Nations Convention on International Trade in

Food companies do best on Instagram because their customers become appetized after seeing pictures
of appealing food. Mike could post pictures of fresh made fudge and candy to entice people to stop by.

The Literary Style Of Cavendish s The Blazing World
In the epilogue of The Blazing World, Cavendish puts forth that anyone who does not wish to be a
subject of her world can instead create their own (Cavendish 163), but how does one do this? In the
story, the Empress asserts that in order to create a world one must frame it, strengthen it, and beautify
it (126). The literary world that she creates in The Blazing World itself follows this system as her use
of structured lists, her descriptions of the strength of her society and her use of poetic techniques in
prose each support these ideas. This principal of world creation can be seen not only throughout The
Blazing World, but through her poetry as well. In her poem Of Many Worlds in This World, Cavendish
is able to convey these three rules of world building through both form and content while creating a
whole system of worlds for the reader to imagine. The passage of The Blazing World that this essay
will focus on is a passage in which the Duchess convinces the Empress to make a world in her mind
which the Empress decides not to dissolve. The passage ends with the Empress desiring to see the
Duchess s world and it s government and society. This passage not only creates a world within the
text, a world filled with creatures, laws, arts and sciences (126), but adds to the greater world of the
story that Cavendish creates. In this passage one can see a bit of how Cavendish creates her world
through both the content of the passage and form. This passage exhibits the framing

Eisenstein s Use Of Continuity Editing In The Conversation
Within The Conversation the use of continuity editing is seen through the use of shots often being cut
away from Stan to Harry even though Stan would still be speaking, this is used to signify that Harry s
private space is being invaded by Stan and his curious nature. This invasion of space is again
reinforced by the many shots which have Harry facing away from Stan, which is a connotation of
Harry avoiding communication with Stan, this also signifies Harry s secluded nature . Costanzo states
In film the objective of continuity editing is to create the illusion that the movie is not made up of a
series of short, separate shots, but that it is, instead, one on going, unsliced (seamless) whole. This

To An Athlete Dying Young
It is known for a fact that the clutches of death are inescapable and permanent, however death may
sometimes fall short when it comes to the life of an idea or memory as these can live on forever. In A.
E. Housman s poem To an Athlete Dying Young , it is the memory of a brilliant athlete that will be
lauded for many generations to come. A. E. Housman achieves the somber and reverent memory of
the young athlete, who had met their untimely demise, by the use of strong characterization, poetic
devices, and themes.
Characterization in this poem truly helps the reader understand what the town had lost and how the
townspeople, including the speaker, feel about the young athlete s passing. In relation to the athlete,
the speaker is one who has had some first hand experience watching the athlete perform and even
celebrating the athlete as Housman writes, We chaired you through the market place (l.2). The reader
is also able to see the speaker as a sympathetic and realistic character. The speaker s sympathy is best
seen at the mention of bringing the young athlete to their final resting place. The realistic nature of the
speaker is seen throughout the poem, especially when Housman wrote, smart lad to slip betimes away

This is exemplified when Offred hears Aunt Lydia say, Ordinary is what you are used to. This may not
seem ordinary to you now, but after a time it will. It will become ordinary (Atwood 33). The repetition
of ordinary is used to reinforce how harsh realities (e.g. public execution) are perceived and justified
as normal by the citizens of Gilead; however, in Offred s previous life, she would have been repulsed
to see a public hanging of an innocent person. With Aunt Lydia s presence and words casting a shadow
in Offred s mind, she begins to have a sense of normalcy about life in Gilead. The Aunt Lydia s words
are so powerful and influential that Offred begins to transform her way of thinking, which mirrors the
lack of individuality that she displays. Not only can Offred not think for herself, but her vision is also
controlled by Gilead. For instance, Offred and other handmaids must wear white wings, which are a
headdress to restrict their vision. This is shown when Atwood writes, There remains a mirror, on the

Air Vice Marshal Francis Hubert
Air Vice Marshal Francis Hubert (Frank) McNamara Medals and Awards On March of 1917, the allies
had planned an attack on Gaza and they had subjected repeated attacks on Junction Station, an
important Turkish supply centre, to be carried out by No. 1 Squadron, and No. 14 Squadron, R.F.C.
