1. Project brief
Project name Undecided
Medium/format Action comedy movie trailer + ancillary poster and magazine cover
Length 2 - 2mins 30secs
Deadline 16th December 2016
Group members Lewis Tull
Brief overview of content
(approx. 50 words)
A recently-retired police detective teams up with a street wise kid to rescue his
kidnapped female colleague. Throughout the film, the kid realises he has secret
super powers, and they use this to their advantage to save the woman.
Target audience (age
group, gender bias, socio-
economic status and
lifestyle profiling)
Teenagers/young adults – 16-25 year olds.
This is because I want to use scenes involving violence and mature content.
Possible
scheduling/publishing
suggestions
The trailer would be shown in the cinema prior to other films of the same genre, so
I can reach my target audience. I could also cut certain violent parts out of the
trailer to make it suitable for TV viewing, to attract a younger audience.
What comparable
products have you
researched?
Various British and American action comedy films – Kingsman: The Secret Service,
trailer for central Intelligence, Men in Black 2, Mission Impossible…
What is the rationale
behind this text?
Elements that I plan to use are: dramatic irony to involve the viewer in the action
and add comedy, use of different shot lengths to portray pace and scale in the film
and a voiceover to provide a back story.
2. Project brief
What representations will
be operating in your text?
Are these justified?
The main character would be a strong man because it is stereotypically a man who is
stronger than a woman. This is justified because there are more men in higher jobs than
women and there are more male protagonists in action films, such as James Bond.
How will you test whether
the product is successful?
How will you check that it
accomplishes the intended
effect?
I would use a questionnaire and give it to my target audience after watching the trailer.
These questions will relate to certain codes and conventions of action films and the
target audience can choose whether my trailer has met them.
What generic codes and
conventions will be
operating in your text?
A mixture of urban and rural locations, such as cities (similar to Kingsman) to set
context, fight scenes involving weapons, and a main narrative for the protagonist, which
helps the audience to follow the action. I would also used fast paced editing to add
excitement for the audience.
What are the obvious
messages incorporated into
the text?
The fact that bad people in the world, who go about causing destruction on a small
scale, can create a negative ripple effect on a wide spread scale of people. Another
message I would impose is that the bad people will use their evil powers as a self-
beneficial source of control.
Are there any hidden
messages incorporated into
the text?
Don’t judge a book by its cover – the kid who seems to be violent in normal view, has
superpowers and uses them to fight the villain.
Identify any resource
constraints (time, money,
equipment, human
resources) that might affect
your production and your
hopes for your production
I will need to plan a shot list and manage my time so that I can film all of the scenes
together. I will also need to make sure that my actors are able to be present on the
same day, as they may have different schedules.
I have a limited budget for this trailer, so I wouldn’t be able to purchase professional
equipment. Therefore, I will either borrow or hire equipment to use.
