Target audience
1. Target Audience.
Age:
The usual target audience for a horror film is 15 – 25. The most common
reason for this is that young adults and teenagers like and enjoy thrills. These
thrills and scares aremore likely to excite and appeal to a younger audience
rather than older people. Also, many younger audiences are not put off about
seeing graphic images but are actually drawn towards them. For example the
Human Centipede in 2009 is well known and viewed specifically becauseof the
graphic scenes and themes in it. However, many older audiences may be put
off by disturbing images or graphic violence.
Gender:
Horror films are generally aimed more at males than females. This is because
stereotypically males enjoy the violence and graphic images more than
females. The thrill seeking attitude is more associated with males rather than
females. Also, young males are seen as immature, meaning that they aremore
susceptible to the blood, guts and gore that a horror film might produce.
However, there are a lot of young females that enjoy horror films justas much
as males although most commonly horror films are not to be aimed at their
gender.
2. Class
Overallhorror films are aimed at working class community. This is due to the
level of thrill and excitement which is gained forma horror film with a
relatively cheap price. If the higher class watch horror films they are usually a
sub-genreon another genre such as romanceor action. This is due to the
higher level of satisfaction middle class individuals seek when watching a film.
