Love in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and in the...
"My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep; the more I give to thee, the more I have for
both are infinite." (Act 2, scene 2, 146) Love is a concept that has been around from the beginning
of time and will most likely carry on until the end. Everyone has their own love, and their of
definition of what love actually means. Probably the most well known love stories of all time in the
play from the 15th century, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare tells the tale of young love
and fatal misfortune. With the same message the musical from the 50's, West Side Story directed by
Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise carries out a similar story of young love and tragedy. Although
some are touched by these love stories, others believe it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Last of all The Capulets and the Montagues had a falling out in the town square. "If you ever disturb
our streets again, Your lives shall pay the forfeit of peace." (act 1, scene 1, 104) Princes were still
around at the time he had the power to do whatever he wanted. Romeo was banished from Verona
because of the princes decision. So due to the setting of the 15th century the conflicts were tailored
to accommodate the laws and customs of the time.
West Side Story taking place in the 1950's has different conflicts due to the time period. To begin
the conflict between the two groups was completely racial. The two groups consisted of gangs. The
Sharks were the Puerto Ricans and the Jets were the Americans. In several instances throughout the
musical the Jets refer to the Sharks by their race and tell them to return to Puerto Rico because they
do not belong in the United States. Racism became a more popular idea in the 20th century due to
the increase in immigration to the United States that was not present in the past. Next the mediator
of the decisions was the lieutenant. Being a white the lieutenant also had a preference toward the
Americans. Several times he gave lesser punishment to the Jets and and provided them with more
rights. In another time that type of racism would not have been tolerated for a person with authority.
Lastly of all the concept of rumbles were increasingly common at the time specifically between
gangs. At the rumble

Friar Lawrence
Friar Lawrence Friar Laurence is presented as a holy man who is trusted and respected by the other
characters. The Friar's role as the friend and advisor to Romeo and Juliet highlights the conflict
between parents and their children within the play. The centrality of the Friar's role suggests a
notable failure of parental love. Romeo and Juliet can't tell their parents of their love because of the
quarrel between the two families. In their isolation, Romeo and Juliet turn to the Friar who can offer
neutral advice. At first, the Friar can't believe how quickly Romeo has abandoned Rosaline and
fallen in love with Juliet, so he reminds Romeo of the suddenness of his decisions. The Friar uses
the formal language of rhyme and proverbs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And when those plans end in tragedy, we're not sure if she should blame him or not. He's the guy,
after all, who gives Juliet the concoction that puts her in a deep, deep, slumber that fools her family
(and Romeo) into thinking she's dead. But notice that he does achieve his goal, even if it wasn't
quite in the way he intended–unless, that is, you think he somehow planned this tragedy all

Comparing Luhrmann's Romeo And Juliet
Romeo + Juliet
Romeo + Juliet is a modernization of the known tragic story about Romeo and Juliet. The movie
was released in 1996 and was directed by Baz Luhrmann, who is a very well known director who
directed The Great Gatsby, which also had Leonardo DiCaprio in the leading role. The Great Gatsby
won two Oscars and several other awards, alongside many nominations.
Romeo + Juliet is quite different compared to the original Romeo and Juliet tragedy, which was
written by William Shakespeare. In the movie it shows how the original tragedy would have looked,
if it had happened in the modern time, however they still choose to keep the original language from
the play by William Shakespeare. The movie somehow manages to create an exiting mix between
old and new. Alongside very good casted actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio who is very well known
for many roles in award winning movies, his role is Romeo in the movie. Juliet is played by, Claire
Danes who is well known for her big role in Terminator 3.
Both actors play the their leading roles perfectly and with a fantastic mix between being emotional,
and dramatic which is what Romeo and Juliet is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The movie separates itself from many other movies, which is why it makes it even more exiting to
watch. It shows a very different aspect touch of the original Romeo and Juliet story, an almost
complete modernization of the play except the language. However if you are enjoying the original
tragedy written by William Shakespeare then this movie might not be the right match for your
movie taste, as it adds a modern twist which for some might be too much in a certain perspective.
Even though that most people either have heard, or read the story by William Shakespeare, the
movie somehow still manages to make the story exciting to watch from beginning to end and makes
it interesting to watch with a different approach to the original story from

Women In Renaissance Family And Society In William...
Interpreting the role of women in Renaissance family and society through William Shakespeare's
Romeo and Juliet Dreher points out that "studies of marriage and the family in Shakespeare have
opened up a lively debate about Renaissance sex roles" (p.2). Gerlach, Almasy, and Daniel claim
that "although Shakespeare reflects and at times supports the English Renaissance stereotypes of
women and men and their various roles and responsibilities in society, he is also a writer who
questions, challenges, and modifies those representations." His play Romeo and Juliet gives an
insight into this patriarchal society dominated by men. It helps us understand how traditions, rank,
and their fathers' or husbands' will affected women's everyday life, their opportunities, as well as the
decisions they had to make. On the other hand, the story of ... Show more content on

They are thought of as inferior, weaker, and more as objects to possess. Never would they be called

pleasing their husband, and bearing children are the life goals of which a woman should dream."
(Thomas) At the very beginning of the play two people are talking, and one of them called Sampson
says the following: "True; and therefore women, being the weaker vessels,/are ever thrust to the
wall/therefore I will push/Montague's men from the wall, and thrust his maids/to the wall." – This
suggests that women are feebler than men; they are no way equal to them, Sampson is talking dirty
about these females making us think men can be make them subject to anything. However, there is
one character in the play, who will not accept this and let her fate be dominated by the men in her
family and others who want to possess her. Thus, „Shakespeare portrays Juliet in a way that defies
these standards for women and gives her an uncommon strength contrary to society."

The Character Of Romeo Montague in William Shakespeare's...
The Character Of Romeo Montague in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Romeo is one of
the main characters in Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet" and is portrayed as a tragic figure,
who is guided by his destiny. Shakespeare initially introduces Romeo to be a romantic
sentimentalist, who is over–obsessed with his own emotions. Romeo, however, loses these
personality traits towards the end of the play, and becomes more mature after falling deeply in love
with Juliet. His love for her is strong and over–whelming, and Shakespeare vividly represents this
by dramatic visual moments throughout the play, culminating in the tragic climax of Romeo's
suicide, to join with his Juliet in death. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is one of the many themes that Shakespeare provides to suggest foreboding early on in the play.
The omen is ambiguous as it firstly implies Romeo is worrying about something that will not
happen and is generally nervous about arriving uninvited. However, it could imply that in going to
the Ball, he will meet Juliet, which will cause drastic events to happen, and eventually lead to both
their deaths. This is one of the main themes during the play and is successfully entwined in Romeo's
script to introduce foreboding to the audience without the character realising it. He disregards the
omen, and continues with his friends to the Ball. On arrival, he seeks Rosaline, but his attentions
rapidly divert to Juliet Capulet, "She seems to hang upon the cheek of night" displays Romeo's
persona to be fickle and to have a fluctuating nature. He had before thought Rosaline to be beautiful,
but now he sees Juliet as the most beautiful woman in the world. This is one of the more romantic
traits of Romeo, and Shakespeare uses many metaphors and similes in Romeo's speech and
successfully interlaces them to represent the poetic and child–like wonder that Romeo experiences
when he sets eyes on Juliet. Romeo's role is consistent throughout as 'The Romantic Lover',

