Science 7 - LAND and SEA BREEZE and its Characteristics
Oceans eleven trailer analysis
1. “Ocean’s eleven” trailer analysis.
Mise en scene:
Throughout the trailer, there is a large variety of costumes used. For example, at the
beginning of the trailer, Mr Ocean is seen wearing a prison uniform. This has been used to
indicate that he is man who delves in the criminal world and that even though he may be an
amazing thief, he can still be caught building up the thought in the viewers mind that he
could be caught again in the movie, leaving the audience with that little bit of doubt in their
minds that the plan will
fail.
In the next scene, Mr
Ocean can be seen
wearing a very
fashionable suit sitting in
what seems to be an
extravagant restaurant.
This change has
happened so drastically
that the audience are
certain that he is a
master criminal and has
pulled many bank heists
in order to be able to
afford all the luxuries
that he has.
2. Furthermore, the costumes included in
this movie also comprise of the
traditional robbers outfit, for example
black jumpers and trousers, black
gloves, grappling lines. This shows the
audience that after all, they are
criminals at heart and that they should
not be rooted for even if the way that
they execute their plans makes you
yourself want to join in.
The characters actions throughout the trailer show that of a light hearted approach instead
of a serious and solemn one. This may be due to the fact that the writers of the film wanted
you to have a greater connection with the characters and wrote them with great amounts of
charisma and humour to keep the viewers engaged in the film. For instance, when we see
Mr Ocean explaining to the rest of the team the situation of the heist, Matt Damon’s
character, Linus Caldwell, say “A smash and grab job”. This proves to the audience that
behind their impressive intellects, there is a sense of humour which enable us to have a
stronger relationship with the cast.
Cinematography:
During the course of the trailer there is a large use of long / mid shots. These have been
used primarily during the action sequences of the trailer in order to show off the characters
surroundings and further immerse the audience into the filmas the director is allowing
them to see everything the character can see and more. This technique can invoke different
emotions in the audience, for instance it can cause them to become more paranoid and
worried about the character due to the situation that they are in. an great example of this
can be seen when yen must
climb out of the very tight box
that he has been placed in in
order to get inside the vault. It
allows the audience to worry
and also stare in awe as the
actions unfold on screen.
Furthermore, the use of close ups have also been implemented in the trailer. These have
been primarily used when introducing who the character is being played by and will be
shown after the title card with the respected actor on it. This allows for the further
3. understanding of the audience as to who is playing who and which character is more
important than the others. It also plays a vital role in the marketing of the film as only the
big name actors such as George Clooney, Matt Damon and Julia Roberts are mentioned
which will cause the viewers of the trailer to be more inclined to go and watch the movie as
their favourite actor may be starring in it.
Sound:
In the trailer, the use of non-diegetic sound from beginning to end is very prominent. The
music that is playing along with the shots resembles that of the type of music that you
would expect to hear of you were in Vegas yourself. This has been applied to the trailer as
the whole movie revolves around Vegas and the casinos in which they are robbing.
In addition to the non-diegetic sound, there is also the involvement of diegetic sound. This is
conventional in a trailer as it allows the audience to connect with the characters in the film
and figure out what type of personality they have. In the Ocean’s eleven trailer, there is a
large amount of dialogue between two characters and there is always a conversation
happening on screen. Even if it turns into a vice over which is played over a certain shot to
further clarify the discussion the characters are having.
Editing:
The editing in the "Ocean's Eleven" trailer is very fast paced. However, they length of the
shots are quite similar with no change as the trailer progresses. This is unusual for a trailer
as they generally follow a pattern of speed which shows that they increase the speed so to
keep the audience engaged. However, this trailer has used the music to create a sense of
hurry as the tempo of the music is quite fast paced. This played over the long scenes creates
the atmosphere of a robbery in which everything must move quickly in order not to be
caught but slow enough so that no mistakes are made.
The title cards used in the trailer also follow the general conventions of a film trailer as they
aid the audience to understand more about the film. For example, the title cards give us a
brief introduction to the characters. They also further explain hwo difficult the plan that
they have put into motion is and what the characters will have to overcome in order to
complete it successfully.
