Social Class in Great Expectations
In Great Expectations, Pip changed his social class immensely. Pip did not understand how a poor
family could be happy. Pip thought that social class was everything in life. He also thought that money
was very important. In reality, it turns out that money and social rank do not matter in life. What really
matters is being connected and having relationships with family and friends. Pip finds that out the hard
way. In Great Expectations, Pip is exposed to many different social classes, he acts very differently, he
finds out how lonely he becomes, and how family and friends mean everything in life. Early in life,
Pip grew up in a poor and kind of lower class family. As a young child, Pip did not understand how
poor people could be so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pip ...gave me the bread and meat without looking at me, as insolently as if I were a dog in disgrace. I
was so humiliated, hurt, spurned, offended, angry, sorry..., (Dickens 64). Pip is disconcerted and
depressed when Estella does that to him in the beginning of the novel. Pip basically does the same
thing to Joe. Not with pleasure, though I was bound to him by so many ties; no; with considerable
disturbance, some mortification, and a keen sense of incongruity. If I could have kept him away by
paying money, I certainly would have paid money, (Dickens 229). Joe is disrespected and he is
mortified by the way Pip treats him. Pip becomes very forlorn while he is in London. Once he is in
London, he does not have many friends like he did before. This really changes the way he thinks in
life. Money changes people and it certainly has a consequence on Pip as it is shown in the novel.
Social class does not really shape Pip into a reputable young man. That is so because he thinks that he
is too good for Joe and Biddy. Not the entire London trip is appalling. Pip learns some really good
skills in London. He learns how to be a gentleman and he learns correct table manners. It is considered
that you must be better educated, in accordance with your altered position, and that you will be alive
to the importance and necessity of at once entering on that advantage, (Dickens 186). London, Mr.

Essay about Cultural Expectations in a Selection of Texts
In every society that I know of, there are cultural expectations. Literature tends to follow the same
expectations. We have had quite a few stories in this class where we focused on cultural expectations.
Rip in Rip Van Winkle, Editha and George in Editha and Major Molineux in My Kinsman, Major
Molineux are all victims of cultural expectations.
Let me start with Rip Van Winkle. This story actually takes place in two different time periods. Before
Rip fell asleep, he was living in the pre colonial era of the United States. He was expected to work and
take care of his family. The great error in Rip s composition was an insuperable aversion to all kinds
of profitable labor. (943) He had no qualms about work its self but he ... Show more content on

I feel that George is a victim of cultural expectations whereas Editha is influenced by it but she is not
victimized. Editha is a proud member of society and she wants what every other woman wants, a
strong husband who will fight for his country. She wants George to go and fight. She writes a letter
telling him that she loves him but the man I marry must love his country first of all. . . (1448) George
is expected to love his country above all and want to fight to protect it. He does not believe in the
cause of the Spanish American War. He is torn between his love for Editha and his disgust for the war.
George signs up for the war in a drunken stupor and still has the presence of mind to mock the war
with witty sarcasm as he walks the street near Editha s house. He obviously does not have any desire
to fight as he says: What a thing it is to have a country that can t be wrong, but if it is, is right anyway!
Editha does not even listen to what he is saying; she just hands him the letter and tells him to read it
after he starts. She could not be happier. George is one of the earliest people to die in the war; he is a
victim of cultural expectations. One can argue that Editha is a victim as well but I do not buy it. She
wears black in her mourning period but I think she feel honored that George died for her. I think I am
giving her too much credit when I say honored. She enjoys the attention that she gets after having

Oral History Annotations
Lyrics Annotations Oral history happens within communities, and it gives people opportunities. To
learn about human interaction, develop a language and taking action.
Oral history can often give you a better idea about culture and people because there is less open to
interpretation than a written document. Language is one of the biggest parts of human language and
our language and communication skills would be much less advanced without our oral histories.
Speaking the information of truth and declaration, passing it down from generation to generation. Like

The Ocean Research Paper
Since the Ocean is the largest biome in the world, the climate is from 40 degrees fahrenheit to more
than 100 degrees. The average temperature is 39 degrees fahrenheit, but it is much warmer near the
Equator where the sun rays can hit the ocean and make it warmer. The coldest is in the North and the
South Poles where the water is close to freezing, also known as glaciers, because sunlight isn t directly
hitting it with it s sun rays. The ocean can also be harsh, because of ocean currents. The ocean currents
create big hurricanes and typhoons. Although the climate can ve extreme it has little effect on life.
Most life forms have adapted to the ocean. Plants have also adapted to deep places where sunlight

