Wednesday ASSURE
I. Analyze the Learners: I will be teaching about the Olympics to a 3rd
grade class, 10
boys and 12 girls, 80% white, 15% African-American and 5% Latino. Two of the
students have IEPs for learning disabilities. The students have previously studied
geography of the United States and a few other countries. This unit will build on this
prior knowledge.
II. State Objectives: My third grade students will describe and depict the culture of a host
country for the Olympics, utilizing Pinterest, Voki’s, research, and cooperative grouping,
with 80% accuracy by the end of the day.
III. Select Methods, Media and Materials: In order to meet the different learning styles of
my students, I will use the following methods, media, and materials throughout the day’s
lesson:
a. Pinterest- Students will utilize a Pinterest board that I created. They will
complete activities about different countries involved in hosting the Olympic
games. The students will also add pins, with foods, music, and other cultural
aspects of the country they are assigned to research.
b. Research- Students will utilize the library in the school to research things about
the different countries. They can use nonfiction books, informational text, and
encyclopedias to look up facts about their projects to present using a PowerPoint
and Voki.
c. Voki- For part of the end of the day project, students will create a voki that
portrays the culture of their groups country in some way, whether that be
2. language, discussing food, music, history, or just the appearance of their voki
created. Students will present these to the class at the end of the day along with
the PowerPoint.
d. PowerPoint- Students will create a PowerPoint poster with 5-6 facts about their
culture, and it must include pictures and what year this country hosted the
Olympics. They will create their PowerPoint poster in groups of two along with
their vokis.
IV. Utilize Media and Materials: I will preview and make the Pinterest board created for
my students private. I will also preview library material to make sure that the material is
age appropriate and provides good information for my third grade students. The learning
environment will be conducive to what I want the students to do. The desk will be
arranged in pairs around the room for the different groups and a country name will be
placed at each pair of desks, along with a computer. The computer will be from the
classroom set of laptops. Finally, I will reserve the library for the morning, to allow my
students to conduct a good amount of research in order to develop their projects.
V. Require Learner Participation: To engage students, I will throw a blow up globe in the
air and have a student catch it. When they catch it, I will ask them what country is closest
to their right thumb. I will write that countries name up on the board and start our class
discussion. I will ask the students, “Do you think this country is similar to America? Do
you know if this country ever hosted the Olympics? What do you know about this
country?” Then I will tell them today we are going to learn about some of these countries
we do not know about. I will discuss how important a countries culture is to the opening
ceremonies. I will also discuss, for the athletes to show respect to the people from the
3. country they are competing in, they must know about the countries culture. Then, I will
break them into groups of two and place them at the prearranged desks with laptops. At
each pair of desks, will be a country name and laptops for the students to use later in the
lesson. The students will grab a piece of paper to take notes on, and they will line up to
go to the library. In the library, the students will use the resources provided such as
encyclopedias, informational text, and nonfiction books to look up important information
about their country. The students will utilize one of the two handouts I found on Pinterest
to help them narrow down which facts to include on their group PowerPoint poster. Once
we finish in the library, we will head back to the room to create their projects that they
will present to the rest of the class.
The first project they will create is a voki that depicts in some way someone from
that country. This can either be through the language, the appearance, etc. In their voki,
they must include some aspect of the countries culture, whether it be about the music,
food, religion, etc. Some piece of the culture must be discussed along with what year the
country hosted the games. In addition to the creation of a voki, the groups will be asked
to create a PowerPoint poster about the country they were given with at least 5-6 facts
about the country. This poster will be presented to the class and then hung in the hall for
the rest of the school to see as they walk by. Finally, the students will use the information
found and find aspects about the culture on Pinterest. They will add it to my pre-created
board that I mentioned earlier.
VI. Evaluate and Revise: To assess the students’ knowledge on the subject and objectives
throughout I will do the following:
4. a. Circulate the room as the students are working together to make sure that all
students are participating. As they are working, I will randomly ask them specific
questions about the country they are working on, and I will ask them for evidence
to support their answers.
b. During the discussions, I will listen to see where the student’s baseline knowledge
was and where it ends up.
c. I will watch their Voki’s and make sure that the culture is depicted in more than
one way. They could have chosen from multiple aspects such as language,
appearance, music, food, and more.
d. I will look at their PowerPoint posters to make sure that 5-6 facts are included and
that they are accurate.
e. Last, I will look at Pinterest to see what each group pinned about their culture to
verify that they accurately found something that represented that countries
culture.
