Tuesday ASSURE
I. Analyze the Learners: I will be teaching about the Olympics to a 3rd
grade class, 10
boys and 12 girls, 80% white, 15% African-American and 5% Latino. Two of the
students have IEPs for learning disabilities. The students have previously studied
geography of the United States and a few other countries. This unit will build on this
prior knowledge.
II. State Objectives: My third grade students will identify and describe the symbols, mottos,
and traditions of the Olympics, utilizing QR codes to reference websites and pre-made
posters, with 95% accuracy by the end of the day.
III. Select Methods, Media and Materials: To meet the various needs and learning styles of
my third grade students, I will implement the following methods, media, and materials
throughout my lesson:
a. Media and Materials- I will use a poster about the symbols, mottos, and traditions
as a model for students to reference when creating their projects. This will help
identify and explain these concepts.
b. Poster Board and Markers- Students will utilize these during the chalk talk
activating strategy.
c. QR codes- To make learning more fun for the students, I will have three stations
with different QR codes that link to different websites. They can use these
websites to research about symbols, mottos, and traditions. The students will scan
2. the codes using the app on the iPad, and then as a group they will write down
facts in a chart from the website provided.
d. IPads- This will be used to scan QR codes and record a podcast the students will
create as a group. This will help identify and explain the different symbols,
mottos, and traditions of the Olympics.
IV. Utilize Media and Materials: Before class, I will make sure all electronic devices are
working properly. This includes the IPads, QR code apps, and the podcast creator. I will
utilize visual aids such as the poster for an example. It will be big enough for the
students to see, eye catching, and placed at the front of the room, for the students to
reference. The iPads will be at each station, so students can easily access them and not
have to carry them across the room. This will decrease the chance of damage to the
technology and confusion about where to find the materials. I will keep the students
placed in pods and make the centers out of these pods, so students can work
collaboratively.
V. Require Learner Participation: To begin this lesson, I would do an activity called
“chalk talk.” This activity is a great way to activate knowledge. I will place three
different poster boards around the room. One will have the word symbols in the middle.
Another will have the word mottos in the center, and the last will have traditions in the
middle. The students will go, in their pre-assigned groups, to one poster board at a time.
At each poster board there will be markers. Students will be instructed to write words or
phrases regarding the Olympics that come to mind when they see the word in the center
of the poster board. After students finish, I will pull each board up in front of the class
3. and discuss what they wrote. Once we discuss what they wrote, I will explore the
concepts with them.
Next, I will discuss this with the students by using a poster I previously created.
We will discuss things that they mentioned on the chalk talk posters and whether they
were right or not. Then, I will post all of the posters at the front of the room. This will
allow the students to use these as evidence for their group podcast. Then, I will give the
students instructions on how to use the QR code app, and I will tell them how they need
to work in groups to fill out a chart I give them. After they complete the chart, I will ask
them, as a group, to develop a podcast script and use the iPods to record it. In this
podcast, they must tell about every symbol, motto, and tradition we discussed because all
of the members of the group must participate. The podcast must be a minimum of 2-5
minutes in length. Once they complete the podcast, they need to post it on their wiki.
Each individual student must have this on his or her wiki for the end of the unit portfolio.
VI. Evaluate and Revise: To assess student understanding and if they met my objective, I
will do the following throughout the lesson:
a. TBWA (teach by walking around)- I will circulate the room as I teach and while
the students perform their group projects. This will allow me to see if all students
are participating and if they are grasping the concept of symbols, mottos, and
traditions of the Olympics. It also allows me to answer any questions they have at
the time, and it provides me the opportunity to revise the instructions, if
necessary.
b. I will look at each group’s podcast and make sure they met all of the
requirements: 2-5 minutes in length, identified and described all of the symbols,
4. mottos, and traditions we discussed that day, and every member of the group is in
the podcast.
c. In addition, I will look at the charts the students filled out using the QR codes to
see if this method helped the students gain knowledge or if it was ineffective.
Also, it allows me to see what facts the students thought were important for each
of the symbols, mottos, and traditions.