There are 5 main types of oceans: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and the Southern ocean. The
Pacific ocean separate Asia from the Americas. The Pacific is the biggest ocean on Earth. The Atlantic
separate India from Africa. The Indian Ocean is the second largest ocean on Earth. The Arctic borders
the northern continents and enclose the far North including the North pole. The Arctic is the smallest
ocean in the world. The Southern ocean extends from the coast of Antarctica, and is declared a fifth
world ocean.
There are thousands and thousands of animals that live in the ocean. Some of them have gills to help
them breathe in the ocean, others, like mammals, have to go to the surface and breathe the air. For
example, fish and sharks have gills, and whales and dolphins have holes called a blowhole to breathe
the air. Here are some sea creatures that live in the ocean:
Fish Sharks, swordfish, tuna, clown fish, stingray, flatfish, eels, seahorse, etc.

Explication of the Cogito Essay
Explication of the Cogito
In his Meditations, Rene Descartes attempts to prove the existence and reality of himself and things
external to himself. In order to fulfill such a feat, Descartes decides to doubt all that he knows, for he
knows not whether that can be relied upon. He doubts his knowledge for three main reasons.
For one, he accounts that in dreams, many times he had thought that things external to himself were
real. Also, he had heard people declare pain in limbs that they had lost long ago. After pondering these
two experiences he declared, the chief and most common mistake which is to be found here consists in
my judging that the ideas which are in me resemble, or conform to, things outside me (Descartes 16).

It is a subject object relationship. In order to question something, there must be something to question,
therefore a questionable object exists. And in order for there to be questioning, some thinking thing,
i.e. Descartes, must be doing the questioning, therefore, he exists. Even if the Evil Genius is
constantly deceiving him, that fact that he is being deceived means that he exists. For this reason,
Descartes could not doubt that he was doubting, and thus was able to conclude that this proposition, I
am, I exist, is necessarily true whenever it is put forward by me or conceived in my mind. (17).
To completely prove his point to the skeptics he had to go further, for how could one realize that
he/she is doubting? Descartes answers that this is possible through natural light intuition. By
establishing that he is a thing that, doubts, questions, thinks, affirms, denies, imagines, and perceives,
through examples, he is able to prove how one could realize his/her doubting. Descartes gives us the
example of the wax that is melted, and the people on the street with coats. If the wax melts, one still
perceives such as wax because the wax is merely something extended, flexible, and changeable (21).
On the street, one could see coats and hats, but one determines that one is seeing people. This, like the
wax, is done through judgement alone, by the intellect alone. With this, Descartes posits that an

Pertaining to antibiotic overuse are health providers financial incentives, which encourage antibiotics

individuals with advertisements, as well as pharmacies promoting antibiotics instead of

Aiming to educate individuals and health care providers about resistant bacteria s negative influence
on their long term health, Europe launched a project in 2007: Burden of resistance and disease in
European nations (Burden) since the Department of Health identified the lack of data on antibiotics (as
cited in Kaier et al. 493). In response to this strategy, United Kingdom s Department of Health and
Environment implanted an antimicrobial resistance strategy from March 2013 to 2018 to promote the
responsible antibiotic use for animals and humans and to enhance the guidelines of monitoring
antibiotic use (as cited in While 345). So far, it seems like Europe s strategies are far ahead than North
America who has not yet executed any strategies to reduce antibiotic resistance despite the heavy
usage of antibiotics as mentioned earlier. Finally, new guidelines are in place by Europe s government:
NG15 and KTT9. NG15 states recommendations regarding antibiotic stewardship in organizations,
which includes monitoring antibiotics, identifying resistance patterns, and providing feedback to
prescribers. KTT9 summarizes evidence gained from antibiotic prescribing which emphasizes the
importance of minimizing antibiotic prescribing and using simple generic antibiotics where possible,
thereby reserving broad spectrum antibiotics to treat resistant

