2. Age
The usual age for someone watching a horror film is between the ages of 15 and
25. During young adulthood they are in the key stages of developing of
developing themselves and learning about the world. They want to try new things
and experiment with different emotions and feelings. They try and get thrills
wherever they can. A horror films can give the thrill they are looking for ad can
excite a young audience easier than an older one. Many young people enjoy
being scared and by watching a horror film they are able to be frightened in a
controlled and safe environment. A young audience are less susceptible to being
put off the film by violence and unnatural images which may make older
audience view it in a negative way.
3. Gender
Males are more likely going to enjoy a horror film than females, this is
due to the stereotypical thrill seeker which is portrayed as a man. The
thrills they seek contrast with their young adult hormones.
Violence is also a convention of horror film which is often preferred by
males, boys try and become the stereotype that has been set out for
them. This is that they seek the thrill of violence, blood and gore which
horror films can provide for them.
4. Social class
Overall horror films are aimed at the working class
community. This is due to the level of thrill and excitement
that can be obtained quickly and relatively cheaply. If the
higher class community watched horror films they are
usually a sub genre of another genre such as romance or
action.
5. Group types & interests
Horror films are sometimes targeted at groups of people. For example groups of
teenagers, as it is almost seen as a social event to watch a horror film and be
scared together. Groups are also attracted to this genre of film as it gives them
something to discuss and could be good conversation starters.
Generally the target interests of a horror film are blood and intense violence.
Also, targeted at individuals that have an interest in the supernatural and the
unexplained. They may also be aimed at those who enjoy a sense of mystery and
illusion, as many horror films withhold information from the audience e.g. who
the killer is and what there motive could be.
6. Paranormal Activity Series
Paranormal activity is aimed primarily at a younger audience
of around 15-25. The main characters are of a younger age
which would make the film feel more realistic for that age
group because they can identify with the people in the film.
This will make the film scarier to them in the process.
