Analyze Learners
Learner’s general characteristics
Teaching the months of the year to a 1
st
grade class, Special ed, 10 boys, 7 girls, 70% white 20%
African-American and 10% Hispanic.7 students in the class have mild to severe ADHD
(attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
Entry Competencies
The students have prior knowledge in
1. Typing on the computer
2. Counting
3. The days of the week
4. Letters
Learning Styles
The students prefer to learn in a hands on way. They like to be up and doing some type of
activity instead of sitting in their seats. Some of the students do not test well on paper
tests therefore many games are played to help the student remember the material before a
test.
State Objectives
1. Students will work in groups of four.
2. Each group will make a calendar of the year.
3. The students have one week to get this completed in class.
4. Students must know each month as well as how many days are in that month.
5. Each group member will be in charge of three months.
6. They must have a theme for the calendar and decorate it accordingly.
7. When project is finished the group must present it to the class showing the theme of their
calendar as well as the pictures on it.
8. All students must then say all the months of the year while presenting.
My students will recite the months of the year after playing games, singing songs,
and making a calendar of the year by the end of the week with 85% accuracy.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials
When the teacher is first introducing the months of the years to the classroom they will all learn a
song to help them remember. A LCD projector will be used to show a calendar to the classroom.
The students will be allowed to get on the computer where they will play a game asking them
what the months of the year are.
The teacher must choose games and singing to keep her students with ADHD on track and
focused. When making their calendars each student will get to use a real calendar to guide them.
Utilize Media and Materials
Preview the materials
The teacher will preview each calendar before handing them out. The student will preview the
calendar in learning each month.
Prepare the materials
The teacher will make sure there are enough calendars and all are the same year. The teacher
makes sure each student has paper, pencils, crayons, markers, ect.
Prepare the Environment
The class tables will be set up with four chairs at each one. Make sure each station has the
required materials set up for the students.
Prepare the Learners
The teacher will prepare the students by telling them exactly what they will be doing each day
for this project. The teacher will give homework the night before the project of having them
memorize at least the first three months. The student will have to memorize three months every
night until all are completed.
Provide learning experience
The teacher will show the calendar on the projector that is in the middle of the room. There are
four computers in the room and students will take turns playing games on the computer. Each
computer has a head set to use while using the computer.
Require Learner Participation
Large group activities
The teacher will go around the room and each student will have to recite the next month. The
whole class will play a game to see who can say the months the fastest.
Small group activities
The students will get into groups of four where they will go around saying the months of the
year. They will play games in the group and sing the songs that we learned earlier in the lesson.
They will also make their calendars in these groups.
Personal Interview
The students will be interviewed at the end of the week on how well they know there months.
This will be their test.
Technology
Students will get a turn on the computer each day to play their month games. They also may
print out pictures online for their calendars
Evaluate and Revise
Assessment of learner achievement
Individual Interview (10 points)
Calendar (50 points)
Calendar presentation (35 points)
Evaluation of media and methods
The students will be asked to write how they felt about using the computer to play games.
Evaluation of overall instruction
The teacher will ask the student what else they would like to do to learn the months if they had to
do it over to help the teacher for the following years.
