This document announces a short-term course on hazardous waste management sponsored by the All India Council for Technical Education and hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee between July 9-13, 2007 and February 20-24, 2006. The course, coordinated by Dr. I. D. Mall, will provide an overview of issues relating to hazardous waste globally and in India, relevant legislation and regulations, characterization and identification of hazardous waste, authorization procedures, and methods for handling, processing, reprocessing and recycling hazardous waste.

2. HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT
Sustainability has been one of the most important factors. Rapid industrialization, urbanization
and fast economic growth worldwide phenomenon has resulted in large-scale environmental
degradation due to release of he quantities of solid waste containing hazardous waste (HW).
Indiscriminate discharge of this hazardous waste, which remains unattended and has resulted in
irreversible damage to the environment. The problem is becoming more serious in the
developing countries due to technological obstacles, limited financial resources and inadequate
understanding of the basic concepts. Effective control and management of hazardous waste has
become an issue of paramount importance. The training programme covers an overview of
hazardous waste scenario – Global and Indian, legislative and regulatory trends and impact,
characterization and identification of hazardous waste, authorization procedures, fate and
transport of hazardous contaminants, reprocessing and recycling of hazardous waste, evaluation
of risks and other recent developments in handling and processing of hazardous waste.