Act I Scene V of Romeo and Juliet as an Effective Piece of Drama In this assignment, I will
comment in details about Act I Scene V. This scene can be separated into seven short sections,
which have different events and mood. So I will comment on each section by using references to
important developments and characters. Also, I will use concrete examples of the languages used by
Shakespeare as evidence of each character's role. In this scene, we are introduced to Juliet's family
and to Romeo. Their love is doomed from the start, because they belong to rival families. Their love
will grow so strong to become more important than their life. As for Act I Scene V, it consists of

The speeches following "Beauty too rich for use for earth too dear!" and "shows a snowy dove
trooping with crows as yonder lady o'er her fellows shows" tell us how beautiful does Romeo think
Juliet is. There are some literary language used in this section such as alliteration of 't' sounds from
Romeo's speech "teach the torches to" and 's' sounds from the following words "So–show–snowy".
Romeo uses the above kinds of poetic expressions to say that Juliet's beauty is above everybody
else's. In section 4, Tybalt recognises Romeo. He hates all Montagues therefore he tries to expel
Romeo from his uncle's house impatiently. The quotations "What, dares the slave come hither" and
"To strike him dead I hold it not a sin" represents how Tybalt hates Montague. He uses very strong
and aggressive language and action. In contrast, Capulet responses very calmly and stops Tybalt as
he tries to attack Romeo immediately, but Tybalt keeps trying to expel him so Capulet becomes
increasingly angry. The following quotes "cock a hoop" and "go to! go to!" suggests his anger. The
appearance of Tybalt so early in the play and his aggressive behaviour towards Romeo are the signs
of how strong the hate between the two families is. His last speech, "Now seeming sweet convert to
bitterest gall" implies that Tybalt and Romeo will fight and Tybalt's

Different Presentations Of Love in William Shakespeare's...
Different Presentations Of Love in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet In Romeo and Juliet
there are many different types of love. The main type is the true love between Romeo and Juliet.
Another type of love is the materialistic love of possessions and power. Capulet and lady Capulet's
love for Juliet is the love the power they have over her. Capulet loves Juliet as to him she is
possession that he can gain a profit from by marrying her off. At the same time, he wants to marry
her off, because he loves her and thinks he is doing the best for her. Juliet does not want to be
married off, she tells him this and he disowns her at this point, because he is angry with her. " Hang

The friar shows that he loves Romeo because he marries him and Juliet knowing how much trouble
he will get into by doing so, but he also believes it will help bring the two families together. He
helps Juliet, as he knows that it would be in Romeo's best interest. The friar gives Juliet a poison to
make her look like she is dead so that she does not have to marry Paris and can still have Romeo.
Romeo, Benvolio and Mercutio are all friends. They have fraternal love for each other. Mercutio is a
fiery, concerned friend. His close relationship with Romeo leads to a fight with Tybalt where he
comes to the defence of Romeo and ends up dying for his friends. Mercutio puts his life at risk for
Romeo "my very friend, hath got this mortal hurt in my behalf, my reputation stained with Tybalt's
slander." Benvolio is Romeo's friend in a different way. He counsels Romeo and helps him with his
love for Rosaline. Benvolio suggests that Romeo going to the masked ball, will help him get over
Rosaline. "We must have you dance," they say because they want Romeo to find someone else other
than Rosaline. The Montagues have a different type of love with their children than the Capulets.

Lord Capulet Monologue
Loved ones, I welcome you all to this sorrowful place, to say goodbye to my beloved daughter,
Juliet. If Juliet was here with us today, she would be more than overwhelmed with the audience
attending her funeral. Standing here before you today is one of the hardest things I've ever had to
do. Words cannot describe the sorrow and loss I am feeling. Juliet was my wife and I's dearest, only
child. She meant the world to us. A very obedient child, yet extremely strong in her dedication to
love, rarely disobeying our wishes, only once... For her darling husband Romeo. Juliet was born in
the city of Verona, 13 years ago, and therefore will be the place she lays forever. Bringing two
families together, Juliet was the one to shed light in a dull situation. ... Show more content on

Through the use of emotive language, rhetorical questions, similes and inclusive language, I was
able to portray Lord Capulet's emotion and expression towards his daughter's death. By following
the required eulogy structure, I started my persuasive writing with a simple, yet formal introduction
which gave the audience an impression of Juliet's unique personality, I then ordered the three body
paragraphs in chronological order and ended with a strong, yet personal conclusion. By including
emotive language (e.g. sorrow, loss, saddens) I was able to represent a range of emotions felt by
Juliet's loved ones. I also included the persuasive techniques of attack, praise and inclusive
language. This was in order to understand that a number of people were feeling this great loss. The
rhetorical question (but why did God grant you but half a life?) allows the audience to wonder and
see things from Lord Capulet's point of view. Overall, the above choices I made allowed my eulogy
to become more emotive and captured the attention of the audience, to allow them to mourn
together over the loss of Lord Capulet's daughter,

How Is Love Presented In Romeo And Juliet
How love is presented in the first Act and a half of 'Romeo and Juliet'?
Throughout the first Act and a half of the tragic novel 'Romeo and Juliet', William Shakespeare
presents love as something beautiful but ominous simultaneously. He conveys this through the
perspectives and approach of different characters on love. Shakespeare is trying to inform us that the
idea of love may seem happy and joyful but it does not always result positively; love will also be
chaotic and destructive.
Shakespeare presents love as a supremely important and complex, especially for women. The
contemporary audience thought marriage was greatly significant, as you had to be married to have
children. Women in the Elizabethan times were married and had children from the age of fourteen
and so it is important for Juliet, 14, to get married as soon as possible. Lord Capulet's friend Paris,
wants to marry Juliet, but he approaches her father rather than Juliet. Paris approaching Lord
Capulet rather than Juliet was the traditional and more formal way according to the Elizabethan
public. However it seemed as if he was making a business deal. 'What you say to my suit?' This
exemplifies that Paris does not have any deep feeling for Juliet. He wants to marry Juliet so that, ...

Romeo and Juliet can't be with each other for long. There will always be disturbance and struggles
for Romeo and Juliet's romance. This scene on the balcony also illustrates Juliet's character that she

Who Is To Blame In Romeo And Juliet
1 The play is Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. Overall the theme of this play would be
one of love, and also the loss of love. The secondary character I have chosen to analyze is that of the
Friar Laurence. Of all the stupid buffoons throughout this play I believe the Friar to be the most at
fault. Not only was he the one responsible for marrying the two teenagers, but he perpetuated the
bad choices that both Romeo and Juliet made, inevitably leading to both of their deaths. I feel the
need to insert my opinion here however, and that is, that I hate everything about this play. I hate how
overrated it is, and how It's held in such high esteem as an oh so grand "love" story. I disagree with
these praises whole–heartedly. However instead of going into detail about why I hate it I will
discuss ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Friar Laurence, being an ordained "man of God", has the capacity to perform wedding
ceremonies, apparently in a formal and informal ways. Romeo and Juliet are in love, and that's
swell, two barely teenagers are in love with each other, but oh no, their parents hate each other. So
in a stroke of pure brilliance the Friar thinks to himself "oh hey maybe if I marry these two tweens it
will reconcile their two families and there will be peace at last". So not only marrying these two
tweens, but doing so secretly so it can blow up in the feuding parents faces, ultimately was doomed
to fail, and it did. As the only adult aware of Romeo and Juliet's undying love for each other (pun
intended) He should have been the voice of reason. At any point, even after marrying the two he
could have stepped forwards and said somethingto either one family or both of them, instead he
stood idly by as Juliet's father wants to marry his 13 yearold off to some random adult ( I know, I
know, they were different times), and still the Friar did nothing. The brilliant Friar Laurence then
gives Juliet a potion to make her appear dead because she doesn't wantto marry this other random

