Similarities Between Macbeth And The Destructors
William Shakespeare and Graham Greene both present characters as being both heroes and villains in the tale of the tragedy of Macbeth and the short
novel of The Destructors. Greene portrays ordinary people who have both the capacity of good and evil. Macbeth is different as we have the character of
Macbeth who doesn't have a clear cut good or evil, as throughout the novel his character slowly decays into a villain from being our protagonist.
In Macbeth, the first time being switched from the shadowy world of witches to the physical world of battle we are presented with the characters of
Ross and the Captain. Shakespeare uses these characters as devices to provide us with an insight into the character of Macbeth heroism. The Captain,

We can see this when he say's 'Old misery' Mike said, hes on his way "But why?" T. said. "He told me. . . ." He protested with the fury of the child
he had never been, "It isn't fair. This passage shows a glimpse of emotion, which we haven't seen before from Trevor. He is becoming aggravated
due to the arrival of Old Misery. This highlights what the destruction of the house means to him, as if it is his piece of artwork and that Trevor
feels that all destruction is a form of creation. This could also apply to other aspects of The Destructors, as the destruction of Blackies gang resulted
in the creation of Trevor's gang. By Greene making the narrator say 'the fury of the child he had never been' leaves another hint into the roots of his
villainy, growing up without a childhood would result in lack of understanding of people's feelings, and therefore could be the cause of him having not
a shred of guilt. What Greene was trying to achieve here was to portray his heartlessness villainy by showing his merciless actions towards this old man
who trusted him which reveals the delinquent villain inside

Love's Labour's Lost
Love's Labour's Lost
The Elizabethans thought of it merely as "a wittie and pleasant comedie" ; Samuel Johnson remarked that "all the editors have concurred to censure
[it]" ; and William Hazlitt opined, "If we were to part with any of the author's comedies, it should be this." It was not until well into the twentieth
century that Love's Labour's Lost really came into its own, and this fact alone may be enough to make a case for it as Shakespeare's most
forward–looking play. It is its ending in particular, an unexpectedly grim conclusion in which nothing is actually concluded, that has appealed to
modern sensibilities and made Love's Labour's Lost the Shakespeare play for the twentieth century. Trevor Nunn makes this point emphatically ... Show

Nunn's new production, however, breaks this tradition, radically altering the effect envisioned by Shakespeare with the addition of a mere 30 seconds
or so of extra–textual material at the beginning. John Peter's description perfectly captures the feeling of the opening moments: "We are in a forest
clearing. The darkened Olivier stage is dominated by a bare beech, huge and ancient. Soldiers rush on. Explosions, gunfire. This is the first world war.
An officer...gets badly wounded. But this is Love's Labour's Lost, is it not? A comedy, surely?" This is indeed the reaction of the audience as
MarcadГ©, identifiable by his traditional all–black costume, comes onstage (in the text, his first and only appearance is his surprise entrance at the
end) and says portentously, "The words of Mercury are harsh after the songs of Apollo" (in the text, this line is also at the end and is Armado's). A
kneeling officer looks soulfully off into space, and the scene changes: foliage appears on the tree, the lighting comes up to suggest dappled sunlight,
merry–looking people in Edwardian costume cross the stage, and the first scene in the text finally begins, revealing the kneeling officer to be Berowne
and Shakespeare's entire play to be a flashback.
This added and adapted prologue, however brief, is quite significant: it lets the audience know from the very start that all will not be well at the end,
thus covering the entire rest of the play with a cloud

Comparison Of Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus
Pieter Brueghel was a 16th century Netherlandish Renaissance painter who completed "Landscape with the Fall of Icarus" in 1558. His painting was
inspired by the ancient Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus. William Carlos Williams, a Puerto–Rican American poet, wrote a poem inspired by
Brueghel's work in 1960 similarly titled "Landscape with the Fall of Icarus". There is a common theme displayed in both works which both execute and
establish this theme with different visual and literary connotations and strengths using differing amounts of information provided through their artistic
mediums. which create an effectiveness with the end–all goal being to explain that time will pass by regardless of what is going on in an individual's
world even if they want it all to stop at once.
The painting lays a scene of a landscape of an Island territory and several different people and animals. In the eye catching foreground "we see a
farmer herding a large amount of animals" their focus is darted to the left of the painting. we will come to learn that all mentioned figures and
objects in the painting have a visual focus to facing to the left, as our eyes draw towards the right and farther out we notice off in the "distance you
see an image of the fisherman off to the coast (a pair of legs submersed in water as well not too far off). In the north you see a ship that seems to
dwarf them both in size and space." With this we can draw the connection that this relates to the idea that time

Twelfth Night Comparative Essay
The recurring themes in Shakespeare's comedies are gender identity, social order, politics, and transformation. The characters in his comedies range
from the very basic, such as Katherine and Petruchio in Taming of the Shrew, to more complex characters, like Feste in Twelfth Night. The three films,
Taming of the Shrew,Much Ado About Nothing and Twelfth Night are very diverse in the handling of these themes and the characters of the plays.
This diversity of theme and characters is owed to the films' directors, Franco Zeffirelli, Kenneth Branagh, Joss Whedon and Trevor Nunn. The
directors give a different perspective to Shakespeare's actual text and we, as the audience, see Shakespeare's characters differently because of the film
medium and theses directors' vision.

She writes, "perspective staging reproduces through illusion and the "depth of field – the holding and closing the audience's eye brings the illusion to
the audience of joining the characters on stage" (155). Belsey's analysis of this vanishing point explains Branagh's opening scene in Much Ado
About Nothing is a painting that eventually fades to an actual hillside where the play begins and Beatrice is reading poetry to the assembled
picnickers. We, as the audience, go from being an observer to being involved in the story. In the Twelfth Night, Nunn employs a different technique as
he switches between scenes of his actors to create parallels in action and characters. For example, when Malvolio is prattling on in the dungeon saying
he is not mad, and Sebastian in the house wondering if he has gone mad because Olivia is so taken with him and she is a stranger to him. In this
instance, Nunn's shifting of scenes in the film gives the audience context to Shakespeare's complex

King Lear Comparison Essay
Originally written at the start of the 17th century, William Shakespeare's play, King Lear, has become one of his most famed works. The tragedy was
first adapted for the screen in 1909 as a black and white, silent film. Almost a century later in 2008, King Lear was once more brought to life through
director Trevor Nunn's film adaptation of the same name. Staring Ian McKellen as King Lear, the film adaptation is based on the 2007 production of
the play by the renowned Royal Shakespeare Company. King Lear is a story of betrayal, loss and madness and to accurately convey this while
simultaneously distinguishing it from other screen renditions, Nunn alters the setting and utilises the colours of the costumes and backdrop to
symbolise the virtues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Characters with titles that derive from English place names, such as the Duke of Cornwall, indicate that the film takes place in England. Also, many
scenes occur on heaths which can be commonly found throughout England but rarely in Russia. However, the costumes worn by male characters,
especially Lear's scarlet tunic, closely resemble those worn by the Tsar and his high–ranking officials. Additionally, Lear's 100 knights have also been
transformed into 100 singing, squat–dancing Cossacks which further reinforces the films connection to Imperial Russia as Cossacks are an ethnic group
known for their historic loyalty to the Tsar. The inclusion of rifles as well as glasses suggests that King Lear is set in the 1800's which coincides with
both Victorian England and Imperial Russia. Although using elements from two eras may confuse some viewers, historical and geographical references
are negligible to most audience members, allowing them to generate their own opinion about the setting. At the same time, the setting makes Nunn's
production unique. Since 1909, King Lear has been adapted for the screen on numerous occasions with the majority of these adaptations retaining the
original setting of pre–Christian England. By drastically changing the setting, it distinguishes Nunn's King Lear from other

The Development of William Mossop's Character in Hobson's Choice William Mossop started off as a lodger lodging with Ada Figgins. He was
shy and had no ambitions working at Hobson's shoe shop at the bottom of the chain. At the end of the play he was ambitious, married and the joint
owner of Hobsons shop. The audience sympathises with Willie the first time he appears on stage because he 'only comes half way up the trap
door'. This is because of his social standing and he feels that he is not worthy to speak to Hobson and the 'upper class people'. As the play progresses
Willie acquires a greater sense of confidence. This is shown when Willie begins to speak more and is further educated and more self–assured. Willie

