This lesson is intended for a fourth grade class of 20 students from diverse backgrounds. Over three days, students will work in groups to research and create posters about different winter holidays. On day one, the teacher will introduce the assignment using a PowerPoint presentation. Students will then complete an individual online research activity. On day two, students will use technology like Zello to coordinate their group project from home. Finally, on day three, students will create posters displaying what they learned about their assigned holiday. The teacher will evaluate students based on the accuracy of their posters, individual reflections on what they learned, and participation in a video recording assignment.

General Characteristics
The audience for whom this lesson is intended for are fourth grade students ages nine to
ten. There are eleven girls and nine boys. It is a diverse class including two Muslims, three
Jewish, and two African American students. No students have identified learning disabilities.
Entry Competencies
The students have all heard of each of the four holidays already. They also have experience using
Zello and Webquests. In addition, the students have worked with groups to create presentations
before.
Learning Styles
There are 12 visual learners, 6 kinesthetic learners, and 2 linguistic learners in the class.
S-State Objective
Students will create a representation of their group's assigned holiday after having the
holidays introduced to them, completing a webquest designed to help them research the holiday,
and discussing the assignment with group member using Zello. The students' posters
representing the holidays will have 100% accurate information on them. This will take three days
to complete.

Methods
The method chosen to use for the lesson is large group instruction in addition to a small group
project.

2. Media
PowerPoint- The teacher uses a PowerPoint she created to introduce the lesson. The slides she
prepared offer a basic overview of each holiday which includes Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan,
and Kwanza. PowerPoint is a feature already offered on the classroom's computer.
SmartBoard- The PowerPoint will be shown to the class with the use of the SmartBoard. There is
already one in the room, and this is a way to make sure everyone can see the PowerPoint.
Blog- The teacher will send home a link to the classroom's blog for parents. They will receive
updates on what is going on in class from it.
Webquest- The teacher created a Webquest for students to do in class to help them research and
learn more about their holidays. They will individually complete it using computers at the
school.
YouTube- The video the students create will be uploaded to YouTube, so it can be shared on the
class blog.
Zello- Students will be able to use Zello to talk to their group members from home the night
before they create their project. This will help them coordinate their plans for the poster and
compare notes they each took on the holiday. This will prepare them for the next day's work.
Phone- The teacher will use her phone to record each student's "happy holiday message" and
then email it to her computer. The students will use their phones for the Zello project at home.
They all have smartphones.
Movie Maker- The teacher will use movie maker to put together all the clips of the "happy
holidays" assignment. This will then be uploaded to YouTube.

3. Computers- Computers will be used for several parts of this lesson. The teacher will use hers for
PowerPoint, Blog, YouTube, and Movie Maker. The students will use the computers provided at
the school for the webquest assignment.
Materials
Poster boards, markers, scissors, colored paper, and glue will be used to create the representation
of each group's holiday.
U- Utilize Materials
Preview Materials
The teacher previews her PowerPoint and blog before the first day. She makes sure the
computers and SmartBoard are working and available. She makes sure the blog is up and
working. She checks to make sure her phone has enough storage to record the videos.
Prepare Materials
The teacher has the PowerPoint pulled up before the students get there. She has already written
the link to the blog on the board for the students to copy down. She has her phone charged and
on her desk ready to use. On the last day, she has all of the poster making materials set out before
the students arrive.
Prepare the Environment
Since most of the lesson is small group work, the teacher arranges the desks in the classroom
together in groups of four. This will prepare the class for group work without having to interrupt
the lesson to move the desks. The teacher has already reserved the computer lab for the second
day. The rest of the media and materials are in the class and already set up. The morning of the
third day, she will put out all of the poster making materials for each group.

4. Prepare Learners
To prepare her students, the teacher introduces the lesson with the PowerPoint which gives an
overview of the materials and also includes a brief description of what they class will be coin
over the next three days. It will include what is expected of the class and gives out motivation for
participating.
Provide Learning Experience
The teacher uses general showmanship techniques including facing the students when she's
talking and using a projecting voice. She has the desks positioned to be able to see the front
center of the room easily.She keeps the SmartBoard turned off when she is not referring to it. The
computer lab is set up to where she can see all of their screens from her desk in the middle.

Large Group
The students must be observant during the PowerPoint to know what is required of them over the
next three days. If they do not pay attention, then they will not know what they need to do and
how they are being evaluated.
Small Group
The most important part of this lesson is the group poster. They are assigned holidays that no one
in the group celebrates, so they are required to research and learn more about it. The students will
write a reflection at the end, and explain what role each student did to assist with the project.
This holds everyone accountable for participating in the assignment.
Individual

5. The students are responsible for individually doing the "happy holiday" language assignment.
They will be graded individually on that along with their research they did during the webquest.
They are required to turn in the information they found, the teacher knows if they researched the
holiday like they were instructed to do.

Evaluate the Methods and Materials
The teacher will review the students' reflections. She will look to see if they enjoyed the lesson
along with if it was effective for learning more about different holidays. She will also check to
see if everyone equally participated in the assignment.
Evaluate overall instruction
The teacher will review the posters to see if the student gained a better understand of their
assigned holiday. She will take this along with the reflections and the participation of the
students into consideration when deciding if this method was the best to teach this lesson.