Romeo And Juliet Vs West Side Story Essay
Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by the playwright William Shakespeare. It talks about the
forbidden love between two people of rivaling families, and how it ends in tragedy. The writers of
the movie "West Side Story" took some inspiration from the play and turned it into a movie. In the
movie there are two gangs, the Sharks and the Jets, they both argue for a useless reason. Two lovers
meet at the ball and then there is a chain of events that happens that leads to tragedy like in the play.
Both the musical and the play have similar, but different themes which are affected by the setting,
characters, and plot. The similar but different themes of family loyalty in Romeo and Juliet, and the
theme gang and national loyalty in West Side ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet dance and kiss at the ball, and nobody sees and makes a fuss
out of it. However, in West Side Story when the lovers dance and kiss, Maria's brother, Bernardo
sees and makes Maria leave the party, and causes a fuss between the two gangs. This shows the
theme of the nature of love and hate. In Romeo and Juliet, Tybalt is Juliet's cousin while in West
Side Story Bernardo is Maria's brother. In Romeo and Juliet, the lovers get married while in West
Side Story, Maria and Tony only fantasize about their wedding. Another major difference between
the musical and the play is that in Romeo and Juliet the fight between Mercutio, Tybalt, and Romeo
was not planned and happened unexpectedly. In West Side Story, the rumble between the Jets and
the Sharks was planned. Another major difference is that in Romeo and Juliet Romeo commits
suicide, but in West Side Story Tony gets killed by Chino. Also, instead of Maria committing suicide
like Juliet, she stays alive. The writers of West Side Story probably did this to surprise the audience
or to keep them engaged. In Romeo and Juliet, the apothecary gives poison to Romeo so he can
commit suicide. In West Side Story Doc gives Tony the "poisonous" message that Maria was killed
by Chino. Some similarities between the movie and the play is that Maria was forced to marry
Chino like Juliet was forced to marry Paris. Another

Comparing Ethan Frome And Romeo And Juliet
Ethan Frome and Romeo and Juliet
Imagine finding the love of your life only to realize that you will never be together, such is the
tragedy in Ethan Frome and Romeo and Juliet. The two stories share similar plots involving
forbidden love and a tragic ending. Some characters in Romeo and Juliet correspond to those of
Ethan Frome, such as Mattie and Juliet and Ethan and Romeo. One area that Romeo and Juliet and
Ethan Frome are very different is their setting; Romeo and Juliet takes place long before Ethan
Frome which greatly affects the plot. In many ways, Ethan Frome is a modern–day interpretation of
Romeo and Juliet with distinct similarities and differences between the two works.

Mattie from Ethan Frome and Juliet from Romeo and Juliet are very similar. The narrator in Ethan
Frome compares the arrival of Mattie to "a bit of hopeful young life . . . like the lighting of a fire on

soft! What light through yonder window / breaks? / It is the east, and Juliet is the sun" (Shakespeare

works both Romeo and Ethan are very somber. The narrator describes Ethan as "a part of the mute,
melancholy landscape . . . with all that was warm and sentiment in him fast bound below the surface

and closed off. Benvolio, one of Romeo's closest friends, describes Romeo as "the bud bit with an

other characters describe them are very much

Romeo And Juliet Love Quotes
The play written by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, explores the theme of love, which
engages the modern audience. Shakespeare uses different language devices and quotes when
describing love, from Romeo and Juliet, to family love and forced love. This romantic tragedy is
about young star–crossed lovers that are stuck in a long lasting feud between their two families, the
Montagues and Capulets, fate ends up causing them to commit suicide in despair of their love. The
play empathises the fine line between love and hate but love is the driving theme throughout this
romantic tragedy. Romeo and Juliet's love is a mix between passionate, obsessive and romantic love.
"But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair
sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief, That thou her maid art far
more fair than she. Be not her maid, since she is envious. Her vestal livery is but sick and green ...

Cast it off." (2.2.2–9) In this quote, Romeo passionately, illustrates Juliet as a heavenly status, and
that she is so beautiful that the sun and the moon is jealous. Romeo's infatuation for Juliet has made
him forget about his first love with Rosaline, makes you wonder how easily Romeo falls in and out
of love. Shakespeare uses metaphors to explain the love Romeo has for Juliet by addressing her as
the 'sun' and the 'stars' and how the goddess of the moon and patron of virgins, is even jealous of
Juliet's radiance. The use of metaphors lets the audience, use their imagination to create an image of
Juliet's beauty. Romeo's love for Juliet is passionate and obsessive, but the love between her and her

Themes Of Love And Hate : William Shakespeare 's Romeo And...

Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet "People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can
be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."–Nelson
Mandela Romeo and Juliet is a play about two young lovers, whose love was for destruction from
the beginning because of the hatred between the two families, Montagues and Capulets. Therefore,
the themes of love and hate are very important in the play as the plot is driven by these two themes.
Shakespeare brings out the love between the two rivals through Romeo and Juliet and their
relationships with the Friar and the Nurse. I want to argue that in the play, the themes of love and
hate are closely linked. To show this, I have selected some of the most important scenes in the play,
which illustrate the idea that love and hate are closely bound together. The first example is the
chorus, which is found at the beginning of the play, in the prologue. It is a short summary of what
the play is about. The chorus is in the form of a sonnet and sonnets were often associated with love
in the time of Shakespeare. However, the words of the chorus seem to emphasize the idea of hate
although there are some words about love. "From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil
blood makes civil hands unclean." (Prologue, 3–4). These two lines are about the feud between the
families. It shows that it is a feud,

Examples Of Dramatic Irony In Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare wrote the play The Tragedy Romeo and Juliet in the late
1500s, set in Verona, Italy. The story is about two lovers banned from each other who fall in love,
and kill their self so they can always be together. Shakespeare used lots of irony to demonstrate how
love can make you do crazy things. Romeo and Juliet was full of irony for example when the
audience knew that juliet was going to kill themselves but nobody else in the movie knew, is an
example of dramatic irony. Another example of dramatic irony is when the audience knew that
Romeo was in love with Juliet, while Benvolio and Mercutio thought he was still in love with
Rosaline.. An example of situational irony is when the Montagues and Capulets didn't

The Nurse And Friar Lawrence In Shakespeare's Romeo And...
Do the intentions behind an action or the outcome of that action hold more significance? When
someone tries to do something to help the people they care about, they should not be criticized, even
if the outcome is undesirable. Two characters in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet who acted
with pure intentions were the Nurse and Friar Laurence. They both tried their best to make Romeo
and Juliet's relationship work out, and even though it was often difficult they never gave up. These
characters were also essential to preventing possibly worse outcomes. The Nurse and Friar Laurence
are not to blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet because they always tried their hardest and did
what they thought would be best and without them, the characters would have been worse off. The
Nurse should be celebrated for her role in the play because her actions were influenced by her close
relationship with Juliet. While some would argue that the Nurse should have gone to Lord and Lady