During the attacks on 20th of March, an aircraft piloted by Captain D. from No. 1 Squadron, was
forced to land due to being hit by ground fire. Despite the aircraft being a two seater, he had been
flying the aircraft by himself. A great group of enemy on horses were close by and when they saw the
aircraft, they began to gallop towards it. At that time, McNamara was on his way home. He had been
on the same raid that day, and was severely wounded after being confronted by anti aircraft fire,
despite his circumstances, McNamara decided to attempt a rescue on Captain D. Rutherford. He
managed to make a safe landing beside the pilot, and the pilot climbed aboard McNamara s aircraft,
which was a single seater. Therefore, the pilot could only stand on the wing and hold on to the struts,
this made the aircraft very lop sided, and dragged the aircraft to one side. Due to this and his leg
wound, McNamara could no longer control the aircraft, so the aircraft crashed while attempting to
take off. Although, crashing, the two remained as they had been, and they set fire to the aircraft and
decided to return to the pilot s aircraft. Pilot Rutherford s aircraft was close to being captured by the

Delinquency In The 1950 s
Media Turns the U.S.A Upsidedown
As World War II came to a close and national aggression simmered down, the streets of the U.S. ran
rampant with the pesky youth of the 1950s. Whose fault was this? Blame could be placed on the
mandatory attendance at schools, or the lack of stay at home mothers, but the main culprit was the
media. From the graphic images projected in movies, and the harsh language found in popular songs
and intimate dances, to the new comic book series that were being printed off, media was the new tool
that was molding the minds of America especially the youth. The rise of juvenile delinquency in the
1950 s was caused by the unceasing presence of media or peer culture .
Movies and TV shows were growing faster now after WWII since TV s were becoming more
affordable and people had more leisure time. Many popular movies in the 1950s had content that was
not appropriate for the youth of the day, but were still viewed by people under the age of 18. Films
included; High School Confidential! , Blackboard Jungle , and So Young So Bad . The Film High
School Confidential! stars a tough kid coming into a new high school who conformed to the typical
stoner persona. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Jitterbug, Lindy, Boogie Woogie, and the Bop were all popular dances that went to the new songs.
These dance moves and the music that went along with it were very inappropriate at the time for
younger audiences to be doing in the 50s. A major celebrity who drove crowds crazy was Elvis
Presley. Many of Elvis s dance moves were too inappropriate to even be broadcasted on the television.
They would still end up being viewed by those who were too young to see them. With so many new
ways of accessing media it was impossible for children not to find these controversial dances and

Feminism in Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter Essay
Written in 1850, The Scarlet Letter stood as a very progressive book. With new ideas about women,
main characters stories intertwined, and many different themes, The Scarlet Letter remains today as a
extremely popular novel about 17th century Boston, Massachusetts. Not only was the 19th century a
time for the abolition of slavery movement but it was also the beginning of the first wave of feminism.
