ASSURE Method Assignment

Analyze Learners
General Characteristics
The students for whom this lesson is intended are first graders in Special Education. There are 10 boys
and 7 girls all ranging in age from 6 to 8 years. Seven of these students have mild to severe ADHD. The
class population is made up of mostly white Americans (70%), followed by African Americans (20%), and
then, Hispanics (10%).

State Objectives
The objectives for this lesson are as follows:
1. Using pneumonic devices (poems and songs), the first grade students will recite the months of
the year in order after one week with 100% accuracy. Students will also arrange themselves by
birthdays to show competency of the order of months.
2. Using hand manipulatives (counting on knuckles) and pneumonic devices (poems), the first
grade students will identify how many days are in each month after the second week with 85100% accuracy.
3. With practice, the first grade students will write and spell correctly each month of the year with
85-100% accuracy by the third week. Students will play spelling games (i.e. Around the World;
word scrambles).

Select Method, Media, and Materials
The teacher first selects a teaching method, followed by material and equipment that are available at
the school. She also develops instructional materials and evaluation guidelines. The method she chooses
to use is large-group instruction with written activities as well as oral recitation. The lesson will begin
with a simple SmartBoard introduction of the months of the year (how many and what they are). This
allows the students to see each month in its written form and allows them to view the order in which
they come. The SmartBoard is available in the classroom, and presentation is created by the teacher
using MS PowerPoint.
After introduction of months, each lesson will begin with a holiday/month association, where students
will write down their answer to a question (ex. When do we celebrate Valentine’s Day?) on individual
whiteboards and then reveal them. This will open up discussion for review or introduction purposes. At
this time students may be evaluated on spelling or content competency.
The lesson will continue with the introduction of useful songs/poems with music and visible lyrics on the
screen (handouts may also be passed out). Songs/poems will be practiced/recited daily for a week in a
large group. During these times, students may be permitted to stand or perform hand motions, reducing
restlessness. Students will also begin to practice the knuckle-counting manipulative to aid them in
ordering months and identifying the number of days in each.
Students will write their birth date on notecards and will then be asked to place themselves in order of
birthdays to practice both writing and ordering. Students will continue practice through spelling games.
Interactive games will allow the students to get up from their seats every now and then, reducing
restlessness, especially those students with ADHD.

Utilize Materials
Preview Materials
Teacher has previewed all materials not created by her to verify age and level appropriateness.
Prepare Materials
The teacher creates presentations and any handouts using MS PowerPoint and MS Word. The teacher
assures that all equipment (SmartBoard and music player) is working properly prior to the lesson.
Notecards will also be provided by the teacher for the birthday ordering activity.
Prepare Environment
The classroom desks will be set up in a horseshoe shape with the SmartBoard at the front center. Desks
will be diagonal, facing in and forward to provide more space for the students and to focus their
attention more so to the front of the classroom. Each desk will contain a small, individual whiteboard
and dry erase marker to be used for certain activities.
Prepare the Learners
To prepare the students, the teacher presents the overall plan and objectives for the lesson.
Provide the Learning Experience
During the introductory phase of the lesson, the teacher presents materials using the SmartBoard
located at the front center of the classroom. Music will be played from the music player also at the front
of the classroom, easily accessible to the teacher for a smoother transition.

Require Learner Participation
Large-Group Activities
At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher will guide the students through the months of the year, going
through correct pronunciation and order. Students will be able to see each month on the SmartBoard in
the front of the classroom. As a whole class, the students will repeat the months, and will later practice
their order through song/poem. Students will also learn hand manipulatives, presented by the teacher,
to identify the number of days in each month. As the students progress, spelling games will be played,
such as Around the World and Word Scrambles, where students will spell each month together while
going around the room or forming groups. Oral reviews and recitation will occur daily through activities,
song, and group discussion.
Individual Activities
Individual notecards will be distributed to students. Students must write their birthday on their cards
and may be permitted to decorate them. During whiteboard Q&A’s, students will individually write
answers on his/her own whiteboard to later be revealed.

Evaluate and Revise
Assessment of Learner Achievement
Students’ achievement and progress will be evaluated through observations during individual activities
as well as through oral recitations of songs/poems and spelling.
Evaluation of Instruction (including media and methods)
After each week, revisions to the lesson will be implemented as needed. At the completion of the
lesson, all ineffective media, materials and methods will be evaluated and revised for future planning.

ASSURE Method Assignment

  • 1. ASSURE Method Assignment Analyze Learners General Characteristics The students for whom this lesson is intended are first graders in Special Education. There are 10 boys and 7 girls all ranging in age from 6 to 8 years. Seven of these students have mild to severe ADHD. The class population is made up of mostly white Americans (70%), followed by African Americans (20%), and then, Hispanics (10%). State Objectives The objectives for this lesson are as follows: 1. Using pneumonic devices (poems and songs), the first grade students will recite the months of the year in order after one week with 100% accuracy. Students will also arrange themselves by birthdays to show competency of the order of months. 2. Using hand manipulatives (counting on knuckles) and pneumonic devices (poems), the first grade students will identify how many days are in each month after the second week with 85100% accuracy. 3. With practice, the first grade students will write and spell correctly each month of the year with 85-100% accuracy by the third week. Students will play spelling games (i.e. Around the World; word scrambles). Select Method, Media, and Materials The teacher first selects a teaching method, followed by material and equipment that are available at the school. She also develops instructional materials and evaluation guidelines. The method she chooses to use is large-group instruction with written activities as well as oral recitation. The lesson will begin with a simple SmartBoard introduction of the months of the year (how many and what they are). This allows the students to see each month in its written form and allows them to view the order in which they come. The SmartBoard is available in the classroom, and presentation is created by the teacher using MS PowerPoint. After introduction of months, each lesson will begin with a holiday/month association, where students will write down their answer to a question (ex. When do we celebrate Valentine’s Day?) on individual whiteboards and then reveal them. This will open up discussion for review or introduction purposes. At this time students may be evaluated on spelling or content competency. The lesson will continue with the introduction of useful songs/poems with music and visible lyrics on the screen (handouts may also be passed out). Songs/poems will be practiced/recited daily for a week in a
  • 2. large group. During these times, students may be permitted to stand or perform hand motions, reducing restlessness. Students will also begin to practice the knuckle-counting manipulative to aid them in ordering months and identifying the number of days in each. Students will write their birth date on notecards and will then be asked to place themselves in order of birthdays to practice both writing and ordering. Students will continue practice through spelling games. Interactive games will allow the students to get up from their seats every now and then, reducing restlessness, especially those students with ADHD. Utilize Materials Preview Materials Teacher has previewed all materials not created by her to verify age and level appropriateness. Prepare Materials The teacher creates presentations and any handouts using MS PowerPoint and MS Word. The teacher assures that all equipment (SmartBoard and music player) is working properly prior to the lesson. Notecards will also be provided by the teacher for the birthday ordering activity. Prepare Environment The classroom desks will be set up in a horseshoe shape with the SmartBoard at the front center. Desks will be diagonal, facing in and forward to provide more space for the students and to focus their attention more so to the front of the classroom. Each desk will contain a small, individual whiteboard and dry erase marker to be used for certain activities. Prepare the Learners To prepare the students, the teacher presents the overall plan and objectives for the lesson. Provide the Learning Experience During the introductory phase of the lesson, the teacher presents materials using the SmartBoard located at the front center of the classroom. Music will be played from the music player also at the front of the classroom, easily accessible to the teacher for a smoother transition.