Both of them tried their hardest to help Romeo and Juliet, and even within the time constraints
placed upon them they managed to create a plan that would've worked had fate not been against

were in disarray. Had the Nurse and Friar Laurence not gotten involved in their love story, Romeo
and Juliet's death would not have had the powerful impact they did on the people and the town of
Verona. A town that was riddled with hatred and fighting was turned to a town of unity and peace.

possible outcomes, and if someone with a pure heart and intentions tried with all their might to do

The Plays of William Shakespeare
Shakespeare's Plays William Shakespeare, a British playwright and poet, is born in 1564. The exact
day is not known. Shakespeare is baptized on April 25, so they say his birthday is April 23, 1564
(Boyce, Shakespeare). As an infant, he survives the plague that kills tons of people living near him.
He is the son of John and Mary Arden Shakespeare. "His father is a prosperous and prominent
tradesman, bailiff, and alderman, who suffered a decline in fortune and prestige" (Burt,
Shakespeare). His father ran into financial difficulties in Shakespeare's teen years and did not
recover until 20 years later with the help of William. His mother is a member of the next higher
social class. There is no record of Shakespeare's education, although he did attend Stratford
Grammar School (Boyce, Shakespeare). At eighteen, Shakespeare marries Anne Hathaway and later
they have three children (Burt). Shakespeare writes many tragedies, romances, and comedies. Three
main plays are Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Macbeth. Between 1593 and 1596, Shakespeare

Foils In Romeo And Juliet Essay
William Shakespeare uses a certain technique in his playwriting in order to exaggerate and make
character's certain traits stand out to the audience – foils. A character's foil is another character that
is the complete opposite of them, which accentuates the qualities of both characters. One of these
important pairs of antithetical characters in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is the Nurse, who works
by caring for the Capulet household, and Lady Capulet, the wife of Lord Capulet and stern mother

While Lady Capulet is Juliet's mother, the Nurse is the actual motherly figure in her life. Lady
Capulet is concerned with what's best for herself and Lord Capulet, while the Nurse cares for what
Juliet really wants. Lady Capulet never had time to be there for Juliet as a child, and it was the
Nurse who filled that role in. Lady Capulet becomes a vile character full of hatred, and one of the
opposers to the protagonist, Romeo. The Nurse, on the other hand, listens to what Juliet has to say,
and cares for her. The Nurse brings out the negative, ignorant traits in Lady Capulet, and Lady
Capulet brings out the Nurse's positive characteristics. As the main comedic character in the play,

Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis
The tale of the Titanic is one of the most famous shipwreck stories in history. It still boggles
people's minds how such a mighty and unsinkable ship hit an iceberg and sunk only three days into
her maiden voyage. Some historians believed it was a flaw in the building of the ship, while others
believe it was a flaw in the boiler rooms due to them catching fire and damaging the ship
beforehand. Everyone can agree that many things went wrong that led to the deaths of 1,500
innocent lives that fateful April night. In literature, when a character has a major flaw it can also
lead to disastrous events like the sinking of the Titanic. Specifically in the play of Romeo and Juliet,
the characters Friar Laurence and Tybalt both have major flaws that affect the outcome of the play.
Friar Laurence's hypocrisy and Tybalt's lack of control over his anger and his inability to tame it are
some of their flaws that helped lead to the death of Romeo and Juliet. The biggest flaws Friar
Laurence had in the play was his hypocrisy and how he underestimated two suicidal teenagers
which led to most of the problems Romeo and Juliet faced. In many scenes, the Friar keeps telling
the children to be careful and not rush into romantic situations so quickly. After he says that, he
immediately goes and marries the both of them. This was the first mistake that led to many
problems. After Juliet finds out Romeo has been banished to Mantua, she runs to the Friar and says
she is going to kill herself. Luckily, the Friar stops her and devises a plan to hopefully bring her and
Romeo together safely forever. Shakespeare writes, "Take thou this vial, being then in bed, And this
distilled liquor drink thou off; When presently through all thy veins shall run A cold and drowsy
humour, for no pulse" (A1,S1,L 95–100) The Friar has given Juliet a vial that will make her fall
asleep and appear dead for forty–two hours. He does this, knowing that the family will put her in the
royal tomb where she will escape safely when she awakens. The plan's biggest mistake ends up
being the letter to Romeo telling him of this plan. Instead of delivering the letter himself or telling
Romeo the plan before going into action he just hopes Friar John will deliver the

Literary Devices In Romeo And Juliet
Literary Devices of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare's play The Tragedy of
Romeo and Juliet contains an extraordinary amount of different literary devices to make the plot
more interesting, but this essay will be focussing on his soliloquies, asides, and monologues. A
soliloquy allows the audience to know a character's inner thoughts by being expressed aloud, but
meant for no one else to hear on stage. During an aside the character talking will break the fourth
wall and speak directly to the audience. A monologue is used between characters for dialogue,
usually given in the form of a lengthy speech. Although a soliloquy and a monologue sound similar
in definition the two are very different, allow me to explain. As mentioned

Porphyria's Lover And My Last Duchess Essay
Love is the most dominant theme in Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet'. It is presented as infatuation
which is proven to be a force so strong that it literally consumes the two lovers. Although it is only
alluded in Browning's dramatic monologues The Laboratory, the speaker arguably loves her
husband as she seeks to rid herself of his lover thereby reclaiming him as her own. Narcissism is
seen in both Porphyria's Lover and My Last Duchess as both characters empower themselves by
making them the central focus of the monologue. The Duke is the least emotional of all the
characters depicted, yet his actions show a determination and strength of purpose which is evident in
the poems. Ultimately the force and power of the emotions; be it the inability to be separated as in
Romeo and Juliet, the desire for revenge in The Laboratory, ... Show more content on

A quotation which has connotations of religion is 'this holy shrine'. The religious overtones of the
conversation clearly imply that love can only be described through the pure association with God. In
this way their love becomes associated with the purity and passion of the divine. However in using
religious language to describe their feelings for each other, Romeo and Juliet tiptoe on the edge of
blasphemy. Romeo compares Juliet to an image of a saint that should be revered, a role that Juliet is
willing to play. 'O then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do,' would have been controversial along
with the other lines in the conversation. Similarly Browning also deals with a variety of
controversial issues in his dramatic monologues. The Catholic Church held this held that reverence
for saint's images acceptable, whereas the Anglican Church of Elizabethan times saw that as
blasphemous, a kind of idol worship. Juliet commits an even more profound blasphemy when she
calls Romeo 'the god of her idolatry,' effectively installing Romeo in Gods

Baz Luhrmann Romeo And Juliet Essay
Baz Luhrmann's 1996 modern adaption of 'Romeo and Juliet' set on the coastlines of the sizzlin'
Verona Beach takes an interesting spin on William Shakespeare's 400 year old classic. Gang wars,
drag, poison, guns, religious symbols and star–crossed love tied together with music video editing,
Luhrmann only leaves the plot and dialogue relatively untouched.
The Montagues and Capulets; two gangs with an ancient grudge rule over Verona Beach. When
Romeo Montague sneaks into the Capulet Christmas party to dance away his broken heart, he
stumbles upon Juliet Capulet and it is love at first sight. The two kindle their love and it only grows,