Furthermore, in the middle of the play Hobson accepts Willie and Maggie's marriage. He exclaimed accepts the fact that Maggie and Willie are
married but then goes on to say, 'Maggie, you've had your way and done what you wanted, I'm none the prouder of your choice and I wont lie and
pretend I am'. To this point it seems that Hobson is not content and has no intentions of speaking to them again. However, proceeds to say, 'but I've
shaken your husbands hand and that's a sign for you, the milks split and ill not cry'. Willie has now returned to his initial opinion and it seems he
has approved of the wedding even though he doesn't endorse the idea. Later on in the play Hobson has a word with Willie with and pronounces
'you're the best of the bunch, a backward lad but you no your trade and it's an honest one. This gives Willie additional confidence. Willie visits the
local pub, 'The Moonrakers' on a daily basis with his friends even though the doctor has told him that he has 'drunk himself within six months of an
early grave'. The doctors' advice to Hobson is to 'stay out of the pub and to get a woman back into the house and to take the doctors prescription'.
Hobson replies by saying 'I'm particular to what I put into my stomach' and 'you ask me to give up my reasonable refreshment'. After the doctor has
spoken to Hobson about getting Maggie back she walks in. She came because Tubby told her that Hobson is 'seriously ill'. The doctor notifies

Desmond Tutu 's Impact On Society
Desmond Tutu brings hope for goodness, reconciliation, and honesty to humanity. He is a defining example for an Architect of Hope. In the last 85
years and counting, this man has been through the struggle time after time. He has lived through sickness, harassment, and a sickening form of racism
in the apartheid period South Africa. Through these difficult times, he stuck to his beliefs and remained a peaceful man. As a result,Desmond Tutu 's
impact on society has and will continue to inspire good–hearted people to take action on their beliefs.

When he first saw him, Trevor paid great respect to Tutu and his mother. Despite being a small act, it made a big difference in Tutu's outlook towards
white people. In an interview with Sir David frost in 2013, Desmond Tutu says that he still has never forgotten that moment, and has credited Trevor's
influence for many of his accomplishments. (The Early Influence of Father Trevor Huddleston –Archbishop Desmond Tutu)
At a young age, Desmond Tutu got tuberculosis, a serious, life threatening sickness. Treatment would be painful, but luckily doctors detected it early so
he had a plan for recovery. All throughout this near death experience, Tutu found comfort in God, and gained a tremendous support from Trevor
Huddleston, the priest who inspired him initially. After a grueling time in the hospital, Desmond Tutu was released from the hospital at 16 (Crompton
14–16). While many may call this an unlucky mishap, Desmond Tutu came out of the experience grateful, and appreciating life much more than had he
not gone through pain. Desmond Tutu's experience with pain is hopeful and inspiring in the fact that it actually changed himself for the better. It
resonated with me personally because I always thought that pain was a bad thing and that it should be avoided at all costs. But after reading about

Why Who Won 't The Big Man Go Away? Why?
"No! No!" I screamed frightly. What does he want? How did this happen? Why is this happening to us? Why won't this big man go away? Why can't
he leave us alone? Why? Why? Why?
I looked out the apartment window at the the smoke filled sky, the barren streets, and flickering street lamps three stories up then the poor bakery
below. I ran my finger along the rigged cement windowsill and sang a song "I was a poor man living in San Francisco..." The door opened and in
wobbled my mom with her bony legs carrying a red bottle of water, a loaf of fresh brown bread, and two dark orange carrots. I ran to give her a big
warm hug and almost knocked the groceries out of her scrawny hands.
Then, I scrambled and opened up the brown cupboards for the only two things we had peanut butter and jelly. "Get the plates out Jimmy," mom
ordered. I grabbed the plates off the counter top and brought everything to the table.
We each took a piece of bread out of the bag and spread the peanut butter till it was smooth on the bread. Then took the grape jelly and slobbered that
on and took a shark bite out of it. "Slow down or you 're going to get a stomach ache" she stated. Ding! Ding! the doorbell sounded. My mother got up,
pushed in her chair and walked to the door as her steal toes went Ting! Ting! against the wood floors. And then stopped at the door, she opened it with
a gasp like she didn't expect this person to be there.
"Momma, who is it," I yelped as I shoved my face full of the orange carrot

Othello, By William Shakespeare
'Othello' was a tragedy of incomprehension at the deepest level of human dealings as no one in the play came to an understanding of himself or any of
the surrounding characters. The play 'Othello' by William Shakespeare focused on tragedy through the anguish of the main character 'Othello' which
lead to the suffering and death of numerous characters including himself. Appearance Vs. Reality challenged human dealings within the play 'Othello' as
no–one came to see anyone's true self and no–one sees through the actions or words of others. Jealousy blinds Othello which transforms his intelligent
speech in turn transforming his human dealings which ultimately leads to the death of him and his wife. Samuel Taylor Coleridge was a 19th century ...

Reality which was evident through the paradox: "Were I the Moor I would not be Iago. ...But I will wear my heart upon my sleeve/For daws to peck at.
I am not what I am."(Act 1 Scene 1). Iago's hatred towards 'the Moor' and his revelation that he was not what he was, was the earliest proof to the
audience that in fact Iago was holding a facade on his entire character. This also represented Roderigo's obliviousness of Iago's words to the audience.
During openings to the play 'Othello' in 1990 by Trevor Nunn, began with a half–lit empty stage. In contextual reference, 'The moor' was a racial term
which was categorically used for Africans or those of Arab descent during the 1600s. In turn, this contradicted the way 'Honest Iago' dealt with 'the
Moor' in his presence. This was evident in the rhetorical question "Good my lord, pardon me;...Utter my thoughts! Why say they are vile and
false?"(Act 3, Scene 3). The ironic stature of the quote displayed to the audience the deceptive games Iago was playing with the characters of 'Othello'.
In reference to Iago's character, critic William Hazlitt had stated that Iago was an extreme instance of "diseased intellectual activity with an almost
perfect indifference to moral good or evil rather a decided preference for the latter". This linked to Iago's 'motiveless malignity' as he attempted to
justify the deceptive plans he was carrying out in the play which is represented in his soliloquy "But for my

Personal Case Analysis: Working Together In Groups
Case Analysis MGS
Working together in a group can be overwhelming due to the different personalities and work habits that team members bring along with them. It
takes managerial knowledge and leadership traits to see the skills in each member and bring them together to achieve a common purpose. At the
beginning of the semester when we were all assigned our groups I had my judgements about the individuals with whom I would be working with for
the rest of the term. When I first met Logan, my first impression of him was he was a laid back guy and very introverted. He came off as someone who
would be a minimal contribution to the group and rely heavily on the team. Learning that his Keirsey temperament profile awarded him guardian status
was a complete shock to me. The characteristics of a guardian were the complete opposite from my judgement of him. Guardians are supposed to
be hardworking, responsible and leaders. Learning all this information I believe that his fun going nature will be what is easiest to work with him.
His laid back attitude is what is going to make it hard to work with him. To get the best results out of Logan I will have to give him small work related
tasks to keep him engaged and responsible. This way he is well aware of the task that is going on and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

being a little older than all of us seems a little more cautious to change than the others. This factor will make working with Lonnie harder. When
working with Lonnie individually I will be more than accepting of his assistance but I will have to spend a little more time convincing him of the

Analysis Of Caricature Of Humanity In 'The Runner'
Caricature of Humanity "The Runner" by DeLillo tells of a self–absorbed runner who is witnessing a mysterious kidnapping without caring about it.
The runner is a perfect portrayal of uncaring citizens, who lack empathy with others unless they are directly connected to them. While running, the
narrator witnesses a car pulling onto the lawn, this is odd but he ignores it, it appears he does not care about other people, he prefers to continue
running. The narrator notices that "a car came off the road, bouncing onto the sloped lawn."(47) The runner is seeing a car come off the road onto the
grass in the park where he is running. Since the narrator is not stopping to investigate he appears self–absorbed and selfishly uncurious. The runner's
neighbor explains she, "heard the car when it came over the curb. More or less bang on the grass. The father gets out and takes the little boy."(49) His
neighbor just witnessed a child being kidnapped, although she does not know anyone involved, she assumes the kidnapper is the boy's father. The
runner seems disinterested in both the kidnapping and his neighbor's opinion. He seems to feel the kidnapping shouldn't concern him; he wasn't
kidnapped, and he didn't know who was. Why should he care? What the runner doesn't realize is that this affects him emotionally and physically. This
is a community concern. Whether or not the father was the kidnapper the entire area becomes concerned with safety. The runner, without thinking,
crushes his neighbor's ideal situation even though he does not seem to care about the kidnapping. The narrator questions his neighbor and hears her
response "You can't be sure, can you? I saw them both and I saw the child." (50)When asked if she was sure the father was the kidnapper the neighbor
states she saw the mother, the child, and the kidnapper. This implies that she does not know the real situation, but is merely projecting the most ideal
situation. The viewpoint of the neighbor is interesting because our main character disagrees with the idea that the father was just taking his child.
Although this is the ideal situation for both the child and the bystanders the runner takes a cynical view. This most likely means he would rather