An Evaluation Of An Investment Management Process
The Weebly website defines investment as a commitment of funds made in the expectations of some
positive rate of return otherwise emphasizing that expectation of returns in an essential element of an
investment (imsmo.weebly.com). Basically, any business investment strategy comprises of a number
of facets with some additional assistance from professional fund managers, settlement, dealing and the
preparation of reports for clients (imsmo.weebly.com). Investment strategies are broadly divided into
two main categories: real investments and financial investments. Levisaukaite (2010) categorizes real
investments as investments that generally involve some kind of tangible assets such as machinery or
land. On the other hand, financial investments often involve contracts stipulated in paper or presented
in some electronic form such as stocks or bonds. Any investment strategy demands the formulation of
an investment management process. An investment management process stipulates how an investor
should go about in making his/her decisions. The process involves a five step procedure in which the
stages include: Setting an investment policy An analysis and evaluation of investment vehicles The
formation of a diversified investment portfolio Portfolio revision The measurement and evaluation of
portfolio performance. Herein, the paper offers a practical example of an investment process or
activity. Using the above investment procedures, the paper rigorously shows how investors

Social and Economic Development in Colonial Virginia in...
The seventeenth century marked the start of great colonization and immigration to the New World that
was North America. Mainly in on the eastern coast of what is now the United States, England
established colonies on this new land to thrive socially and economically. The English government
readily sent its citizens to America to exploit its abundant source of raw materials and the English
people exponentially came to the colonies to start a new life for themselves and to thrive socially. In
Virginia during the seventeenth century, the geographical attributes in this region allowed the
establishment of the cash crop tobacco to rapidly transform the colony socially and economically.

The land became rapidly exploited and cultivated to produce tobacco. After the establishment of this
cash crop, tobacco was glorified and largely advertised in both the colonies and England. As well as
its large cultivation of tobacco, its connection to what became known as the Chesapeake Bay served as
a prominent economic aspect to Virginia. By mid century, the establishment of indentured servants
had been regulated and used frequently by plantation owners. This being a prominent factor to
Virginia s social development, its downfall and rise of slavery also played a prime role in social
transformation. Bacon s Rebellion in 1676 was the first rebellion in the colonies and it largely resulted
in the hardening of racial lines with slavery. The plantation owners and farmers now saw it as a
dangerous asset to have white indentured servants as workers and also saw having slaves as a much
higher profit. By the establishment of the Virginia colony and its use of producing the tobacco cash
crop, boatloads of slaves were brought to work and profit the upper class plantation owners. What
became known as the Middle Passage became nothing more to the white upper class than profit and
population increase. At the end of the seventeenth century, it was established that 40,000 people lived
in Virginia however the number of slaves brought to the colony was unknown. With the progression

Asthma is the leading cause of illness among elementary aged and adolescence students. The Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states asthma is one of the leading causes of school
absenteeism (2013). Asthma friendly schools are those schools that make the effort to create and
support a safe learning environment for asthmatic students. School nurses have initiated policies and
procedures helping children successfully manage their asthma. Successful school based asthma
programs have been researched looking at the best ways to manage asthma in schools.

The outcome is there are less absenteeism s of the students who receive self management education
from the school nurse versus those students who do not receive self education. Asthmatic children
miss three times as many school days and have 1.7 times the risk of learning disabilities as children
without asthma; therefore, at risk for poor school performance (Portwood Nelson, 2013).
Approximately 9.2 million children younger than 18 years old have been diagnosed with asthma; 3.2
million or approximately 6 percent of children five to seventeen have had an asthma attack within the
year (CDC, 2013). Asthma friendly schools make an effort to create a safe and supportive learning
environment for students with asthma. Research and case studies looked at the best approaches to
manage asthmatic children in schools and found schools that collaborate with asthma care clinicians to
ensure care, schools that have strong administration that support school nurses and support asthma
education for faculty and staff, and schools that support evaluation of school based programs and use
asthma action plans have fewer school absentees (CDC, 2013). School absenteeism may be related to
poor academic performance, is costing to the parent due to lost wages from the inability to work, and
schools receive federal funding for days attended, funding may be decreased (Carpenter, Lachance,
Wilkin, Clark, 2013). As the school nurse and the project leader for this

comprehensive strategy to address vaccine hesitancy. The confusing array of vaccine related
information from media and internet sources, where misinformation becomes intertwined with reliable