In this standoff between the Montagues and Capulets, Tybalt confronts Romeo, accusing him of
being a villain. But, to continue on with the summer coast theme, the director adds a sunset beach
backdrop to the scene. Also, as they begin fighting, Romeo does not engage, even as Tybalt attacks
him, caused by his love for Juliet and thus friendliness to the Capulet family, hence this scene stays
true to the original text. "Hold, Tybalt. Good Mercutio!" Luhrmann, also, does not change the plot in
which Romeo avenges the death of his friend, of whom Tybalt had slain. The director uses a number
of components to portray the 20th century context. The guns and weaponry used suggest this. Also
again, the clothing style. The Montagues are seen wearing shorts and Hawaiian shirts, thus
expressing the modern style of the film. In summary, this scene, in contrast to the original successful
communicated the message and story of the scene whilst depicting it in a different and more modern

The Different Attitudes to Love and Marriage Presented in...
The Different Attitudes to Love and Marriage Presented in Romeo and Juliet In "Romeo and Juliet",
the characters of Juliet, the Nurse and the Capulets have different attitudes to love and marriage.
The relationship between the characters reflects their attitudes for marriage. The Capulet's have a
distant relationship with their daughter Juliet, as was common in Shakespearean times. Juliet is
much closer to the Nurse who knew her from birth and she is Juliet's only friend. The relationship
between Lord and Lady Capulet is also strained as their views are commonly opposite. Despite the
fact that Juliet was not close to her father, she was expected to obey and be dictated by him and her

Capulet's attitude towards Juliet in this scene is more fatherly that he is later in the play. He thinks
that Juliet is too young and if she gets married she will be spoilt. He says "...too soon marr'd are
those too early made." Juliet is his only daughter , the rest of his children are dead and buried so he
doesn't want to let go of her until she is ready and when she does marry, he want her to marry
someone worthwhile. He says, "And she agreed, within her scope of choice Lies my consent and
fair according voice." He tells Paris that he will accept whoever she chooses so he trusts his
daughter's judgment. The audience had not met Juliet yet but the audience does get a good
impression of her. We know she is young as Capulet thinks so but, as Paris points out, "younger than
she are happy mothers made". Capulet talks about the party he is holding and he tells Paris about the
"earth–treading stars" that would be there. He then goes on to say that "Which on more view of
many, mine being one, May stand in numbers, though in reck'ning none." This gives the audience
the impression that she is more beautiful than the "earth–treading stars". At this point in the play, an
audience might think that Capulet is a loving father who cares about his daughter and who she is to

Comparing Baz Luhrmann's Romeo And Juliet
When people think about Shakespeare they may think it is serious and boring, but really it doesn't
have to be. The stories can be exciting and dramatic to all ages. A director named Baz Luhrmann
made a film that was a modern day version of Romeo and Juliet. In Baz Luhrmann's film of Romeo
and Juliet, he made decisions regarding actors, setting and costumes because he wanted to attract a
younger crowd since Romeo and Juliet is a story about two young lovers. One way Luhrmann
attracted a young crowd was by making the time and place of the film more modernized.
Luhrmann's film was located in Verona beach, NY, instead of filming in Verona, Italy. Filming in
Verona beach gives the film more of a interesting feel for young adults to watch, because some of
the play is in the city area and some is on the beach. In contrast to, Verona, Italy, where it was
filmed in a boring and old town. In addition, the film is set in the 1900's instead of the 1500's which
makes the film feel more modernized. Changing the setting of the film to be more modern appeals a
younger crowd because it makes the film less tedious. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the play, the Montagues wear hawaiian shirts, and the Capulets wear suits. At the Capulet's party,
Romeo dresses up as a knight and Juliet dresses up as an angel. This was clever of Luhrmann
because it relates to the phrase, "Carried away by a man in knight in shining armour." Another
clever decision he makes was when he has Tybalt dress as a devilish looking man. This is
coincidentally showing that he is Romeo's devil and is always trying to ruin Romeo's life. These
costumes make it easier to follow and understand the story, tell characters apart, and make the
Shakespeare story less formal. This contributes to the interest of the younger eye because a more

Factors that Influenced Shakespeare's Writing of Romeo and Juliet
Shakespeare was clearly influenced by the events of his time, and this is apparent especially in
Romeo and Juliet. To dismiss this play as a mere fable is to overlook some very important religious
and political changes of the time which are evidently woven into the storyline of the play.
Shakespeare's religious beliefs are uncertain, but it is known that his father was Catholic, and that he
lived in a time of religious stratification across both community and family ties. As a result of the
queen's toleration for vagueness in this area, people became accustomed to "religious tension and
confusion at a very personal level". Many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The youth of England however, were not content with the Settlement. This applies especially to the
Protestant youth who wanted "the Reformation to be completed on a model provided by Jean
Calvin's Geneva". Otherwise known as Puritans, they viewed the Settlement as a kind of
intermediate state. This extreme version of Protestantism, as well as the remaining Catholics whose
loyalty still belonged only to the Pope, continued to prevent the nation from reaching religious
stability.
Shakespeare, who was a loyal subject and supporter of the queen, offers a commentary on this
situation in Romeo and Juliet. The Queen's church reflected her own "likings for the externals of
Catholic worship" and she hated the "religious enthusiasm" of the Puritan movement. The
Settlement also allowed her to stay in control over the state religion, whereas the Puritan belief in
independent church government undermined her power and the national unity she tried to reach.
Although it would seem that Romeo and Juliet is a criticism of the well–known social rules that
regarded marriage as being contradictory to actual romantic love, a closer reading of the text shows
that the youth in the play are the ones whose actions result in violence and death.
Shakespeare seems to dispute the individual's

The Role of the Nurse in Act 3 Scene 5 of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet 'Romeo and
Juliet' is a tragic play about love and it's effects. The main protagonists are Romeo and Juliet, a pair
of teenagers, that fall in love, who seek help from various adults such as their parents, Friar
Lawrence and the Nurse, who all in some way let them down. In this essay I am concentrating on
the role of the Nurse and her relationship with Juliet. The Nurse is Juliet's confidant, she has cared

as her only ally. She (the Nurse) does try and defend Juliet, 'You are to blame, my Lord', however,
Lord Capulet is dismissive of her, 'you mumbling fool'. We see here that the Nurse is ineffectual, she
is viewed by her employers as a not very bright gossip, 'And why, my lady wisdom? Hold your
tongue'. Shakespeare successfully increases the dramatic tension as we see Juliet isolated with only
the Nurse to give her advice to extrapolate herself from the situation, 'Oh God, Oh Nurse how shall
this be prevented?'. The Nurse's advice is for Juliet to commit bigamy, 'Your first is dead or't were as
good he were'. It is essentially practical advice to marry socially successfully, to do as her parent's
wish, '…this is wisely done', but fails to take into account what her charge actually wants. There is a
lack of moral guidance here to as she seems to have no objection to bigamy so long as nobody

The Forbidden Romantic Love Between Romeo And Juliet Essay
The forbidden romantic love between Romeo and Juliet.
By Ashleigh Moseley.
Year 10 English: Mrs Shaw.
For this anthology about love I have chosen, and mainly centred around the topic of love that is
forbidden. With this type of love, comes many struggles and questions that I'm sure must go through
the minds of people in this situation. This is what happens with Romeo and Juliet in the Play written
by William Shakespeare in 1591. It will be a romance that will strongly challenge them, but as we
see it will not break the bond of love they have for each other. In this task I will try to describe the
pain, happiness, frustration, forgiveness, anger, and joy through a collection of shorts texts that
come with the topic of persecuted, and forbidden love.
Author unknown.
Juliet is willing to love Romeo no matter what. I think that this short poem describes the nature of
their love very well. This is how they think, act and live out their love for each other. I noticed that
the words in this poem: "you are my best friend, my human diary my other half", picture how they
feel about each other in a really clear way. Both from families that hate each other, yet they treat
each other as if they are there only hope.... Their best friend, the diary with which they right they
feelings for each other. This I feel clearly describes what it must feel like to love dearly someone