Antibullying Movement : Anti-Bullying As A Social Movement
Anti–Bullying as a Social Movement
In 1999, two teenage boys entered their high school and methodically shot fellow students and a teacher. Then the pair committed suicide in the school
library. They had killed 13 people and injured 23 others. (CNN Library) The country was shaken by this violence and horrible demonstration of hatred.
This traumatic event was spurred by bullying, and this act the nation to react to the bullying crisis in America.
Bullying has been present through time. It results from someone believing that there is a power imbalance, they believe that they are more important,
better, or valuable than another person. This is the root of many problems in society. It is defined by the US government as, "Bullying is unwanted,
aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to
be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems" (U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services)
3.2 million students from 6th to 10th grade are victims of bullying every year. 90% of 4–8th graders say they have been bullied. 1 in 10 students drop
out of school because of bullying. Approximately 160,000 students skip school every day because of bullying. (Cohn and Canter, Ph.D.) These facts

My Hero As A Hero : A Hero
When I was young, my father and I would always spend the summer on the glistening white sand of the beach at the end of the road. We would splash
knee–deep in the cold waves, kicking the water so that droplets of water sparkled like crystals in underneath the warm sun. We would lay on our
backs and admire the sky and watch the clouds swirl into marvellous shapes. We would build sandcastles that had moats and bridges and imaginary
soldiers that would spar with thrusting swords and swinging shields. These picturesque days went on and on. They were a constant cycle of deep
blue skies, imprinted on my mind. My oldest memories are all full of my father in these moments, as he played in the warm sand and stretched out
his frown lines. Now, as I stand on the very same beach, moving my toes in the same warm sand, fifteen years on, I can't help but miss it. Miss
him. I can't help but miss him regardless of the pain he injected into himself and everyone else who cared about him in the years leading up to him
leaving. To those who knew him, he was an archaeologist. Yet to me, he was an adventurer. A daredevil. A hero. There would be days when my
father would walk out into the unknown parts of the world for days on end before coming home and telling me stories of the dragon he slayed, the
epic battles he fought and the glistening treasure he found from the old, pirates map. I would always listen eagerly, as if this was my bible. However,
I never hid my desperation for him not to go.

Persuasive Essay On Youth And Bullying
Coming home after a long day at school, and all you want is to lie down on your bed and check your social media, have a few laughs at a couple of
videos and maybe message a couple of friends.unfortunately for some people their days do not go so smoothly imagine being verbally attacked and
tormented everyday, you absolutely hate going to school and you do not even enjoy going home because you know that the bullying is going to follow
you home and continue through your social media. Bullying in this generation is not taken serious enough and it is time for everyone to be aware on
how dangerous it is.
Its 2017 and bullying still remains the same in fact it has increased. Bullies and mean people have been around for as long as anyone can
remember , but due to newer technologies being made more ways of bullying have been created which means more ways for people to cyberbully.
Most bullying occurs on instagram, facebook, email etc.. if you scroll through any of your social medias there is not a chance that you will get to the
bottom of the page without seeing a form of hate.statistics show that eleven percent of adolescents and teenagers report that embarrassing or
damaging photos have been taken of them without their knowledge or consent.sometimes teenagers take photos of other people without them
knowing and share it online and make a mockery out of them on purpose,to them they may consider it a "joke" and will laugh about it and share it
around not knowing how much of an impact it could make on that person's well being and life.there is a difference between a couple of friends joking
around and having a little bit of banter compared to someone who is being targeted and harmed continuously by hurtful words or embarrassing
photos.Teenagers usually do horrible things like this to 'fit in','be popular' or for their own selfish reasons.
One of the effects of bullying is that it can change the victim's personality. It can cause people who are normally confident and happy to become
self–conscious, shy, and unsure. Most of the time victims of bullying may also become sad or depressed, keeping them from trying new things and
excelling. Once a person has been bullied, they may hesitate to participate in situations

Ralph Nader’s Life Lesson in The Seventeen Traditions
Ralph Nader's book, The Seventeen Traditions, discusses several traditions, seventeen in total, which the author learned from his parents, siblings, and
other individuals in the community and draws certain inspiring life lessons for the current society. The book is genially human and full of sensory
chronicles. Through the key traditions outlined in the book, Nader looks back at his Lebanese background and childhood experiences that directly
shaped his worldview. This review analyses some of the most significant traditions in the book such asfamily table, independent thinking, health, and
business. These key traditions will also be vital in discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the book.
Nader's book has really achieved its principal purpose, which is to educate the society on some of the values and traditions that are vital in shaping a
person's life. Through his key seventeen traditions, the author has succeeded in creating a modern–day fable on how one can grow from a child to a
responsible and successful adult. Nader's tradition of the family table proves to be the most significant base in a child's education. The author reveals
that the family table provided an ideal place in which his parents taught him and his siblings respect and manners. To the author, most of the historical
and cultural topics together with various proverbs were discussed at the family table. This tradition has some connections with my childhood
experiences. Just like in the author's case, my

Literary Analysis Of 'The Widow's Lamnt In Springtime'
William Carlos Williams was from Rutherford, New Jersey, born in 1883. By trade, he was both a doctor and writer. Williams published poetry,
novels, and essays in small magazines. Williams started as an imagist movement poet, "which emphasized simplicity, clarity of expression, and
precision through the use of exacting visual images" (poets.org). He later began to write more about the life of everyday people. His poem, "The
Widow's Lament in Springtime" follows this writing style.
The poem "The Widow's Lament in Springtime" is a poem about a women who has lost her husband of thirty five years. Williams writes in the voice
of a grieving woman instead of in his own voice. Now that her husband has died, the widow cannot find joy in her yard that she used to love. The
widow may even be considering suicide. Williams, writing in free verse, writes a metaphor comparing the grief of a widow to her blooming yard in the
springtime setting a tone of great sadness for the widow.
The title itself gives us important clues about this poem. From the beginning before even reading the first line of the poem, we know that it will
be a sad story. The widow being someone who has experienced a loss and lament is a word used for passionate grief and sorrow. Springtime is a
time of growth and rebirth, the affirming of new life. Williams' title may lead us to believe that the widow is in the early stages of life without her
husband and the early stages of grief. This may be her first spring without her husband. She is exploring the overwhelming feelings of grief over
losing her husband, comparing her grief to the new life or blooming of her yard. The widow begins by telling us "Sorrow is my own yard" (Reed).
She, the widow is comparing the sorrow and grief that she feels with her yard. She takes ownership of her pain in the phrase "my own". Springtime
is usually a time of renewal and growth, but for the widow it is a time of sorrow and pain, deep sadness because her husband is not there with her

Conflict And Conflict In The Distant Past By William Trevor
The Distant Past is a short story, wrote by William Trevor, addresses the interweaving of the past and present. At first in the story, it seems as if the past
tensions between the British and Irish have evaporated and happening a good cultural encounter but later in the story, this assumption proves to be
untrue. It depicts the lives of two descendants of the Protestant Middleton family and "Old Irish" inhabitants in a time of the Troubles in the 1970s. The

Essay on Florianne by Daniel Woodrell
A horrific event may change life entirely. Even worse, an unsolved mystery regarding a loved one may lead to despair and restrain a person from
moving on. While knowing the truth may bring a feeling of closure, inquietude and uneasiness may ensue uncertainty. Theshort story Florianne, written
by Daniel Woodrell, tells about a father whose entire life revolves around the mysterious disappearance of his daughter. Even eleven years after she
vanished he still hasn't begun to move on. Throughout the story the reader may interpret the disappearance with different approaches. One may either
assume that the daughter was kidnapped, or that she ran away herself from her home and the small–town–life. The ... Show more content on

Florianne comes from the word flora, which is the Latin word for flower. It's derived from the word flos, with the meaning flower or blossom.. In the
story there's described a change in Florianne's character and behavior. The narrator says '... the girl ran to fat for so long, had a roly–poly figure until
the year before she went gone...That meant so much to her, to finally have a figure clothes looked good on' (page 42, lines 4–10). Florianne blossomed
before she vanished. Henry also blames Florianne's weight gain on her mother while describing her figure as a roly–poly figure. He's to some extent
(14:6) bullied Florianne and just a year before she disappeared she found the strength and determination to change her body and her life. 'This course
of action can be interpreted as...' She gains control over her life and in contrast to her father's self–pity, she's going to take action over her fate, just like
her mother did.
Daniel Woodrell succeeds in creating a short story which forces the reader to consider different scenarios. Paranoia and obsession are luring beneath
the surface of a protagonist portrayed as a desperate father unable to move on. Daniel Woodrell shows how a tragic event may consume a person as
well as leave said person in denial and without the opportunity to proceed. And while the upfront possibility that the father is true in his assumption that
his daughter was

