2. The aim for my project was to create and design a coherent marketing package
for an unsigned band. I had to design three packages which all had
marketing techniques. They all include a Music video, a DigiPak and an
Album advert. Throughout all three of the products, there is supposed to be
an obvious house style which flows throughout which would link within the
chosen genre.
An example of this would be how I had used the same background with my print
advert and DigiPak as the background was also used within the music video.
Also using the same filters with the print adverts and music video to make
them all related and linked together.
3. Costumes were an important part within our music video. The people in the band
needed to be dressed with that indie boy style to relate to the audience.
they needed to be inspiring so that they can start off a trend, which is what
many uprising indie artists do now. This shows their originality which you would
instantly relate to the indie genre. I overall feel that we have achieved this
within the music video due to the indie trends which have arrived now. Also,
with the print advertising photo shoot, we also chose outfits to relate to the
indie genre. Picking these were easy as we already had people who were
with the indie influence.
The main prop which we used throughout the whole of the music video is the
acoustic guitar. We felt that this was a big part of the indie style as they are
known for liking wholesome music which they like to create on their own. We
also felt that it would make the music video look slightly relaxed and not too
serious which is what they are known to do. We also tried to incorporate the
prop within the print advertisements. However I didn't use them as i thought
the marketing packages would be too alike.
We changed the outfits from the music video to the print advertisements as we
wanted to show a range of indie outfits for the band to become style icons
for their audience. we thought by showing a range of outfits, this would give
a good sense of their style and what they like overall as a band.
4. Lighting played a big part within our media products. We used a mixture of artificial
and non artificial lighting to create our music video. I feel that the mixture helped
us to experiment with all different types of lighting to see which would fit best for
our different locations. I have noticed whilst researching indie music videos, that
they also use a combination of artificial and non artificial lighting to show the
comparison and clear difference between the performance and narrative parts of
the music video.
For all of our narrative within our music video we used non artificial lighting. We didn't
need any artificial lighting as we filmed all of the narrative outside. Having the
outdoors for our lighting made the music video feel natural and realistic which
relates also to our genre of being relaxed and calm. The lighting for all of the day
which we filmed was quite cloudy but still light. This made it better to film as the sun
didn't glare in the camera lens and also it wasn't raining, so didn't effect the quality
of filming.
For our performance, we used artificial lighting as we used an in door drama studio
which had no windows. We used a spot light which highlighted the performer and
band as we put them also against a black background. We felt that artificial
lighting was important for this as we wanted the band to be the main focus in this
area and to make them become well known.
5. We also used natural lighting for my print advertisements photo shoots. We
wanted to get the same feel that the music video had. I think hat it worked
overall so that all of us in the group could have a link between our marketing
products. I think that the lighting helped as it also linked in with our narrative
chilled and relaxed theme.
6. I have chosen one particular font which runs throughout both of my DigiPak and
Print advert. I downloaded a font from a website called ‘DaFont.com’ and
this particular font was called ‘Indie Flower’. I thought that this fitted well as it
created a common theme, whereas if I had a range of different fonts, then
this would make the print advertisements look slightly jumbled and wouldn't
flow right. Also, this font had been made and suited for a particular genre
and wasn't a font off of word, which can sometimes look repetitive and
boring.
With this text I chose two of the main and bold colours to represent it which are
black and white. These stood out the most and were more effective than
picking a vibrant colour.
When looking at existing typography from indie albums, I have noticed that they
also do use the same font throughout their DigiPak and print advert so that
you can see the overall house style. They have quite simple fonts, but yet you
can see that they are effective by how they stand out against the main and
central image.
7. I feel that throughout my marketing package I have used a constant
theme which has allowed me to show off a house style. With my
print advertisements I have used filters which many other popular
indie bands do to show individualism and to be unique. I edited my
photographs using a software called Photoshop and made sure that
I edited all photographs the same way so that it had an overall
theme and house style. The filters represent a vintage theme which
you can portray as old and unique which is what the style ‘Indie’ is
all about.