"Here's to my love! O true Apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus, I die with a kiss," p 578. Now
thanks to this Romeo has died and left Juliet to grief. So she decides to stab herself with a dagger
Romeo had on him so she could be with her lover until the end of times. She decides that being dead
is better than being without Romeo. First of all, Romeo should have never committed suicide and he
should have lived life for Juliet. If he had lived for Juliet's sake he would have been able to realize
that life goes on and he would have grieved sure, but he would have then, returned to Verona
someday to his old life and would have married someone else. In the play version he would have

As time passed this old grudge broke to utter hatred which led to chaotic civil fights. This dispute
had been ongoing for so long that it is forgotten why it had begun. Each member of each household
just had to pass on the streets and one way or another chaos would start. Shouting, crashing from
civil pillar to post, cursing and bawling, with or without knowing it they filled the good, innocent
and helpless citizens of Verona with trepidation and fury to have their cities peace and tranquillity so
senselessly disturbed by two uncontrollable and reckless households over a fight they did not know

from two separate opposing families and this makes their love impossible. It is impossible in the
sense that their love, feelings and emotions will never be accepted by both sides therefore they are

Shakespeare is a prominent figure present throughout history. His writing is credited as some of the
most influential pieces written in English literature. Shakespeare was born in 1564 in England. He

Much Ado About Nothing is a comedy nowhere near as dismal as its comparison, Romeo and Juliet.
This play is centered around a couple many see as fit for marriage, except the two "lovebirds" are
unable to see that for themselves. Though the courting couple may be older, their unbelievably
funny wit and inability to recognize their passion for eachother is what makes this play so great!
Though the plays are both of different genres, each encompassess aspects of an incredibly
entertaining, informative piece. I say this because of the themes Shakespeare presents throughout
the works, the complexity of characters, and the allegorical messages present throughout the plays.
Both of the works I have selected are entertaining and informative pieces because of the themes
Shakespeare presents throughout them. Shakespeare is known for incorporating sappy, cliched
romance into his plays. Unfortunately, with Shakespeare, romance does not exclude tragedy. In my
opinion, this is what makes his work so enjoyable! In Romeo and Juliet, the ongoing Montagues–
Capulet family feud leads young Romeo and Juliet to have a difficult time furthering their
relationship. Though madly in love, tragedy in the form of suicide strikes the both of them. In Act 5,

Romeo And Juliet by William Shakespeare
Romeo And Juliet by William Shakespeare In Romeo and Juliet the beauty and ardour of young love
is seen by Shakespeare as the irradiating glory of sunlight and starlight in a dark work. Discuss the
techniques that Shakespeare would have used to capture this dominating image of light. In the time
of Shakespeare, his plays would have been performed during the day, using natural light from the
open centre of the theatre. Since there could be no dramatic lighting and there was very little
scenery or props, Shakespeare used actors' lines and stage directions to supply the time of day and

Nearly all the elements of the play; conflict, death, poison are dark, while the love between Romeo
and Juliet is the only element which could be described as light in the play. Romeo speaks of Juliet
as a "bright angle shining in the night", again the vision that the love is the only light in the play and
is surrounded by darkness. Also, Juliet describes Romeo as "whiter than new snow upon a raven's
back". The language throughout the play also makes this comparison between light and dark.
Shakespeare's characters are continually cursing and banishing each other throughout the play, even
in the very first scene when Tybalt says "What drawn and talk of peace? I hate the word as I hate
heel and all Montagues and thee!". (Act 1, scene 1) However, this is contrasted by the beautiful
language between Romeo and Juliet. In the famous balcony scene Romeo says "It is the east and
Juliet is the sun, Arise, fair sun and kill the envious moon". This further illustrates the idea that their
young love is seen as the light in the play, as Romeo refers Juliet to the sun. When Romeo meets
Juliet he uses a metaphor to describe her "She doth teach the torches to burn bright" He is saying
that she is so beautiful her beauty outshines the torches. This tells the audience that she is supposed
to be very beautiful.

Baz Luhrmann essay–topic 1 by Hayley Bue
Baz Luhrmann's use of cinematic language becomes more advanced through each film as
technology develops and the audience becomes more modern, demanding better produced films. His
story telling techniques become more and more complex to enable the audience to feel as if they are
participating in the film. His first two films (Strictly Ballroom and Romeo and Juliet) are definitely
not naturalistic as everything about the films is overdone. I feel however that The Great Gatsby is
more natural in terms of theatrical elements such as costumes, characters and providing a film
instead of a play. Overall Baz Luhrmann has evolved as a director from Strictly Ballroom to Romeo

This could be because it is not part of the red curtain trilogy. There is the over exaggeration of
parties, cars and alcohol but in this day and age, it is normal for us to experience that. Gatsby may
be unnatural in his love for Daisy and his made up world but there are people like that in real life.
The camera movements and shots are smoother and blend into the film rather than stand out. For
instance the there is a low angle that zooms into Gatsby standing proud behind the window, not just
a low angle shot that suddenly cuts to another shot like in Strictly ballroom. The drama in the movie
was also dulled down, the gunshot to Gatsby's back wasn't overly exaggerated and Gatsby's fight
with Tom was so violent.
In conclusion, Baz Luhrmann advances most of his cinematic language through each movie. He
provides more complex story telling techniques to incorporate the audience. His first two films are
highly theatrical while he toned down his theatrics in The Great Gatsby making it a more natural
theme. Baz Luhrmann has evolved in his directing from Strictly Ballroom to Romeo and Juliet to
The Great Gatsby.

concept for a modern audience to relate to. To enforce this idea, the director had to make sure of a
few things. The first being to make sure the audience could easily accept that Romeo is a naive guy,
hoping for love to come his way. And secondly, Juliet being so innocent she could fall in love with
Romeo so easily. These ideas are portrayed in believable characteristics when we first see Romeo
and Juliet in the film. When Romeo makes his debut in the movie, he is seen depressed. He is seen
smoking a cigarette whilst writing poetry and glaring aimlessly up, at a grey cloudy day. Both the
cigarette and weather can be viewed a type of symbolism in the movie. The camera shots zoom on
Romeo's face, showing the audience his melancholic facials which informs them about how he is
feeling. The director uses these types of shots throughout the movie to show the raw emotional back
story of the characters. For example, when the priest is told that Romeo wants to marry Juliet, the
camera zooms into to show his face which is in awe and disbelief; informing the audience about
how the character, the priest, is feeling. In this instance for Romeo, these shots capture the impress
of a young lad who is lost and upset. Soon after this, Juliet is introduced as being a young girl with
an innocent personality. Her parents speak of her still being a stranger to the world by saying 'She is
still very young.' This phrase informs the audience that she is young, naive and can easily fall for
any handsome guy that comes her way. Through the movie this is done in many different ways, such
as dialogue, symbolism and in other scenes is done through the emphasis of the close–ups. The
director emphasises Juliet's