Analysis Of Shakespeare 's ' King Lear '
The opportunity to view both productions of King Lear has appeared twice for me in the past two years. The first time I viewed Trevor Nunn's
2009 production of King Lear my review would have been based solely on my ability to understand the dialogue and my appreciation of the acting of
Ian McKellen. Two years later I have a better understanding of the actual play and while I still enjoy the 2009 production the 1982 production directed
by Jonathan Miller presents the words of William Shakespeare in a more accurate and period specific manor.
From the opening scenes of Trevor Nunn's 2009 production of King Lear, the audience is made aware of a dark, ominous cloud that is about to
envelope them. The use of low lights and spotlights allows for a slow augmentation of the yet to come tragic aspects of the play. The minimal use
of props and background sets allows his audience to focus on the characters and their dialogue. Besides the set design, background music for any
movie can also make or break a production. The 1982 production directed by Jonathan Miller declined to have any music from the opening scene and
went directly into dialogue whereas Nunn's version has an opening musical score that is reminiscent of a scene from the Phantom of the Opera. The
music is a lead in to an over dramatic scene where the people bow down to King Lear and subsequently the dialogue of the play begins. The 1982
production withdraws from any musical score and begins the opening scene with the

women took their places in the working industry while the men were off at were. Wonder Woman's character resembles the attitude towards women

Women are now portrayed as "stabbing each other in the back" and being "overly sexualized" (Wonder Women). Portraying women as evil and
overly sexualized sends out the wrong message to viewers. It sends messages that women cannot be the heroes. If they are not villains then they are
often in need of rescue. The women seen on TV and comic books are wearing revealing outfits. As the film points out, this leads to "sexiness becoming
the way of signaling empowerment". Young girls deserve better than to think dressing provocatively is a way of showing empowerment.

Discussion of How Christians Can Put Their View of Racism into Action
All of the Christian teachings on racism have originally started from the teachings of the scripture. It is because of this that Christians are aware that
they have a responsibility to bring peace and reconciliation. However not all Christians take up this responsibility, maybe this is due to the fact that
most people today go with the majority and rarely speak out as an individual.
Some people however have stood up for themselves and spoken out in an attempt to gain justice without using violent methods to prove their points,
they are known as Christian Pacifists. There are many well–known Christian Pacifists, such as Martin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

One of Desmond Tutu's most famous quotes was: "I am puzzled about which Bible people are reading when they suggest religion and politics don't

Politics have lead in the past to the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, and when this happened the prophet's spoke out, so Christians today
should test government policies against Christian teaching.
Like Desmond Tutu, Trevor Huddleston also stated that Christianity was totally opposed to the system in South Africa: "Christina s are not only

Glory Road And Remember The Titans : Movie Analysis

these by number, they focus on the key rules that will help their team succeed. The biggest rule that the films focused on was the emphasis on interests,
not positions. Each of the leaders within the teams had to redirect the focus of the group to their end goal and not how they felt about each other to get
there.
Each coach or team leader also faced issues regarding diversity and the need to discuss undiscussable issues. Schwarz describes undiscussable issues
as, "ones that are relevant to the group's task but that group members believe they can't discuss openly in the group without some negative
consequences" (page 7 GROUND RULES). Specifically, in Glory Road and Remember the Titans, the teams had to discuss their issues of prejudice

is your whole life. It is a sense of being with God. It is not a one way system, but in fact a two way bond. Being a disciple of God gives you a sense of
who you are. You have the position of being part of God's children as well as being a child of your parents. This is an incomparable feeling. A

must do good things and not bad. You must know how to function in a family. To be a dedicated Christian you are required to visit the church on a

The Death of a Salesman and Soucouyant both broach the topic of memory, in opposite but complementary ways. Where 'Death' is about falsifying

Defamiliarization In William Carlos Williams's To A Poor...
What do words actually mean? When we are reading, many of us don't actually stop to think about the meaning of each word (unless the word is
unfamiliar), instead we just assume what it means–we read automatically. Looking at the poem, "To A Poor Old Woman" by William Carlos Williams,
we see the Shklovsky's concept of "defamiliarization" in use. When we look at Shklovsky's concept, "The technique of art is to make objects
'unfamiliar' to make forms difficult, to increase the difficulty and length of perception because the process of perception is an aesthetic end in itself
and must be prolonged" (Rivkin and Ryan 9). Using this same concept, looking at the first stanza of "To a Poor Old Woman," we see the way that the
stanza was structured in a way to make it unfamiliar. The author splits the sentences up where they normally wouldn't be split up, so that gives that
sense of unfamiliarity, so we begin to question what the words actually mean. If a person attempts to read it as a normal sentence, we would see that
someone is eating a plum, the street is a paper bag, and something is in her hand. The reason I believe the lines are broken up in a "weird" way is
because it's trying to give that sense of unfamiliarity to get an audience to focus on what this stanza is really trying to say. Looking at the second
stance, we see the repetition of "They taste good to her" written in different forms. This repetition gives an unfamiliar sense because each time it
repeats, it gives off

Essay about William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night: Feste
Trevor Nunn's (1996) adaptation of Twelfth Night illustrates the complexity of Feste's character and how important he is to the overall play. Ben
Kingsley, the actor, presents Feste as sympathetic and gentle choric figure. It is Feste who allows the audience to see the films respect for the original
play, and the existing issues within it. This includes the defencelessness of women, and the attractive, but dangerous, qualities of altering one's true
sexual identity. Interestingly, unlike the original script, Nunn opens his first scene withFeste observing Viola struggle to shore after the shipwreck she
has experienced. In this context, Kingsley's Feste is revealed for the first time. He is shown as a mysterious and isolated individual, who ... Show more

This compassion for Olivia is extended throughout the film to include two other female characters; Viola and Maria. He cares for these women and
envisions them in a happier state. It's evident that there is more than meets the eye when Feste's status is concerned. He may be labelled as a fool, but
indeed his unique intelligence makes the individuals around him the fools. His title of "fool" gives him employment in order to survive, and nothing
more. However, as stated above, it does not describe who he is truly by mind, heart and soul. He is intelligent, gentle, and empathetic especially with
his lady Olivia. In her court Feste is more than an average jester; he is a member of her family who, unlike the rest of her servants, has the freedom to
roam as he pleases. After she suffers the loss of her father and brother, Feste is the most important figure in her life. He became her father and brother,
caring and watching over her. For this reason, when he takes advantage of his freedom, remaining absent for days, Olivia becomes furious with him.
This is particular in scene one–act five, when Feste attempts to regain her trust with his intelligent humour. Clown. Good madonna, why mourn'st
though? Olivia. Good Fool, for my brother's death Clown. I think his soul is in hell, madonna Olivia. I know his soul is in heaven, fool Clown. The

Analysis Of Allen Ginsberg's Howl
"Hold back the edges of your gowns, Ladies, we are going through hell," (Sullivan 1) as William Carlos Williams put it, in introducing the first
edition of Allen Ginsberg's Howl. Most famously known for Howl, Ginsberg was recognized for his obscene and exaggerated writing style. With
Edgar Allen Poe being a form of influence and admiration in Ginsberg's eyes, it's understandable to see where he gets his inspiration. Allen Ginsberg's
work of literature is important because it challenges mainstream societal values and gives a voice to those who struggle with repression by a
patriarchal agenda. Howl, Allen Ginsberg's best–known poem was his most popular and most controversial work of literature. This poem is separated
into three different parts. The title Howl is in reference to protest and cry for all exploitation and repression. The poet asks the reader to "cry against
capitalism" (Howl 7–8). Ginsberg was a headstrong social and political activist during his time. He related to the free spirited hippie generation and
the make love, not war movement. He also revolted against mainstream American culture as a way to challenge other civilian's mindsets. Calling
"Howl" a story isn't accurate, its more Ginsberg describing his environment and his subjects on paper. The first line begins with, "I saw the best minds
of my generation destroyed by madness...."(Ginsberg Howl 1). The minds that he is writing about are that of his fellow friends, acquaintances and

William Carlos Williams : An Influential Poet
Modernism. Imagism. Objectivism. In the 20th century, many poets were involved in several different cultural and literary movements that changed
their work. One of these poets impacted by these movements was William Carlos Williams. His rapidly changing work changed for the better and
caused him to become an influential literary figure.
A literary experimenter and innovator,William Carlos Williams, was a busy and hardworking poet. William Carlos Williams was born in Rutherford,
NJ on September 17, 1883. He was introduced to literature and the arts, especially Shakespeare, at a fairly young age. Williams became a doctor and

