1. Music Video Analysis- Bring me the Horizon’s ‘Anthem’
Within the first few seconds we can see
that the music video is mainly
performance based with a narrative
enigma. The performance is also very
hectic and crazy which gives away the
rock genre of the band and the song. This
particular shot is reinforcing the band’s
name in the audiences’ minds with the
big, bright, clear band abbreviation.
This particular shot shows band
members ‘head banging’ which is
stereotypical of the rock genre and is a
move seen a lot in rock music videos.
This shot is emphasising the genre of
the band and their music and also adds
to the messy aesthetic of the music
video.
At first there is a narrative enigma with
shots of people wearing masks and it is
unclear what the story is behind them.
However they all start to rush into the
room where the band is performing and
it seems like these masked people are
representing the band’s wild and crazy
fans. The fans then proceed to dance is
what would be referred to as a ‘mosh
pit’. These are also very stereotypical of the rock genre and the usage of them in music
videos portrays the music as chaotic but full of energy.
2. With this scene towards the end of the
video the fans and frontman of the
band all appear to start dancing in
synchronisation. This suggests that
there is a sense of community within
the rock genre and almost creates this
illusion that the music is bringing people
together in harmony.
Overall, this music video sticks to stereotypes of the rock genre but portrays the overall
genre in a positive light. The video is clear that is it rock with the dark atmosphere and
tattooed lead singer, but these features add to the aesthetic of the video and help to
produce something that is in fitting with the genre.