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Versus Baz Luhrmann's...
Romeo and Juliet is a play created by a famous playwright called William Shakespeare. Baz
Luhrmann adapted the play to create a modern version of Romeo and Juliet in 1996. There are many
similarities and differences in how Baz Lurhmann and Shakespeare portray the relationship between
Juliet and her parents. There are many times in the scene how Shakespeare uses language, structure
and form to present the relationship between Juliet and her parents, while Baz Luhrmann reveals
this relationship using different camera angles and diegetic and non diegetic sounds and shot types.
Shakespeare portrays the horrific relationship between Juliet and Lady Capulet as Juliet uses words
cleverly to deceive her mother. Line 93–94 'dead–is my poor ... Show more content on

In the play, the audience observes that the relationship between Juliet and her mother is dreadful as
the relationship is very formal between Juliet and Lady Capulet. Shakespeare portrays this by Juliet
calling her mother, 'Madam'. This implies that Juliet is distant with her mother as she addresses her
in a formal tone and this is not what you would call a mother. This illustrates that the relationship
between Juliet and Lady Capulet is so bad, that she is equal to a stranger. Baz Lurhmann does not
cut out this part, but, the camera angle faces Juliet to show the respect Juliet has for her mother. The
effect created by this action is the audience can see that Juliet has deference for her mother even
though she addresses her as a stranger, not as a mother and Luhrmann expresses this well. The
Nurse cannot be seen at this time, which makes it more personal between Juliet and her mother. Baz
Luhrmann and William Shakespeare both portray the terrible relationship between Juliet and her
mother in the same way. However Baz Luhrmann has an advantage of camera use to depict the
relationship between Juliet and her mother, whereas the audience will be watching all the characters
in the play and they will not gain a sense of personal relationship which Luhrmann portrays through
the camera angles. As a result, Baz Luhrmann and William Shakespeare both express the
relationship using similar

Internal Conflict Between Romeo And Juliet And Capulet's
Baz Luhrmann (1996) and Franco Zeffirelli (1968), both directors of Shakespeare's Romeo and
Juliet, both successful, both totally different interpretations of the play. Though the two
appropriations are only 28 years apart, they both are two completely different views of the play. The
two movies show different aspects of conflict from the Montague's and Capulet's. Romeo and Juliet
displays both internal and external conflict during the play. Shakespeare's play shows the theme of
conflict because Romeo and Juliet is as much about conflict as it is about love. The theme of
conflict shows that Romeo and Juliet's love was doomed from the start. Juliet's balcony scene is one

The Montague's wear more casual clothing where as the Capulet's wear more formal, westernised
clothing. This showed, the conflict between the two families, by the two wearing completely
different attires during the movie, showing that the two refuse to be anything alike. With the props
in the movie, they were more modernised. Guns and fast cars were used in the movie to show the
fight between Mercutio and Tybalt. The scene was filled with close up shots off all characters
involved in the scene. When showing all the characters, it was quickly panning between them all, to
show their reactions. The music that was being played had caused suspense in the deaths of both
Mercutio and Tybalt. The music was long and slow, which created tension within the scene. One of
the major sound effects in the fatal fighting scene was the sound of the thunder, which indicated an
upcoming storm metaphorically and literally. There had also been sound effects for the sun shots
being fired and the tires screeching against the

Love In Romeo And Juliet By William Shakespeare And In The...

