Audience research
1. Audience research
When it comes to creating a film, discussing who your audience will be is the most
important aspect of the planning stages. This is because, depending on characteristics such
as actors, genre and setting will have an effect on the groups of people who go and watch
your film. For example, if your film consists of romance and teenage heart throbs then you
are more likely to attract young teenage girls than grown men.
There are many different areas to examine during the research into your
audience such as: age, gender, country, society, class, religion and many more. Below, I will
explain the type of audience which I hope will be attracted to my movie and what I will do in
order to grab their attention.
The general certificate for a crime film is a 15. This gives us a
base age for our target audience as the film will include scenes
of heavy violence and swearing. This means that the age range
will be between 15-40 years old as the older generation will be
more interested in crime films due to their well laid out plot
and characters. In addition, the middle aged generation is more
likely to watch TV shows which are based around crime such as
Broad-church or police interceptors. In addition, crime films
that sexualize woman tend to attract more men than those
which focus on the intellect of a woman. An example of this is
“sin city” where a number of female actors are used in a sexual
context.
Furthermore, the thriller genre has a similar plot path as they have engaging scenes and
suspense from the very beginning. However, with this genre, the way that the film is written
seems to attract a younger audience through the ages of 15-30. This is also because many of
the middle aged people see thrillers as badly written pieces of garbage which are not worth
their time. Moreover, both genders are likely to be attracted to the thriller genre as men
come for the suspense and action which takes place which puts them on the edge of their
seats. It will also attract women as thriller generally have a great deal of enigma codes
which will leave them asking numerous amounts of questions.
When you combine these two genres together, you get the “crime-thriller”
genre. Here we see a greater emphasis on the criminals and their malicious acts which they
carry out. The plot to many of these may consist of murders, rapes and chaotic heists.
The ethnicity that is attracted to crime thrillers is generally a wide one as many actors from
different ethnicities are featured which individually attract a different audience to the film.
For example, “Pulp Fiction” includes characters from different ethnicities such as Samuel L.
Jackson who will attract a large part of the African Americans to watch the film.
2. As my film is in the crime thriller genre, I will have my age ranging between 15-35 in order to
incorporate the people who are likely to go and watch both genres. This is due to the fact
that the thriller genre constantly aims for a younger audience and the crime genre aims for
an older one. Furthermore, the film will appeal to both men and woman as like in thriller
movie, it will raise many enigma codes which the women will be interested in and have a
god plot for the men to stay engaged in.