Who Is Lady Macbeth s Letter To Her Father
Dearest Beloved Mother and Father, In the short time of serving our mighty King Macbeth, I cannot
say anything but good things. Our majesty is nothing less than the kind, honorable, and noble man one
would expect him to be. On the contrary, however, there was one particular incident which startled me

Ere the day before, King Macbeth hosted the most elegant of all banquets in celebration of his
crowning. All was well; his servants and I tended to the guests with ease. Without any notice, a
mysterious, dark man emerged from the door s shadow and our King shortly excused himself and
proceeded to greet the man, privately. As I neared the end of the table, the two were deep in private

why. Continuing to discuss that His Highness s special quest, Banquo, was unable to attend, chills
filled me and the hairs on my neck as if a small wind leaked into the chamber. The chills turned to
solid ice as our Majesty, AGAIN, cursed and pointed at the invisible being in the chair. His words still
ring inside my head, Take any shape but that, and my firm nerves/Shall never tremble: or be alive
again... Now, however, we were all issued away by Lady Macbeth. Leaving their steaming food
abandoned, Lords empty the room instantly, lacking order, and the servants and I aimed toward our
wing.
Is our majesty s sanity being challenged? It is questioned if he will continue his rule. I fear the worst
dear parents. Pray you will care for yourselves as I fear I will be returning home soon.

workers in the United States. The only way to protect sex workers is to legalize prostitution. In the
following paper, I will attempt to prove that prostitution is a victimless crime and the laws against
prostitution are hurting prostitutes more than they are helping them. If we want prostitutes to remain
safe while earning a living, the only way to achieve this is to legalize prostitution. A common

Their body is owned by them, not the government so it should not be up to anyone else what they do
with their body. A quote from Robin Barton, a Brooklyn legal journalist, said this in her article on the
website The Crime Report; Women are entitled to control over their bodies. Just as they should have
the right to decide whether they want to remain pregnant, women should be able to decide for
themselves whether they want to engage in sexual acts in exchange for money. (Barton). Because
prostitution is a victimless crime, it should be legalized in order to ensure the welfare and prosperity
of sex workers who are trying to make an honest living and protect them while doing so.
People in favor of keeping prostitution illegal often mention that during the time the prostitute is
working, they are being forced to consent or they are being raped. My response to this objection is
this; A consenting man and a consenting woman who agree to fornicate for a price is not rape,
especially if there are laws and regulations protecting the prostitute and proper facilities (like a
brothel) keeping them safe and secure. An interesting comparison to prostitution industry, is the
pornography industry. The only difference between these two is the addition of the camera, along with
two consenting adults and an exchange of money. If prostitution was legalized, the regulation of the
business would ensure that the women who are taking part in this trade are not

Is America Still Relevant Today
America has the ability to make difference in people lives. As said before, people came to the United
States to seeks better lives and more opportunities. I believe the American Dream also means being
equally treated. Equal does not mean we are all the same. We are all different, which is what makes
American the way it is today. We are all human and deserve to be treated as such with dignity and
respect. Although America has a hard time showing that we are all equal, I still believe it is a part of
the American Dream. The United States have run into many brick walls trying to make it seem like all
of us are equal, but it has not been a complete success. Many problems with race and gender is still
relevant today. For example, the Black Lives

Animal Sympathy In Animals
Animal sympathy is the ability of animals to form connections and feel the emotions of other
organisms and to sympathize with their owners and their animal counterparts. Animal sympathy is
rarely considered or just investigated among a limited number of species, such as whales. This is
mostly because the human aspect in the relationship between man and animal is usually mentioned by
the written media as it is more likely easier to understand by the targeted audience. However, it is also
important to understand the emotional viewpoint of animals, especially those which are an integral
part to human existence and society, as it can help foster a better understanding in every human being,
regardless of whether or not he or she interacts with animals.
Before the presence of sympathy in animals can be discussed, one should understand the definition of
the concept of sympathy itself. Sympathy is a rather easy concept to act upon but difficult to decipher
accurately. Through sympathy, one might aid a person in distress for no self benefit but purely due to
good nature. According to philosopher Adam Smith in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, every person
on this Earth has the capability to feel or even automatically be affected by a wave of sympathy at
least once in his or her lifetime. As Smith states, How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are
evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others, and render their
happiness necessary to him,