Women such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Lucretia Mott catalyzed the women s
rights movement. These prominent women believed that a woman s role was no longer in the house
and that women should be afforded the same opportunity as men. Nathaniel Hawthorne s sympathy
for women is evident in a feminist reading of his novel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wilson s question, a question testing Pearl s religious knowledge and belief in god, exemplified her
courage. An outspoken character, Pearl was beyond her age in knowledge as well as many other
aspects. The fact that Hawthorne created this girl as an unyielding character illustrates his support for
the feminist cause. Yet another time Pearl s aptitude surfaced was the warning to her mother. Come
away, mother! Come away, or yonder old Black Man will catch you! He hath got hold of the minister
already. (Hawthorne 123) This realization Pearl possessed between good and bad coupled with her
intellect allows for her empowerment. Moreover, Pearl s role as a strong, prominent character showed
19th century Americans an alternative side young girls could possess. While Puritan women are weak
and dependent upon their husbands, Hester Prynne is empowered and self reliant. A character
designed by Hawthorne to show 19th century women that women s work could be valuable, Hester
supports herself and her daughter by needlework. For, as the novel unfolds, the letter, intended by the
Authorities to signify harsh but just condemnation, is made by Hester to signify something entirely
different able, admirable. (Bell 109) All aspects considered, the ability of Hester, a woman who
committed sin and was publicly punished for this crime, to manipulate this punishment into a virtue

Gwendolyn Brooks s The Mother
Gwendolyn Brooks is a famous, African American poetess who is famous for making a social
commentary upon the urban society in which she lives. Clearly seen in three of her more popular
poems, the mother , a song in the front yard , and What shall I give my children? Who are poor? ,
Brooks uses the struggles of impoverished motherhood to comment on the stymied lives of adult black
women. This is obviously evident in her use of the tone of hopelessness, which transcends all three
poems in differing forms that stem from regret in the mother , worry and overprotectiveness in a song
in the front yard and frustration of lacking the necessities for children in What shall I give my
children? Who are poor In her works, Brooks is known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tone of hopelessness in this poem is very obviously the result of regret, or the feelings of what
motherhood may have been. For a majority of the poem the mother focuses on what their lives would
have been having never giggled or planned or cried (4) or how they will never wind up the sucking
thumb (4). Although these are only a few examples it is very evident how the mother, although denied
the joy of motherhood, longs for the child she almost had, saying, believe me, I knew you, though
faintly, and I loved, I loved you/ All (5). In an attempt to take a more positive outlook on the mother
tries to justify herself saying how much better the child s life would be, that as a mother she would
never have the chance to neglect or beat/ Them... (4). The story behind the mother is just one example
of hopelessness that Brooks prominently saw throughout her community, obviously this feeling of
regret and lament was prevalent throughout many women who, although chose to have abortions,
were not done out of not wanting the child, but by force in order to keep a job, house, or some other
commitment in which carrying and properly raising a child would be near impossible. Another very
powerful version of the overall tone of hopelessness in Brooks plays is the feeling of hopelessness that
stems from a mother s worry

Engstrom Mirror Plant
Milestone 2 Engstrom Auto Mirror Plant: Root Cause Case Study Analysis Sharon McClain SNHU
The Engstrom Auto Mirror plant is located in Richmond, Indiana and employs around 200 or more
people. The plant has been going through some changes over the last few years and has seen a decline
in employee motivation. The focus today will be to determine some of the root causes of the problems
facing the plant from an organizational view and a human behavior issue. The bottom line is
determining how to solve the issues the company is facing and move forward. Some of the questions
that will need to be answered is, why is motivation at an all time low, is the Scanlon plan benefiting
everyone in the company and can the plan be revamped with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Many employees felt they were doing all of the work and should get the bonuses, not management.
This plan led to the employees feeling as though they were not treated fairly because of the many rate
changes. The employees did not have input into the plan and felt management was playing games with
the formula. Most of us like to be valued as an employee and a person. This plan did not allow the
employees to feel this way. As the morale dropped, so did production and from there, the bonuses
dwindled. Instead of looking at themselves for the lack of bonuses, they blamed management. Their
lack of understanding on the rate changes did not help the process. According to Maslow s Hierarchy,
the employees needs were not met and frustration created tension, which created low to no production.
