The document discusses the effectiveness of combining a main music product with ancillary texts like a music video, website, and album cover. It notes that subtle connections were made between the products, like using the same font and featuring a bath in all materials, but that bolder colors and styles from the ancillary texts did not translate well to the music video locations. Overall, more direct incorporation of features from the ancillary texts could have improved the combination of the three products.
1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN
PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY
TEXTS?

2. MUSIC VIDEO
My research into exciting media found that music products come as a package, meaning that
the music video, digipak and website all link together. Study found

When creating my music video it was very important that it had the same style and aesthetic of
my ancillary tasks. Visually my video is not similar to my ancillary tasks. The bold colour
scheme was hard to convey in my music video due to the locations chosen. Colour grading
could have been used to create the vibrant colours however this my opinion this would have
undermined the serious subject of my music video. My creative decision was to make subtle
connections between my ancillary and music video. The main feature in all of my media
products is the bath. The bath has become a trade mark for my media products. Originally I
have chosen a location with the same style of role top bath like my ancillary's however the
nature of the location limited my shot types. The end scene within my music video is the same
style of shot I used for the bath cartoon on my ancillary tasks. This is a cultural code as
audiences need to understand the reference to my other media products. If audiences make his
link I have been successful in combing my products together.
3. Another connection between my ancillary and music video is the cross imagery. It is a very
minimalistic approach to linking my products together however the cross resembles the
church scenes in my music video. The issue with making such subtle links is that audiences
may not see the preferred reading during the decoding stage of watching my music
video. To combine my products together the same font 'White and Black' and 'Doctor Punk'
has been used throughout all of my media products, this shows a sense of continuity
between the three products.
Dyer Stars Theory states that companies create stars to sell media products. In my ancillary
and music video I have been successful in creating this ‘star’ figure. The character can been
seen as an Everyman Character as audiences can relate and identify themselves within the
character. This will increase the audiences reaction to my product as they can see
themselves in the same situation of my character. Using my artist throughout my three
products is very conventional within exciting media; it helps audiences see a relationship
between the music video, website and album cover.
4. ALBUM COVER AND
WEBSITE
Personally I feel I have been very successful in
combining my ancillary products together. My album
and website both follow the same bold and vibrant
colour scheme. This was a post-modernist approach
as it resembles the artwork of Andy Warhall.
Mimicking the pop art style was not my original
intension however it was effective in helping me link
my two products together. The bold and artificial
colour scheme was on the other hand hard to
interpret on my music video. The locations used did
not have the same lively and loud appearance. The
most recognizable feature in my ancillaries is the
cartoon imagery, this has helped create brand identity
in my products as the creative and individual style is
very recognizable to audiences.
Over all to improve the combination between my three
products I would have needed to incorporate more
features of my ancillary products to my music video.