How Technology Can Enhance His Students Understanding Of...
My CT uses technology in many ways to enhance his students understanding of Math and Science
concepts. I have noticed in my class Science lessons, they often engage in learning through a
document camera presentation, computer lab activity, IPad research, PowerPoints, and educational
videos. My CT tried to use various types of concept delivery to keep his students engaged in the
concept being taught. When the students were learning about lifecycles of animals, the students were
taught with all of the different types of technology listed.
My CT would use a document camera or a PowerPoint to teach his Science lessons. The document
camera allowed the teacher to display opaque worksheets, pictures, and stories to the whole class so
that they were able to follow along. One day, my CT was talking about the life cycle of a sharks and
he wanted to show the class an article from a National Geographic weekly that talked about sharks and
human interactions. The document camera allowed the teacher to display the article and its pictures to
the whole class at once instead of trying to talk about it while the students passed around the magazine
article. By using technology in Science, the teacher was able to keep his students involved in the
content instead of having students become disengaged due to worrying about where the magazine is
and where it s going.
The teacher used videos to get the students to see how an animal progresses through the different
stages of life and how we can

Obsession For Land In The Field, By John B. Kean
The Field is a story written by John B. Kean based on Irish historical events and culture in 1965. At
that period of time, Ireland was enduring the British powers attempts to conquer Irish territory. The
most important, valuable, and symbolic asset that an Irish citizen could own was land. Throughout the
story, the author emphasizes how important it was for an Irish farmer to own land. In the story, the
obsession for land generates a contest between the poor Irish farmer, Bull McCabe, and a rich British
businessman by the name of William. Bull has an immense knowledge in the field of agriculture, as
stated in the story; he transformed a rocky four acres land into a precious and green land. After five
years of hard work, Bull could see all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bull wasn t conformed by William s plan in using the field for industrial purposes. He was especially
angered by having all his efforts to establish a well maintained piece of land go to waste. He illustrates
his anger by saying, Tis a sin to cover grass and clover with concrete (59). He denied the chance of
seeing all his work going worthless and the land destroyed by concrete. He stresses his disapproval of
William s intents by saying, Now this robber comes from nowhere and he s nothing less than a robber
(59). He couldn t accept the fact that a stranger would own a land that he had put so much effort in.
William Dee wasn t an awful man; however he didn t give any credibility to Bull. He was capable of
buying a better land far away from the village but he gave an excuse that his wife was from Bull s
village and she wanted to live there. Finally, Bull never had the intention of killing William. His
intention was only to frighten him in order to make him give up from buying the land. Indeed, Bull
wasn t the one who killed William but, his son Tadgh, who beat him to death. Most people in the bar
witnessed Bull planning to frighten William. Bull said, ...he must be given a fright and a fright he s
goin to get (59). William knew that Bull would do the impossible to stop him from buying the land.

The Role Of Dhs And Its Political Environment
It is the responsibility of the Government to provide security to its people. The Department of
Homeland Security DHS was formed after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Before the attacks,
independent agencies handled homeland security. The DHS was formed to have most of these
agencies work together under one management to secure America.
This paper will argue the role of DHS and its political environment and how it achieves its goals of
protecting America by working within its current environment. The political environment of DHS is
Majoritarian where both the benefits and the costs are spread over most or all of the population and
the agency is able to perform in that certain environment.
Agency:
The creation of DHS was the result of the tragic events of 9/11. The department was formed in 2002
and is a combination of twenty two agencies. Some of the prominent ones are, The Transportation
Security Administration (TSA), U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Service (USCIS). The President of United States appoints the secretary to oversee the
work of DHS.
The Political Environment and the Distribution of Costs and Benefits:
Homeland Security is a highly decentralized activity
The Federal Government cannot do the job of securing America by itself. The state and local
governments and the private sector are all involved in the process. Government s responsibility is to
minimize terrorist threats, reduce the cost of any attacks, and

Compare And Contrast Bud Light And Coor Light
There are many light beers out there in today s market that have their very own unique taste and
exquisite way to advertise their product. Within the light beer market the two well known beers are

the color, and even the social event that s going on. Both Bud Light and Coors Light make excellence
light beers, but an appropriate choice depends on the beer drinker taste, finances, and household
accommodations. In the Bud Light advertisement the colors is the main thing you notice. Its many
different shades of blue with a hint of white which gives off a warm feeling almost like summertime.
Bud Light stays true to their colors whether it is in magazine to even their web page. The colors
remain blue like their cans and bottles. The text within it picture are not very big but the name of the