The company faced major decisions and needed this situation to be resolved quickly. The managers
faced a crisis and needed a solution before the plant was forced to close its doors and have to lay off
the employees. The Scanlon plan created problems within the company and questions had to be
formulated and put into place to be addressed before any major decisions could be made. Although the
Scanlon plan was a good plan, it was not a one size fits all plan. Changes needed to be made and what
type of changes had to be addressed. Some of the other difficulties facing the company was, no

Cell Phone While Driving
Cell phone usage while driving is a major source of distraction that could potentially lead to accidents
and consequently cause injury or loss of life. Technology has had a way of dealing with distractions by
coming up with hands free cell phones mounted on the dashboards of most vehicles. But, even so, cell
phones are still a source of distraction when driving regardless of the fact that they are hand held or
not. Therefore, even the choice for authorities to come up with handheld bans still that does not
achieve safety because the brain, the central organ is still distracted. The thesis statement of this
persuasive essay is that cell phone usage while driving has a negative impact on the overall road users
as they compromise safety. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Saving lives is the number one motive of avoiding using mobile phones while driving. Research
indicates that people are more likely to get involved in an accident, which could potentially lead to
death if the act of multitasking, in this case driving and texting is in progress. For instance, in a study
that was carried out in a higher institution of learning in a time frame of about 18 months, university
students that were making use of a complex driving simulator came up with the conclusion that people
who use mobile phones when driving are eight times more likely to encounter a car crash than those
who do not (Park, 2017). Other research studies show that about 36 percent of young people have
been involved in an almost crash scenario because they or someone close to them was using a cell
phone while driving. Mobile phone usage while driving should not be allowed under any
circumstances. Despite the fact that there are many reasons why people should not use their mobile
phones when driving, it is normally very hard to do so. Additionally, there is a misunderstanding
amongst the authorities and in this case the law makers on the definition of distractions caused by
mobile phones. That is why one group thinks that mobile phone users should be banned completely
regardless of the fact that the users are using hand held or hands free phones. Another group thinks
that cell phones are not a distraction and hence the ban should be specific, i.e. so long as

  • 2. My Family s Slave, By Alex Tizon What would you do if your family had a woman working for them throughout your whole life? What about when you watch her get mistreated and find her sleeping in corners, watching her teeth rot, exhausted all the time and working as a mother and servant without pay?Would you defend her? Alex Tizon did. In My Family s Slave , Alex Tizon tells a story about a woman named Lola who became a great part of his life. After understanding what Lola was as a young boy and watched how she was treated, the author reveals how as he grew older he tries to enhance Lola s life. He confesses that by the time he starts to give her a taste of freedom she is 75 years old and cannot do much. But throughout those eleven free years, he tries to make up for everything. Lola or Eudocia Tomas Pulido, her real name, is enslaved at 18 years old to Tizon s mother as a gift when she is a child. In the second paragraph, the author starts off saying, she was 4 foot 11, with mocha brown skin and almond eyes that I can still see looking into mine (21). He chooses this to describe Lola and his first memory of her to show the kind love he has for her. Soon after, Tizon goes into the unfortunate memories he carries, Her days began before everyone else woke and ended after we went to bed. She prepared three meals a day, cleaned the house, waited on my parents, and took care of my four siblings and me. My parents never paid her, and they scolded her constantly. It takes time for the adolescent to adjust to the loss of a parent in a household. Adolescents will experience their custodial parent being unavailable, which makes the adolescent feel like they have no parental support. Also, they will deal with stress not only from the divorce but from remarrying. The adolescent who has a relationship with a non parental adult, friends, or an attachment to school may counterpoise a stressful environment. Researchers found that girls are more likely to confide in friends about their situation at home. Boys tend to spend time with their friends without sharing what is on their mind, or spend time by themselves. Building a relationship with others as such as neighbors will increase the chance of the adolescent not having a negative outcome. Adolescents in divorced or blended families will be more likely to experience negative outcomes, because of the lack of parental support (Rodgers Rose, 2002). Additionally, in a speech by the former senator of Indiana, Albert J. Beveridge, America s economic reasons for becoming involved in the Spanish American war are portrayed. • 6. Systematic Review Paper Abstract Traditionally, systematic reviews (SR) are