This document discusses how social groups are represented in the author's music magazine. The magazine targets middle and lower class males aged 15-25, who are the primary audiences for similar rock magazines. Photos in the magazine represent this group through clothing, poses, and props associated with rock music. The featured artist is presented as a grungy rocker through his dark clothing, beanie, and serious expression in posed photos. His crossed arms imply dominance, fitting the often male-dominated rock genre. Poses and a guitar further enhance his image as a rock artist who tells fans what to think.
1. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
EVALUATION QUESTION 2
2. The way in which my magazine represents different social groups is the use of different Mise en scene
categories such as body language, clothing and props which are used. My magazine cover represents
similar groups to those of “kerrang!” and “classic rock” magazines. This is due to the fact they are all
aimed at the same target audience (middle and lower class males aging from 15-25). These are the
groups which the photos of all the magazines are based off of and will be the most successful to aim
mine at. The reason for the audience being this specific group is that they are the ones who the artists
aim their music at and are the type of people who are most likely to attend their concerts.
3. I have chosen to present my artist as grungy/ rocker as
that is the type of music that he plays and what his fans
are most interested in. I have done this by dressing him in
a simple black hoodie and white t shirt to show that he
enjoys wearing dark clothing (as some emos do) and yet
does not distract the reader from his facial features. I have
also placed a beanie on him to add to the grungy,
underground look as it is usually associated with that
genre. Furthermore, his body language adds to his feel as
it is serious with his arms crossed and a stare that instantly
attracts the reader to his face. It also shows that he is
mainly about the music and wants to focus on that as
much as he can. The fact that his arms a crossed also
gives him dominance over the reader as it is as if he is
telling them what to do and what to listen to. This links to
the fact that many rock bands are heavily male based and
that they fight for dominance which is usually taken by the
lead singer. However, as he is a solo artist, he is used to
being the boss and telling other people what to do when he
is performing on stage or in the recording studio. This
mind-set may be taken on by many of his fans as a large
majority of them are trying to find their place as they are
quite young and may still be in school.

4. This is then further enforced on the contents
page where his body language consists of him
looking up to the sky with his arms spread out as
if he is telling people to bow down to him as he is
known as a rock god and no one can stop him. In
addition, on the contents page, you can see the
artist holding a guitar. This enhances the feel of
rocker as a guitar is an instrument that is heavily
associated with the rock/grunge genre and
shows that writes all of the music himself and
does not need anyone else to help him to
become the greatest artist in that genre.