Reflective Essay On Service Learning
Service learning is always viewed as being something you just have to do. If you want a good grade,
then you do it, but you rush through it because you don t appreciate the opportunity. I used to think
about it that way because it seemed like it was just wasting my time. However, I ve discovered that the
older I get, the more I analyze things, whether it be school work or general life questions. Over the
summer, I had an abundance of time to think things through and work out everything in my mind. I
believe that service learning can help you realise your passion as it did with me. I volunteered at
Martin Millennium to help clean up their campus and revitalize the Earth on which their school stands.
I spread mulch in areas of dry soil and around the playground, so the kids could play without fear of
hurting themselves. We spread the mulch around the trees and by the walkways. I volunteered at the
Tender Mercies pet organization as well. I helped feed the dogs and walk them outside. I did the daily
routine of washing food bowls and dog blankets too. During my time volunteering at Tender Mercies,
I learned that no matter how many times you think you ve seen it all, you will always find something
to amaze you. I ve previously said that over the the summer, I thought about things and sometimes
thinking too much can lead to bad things. I don t really know why, but dogs have a way to sense when
you re upset and they always make you feel better. I ve learned that happiness is

Neurotransmitters Function
A neurotransmitter is a chemical substance that is released in the nervous system at the end of the
nerve fibers. Its release results in the transfer of impulses and information across fibers or other
structure of the body. Dopamine is one of the neurotransmitters that are present in the nervous system.
It is the neurotransmitter that is responsible for controlling the centers of reward and pleasure in brains
of animals and humans. It is also responsible for making us acknowledge the presence of areas that
could lead to a pleasurable award and how to emotionally respond to this stimulus. The brain is the
site for the production of dopamine. The brain uses the dopaminergic neurons that are present in the
midbrain to manufacture dopamine. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Unfortunately, the percentage of those injured or killed goes up significantly when looking at

Controversial Sports Mascots Analysis
A very sensitive subject and tough question that has been asked since the early 1900 s is, should
controversial sports mascots be replaced with mascots that are not offensive. It is a topic that

on it. He told how his mom jerked his hat off and threw it in the trash because she had been fighting
against Indian stereotypes all her life. While the author believes that these Native Americans are right
to protest and fight to have the mascots changed, his argument is not entirely convincing because to

Essay About Zeus
Zeus was considered the god of gods. He had rule over the skies, thunder, lightning, hospitality, honor,

also considered short tempered and carefree. He had many affairs during his marriage to Hera. He was

said that Zeus was asked by a bee to give the bees stingers so that they could protect themselves from
humans. Zeus agreed to give them stingers, but the tradeoff was that after a bee used its stinger, it
would die. This myth taught the lesson not to pray for evil.

Analysis Of The Film Goodfellas
The critically acclaimed film, Goodfellas, is a gangster crime drama that features an incredible amount
of talent. Household names such as: Robert De Niro (Jimmy Conway), Joe Pesci (Tommy DeVito),
Paul Sorvino (Paul Cicero), and promising stars like Ray Liotta (Henry Hill) and Lorraine Bracco
(Karen Hill), attracted numerous Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. That type of cast power,
linked with the signature talent of Martin Scorsese as a director, made for cinematic gold.
Unquestionably, the actors and actresses did an excellent job augmenting the verisimilitude of this
film and compelling audiences to empathize with their characters. But the cinematography in this film
plays just as large a role in having audiences feel what the characters are feeling at a specific moment.
Through the use of freeze frames, we learn of significant moments that shape Henry into the man that
he is. By means of first person narration we are able to know exactly what is going through a
particular character s mind. Finally, wonderful editing made great use of point of view and multiple
jump cuts, which added to the sensation that we are undergoing the same experiences as the characters
on screen. I will go into further detail and specify scenes that convey these elements as the essay
progresses. Altogether, Martin Scorsese s Goodfellas effectively depicts paramount scenes and allows
the audience to empathize with the characters by virtue of stylistic editing and cinematography.