descriptive secondary research, which may or may not be accompanied by statistical methods (metaanalysis) of pooling the results of primary, quantitative studies to answer a clinical question or test a hypothesis (Chalmers 1996). Similarly, qualitative primary studies can be pooled and synthesised in order to develop new theories to aid decision making, re shape policies, and influence professional practices. Over the past 20 years, patient and public involvement (PPI) in research have become increasingly crucial, which has fuelled the increasing popularity of qualitative research as better ways of incorporating public and patient views into health, social and economic policies. There is however a confusing array of methods available for conducting secondary qualitative research. In this paper epistemological concepts guiding a number of methods are discussed. The consensus on enhancing transparency in reporting the synthesis of qualitative research (ENTREQ) is also reviewed Introduction Synthesis of qualitative data has never been as popular as meta analysis. It is however becoming an increasingly useful secondary research tool in a diverse area of problem solutions, ranging from leadership and management problems (Walsh 2005; Galuska 2012), sociology (Wilder 2014) to clinical research questions (Beck 2002; Kennedy et al. 2003 and Orri 2014). • 7. Coffee, Tea, And Tea The history of the world can be viewed through six drinks, beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and Coca Cola, as told in the book A History of the World in Six Glasses by Tom Standage. However, focusing on three drinks in particular, rum, coffee, and tea, an enormous story can be told. Those three drinks impacted the world in many ways, especially the cultures that consumed or traded them. In order to produce Rum, many Africans were brought to the Americas to work in servitude. This caused a culture shift, because now you had two very different cultures working closely together, but one was considered superior to the other. Coffee sparked the emergence of enlightened thinkers, whose conversations and writings profoundly shaped European culture. Tea helped Britain retain the colossal empire they are often credited with. This is because of a secondary effect of tea as it helped to create the British Empire, which in turn impacted the world colossally. Coffee, tea, and rum catapulted the world into major cultural shifts. During the 17th and 18th centuries when rum was introduced the culture in the Americas and Britain became one of unenlightened and drunken people. Before rum, all that most Europeans had to drink was disease ridden water and beer. Rum was a happy medium between the two drinks. Rum had more alcohol content than beer, and had more flavor than water, so it pleased the masses greatly. However, since Rum did have a higher alcohol content, it left the population in a ... Pills And Starships Book Report: Pills and Starships by Lydia Millet Summary Pills and Starships, an intriguing novel by Lydia Millet, shows a vividly imagined dystopian future in which the world is consumed in despair and the unsustainable population is controlled by the government. Migrations of whole cities of people to escape bad air quality are constant, food and water are scarce, and people are forced to take pills to stabilize their emotions. Many oppressive limitations are placed upon the remaining people by the government and corporations, who forbid having children and even limit your right to take your own life or die. The most common way to do this in modern culture is through a market. Markets, as Carruthers and Babb describe it in chapter 1, are the particular supply and demand of any given good or service that are exchanged for a value of money with certain given information. As Wright and Best describe in chapter 3, this way of organizing an economy allows for an effective way to step up an economy. The state as noted above takes an important role in managing things that are not natural. Without the government to regulate these things we not be able to sustain these now vital and constructive institutions. This state interference in the market, good or bad, has a profound effect on parts that ripple into the whole of the market. This relationship in the market is on grand scale, but the social institutional relationship does not always have to be. The relationships that we have with particular people also greatly affect how we interact with the market. Particularly in regards to cultural and societal expectations. When someone goes to college they are expected to get a MacBook for school from their family as a parting gift. When someone gets a big promotion they buy a new car or sometimes even a new house to show as a visible announcement that they have improved their life. In this poem, the poet is talking about the difficulty of communication and the fundamental isolation of the individual in modern society. The title of the poem gives us an immediate indication that the poem will tackle a serious matter. The poem contains three voices; the drowning man, the observers and the people on the beach. The observers completely misinterpret the situation. The people on the beach are unable to discern the man s moments of joy from his moments of despair. We can interpret the phrase It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way , in both a literal and figurative way. Literally, the observers could be saying that the man has had a heart attack as a result of the cold temperature of the