This poem is only a few words long, but Williams uses very descriptive words and gets the point across to the reader (Williams, Williams Carlos).
Another poem that mirrors Imagism is "This Is Just To Say." This poem talks about a plum in an icebox. Even though it may seem like a silly topic,
the short poem tells a brief story and leaves the reader thinking with many questions (This Is Just To Say). Lastly, Objectivism is very similar to
Imagism. The main difference is that Objectivist poetry involves personal and romantic feelings unlike Imagism. Williams work became even more
popular while Objectivism was developing because of his poetry involving his thoughts and feelings. (William Carlos Williams). One of his poems
that reflects upon Objectivism is "Thursday." This poem is short and focuses on one topic just like Imagist literature, but it involves his personal
feelings about his dreams in his life (Thursday). Overall, Modernism reconstructed Williams writing style. William Carlos Williams had a very
unique style of writing. His poems are extremely short, but they paint a vivid picture in your head. Separated from tradition, Williams was a an
experimenter who got creative with language and the form of his work. He often focused his writing on one object instead of telling a story.
(Imagism). For example, the poem "The Red Wheelbarrow" focuses on one object and one object only, a red

Literary Analysis Of Revenge In The Veldt By Ray Bradbury
The short story the Veldt by Ray Bradbury reveals that revenge is the key to most people's problems if there isn't a solution. Early in the story we
learn that the children have an issue with their father closing the nursery. The author uses characterization as the literary element in the story to show
how the character develops. George, the father of Peter and Wendy is giving Peter recognition and explaining how he is highly intelligent. While
George takes pride in his son, he doesn't realize that soon his son will turn on him. George says "He's a wise one for ten. That I.Q. of his–" (5)
Bradbury uses this characterization to explain to the reader how smart Peter. George explains how his son could fix machinery even though he is at a
very young age. As days pass George realizes that his children's attitude changes toward him and his wife. His children's attitude became more
suspicious and secretive. "We've given the children everything they ever wanted. Is this our reward– secrecy, disobedience?" The author is trying to
show the reader the actions that have happened since George thought that his children were intelligent which was correct but there intelligence was used
against him. The children used their intelligence during the entrance of George into, the nursery as he found some of his lost items such as his wallet as
he was thinking what had brought it here, he told his kids about it but they kept denying everything he said which led the kids convince him. As
George keeps thinking about the moment they had with the kids that was suspicious which led him to a conclusion that his children might be mentally
ill. As the Nursery was used for the children to release their anger and anxieties, but the scenery of Africa was so wild that the father thought that the
children needed medical attention. The father's thoughts about the Nursery "except that I'm beginning to be sorry we bought that room for the
children. If children are neurotic at all, a room like that –" The author is trying to make the reader understand the sickness Peter and Wendy are in
which then concludes what the father was thinking of and why he was thinking of giving medical assistance to his children. The father tells the
children that he

The Development Of The Psyche
As a child, people are in the most delicate phase of life. They are a freshly budded lily, absorbing all the light, moisture, and nutrients possible in order
to bloom into an adult. These essential fertilizers predominantly come from their parents, who nurture them into the person they will become. This unit
commonly consists of a mother and father. The mother a symbol of intimacy and maternal comfort, and the father a symbol of strength and stature. The
balance of this yin and yang is extremely important for the development of the psyche. Having a fatherless childhood or a childhood with a degenerate
father is common in today's society. The effects of not having a father figure ripple through childhood and lay roots in the subconscious. There are two
types of a fatherless childhood. Some grow up without a father in their life entirely, without any knowledge of who he may have been. Others grow up
with a father in their life that does more destructive impact than constructive impact. Some may say that a destructive parent is still a parent to their
child, but arguably a parent without constructive development to their spawn is not a parent at all. This hollow in a child's life leaves a space for
destructive energy to breed. Many challenges adults face within themselves reflect back into their childhood. The subconscious is the seed left over
from the lily's bloom, which died along with childhood innocence. The fight to gain back said innocence is the ultimate struggle.

Essay about Film Versions of Shakespeare Comedies
Film Versions of Shakespeare Comedies
Shakespearean plays are complex, intricate pieces of work in which a diverse range of interpretations and readings can be made. This is particularly
true of his comedies, where the light–hearted humour is often offset by darker, more serious undertones. In adapting these comedies it is for the
director – in the cinematic context – to decide how to interpret the play and which elements are privileged and which are suppressed. This variance in
interpretation is exemplified in comparing two of the more recent cinematic adaptations of Shakespeare's comedies, Trevor Nunn's Twelfth Night and
Kenneth Branagh's A Much Ado About Nothing ['Much Ado']. Although both films can to an extent be seen as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This action is the first imperative step that leads to the undoing of several characters, primarily Malvolio. It is essentially Malvolio's ultimate
narcissism that allows the other characters to easily plot his demise .
Nunn's adaptation of Feste is not dissimilar to Malvolio with his interpretation of the 'professional clown' proving persuasive because the fool
presents wise insights into the complicated web of love that many principal characters become entwined with. His ability to suggest that love is a
game, that lovers often love to love, and that love can be almost blind, are important themes to the attraction and comedy of the film. However
Nunn utilises Feste above the scope of the comedic, with his poignant insights reminding the audience that this film is in fact dealing with serious
issues and at times, the deeper, disturbing, side of love. In Ben Kingsley's moving performance, Feste becomes an outsider as a man who lives
alone away from Olivia's house yet somehow witnesses all that occurs amongst the characters and provides some telling insights. This is illustrated
when he shows Olivia why "take away the fool" could mean take away the lady," arguing not only to save his job but also out of a deep compassion for
Olivia's grief over her brother's death, and a desire to show why she need not commit

"The Fundamentals of Caring" is a film about Ben, a care–worker who looks after a young boy named Trevor, and the events that proceed through their
growing relationship. Ben is a retired writer and his wife is trying to divorce him, likely because of the death of their son, which occurred three years
prior. Ben failed to park the car properly, causing the the gear of the car to shift and roll back, killing his son . Elsa, Trevor's extremely over–protective
mother, has hired Ben because of her long hours of work as a bank clerk. Trevor is an eighteen year old boy with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, so he
is restricted to a wheelchair and requires around the clock care due to his disease. Ben convinces Elsa that Trevor needs to see the world, and since
Trevor is obsessed with American roadside attractions, Elsa hesitantly agrees. (citation)While on their way to see the deepest pit in the world, they stop
at a diner and meet a young woman named Dot who is twenty–one. During their adventure Trevor and Dot end up having romantic feelings for each
other, which leads to a kiss initiated by Dot as she says goodbye and promises to keep in touch. Ben quits as Trevor's caregiver but the two stay very
close friends. The movie ends with Ben finishing his novel about Trevor, while saying that he went to go visit Trevor on his twenty–first birthday,
seeing Trevor lying presumably dead on the floor with the caregiver crying next to him. However, Trevor was only faking and the caregiver quit

Analysis Of The Story ' Folie A Deux ' By William Trevor
The story "Folie a Deux" by William Trevor explores the complexities of curiosity and maturation. The narrator, inspired by literary devices, details an
important passage of the story, which portrays lunchtime conversations between Anthony, his father, and Miss Davally, and follows with the
correspondence between Miss Davally and Wilby's mother – where all involve the exchange of information. The passage is meaningful because it
demonstrates an appraisal of information, and its impact on progress. Ultimately, the story suggests that information is arbitrarily powerful, and that
genuine maturation is only fostered through nurtured curiosity.
The portrayal of lunchtime conversations suggests information is invaluably powerful and depends on human connections to establish a worldview.
While everyone is eating, the narrator describes that "much other information (is) passed on at the lunch table", and details the questioned functionality
of "aeroplanes", "time", and "spiders" (132). The narrator's description of how information is situated at "the lunch table" implicitly suggests human
connections to be an important survival need, like nourishment or "lunch", and infers their interdependency. Through the phrase "much other
information was passed on", the narrator conveys the abundantly–distinct richness of information, which is inferred by the connotations "much" and
"other". The description that information "was passed on" at the table signifies the table to be the center of

William Carlos Williams 's Poem ' Marriage '
Poems are the best to express thoughts to readers, many writers choose to write poems to speak their feelings which plain ordinary texts will not do.
Three poems have special ideas about marriage, they are: "Marriage" by William Carlos Williams, "Marriea Love" by Kuan Tao
–Sheng, and an
untitled one by Apache Song. All three of them have a central idea ofmarriage; two people are one individual after marriage, one cannot separate from
the other one. These poems are short but they carry deep morals about marriage. They have a common characteristics where they all visualize the
bonding between the couple into things we feel comfortable about. There are three main aspects of poems – content, structure, and tone – I would
discuss about how the authors uses similar writing styles to bring out the common idea behind. All contents of the three poems are very visual. In
"Marriage," Williams describes men and women as streams and fields and in "Marriea Love," Kuan describes them as clays. Similarly, Song describes
the relationship between married couples as solutions to problem, like, shelter for rain and warmth for coldness. Visualizing helps reader to
understand the author's point of view on marriage. We can see that all three of them implies that, after a couple is married they become one individual
and should not and cannot be separated. "Marriage" says that men and women as streams and fields. We often see them appear very closely and one
another cannot be absent. He