  • 2. Social Class in Great Expectations In Great Expectations, Pip changed his social class immensely. Pip did not understand how a poor family could be happy. Pip thought that social class was everything in life. He also thought that money was very important. In reality, it turns out that money and social rank do not matter in life. What really matters is being connected and having relationships with family and friends. Pip finds that out the hard way. In Great Expectations, Pip is exposed to many different social classes, he acts very differently, he finds out how lonely he becomes, and how family and friends mean everything in life. Early in life, Pip grew up in a poor and kind of lower class family. As a young child, Pip did not understand how poor people could be so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pip ...gave me the bread and meat without looking at me, as insolently as if I were a dog in disgrace. I was so humiliated, hurt, spurned, offended, angry, sorry..., (Dickens 64). Pip is disconcerted and depressed when Estella does that to him in the beginning of the novel. Pip basically does the same thing to Joe. Not with pleasure, though I was bound to him by so many ties; no; with considerable disturbance, some mortification, and a keen sense of incongruity. If I could have kept him away by paying money, I certainly would have paid money, (Dickens 229). Joe is disrespected and he is mortified by the way Pip treats him. Pip becomes very forlorn while he is in London. Once he is in London, he does not have many friends like he did before. This really changes the way he thinks in life. Money changes people and it certainly has a consequence on Pip as it is shown in the novel. Social class does not really shape Pip into a reputable young man. That is so because he thinks that he is too good for Joe and Biddy. Not the entire London trip is appalling. Pip learns some really good skills in London. He learns how to be a gentleman and he learns correct table manners. It is considered that you must be better educated, in accordance with your altered position, and that you will be alive to the importance and necessity of at once entering on that advantage, (Dickens 186). • 3. Essay about Cultural Expectations in a Selection of Texts In every society that I know of, there are cultural expectations. Literature tends to follow the same expectations. We have had quite a few stories in this class where we focused on cultural expectations. Rip in Rip Van Winkle, Editha and George in Editha and Major Molineux in My Kinsman, Major Molineux are all victims of cultural expectations. Let me start with Rip Van Winkle. This story actually takes place in two different time periods. Before Rip fell asleep, he was living in the pre colonial era of the United States. He was expected to work and take care of his family. The great error in Rip s composition was an insuperable aversion to all kinds of profitable labor. (943) He had no qualms about work its self but he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I feel that George is a victim of cultural expectations whereas Editha is influenced by it but she is not victimized. Editha is a proud member of society and she wants what every other woman wants, a strong husband who will fight for his country. She wants George to go and fight. She writes a letter telling him that she loves him but the man I marry must love his country first of all. . . (1448) George is expected to love his country above all and want to fight to protect it. He does not believe in the cause of the Spanish American War. He is torn between his love for Editha and his disgust for the war. George signs up for the war in a drunken stupor and still has the presence of mind to mock the war with witty sarcasm as he walks the street near Editha s house. He obviously does not have any desire to fight as he says: What a thing it is to have a country that can t be wrong, but if it is, is right anyway! Editha does not even listen to what he is saying; she just hands him the letter and tells him to read it after he starts. She could not be happier. George is one of the earliest people to die in the war; he is a victim of cultural expectations. One can argue that Editha is a victim as well but I do not buy it. She wears black in her mourning period but I think she feel honored that George died for her. I think I am giving her too much credit when I say honored. She enjoys the attention that she gets after having ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Oral history can often give you a better idea about culture and people because there is less open to interpretation than a written document. Language is one of the biggest parts of human language and our language and communication skills would be much less advanced without our oral histories. The coldest is in the North and the South Poles where the water is close to freezing, also known as glaciers, because sunlight isn t directly hitting it with it s sun rays. • 7. Explication of the Cogito Essay Explication of the Cogito In his Meditations, Rene Descartes attempts to prove the existence and reality of himself and things external to himself. In order to fulfill such a feat, Descartes decides to doubt all that he knows, for he knows not whether that can be relied upon. He doubts his knowledge for three main reasons. For one, he accounts that in dreams, many times he had thought that things external to himself were real. Also, he had heard people declare pain in limbs that they had lost long ago. After pondering these two experiences he declared, the chief and most common mistake which is to be found here consists in my judging that the ideas which are in me resemble, or conform to, things outside me (Descartes 16). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a subject object relationship. In order to question something, there must be something to question, therefore a questionable object exists. And in order for there to be questioning, some thinking thing, i.e. Descartes, must be doing the questioning, therefore, he exists. Even if the Evil Genius is constantly deceiving him, that fact that he is being deceived means that he exists. For this reason, Descartes could not doubt that he was doubting, and thus was able to conclude that this proposition, I am, I exist, is necessarily true whenever it is put forward by me or conceived in my mind. (17). To completely prove his point to the skeptics he had to go further, for how could one realize that he/she is doubting? Descartes answers that this is possible through natural light intuition. By establishing that he is a thing that, doubts, questions, thinks, affirms, denies, imagines, and perceives, through examples, he is able to prove how one could realize his/her doubting. Descartes gives us the example of the wax that is melted, and the people on the street with coats. If the wax melts, one still perceives such as wax because the wax is merely something extended, flexible, and changeable (21). On the street, one could see coats and hats, but one determines that one is seeing people. This, like the wax, is done through judgement alone, by the intellect alone. Aiming to educate individuals and health care providers about resistant bacteria s negative influence on their long term health, Europe launched a project in 2007: Burden of resistance and disease in European nations (Burden) since the Department of Health identified the lack of data on antibiotics (as cited in Kaier et al. 493). In response to this strategy, United Kingdom s Department of Health and Environment implanted an antimicrobial resistance strategy from March 2013 to 2018 to promote the responsible antibiotic use for animals and humans and to enhance the guidelines of monitoring antibiotic use (as cited in While 345). So far, it seems like Europe s strategies are far ahead than North America who has not yet executed any strategies to reduce antibiotic resistance despite the heavy usage of antibiotics as mentioned earlier. Finally, new guidelines are in place by Europe s government: NG15 and KTT9. NG15 states recommendations regarding antibiotic stewardship in organizations, which includes monitoring antibiotics, identifying resistance patterns, and providing feedback to prescribers. Investment strategies are broadly divided into two main categories: real investments and financial investments. The English government readily sent its citizens to America to exploit its abundant source of raw materials and the English people exponentially came to the colonies to start a new life for themselves and to thrive socially. After the establishment of this cash crop, tobacco was glorified and largely advertised in both the colonies and England. As well as its large cultivation of tobacco, its connection to what became known as the Chesapeake Bay served as a prominent economic aspect to Virginia. By mid century, the establishment of indentured servants had been regulated and used frequently by plantation owners. This being a prominent factor to Virginia s social development, its downfall and rise of slavery also played a prime role in social transformation. Bacon s Rebellion in 1676 was the first rebellion in the colonies and it largely resulted in the hardening of racial lines with slavery. The plantation owners and farmers now saw it as a dangerous asset to have white indentured servants as workers and also saw having slaves as a much higher profit. By the establishment of the Virginia colony and its use of producing the tobacco cash crop, boatloads of slaves were brought to work and profit the upper class plantation owners. What became known as the Middle Passage became nothing more to the white upper class than profit and population increase. A quote from Robin Barton, a Brooklyn legal journalist, said this in her article on the website The Crime Report; Women are entitled to control over their bodies. Because prostitution is a victimless crime, it should be legalized in order to ensure the welfare and prosperity of sex workers who are trying to make an honest living and protect them while doing so. People in favor of keeping prostitution illegal often mention that during the time the prostitute is working, they are being forced to consent or they are being raped. My response to this objection is this; A consenting man and a consenting woman who agree to fornicate for a price is not rape, especially if there are laws and regulations protecting the prostitute and proper facilities (like a brothel) keeping them safe and secure. An interesting comparison to prostitution industry, is the pornography industry. Animal Sympathy In Animals Animal sympathy is the ability of animals to form connections and feel the emotions of other organisms and to sympathize with their owners and their animal counterparts. Animal sympathy is rarely considered or just investigated among a limited number of species, such as whales. This is mostly because the human aspect in the relationship between man and animal is usually mentioned by the written media as it is more likely easier to understand by the targeted audience. However, it is also important to understand the emotional viewpoint of animals, especially those which are an integral part to human existence and society, as it can help foster a better understanding in every human being, regardless of whether or not he or she interacts with animals. Before the presence of sympathy in animals can be discussed, one should understand the definition of the concept of sympathy itself. Sympathy is a rather easy concept to act upon but difficult to decipher accurately. Through sympathy, one might aid a person in distress for no self benefit but purely due to good nature. According to philosopher Adam Smith in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, every person on this Earth has the capability to feel or even automatically be affected by a wave of sympathy at least once in his or her lifetime.