water; figuratively, we might say that this unknown man lacked the warmth of human relationships. His life was empty of love and warm feelings which has caused him to give up on life. The third and final stanza shows us how desperate the man s situation has been, both past and present. The repetition of no stresses this fact by underlining how he has always felt cold, unloved, unappreciated and misunderstood. In fact he says I was much too far out all my life . The water in which he drowns, symbolizes a barrier which separates him from the rest of society, such as his inability to make friends. It could also symbolize his life, a life in which he could not cope due to the various difficulties he was experiencing. Art was not just about the landscape, it actually allowed the spirit of the painter to come alive in their work. The allegory was for moral and spiritual concerns. Yet, Jamal, the main character of Slumdog Millionaire, has raised his life from living in the slums to living the life a millionaire. With their mother dying, Jamal and his brother started off in the slums living off trash and garbage. From experience, Jamal was able to recall certain events and situations to help him answer certain question on the Who wants to be a millionaire show. For example, Jamal was able to answer the question, What does God Rama hold in his right hand? , by simply remembering the time after his mother was killed and him and his brother, Salim, were being chased. (Thesis) Not only did the plot of the movie made the movie interesting and amazing to watch, but the acting, aging through camera transitions, and overall goal of Jamal to find Latika throughout conflicts made Slumdog Millionaire a amazing movie. The acting of Slumdog Millionaire seemed to be integrated into the environment and the setting of the slums. With the use of real children from the slums, the movie seems to be very real as the children seem to already fit the descriptions of being part of the slums. Living in India, I was able to understand the conditions and lives of the people that lived around the slums. These people are recognized by the majority of the public as being savages and uncivilized. The child actors that played Jamal and Salim in the movie fit the description of being savages and uncivilized. For example, Jamal jumped into the pile of poop from the outdoor bathroom to get to Amitabh Bachchan to get his autograph. And as for Salim, Salim fit the description of being uncivilized due to the fact he had no regards for other people s lives. A perfect example is when Salim was in charge of all the other children in the child slave ring, Salim at one point took away a baby from another girl to give it to Latika. In this scene, Latika didn t want to hold the baby but had to hold the baby because Salim threaten to drop it. Overall, the acting of Slumdog Millionaire was amazing because of many reasons. Argumentative Essay On Beauty Pageants In 1854 instead of judging woman or young girls on their looks, Phineas Taylor Barnum began judging animals on their looks, this was the first beauty pageant. The first swimsuit competition was held in 1880 at a festival to bring business however, it soon became a summer tradition . Women from all around the world became interested in them, wanting to be seen as the perfect woman. Currently, there are 3 different types of beauty pageants, a glitz pageant consists of the contestants wearing heavy makeup, crystal decorated clothes and wearing slip on veneers. Another type of pageant is named a semi glitz pageant which is very similar to the glitz pageant , except contestants are not allowed to wear any hair pieces or slip on veneers. The third type of pageant is referred to as the natural pageant , contestants are permitted to wear natural makeup and will be disqualified if any hair piece or slip on veneers are worn. Each of these different pageants are taken very seriously by its contestants with the goal in mind of winning the crown. Many contestants will often make drastic or permanent changes, forced by their guardian or parent(s) if they think they have a better chance of winning. • 21. Analysis Of The Poem Starry Night Every production of an artist should be the expression of an adventure of his soul, said William Maugham, a British playwright from the 19th century. Vincent Van Gogh, an artist who is considered by many one of the most inspirational artists in history, was no stranger to depicting his struggles in life or feelings in his work. Van Gogh s piece Starry Night, designed in the year 1889, shows this to be true in that it was the result of his experiences in an asylum that encouraged this piece. Despite this work has being so well known, many critics and observers of the piece have differing views on what he was trying to communicate through it. Two prime examples of this can be seen by the views expressed in the poems entitled, Vincent and The Starry Night , written by Don McClean and Anne Sexton, respectively. While the poem Vincent , has a depressing tone to it, The Starry Night , by Anne Sexton, depicts Starry Night as having a more lively mood, which more accurately represents that of the painting, by Vincent Van Gogh. Within the poem Vincent , written by Don McClean, a sense of a depressing mood is created through the use of dark diction, detail and figurative language. Throughout his poem, McClean expresses some of his thoughts, on Starry Night, by incorporating words like, no hope as well as suffering . In the story, the Empress asserts that in order