Similarities Between Macbeth And The Destructors

  • 1. Similarities Between Macbeth And The Destructors William Shakespeare and Graham Greene both present characters as being both heroes and villains in the tale of the tragedy of Macbeth and the short novel of The Destructors. Greene portrays ordinary people who have both the capacity of good and evil. Macbeth is different as we have the character of Macbeth who doesn't have a clear cut good or evil, as throughout the novel his character slowly decays into a villain from being our protagonist. In Macbeth, the first time being switched from the shadowy world of witches to the physical world of battle we are presented with the characters of Ross and the Captain. Shakespeare uses these characters as devices to provide us with an insight into the character of Macbeth heroism. The Captain, covered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We can see this when he say's 'Old misery' Mike said, hes on his way "But why?" T. said. "He told me. . . ." He protested with the fury of the child he had never been, "It isn't fair. This passage shows a glimpse of emotion, which we haven't seen before from Trevor. He is becoming aggravated due to the arrival of Old Misery. This highlights what the destruction of the house means to him, as if it is his piece of artwork and that Trevor feels that all destruction is a form of creation. This could also apply to other aspects of The Destructors, as the destruction of Blackies gang resulted in the creation of Trevor's gang. By Greene making the narrator say 'the fury of the child he had never been' leaves another hint into the roots of his villainy, growing up without a childhood would result in lack of understanding of people's feelings, and therefore could be the cause of him having not a shred of guilt. What Greene was trying to achieve here was to portray his heartlessness villainy by showing his merciless actions towards this old man who trusted him which reveals the delinquent villain inside ... • 2. Love's Labour's Lost Love's Labour's Lost The Elizabethans thought of it merely as "a wittie and pleasant comedie" ; Samuel Johnson remarked that "all the editors have concurred to censure [it]" ; and William Hazlitt opined, "If we were to part with any of the author's comedies, it should be this." It was not until well into the twentieth century that Love's Labour's Lost really came into its own, and this fact alone may be enough to make a case for it as Shakespeare's most forward–looking play. It is its ending in particular, an unexpectedly grim conclusion in which nothing is actually concluded, that has appealed to modern sensibilities and made Love's Labour's Lost the Shakespeare play for the twentieth century. Trevor Nunn makes this point emphatically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nunn's new production, however, breaks this tradition, radically altering the effect envisioned by Shakespeare with the addition of a mere 30 seconds or so of extra–textual material at the beginning. John Peter's description perfectly captures the feeling of the opening moments: "We are in a forest clearing. The darkened Olivier stage is dominated by a bare beech, huge and ancient. Soldiers rush on. Explosions, gunfire. This is the first world war. An officer...gets badly wounded. But this is Love's Labour's Lost, is it not? A comedy, surely?" This is indeed the reaction of the audience as MarcadГ©, identifiable by his traditional all–black costume, comes onstage (in the text, his first and only appearance is his surprise entrance at the end) and says portentously, "The words of Mercury are harsh after the songs of Apollo" (in the text, this line is also at the end and is Armado's). A kneeling officer looks soulfully off into space, and the scene changes: foliage appears on the tree, the lighting comes up to suggest dappled sunlight, merry–looking people in Edwardian costume cross the stage, and the first scene in the text finally begins, revealing the kneeling officer to be Berowne and Shakespeare's entire play to be a flashback. This added and adapted prologue, however brief, is quite significant: it lets the audience know from the very start that all will not be well at the end, thus covering the entire rest of the play with a cloud ... • 3. Comparison Of Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus Pieter Brueghel was a 16th century Netherlandish Renaissance painter who completed "Landscape with the Fall of Icarus" in 1558. His painting was inspired by the ancient Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus. William Carlos Williams, a Puerto–Rican American poet, wrote a poem inspired by Brueghel's work in 1960 similarly titled "Landscape with the Fall of Icarus". There is a common theme displayed in both works which both execute and establish this theme with different visual and literary connotations and strengths using differing amounts of information provided through their artistic mediums. which create an effectiveness with the end–all goal being to explain that time will pass by regardless of what is going on in an individual's world even if they want it all to stop at once. The painting lays a scene of a landscape of an Island territory and several different people and animals. In the eye catching foreground "we see a farmer herding a large amount of animals" their focus is darted to the left of the painting. we will come to learn that all mentioned figures and objects in the painting have a visual focus to facing to the left, as our eyes draw towards the right and farther out we notice off in the "distance you see an image of the fisherman off to the coast (a pair of legs submersed in water as well not too far off). In the north you see a ship that seems to dwarf them both in size and space." With this we can draw the connection that this relates to the idea that time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Twelfth Night Comparative Essay The recurring themes in Shakespeare's comedies are gender identity, social order, politics, and transformation. The characters in his comedies range from the very basic, such as Katherine and Petruchio in Taming of the Shrew, to more complex characters, like Feste in Twelfth Night. The three films, Taming of the Shrew,Much Ado About Nothing and Twelfth Night are very diverse in the handling of these themes and the characters of the plays. This diversity of theme and characters is owed to the films' directors, Franco Zeffirelli, Kenneth Branagh, Joss Whedon and Trevor Nunn. The directors give a different perspective to Shakespeare's actual text and we, as the audience, see Shakespeare's characters differently because of the film medium and theses directors' vision. In the film ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She writes, "perspective staging reproduces through illusion and the "depth of field – the holding and closing the audience's eye brings the illusion to the audience of joining the characters on stage" (155). Belsey's analysis of this vanishing point explains Branagh's opening scene in Much Ado About Nothing is a painting that eventually fades to an actual hillside where the play begins and Beatrice is reading poetry to the assembled picnickers. We, as the audience, go from being an observer to being involved in the story. In the Twelfth Night, Nunn employs a different technique as he switches between scenes of his actors to create parallels in action and characters. For example, when Malvolio is prattling on in the dungeon saying he is not mad, and Sebastian in the house wondering if he has gone mad because Olivia is so taken with him and she is a stranger to him. In this instance, Nunn's shifting of scenes in the film gives the audience context to Shakespeare's complex ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. King Lear Comparison Essay Originally written at the start of the 17th century, William Shakespeare's play, King Lear, has become one of his most famed works. The tragedy was first adapted for the screen in 1909 as a black and white, silent film. Almost a century later in 2008, King Lear was once more brought to life through director Trevor Nunn's film adaptation of the same name. Staring Ian McKellen as King Lear, the film adaptation is based on the 2007 production of the play by the renowned Royal Shakespeare Company. King Lear is a story of betrayal, loss and madness and to accurately convey this while simultaneously distinguishing it from other screen renditions, Nunn alters the setting and utilises the colours of the costumes and backdrop to symbolise the virtues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Characters with titles that derive from English place names, such as the Duke of Cornwall, indicate that the film takes place in England. Also, many scenes occur on heaths which can be commonly found throughout England but rarely in Russia. However, the costumes worn by male characters, especially Lear's scarlet tunic, closely resemble those worn by the Tsar and his high–ranking officials. Additionally, Lear's 100 knights have also been transformed into 100 singing, squat–dancing Cossacks which further reinforces the films connection to Imperial Russia as Cossacks are an ethnic group known for their historic loyalty to the Tsar. The inclusion of rifles as well as glasses suggests that King Lear is set in the 1800's which coincides with both Victorian England and Imperial Russia. Although using elements from two eras may confuse some viewers, historical and geographical references are negligible to most audience members, allowing them to generate their own opinion about the setting. At the same time, the setting makes Nunn's production unique. Since 1909, King Lear has been adapted for the screen on numerous occasions with the majority of these adaptations retaining the original setting of pre–Christian England. By drastically changing the setting, it distinguishes Nunn's King Lear from other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He was shy and had no ambitions working at Hobson's shoe shop at the bottom of the chain. At the end of the play he was ambitious, married and the joint owner of Hobsons shop. The audience sympathises with Willie the first time he appears on stage because he 'only comes half way up the trap door'. This is because of his social standing and he feels that he is not worthy to speak to Hobson and the 'upper class people'. As the play progresses Willie acquires a greater sense of confidence. To this point it seems that Hobson is not content and has no intentions of speaking to them again. However, proceeds to say, 'but I've shaken your husbands hand and that's a sign for you, the milks split and ill not cry'. Willie has now returned to his initial opinion and it seems he has approved of the wedding even though he doesn't endorse the idea. This gives Willie additional confidence. Willie visits the local pub, 'The Moonrakers' on a daily basis with his friends even though the doctor has told him that he has 'drunk himself within six months of an early grave'. The doctors' advice to Hobson is to 'stay out of the pub and to get a woman back into the house and to take the doctors prescription'. Hobson replies by saying 'I'm particular to what I put into my stomach' and 'you ask me to give up my reasonable refreshment'. "Get the plates out Jimmy," mom ordered. I grabbed the plates off the counter top and brought everything to the table. We each took a piece of bread out of the bag and spread the peanut butter till it was smooth on the bread. Then took the grape jelly and slobbered that on and took a shark bite out of it. Othello, By William Shakespeare 'Othello' was a tragedy of incomprehension at the deepest level of human dealings as no one in the play came to an understanding of himself or any of the surrounding characters. The play 'Othello' by William Shakespeare focused on tragedy through the anguish of the main character 'Othello' which lead to the suffering and death of numerous characters including himself. Iago's hatred towards 'the Moor' and his revelation that he was not what he was, was the earliest proof to the audience that in fact Iago was holding a facade on his entire character. This also represented Roderigo's obliviousness of Iago's words to the audience. During openings to the play 'Othello' in 1990 by Trevor Nunn, began with a half–lit empty stage. In contextual reference, 'The moor' was a racial term which was categorically used for Africans or those of Arab descent during the 1600s. In turn, this contradicted the way 'Honest Iago' dealt with 'the Moor' in his presence. This was evident in the rhetorical question "Good my lord, pardon me;...Utter my thoughts! Why say they are vile and false?"