1. Question 2- How effective is the combination of your main product
and ancillary texts?
For my media outcomes I created a music video, a CD digipak and a magazine advert and
chose to follow conventions of the indie genre. I did this by going for an artistic and abstract
aesthetic, using lights and camera tricks to make visually appealing shots for an audience to
enjoy and by creating graphic imagery on my ancillaries.
My music video explores youth and individuality by having a carefree main protagonist who
is being very quirky throughout. I also find that my ancillary tasks are quirky because they are
vibrant and unusual so all of my products are in keeping with a unique theme. My ancillaries
are almost like a pair as they follow the same layout and fonts and the imagery is the same.
This makes the work recognisable and I feel like it looks professional because there is a clear
uniformity and the work is consistent. In addition, each product is vibrant and cheerful and
this is something that links them all together and they all complement each other well in
terms of the overall atmosphere.
My digipak incorporates light trail photography and a photo of a firework explosion, these
images relate to my music video which highly consists of footage of lights and different light
techniques such as bokeh shots. I like this connection between the two as it represents the
kind of music and genre the band is about and alludes to the abstract aesthetic that I worked
towards.
Lights seem to be almost like iconography within all areas of my project, what with them
being a key component of my music video and digipak ancillary. I would argue that this is
what links my work together and it is something that stands out to an audience and makes
the work memorable.
Overall my products seem to be reminiscent of real media products, especially my ancillaries
as these are simple yet effective and the imagery is seemingly faultless as I took care to make
sure all of the edges weren’t harsh or that nothing looked out of place. I designed everything
with a clear image in my head of how I wanted the final products to look and with the use of
good software I managed to generate what I had envisioned.