to create a world one must frame it, strengthen it, and beautify it (126). The literary world that she creates in The Blazing World itself follows this system as her use of structured lists, her descriptions of the strength of her society and her use of poetic techniques in prose each support these ideas. This principal of world creation can be seen not only throughout The Blazing World, but through her poetry as well. In her poem Of Many Worlds in This World, Cavendish is able to convey these three rules of world building through both form and content while creating a whole system of worlds for the reader to imagine. The passage of The Blazing World that this essay will focus on is a passage in which the Duchess convinces the Empress to make a world in her mind which the Empress decides not to dissolve. The passage ends with the Empress desiring to see the Duchess s world and it s government and society. This passage not only creates a world within the text, a world filled with creatures, laws, arts and sciences (126), but adds to the greater world of the story that Cavendish creates. Literary Analysis of the Handmaids Tale Erica Clark Professor Kachman WR 121 20 February 2013 Adverse Effects of Oppressive Dystopias A genuine identity and individuality is not possible in an oppressive environment especially when one s daily life, actions, and thoughts are dictated by domineering societal expectations. Oppressive environments such as regimes controlled by a dictatorship and that run off a totalitarian government system strip an individual of their civil rights as a human being in order to gain ultimate control over its citizens. A government such as the Republic of Gilead in Margaret Atwood s work, The Handmaid s Tale, controls their citizen s lives to the extent to where they must learn to suppress their emotions and feelings. In the Republic of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is exemplified when Offred hears Aunt Lydia say, Ordinary is what you are used to. This may not seem ordinary to you now, but after a time it will. It will become ordinary (Atwood 33). The repetition of ordinary is used to reinforce how harsh realities (e.g. public execution) are perceived and justified as normal by the citizens of Gilead; however, in Offred s previous life, she would have been repulsed to see a public hanging of an innocent person. With Aunt Lydia s presence and words casting a shadow in Offred s mind, she begins to have a sense of normalcy about life in Gilead. The Aunt Lydia s words are so powerful and influential that Offred begins to transform her way of thinking, which mirrors the lack of individuality that she displays. Not only can Offred not think for herself, but her vision is also controlled by Gilead. For instance, Offred and other handmaids must wear white wings, which are a headdress to restrict their vision. This is shown when Atwood writes, There remains a mirror, on the hall wall. If I turn my head so that the white wings framing my face direct my vision towards it...[I see] myself in it like a distorted shadow (9). The white wings are symbolic of her not being able to see reality and only what Gilead wants her to see; therefore, her vision is restricted and so are her thoughts. Furthermore, her vision is not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. Air Vice Marshal Francis Hubert Air Vice Marshal Francis Hubert (Frank) McNamara Medals and Awards On March of 1917, the allies had planned an attack on Gaza and they had subjected repeated attacks on Junction Station, an important Turkish supply centre, to be carried out by No. 1 Squadron, and No. 14 Squadron, R.F.C. During the attacks on 20th of March, an aircraft piloted by Captain D. from No. 1 Squadron, was forced to land due to being hit by ground fire. Despite the aircraft being a two seater, he had been flying the aircraft by himself. A great group of enemy on horses were close by and when they saw the aircraft, they began to gallop towards it. At that time, McNamara was on his way home. He had been on the same raid that day, and was severely wounded after being confronted by anti aircraft fire, despite his circumstances, McNamara decided to attempt a rescue on Captain D. Rutherford. He managed to make a safe landing beside the pilot, and the pilot climbed aboard McNamara s aircraft, which was a single seater. Therefore, the pilot could only stand on the wing and hold on to the struts, this made the aircraft very lop sided, and dragged the aircraft to one side. Due to this and his leg wound, McNamara could no longer control the aircraft, so the aircraft crashed while attempting to take off. Although, crashing, the two remained as they had been, and they set fire to the aircraft and decided to return to the pilot s aircraft. Pilot Rutherford s aircraft was close to being captured by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Delinquency In The 1950 s Media Turns the U.S.A Upsidedown As World War II came to a close and national aggression simmered down, the streets of the U.S. ran rampant with the pesky youth of the 1950s. Whose fault was this? Blame could be placed on the mandatory attendance at schools, or the lack of stay at home mothers, but the main culprit was the media. From the graphic images projected in movies, and the harsh language found in popular songs and intimate dances, to the new comic book series that were being printed off, media was the new tool that was molding the minds of America especially the youth. The rise of juvenile delinquency in the 1950 s