(Act 3, Scene 3). The ironic stature of the quote displayed to the audience the deceptive games Iago was playing with the characters of 'Othello'. In reference to Iago's character, critic William Hazlitt had stated that Iago was an extreme instance of "diseased intellectual activity with an almost perfect indifference to moral good or evil rather a decided preference for the latter". This linked to Iago's 'motiveless malignity' as he attempted to justify the deceptive plans he was carrying out in the play which is represented in his soliloquy "But for my ... Personal Case Analysis: Working Together In Groups Case Analysis MGS Working together in a group can be overwhelming due to the different personalities and work habits that team members bring along with them. It takes managerial knowledge and leadership traits to see the skills in each member and bring them together to achieve a common purpose. At the beginning of the semester when we were all assigned our groups I had my judgements about the individuals with whom I would be working with for the rest of the term. When I first met Logan, my first impression of him was he was a laid back guy and very introverted. He came off as someone who would be a minimal contribution to the group and rely heavily on the team. Learning that his Keirsey temperament profile awarded him guardian status was a complete shock to me. The characteristics of a guardian were the complete opposite from my judgement of him. • 13. Analysis Of Caricature Of Humanity In 'The Runner' Caricature of Humanity "The Runner" by DeLillo tells of a self–absorbed runner who is witnessing a mysterious kidnapping without caring about it. The runner is a perfect portrayal of uncaring citizens, who lack empathy with others unless they are directly connected to them. While running, the narrator witnesses a car pulling onto the lawn, this is odd but he ignores it, it appears he does not care about other people, he prefers to continue running. The narrator notices that "a car came off the road, bouncing onto the sloped lawn."(47) The runner is seeing a car come off the road onto the grass in the park where he is running. Since the narrator is not stopping to investigate he appears self–absorbed and selfishly uncurious. The runner's neighbor explains she, "heard the car when it came over the curb. More or less bang on the grass. The father gets out and takes the little boy."(49) His neighbor just witnessed a child being kidnapped, although she does not know anyone involved, she assumes the kidnapper is the boy's father. The runner seems disinterested in both the kidnapping and his neighbor's opinion. He seems to feel the kidnapping shouldn't concern him; he wasn't kidnapped, and he didn't know who was. Why should he care? What the runner doesn't realize is that this affects him emotionally and physically. This is a community concern. Whether or not the father was the kidnapper the entire area becomes concerned with safety. The runner, without thinking, crushes his neighbor's ideal situation even though he does not seem to care about the kidnapping. The narrator questions his neighbor and hears her response "You can't be sure, can you? I saw them both and I saw the child." (50)When asked if she was sure the father was the kidnapper the neighbor states she saw the mother, the child, and the kidnapper. This implies that she does not know the real situation, but is merely projecting the most ideal situation. The viewpoint of the neighbor is interesting because our main character disagrees with the idea that the father was just taking his child. Although this is the ideal situation for both the child and the bystanders the runner takes a cynical view. This most likely means he would rather ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Literary Analysis Of 'The Widow's Lamnt In Springtime' William Carlos Williams was from Rutherford, New Jersey, born in 1883. By trade, he was both a doctor and writer. Williams published poetry, novels, and essays in small magazines. Williams started as an imagist movement poet, "which emphasized simplicity, clarity of expression, and precision through the use of exacting visual images" (poets.org). He later began to write more about the life of everyday people. His poem, "The Widow's Lament in Springtime" follows this writing style. The poem "The Widow's Lament in Springtime" is a poem about a women who has lost her husband of thirty five years. Williams writes in the voice of a grieving woman instead of in his own voice. Now that her husband has died, the widow cannot find joy in her yard that she used to love. The widow may even be considering suicide. Williams, writing in free verse, writes a metaphor comparing the grief of a widow to her blooming yard in the springtime setting a tone of great sadness for the widow. The title itself gives us important clues about this poem. From the beginning before even reading the first line of the poem, we know that it will be a sad story. The widow being someone who has experienced a loss and lament is a word used for passionate grief and sorrow. Springtime is a time of growth and rebirth, the affirming of new life. Williams' title may lead us to believe that the widow is in the early stages of life without her husband and the early stages of grief. This may be her first spring without her husband. She is exploring the overwhelming feelings of grief over losing her husband, comparing her grief to the new life or blooming of her yard. The widow begins by telling us "Sorrow is my own yard" (Reed). She, the widow is comparing the sorrow and grief that she feels with her yard. She takes ownership of her pain in the phrase "my own". Springtime is usually a time of renewal and growth, but for the widow it is a time of sorrow and pain, deep sadness because her husband is not there with her this year. The new growth of her yard just "closes round me this year". Something that is closing around you may make you feel trapped, or uncomfortable. This year her yard brings her feeling of pain. Two years later I have a better understanding of the actual play and while I still enjoy the 2009 production the 1982 production directed by Jonathan Miller presents the words of William Shakespeare in a more accurate and period specific manor. From the opening scenes of Trevor Nunn's 2009 production of King Lear, the audience is made aware of a dark, ominous cloud that is about to envelope them. The use of low lights and spotlights allows for a slow augmentation of the yet to come tragic aspects of the play. The minimal use of props and background sets allows his audience to focus on the characters and their dialogue. One of Desmond Tutu's most famous quotes was: "I am puzzled about which Bible people are reading when they suggest religion and politics don't mix". He knew that God was political; this was because when God rescued the slaved from Egypt he led them to freedom in the Promised Land. Politics have lead in the past to the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, and when this happened the prophet's spoke out, so Christians today should test government policies against Christian teaching. Like Desmond Tutu, Trevor Huddleston also stated that Christianity was totally opposed to the system in South Africa: "Christina s are not only commanded to love. We are commanded to hate what is evil, and nothing is more evil than apartheid". Trevor Huddleston and Desmond Tutu had been friends ever since Desmond Tutu was a small child. Schwarz lists ground rules for effective groups a: "test assumptions and inferences, share relevant information, use specific examples and agree on what important words mean, Explain your reasoning and intent, focus on interests, not positions, combine advocacy and inquiry, jointly design next steps and ways to test disagreements, discuss undiscussable issues, and use a decision–making rule that generates the level of commitment needed" (GROUND RULES, p. 2). While the leaders in the films don't list each of these by number, they focus on the key rules that will help their team succeed. The biggest rule that the films focused on was the emphasis on interests, not positions. Each of the leaders within the teams had to redirect the focus of the group to their end goal and not how they felt about each other to get there. Each coach or team leader also faced issues regarding diversity and the need to discuss undiscussable issues. Schwarz describes undiscussable issues as, "ones that are relevant to the group's task but that group members believe they can't discuss openly in the group without some negative consequences" (page 7 GROUND RULES). Specifically, in Glory Road and Remember the Titans, the teams had to discuss their issues of prejudice and racism. In these instances, the split between races could cause the teams to divide and fail when trying to reach their team goal. In the film Miracle, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Defamiliarization In William Carlos Williams's To A Poor... What do words actually mean? When we are reading, many of us don't actually stop to think about the meaning of each word (unless the word is unfamiliar), instead we just assume what it means–we read automatically. Looking at the poem, "To A Poor Old Woman" by William Carlos Williams, we see the Shklovsky's concept of "defamiliarization" in use. When we look at Shklovsky's concept, "The technique of art is to make objects 'unfamiliar' to make forms difficult, to increase the difficulty and length of perception because the process