was caused by the unceasing presence of media or peer culture . Movies and TV shows were growing faster now after WWII since TV s were becoming more affordable and people had more leisure time. Many popular movies in the 1950s had content that was not appropriate for the youth of the day, but were still viewed by people under the age of 18. • 44. Feminism in Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter Essay Written in 1850, The Scarlet Letter stood as a very progressive book. With new ideas about women, main characters stories intertwined, and many different themes, The Scarlet Letter remains today as a extremely popular novel about 17th century Boston, Massachusetts. Not only was the 19th century a time for the abolition of slavery movement but it was also the beginning of the first wave of feminism. Women such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Lucretia Mott catalyzed the women s rights movement. These prominent women believed that a woman s role was no longer in the house and that women should be afforded the same opportunity as men. Wilson s question, a question testing Pearl s religious knowledge and belief in god, exemplified her courage. An outspoken character, Pearl was beyond her age in knowledge as well as many other aspects. The fact that Hawthorne created this girl as an unyielding character illustrates his support for the feminist cause. Yet another time Pearl s aptitude surfaced was the warning to her mother. Come away, mother! Come away, or yonder old Black Man will catch you! He hath got hold of the minister already. (Hawthorne 123) This realization Pearl possessed between good and bad coupled with her intellect allows for her empowerment. Moreover, Pearl s role as a strong, prominent character showed 19th century Americans an alternative side young girls could possess. While Puritan women are weak and dependent upon their husbands, Hester Prynne is empowered and self reliant. A character designed by Hawthorne to show 19th century women that women s work could be valuable, Hester supports herself and her daughter by needlework. For, as the novel unfolds, the letter, intended by the Authorities to signify harsh but just condemnation, is made by Hester to signify something entirely different able, admirable. • 45. Gwendolyn Brooks s The Mother Gwendolyn Brooks is a famous, African American poetess who is famous for making a social commentary upon the urban society in which she lives. Clearly seen in three of her more popular poems, the mother , a song in the front yard , and What shall I give my children? Who are poor? , Brooks uses the struggles of impoverished motherhood to comment on the stymied lives of adult black women. This is obviously evident in her use of the tone of hopelessness, which transcends all three poems in differing forms that stem from regret in the mother , worry and overprotectiveness in a song in the front yard and frustration of lacking the necessities for children in What shall I give my children? Who are poor In her works, Brooks is known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The tone of hopelessness in this poem is very obviously the result of regret, or the feelings of what motherhood may have been. For a majority of the poem the mother focuses on what their lives would have been having never giggled or planned or cried (4) or how they will never wind up the sucking thumb (4). Although these are only a few examples it is very evident how the mother, although denied the joy of motherhood, longs for the child she almost had, saying, believe me, I knew you, though faintly, and I loved, I loved you/ All (5). In an attempt to take a more positive outlook on the mother tries to justify herself saying how much better the child s life would be, that as a mother she would never have the chance to neglect or beat/ Them... (4). The story behind the mother is just one example of hopelessness that Brooks prominently saw throughout her community, obviously this feeling of regret and lament was prevalent throughout many women who, although chose to have abortions, were not done out of not wanting the child, but by force in order to keep a job, house, or some other commitment in which carrying and properly raising a child would be near impossible. Another very powerful version of the overall tone of hopelessness in Brooks plays is the feeling of hopelessness that stems from a mother s worry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This plan led to the employees feeling as though they were not treated fairly because of the many rate changes. The employees did not have input into the plan and felt management was playing games with the formula. Most of us like to be valued as an employee and a person. This plan did not allow the employees to feel this way. As the morale dropped, so did production and from there, the bonuses dwindled. Instead of looking at themselves for the lack of bonuses, they blamed management. Their lack of understanding on the rate changes did not help the process. According to Maslow s Hierarchy, the employees needs were not met and frustration created tension, which created low to no production. The company faced major decisions and needed this situation to be resolved quickly. The managers faced a crisis and needed a solution before the plant was forced to close its doors and have to lay off the employees. The Scanlon plan created problems within the company and questions had to be formulated and put into place to be addressed before any major decisions could be made.