of perception is an aesthetic end in itself and must be prolonged" (Rivkin and Ryan 9). Using this same concept, looking at the first stanza of "To a Poor Old Woman," we see the way that the stanza was structured in a way to make it unfamiliar. The author splits the sentences up where they normally wouldn't be split up, so that gives that sense of unfamiliarity, so we begin to question what the words actually mean. If a person attempts to read it as a normal sentence, we would see that someone is eating a plum, the street is a paper bag, and something is in her hand. The reason I believe the lines are broken up in a "weird" way is because it's trying to give that sense of unfamiliarity to get an audience to focus on what this stanza is really trying to say. Looking at the second stance, we see the repetition of "They taste good to her" written in different forms. This repetition gives an unfamiliar sense because each time it repeats, it gives off ... Essay about William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night: Feste Trevor Nunn's (1996) adaptation of Twelfth Night illustrates the complexity of Feste's character and how important he is to the overall play. Ben Kingsley, the actor, presents Feste as sympathetic and gentle choric figure. It is Feste who allows the audience to see the films respect for the original play, and the existing issues within it. This includes the defencelessness of women, and the attractive, but dangerous, qualities of altering one's true sexual identity. His title of "fool" gives him employment in order to survive, and nothing more. However, as stated above, it does not describe who he is truly by mind, heart and soul. • 33. Analysis Of Allen Ginsberg's Howl "Hold back the edges of your gowns, Ladies, we are going through hell," (Sullivan 1) as William Carlos Williams put it, in introducing the first edition of Allen Ginsberg's Howl. Most famously known for Howl, Ginsberg was recognized for his obscene and exaggerated writing style. With Edgar Allen Poe being a form of influence and admiration in Ginsberg's eyes, it's understandable to see where he gets his inspiration. Allen Ginsberg's work of literature is important because it challenges mainstream societal values and gives a voice to those who struggle with repression by a patriarchal agenda. Howl, Allen Ginsberg's best–known poem was his most popular and most controversial work of literature. This poem is separated into three different parts. The title Howl is in reference to protest and cry for all exploitation and repression. The poet asks the reader to "cry against capitalism" (Howl 7–8). Ginsberg was a headstrong social and political activist during his time. He related to the free spirited hippie generation and the make love, not war movement. He also revolted against mainstream American culture as a way to challenge other civilian's mindsets. Calling "Howl" a story isn't accurate, its more Ginsberg describing his environment and his subjects on paper. Even though it may seem like a silly topic, the short poem tells a brief story and leaves the reader thinking with many questions (This Is Just To Say). Lastly, Objectivism is very similar to Imagism. The main difference is that Objectivist poetry involves personal and romantic feelings unlike Imagism. Williams work became even more popular while Objectivism was developing because of his poetry involving his thoughts and feelings. (William Carlos Williams). One of his poems that reflects upon Objectivism is "Thursday." This poem is short and focuses on one topic just like Imagist literature, but it involves his personal feelings about his dreams in his life (Thursday). Overall, Modernism reconstructed Williams writing style. William Carlos Williams had a very unique style of writing. His poems are extremely short, but they paint a vivid picture in your head. Separated from tradition, Williams was a an experimenter who got creative with language and the form of his work. He often focused his writing on one object instead of telling a story. (Imagism). • 35. Literary Analysis Of Revenge In The Veldt By Ray Bradbury The short story the Veldt by Ray Bradbury reveals that revenge is the key to most people's problems if there isn't a solution. Early in the story we learn that the children have an issue with their father closing the nursery. The author uses characterization as the literary element in the story to show how the character develops. George, the father of Peter and Wendy is giving Peter recognition and explaining how he is highly intelligent. While George takes pride in his son, he doesn't realize that soon his son will turn on him. George says "He's a wise one for ten. That I.Q. of his–" (5) Bradbury uses this characterization to explain to the reader how smart Peter. George explains how his son could fix machinery even though he is at a very young age. As days pass George realizes that his children's attitude changes toward him and his wife. His children's attitude became more suspicious and secretive. "We've given the children everything they ever wanted. Is this our reward– secrecy, disobedience?" The author is trying to show the reader the actions that have happened since George thought that his children were intelligent which was correct but there intelligence was used against him. The children used their intelligence during the entrance of George into, the nursery as he found some of his lost items such as his wallet as he was thinking what had brought it here, he told his kids about it but they kept denying everything he said which led the kids convince him. As George keeps thinking about the moment they had with the kids that was suspicious which led him to a conclusion that his children might be mentally ill. As the Nursery was used for the children to release their anger and anxieties, but the scenery of Africa was so wild that the father thought that the children needed medical attention. The father's thoughts about the Nursery "except that I'm beginning to be sorry we bought that room for the children. • 36. The Development Of The Psyche As a child, people are in the most delicate phase of life. They are a freshly budded lily, absorbing all the light, moisture, and nutrients possible in order to bloom into an adult. These essential fertilizers predominantly come from their parents, who nurture them into the person they will become. This unit commonly consists of a mother and father. The mother a symbol of intimacy and maternal comfort, and the father a symbol of strength and stature. The balance of this yin and yang is extremely important for the development of the psyche. Having a fatherless childhood or a childhood with a degenerate father is common in today's society. The effects of not having a father figure ripple through childhood and lay roots in the subconscious. There are two types of a fatherless childhood. Some grow up without a father in their life entirely, without any knowledge of who he may have been. Others grow up with a father in their life that does more destructive impact than constructive impact. Some may say that a destructive parent is still a parent to their child, but arguably a parent without constructive development to their spawn is not a parent at all. This hollow in a child's life leaves a space for destructive energy to breed. Many challenges adults face within themselves reflect back into their childhood. The subconscious is the seed left over from the lily's bloom, which died along with childhood innocence. The fight to gain back said innocence is the ultimate struggle. ... Essay about Film Versions of Shakespeare Comedies Film Versions of Shakespeare Comedies Shakespearean plays are complex, intricate pieces of work in which a diverse range of interpretations and readings can be made. This is particularly true of his comedies, where the light–hearted humour is often offset by darker, more serious undertones. In adapting these comedies it is for the director – in the cinematic context – to decide how to interpret the play and which elements are privileged and which are suppressed. This variance in interpretation is exemplified in comparing two of the more recent cinematic adaptations of Shakespeare's comedies, Trevor Nunn's Twelfth Night and Kenneth Branagh's A Much Ado About Nothing ['Much Ado']. This action is the first imperative step that leads to the undoing of several characters, primarily Malvolio. It is essentially Malvolio's ultimate narcissism that allows the other characters to easily plot his demise . Nunn's adaptation of Feste is not dissimilar to Malvolio with his interpretation of the 'professional clown' proving persuasive because the fool presents wise insights into the complicated web of love that many principal characters become entwined with. His ability to suggest that love is a game, that lovers often love to love, and that love can be almost blind, are important themes to the attraction and comedy of the film. However Nunn utilises Feste above the scope of the comedic, with his poignant insights reminding the audience that this film is in fact dealing with serious issues and at times, the deeper, disturbing, side of love. In Ben Kingsley's moving performance, Feste becomes an outsider as a man who lives alone away from Olivia's house yet somehow witnesses all that occurs amongst the characters and provides some telling insights. • 39. Analysis Of The Story ' Folie A Deux ' By William Trevor The story "Folie a Deux" by William Trevor explores the complexities of curiosity and maturation. The narrator, inspired by literary devices, details an important passage of the story, which portrays lunchtime conversations between Anthony, his father, and Miss Davally, and follows with the correspondence between Miss Davally and Wilby's mother – where all involve the exchange of information. The passage is meaningful because it demonstrates an appraisal of information, and its impact on progress. Ultimately, the story suggests that information is arbitrarily powerful, and that genuine maturation is only fostered through nurtured curiosity. The portrayal of lunchtime conversations suggests information is invaluably powerful and depends on human connections to establish a worldview. While everyone is eating, the narrator describes that "much other information (is) passed on at the lunch table", and details the questioned functionality of "aeroplanes", "time", and "spiders" (132). The narrator's description of how information is situated at "the lunch table" implicitly suggests human connections to be an important survival need, like nourishment or "lunch", and infers their interdependency. All three of them have a central idea ofmarriage; two people are one individual after marriage, one cannot separate from the other one. These poems are short but they carry deep morals about marriage. They have a common characteristics where they all visualize the bonding between the couple into things we feel comfortable about. There are three main aspects of poems – content, structure, and tone – I would discuss about how the authors uses similar writing styles to bring out the common idea behind.