  • 1. Love in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and in the... "My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep; the more I give to thee, the more I have for both are infinite." (Act 2, scene 2, 146) Love is a concept that has been around from the beginning of time and will most likely carry on until the end. Everyone has their own love, and their of definition of what love actually means. Probably the most well known love stories of all time in the play from the 15th century, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare tells the tale of young love and fatal misfortune. With the same message the musical from the 50's, West Side Story directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise carries out a similar story of young love and tragedy. Although some are touched by these love stories, others believe it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Last of all The Capulets and the Montagues had a falling out in the town square. "If you ever disturb our streets again, Your lives shall pay the forfeit of peace." (act 1, scene 1, 104) Princes were still around at the time he had the power to do whatever he wanted. Romeo was banished from Verona because of the princes decision. So due to the setting of the 15th century the conflicts were tailored to accommodate the laws and customs of the time. West Side Story taking place in the 1950's has different conflicts due to the time period. To begin the conflict between the two groups was completely racial. The two groups consisted of gangs. The Sharks were the Puerto Ricans and the Jets were the Americans. In several instances throughout the musical the Jets refer to the Sharks by their race and tell them to return to Puerto Rico because they do not belong in the United States. Racism became a more popular idea in the 20th century due to the increase in immigration to the United States that was not present in the past. Next the mediator of the decisions was the lieutenant. Being a white the lieutenant also had a preference toward the Americans. Several times he gave lesser punishment to the Jets and and provided them with more rights. In another time that type of racism would not have been tolerated for a person with authority. Lastly of all the concept of rumbles were increasingly common at the time specifically between gangs. • 2. Friar Lawrence Friar Lawrence Friar Laurence is presented as a holy man who is trusted and respected by the other characters. The Friar's role as the friend and advisor to Romeo and Juliet highlights the conflict between parents and their children within the play. The centrality of the Friar's role suggests a notable failure of parental love. Romeo and Juliet can't tell their parents of their love because of the quarrel between the two families. In their isolation, Romeo and Juliet turn to the Friar who can offer neutral advice. At first, the Friar can't believe how quickly Romeo has abandoned Rosaline and fallen in love with Juliet, so he reminds Romeo of the suddenness of his decisions. • 3. Comparing Luhrmann's Romeo And Juliet Romeo + Juliet Romeo + Juliet is a modernization of the known tragic story about Romeo and Juliet. The movie was released in 1996 and was directed by Baz Luhrmann, who is a very well known director who directed The Great Gatsby, which also had Leonardo DiCaprio in the leading role. The Great Gatsby won two Oscars and several other awards, alongside many nominations. Romeo + Juliet is quite different compared to the original Romeo and Juliet tragedy, which was written by William Shakespeare. In the movie it shows how the original tragedy would have looked, if it had happened in the modern time, however they still choose to keep the original language from the play by William Shakespeare. The movie somehow manages to create an exiting mix between old and new. Alongside very good casted actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio who is very well known for many roles in award winning movies, his role is Romeo in the movie. Juliet is played by, Claire Danes who is well known for her big role in Terminator 3. Both actors play the their leading roles perfectly and with a fantastic mix between being emotional, and dramatic which is what Romeo and Juliet is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The movie separates itself from many other movies, which is why it makes it even more exiting to watch. It shows a very different aspect touch of the original Romeo and Juliet story, an almost complete modernization of the play except the language. However if you are enjoying the original tragedy written by William Shakespeare then this movie might not be the right match for your movie taste, as it adds a modern twist which for some might be too much in a certain perspective. • 4. Women In Renaissance Family And Society In William... Interpreting the role of women in Renaissance family and society through William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Dreher points out that "studies of marriage and the family in Shakespeare have opened up a lively debate about Renaissance sex roles" (p.2). Gerlach, Almasy, and Daniel claim that "although Shakespeare reflects and at times supports the English Renaissance stereotypes of women and men and their various roles and responsibilities in society, he is also a writer who questions, challenges, and modifies those representations." His play Romeo and Juliet gives an insight into this patriarchal society dominated by men. It helps us understand how traditions, rank, and their fathers' or husbands' will affected women's everyday life, their opportunities, as well as the decisions they had to make. On the other hand, the story of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are thought of as inferior, weaker, and more as objects to possess. However, there is one character in the play, who will not accept this and let her fate be dominated by the men in her family and others who want to possess her. • 5. The Character Of Romeo Montague in William Shakespeare's... The Character Of Romeo Montague in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Romeo is one of the main characters in Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet" and is portrayed as a tragic figure, who is guided by his destiny. Shakespeare initially introduces Romeo to be a romantic sentimentalist, who is over–obsessed with his own emotions. Romeo, however, loses these personality traits towards the end of the play, and becomes more mature after falling deeply in love with Juliet. His love for her is strong and over–whelming, and Shakespeare vividly represents this by dramatic visual moments throughout the play, culminating in the tragic climax of Romeo's suicide, to join with his Juliet in death. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is one of the many themes that Shakespeare provides to suggest foreboding early on in the play. The omen is ambiguous as it firstly implies Romeo is worrying about something that will not happen and is generally nervous about arriving uninvited. However, it could imply that in going to the Ball, he will meet Juliet, which will cause drastic events to happen, and eventually lead to both their deaths. This is one of the main themes during the play and is successfully entwined in Romeo's script to introduce foreboding to the audience without the character realising it. He disregards the omen, and continues with his friends to the Ball. On arrival, he seeks Rosaline, but his attentions rapidly divert to Juliet Capulet, "She seems to hang upon the cheek of night" displays Romeo's persona to be fickle and to have a fluctuating nature. He had before thought Rosaline to be beautiful, but now he sees Juliet as the most beautiful woman in the world. This is one of the more romantic traits of Romeo, and Shakespeare uses many metaphors and similes in Romeo's speech and successfully interlaces them to represent the poetic and child–like wonder that Romeo experiences when he sets eyes on Juliet. This scene can be separated into seven short sections, which have different events and mood. So I will comment on each section by using references to important developments and characters. Also, I will use concrete examples of the languages used by Shakespeare as evidence of each character's role. In this scene, we are introduced to Juliet's family and to Romeo. Their love is doomed from the start, because they belong to rival families. Their love will grow so strong to become more important than their life. As for Act I Scene V, it consists of seven short ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The speeches following "Beauty too rich for use for earth too dear!" and "shows a snowy dove trooping with crows as yonder lady o'er her fellows shows" tell us how beautiful does Romeo think Juliet is. There are some literary language used in this section such as alliteration of 't' sounds from Romeo's speech "teach the torches to" and 's' sounds from the following words "So–show–snowy". Romeo uses the above kinds of poetic expressions to say that Juliet's beauty is above everybody else's. In section 4, Tybalt recognises Romeo. He hates all Montagues therefore he tries to expel Romeo from his uncle's house impatiently. The quotations "What, dares the slave come hither" and "To strike him dead I hold it not a sin" represents how Tybalt hates Montague. He uses very strong and aggressive language and action. In contrast, Capulet responses very calmly and stops Tybalt as he tries to attack Romeo immediately, but Tybalt keeps trying to expel him so Capulet becomes increasingly angry. The following quotes "cock a hoop" and "go to! go to!" suggests his anger. The appearance of Tybalt so early in the play and his aggressive behaviour towards Romeo are the signs of how strong the hate between the two families is. His last speech, "Now seeming sweet convert to bitterest gall" implies that Tybalt and Romeo will fight and Tybalt's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Different Presentations Of Love in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet In Romeo and Juliet there are many different types of love. The main type is the true love between Romeo and Juliet. Another type of love is the materialistic love of possessions and power. Capulet and lady Capulet's love for Juliet is the love the power they have over her. Capulet loves Juliet as to him she is possession that he can gain a profit from by marrying her off. At the same time, he wants to marry her off, because he loves her and thinks he is doing the best for her. They have fraternal love for each other. Mercutio is a fiery, concerned friend. His close relationship with Romeo leads to a fight with Tybalt where he comes to the defence of Romeo and ends up dying for his friends. Mercutio puts his life at risk for Romeo "my very friend, hath got this mortal hurt in my behalf, my reputation stained with Tybalt's slander." Benvolio is Romeo's friend in a different way. He counsels Romeo and helps him with his love for Rosaline. Benvolio suggests that Romeo going to the masked ball, will help him get over Rosaline. If Juliet was here with us today, she would be more than overwhelmed with the audience attending her funeral. Standing here before you today is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Words cannot describe the sorrow and loss I am feeling. Juliet was my wife and I's dearest, only child. She meant the world to us. Through the use of emotive language, rhetorical questions, similes and inclusive language, I was able to portray Lord Capulet's emotion and expression towards his daughter's death. By following the required eulogy structure, I started my persuasive writing with a simple, yet formal introduction which gave the audience an impression of Juliet's unique personality, I then ordered the three body paragraphs in chronological order and ended with a strong, yet personal conclusion. By including emotive language (e.g. sorrow, loss, saddens) I was able to represent a range of emotions felt by Juliet's loved ones. I also included the persuasive techniques of attack, praise and inclusive language. This was in order to understand that a number of people were feeling this great loss. The rhetorical question (but why did God grant you but half a life?) allows the audience to wonder and see things from Lord Capulet's point of view. Overall, the above choices I made allowed my eulogy to become more emotive and captured the attention of the audience, to allow them to mourn together over the loss of Lord Capulet's daughter, ... • 9. How Is Love Presented In Romeo And Juliet How love is presented in the first Act and a half of 'Romeo and Juliet'? Throughout the first Act and a half of the tragic novel 'Romeo and Juliet', William Shakespeare presents love as something beautiful but ominous simultaneously. He conveys this through the perspectives and approach of different characters on love. Shakespeare is trying to inform us that the idea of love may seem happy and joyful but it does not always result positively; love will also be chaotic and destructive. Shakespeare presents love as a supremely important and complex, especially for women. The contemporary audience thought marriage was greatly significant, as you had to be married to have children. Women in the Elizabethan times were married and had children from the age of fourteen and so it is important for Juliet, 14, to get married as soon as possible. Lord Capulet's friend Paris, wants to marry Juliet, but he approaches her father rather than Juliet. Paris approaching Lord Capulet rather than Juliet was the traditional and more formal way according to the Elizabethan public. However it seemed as if he was making a business deal. 'What you say to my suit?' This exemplifies that Paris does not have any deep feeling for Juliet. He wants to marry Juliet so that, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 10. Who Is To Blame In Romeo And Juliet 1 The play is Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. Overall the theme of this play would be one of love, and also the loss of love. The secondary character I have chosen to analyze is that of the Friar Laurence. Of all the stupid buffoons throughout this play I believe the Friar to be the most at fault. Not only was he the one responsible for marrying the two teenagers, but he perpetuated the bad choices that both Romeo and Juliet made, inevitably leading to both of their deaths. I feel the need to insert my opinion here however, and that is, that I hate everything about this play. I hate how overrated it is, and how It's held in such high esteem as an oh so grand "love" story. I disagree with these praises whole–heartedly. So in a stroke of pure brilliance the Friar thinks to himself "oh hey maybe if I marry these two tweens it will reconcile their two families and there will be peace at last". So not only marrying these two tweens, but doing so secretly so it can blow up in the feuding parents faces, ultimately was doomed to fail, and it did. As the only adult aware of Romeo and Juliet's undying love for each other (pun intended) He should have been the voice of reason. At any point, even after marrying the two he could have stepped forwards and said somethingto either one family or both of them, instead he stood idly by as Juliet's father wants to marry his 13 yearold off to some random adult ( I know, I know, they were different times), and still the Friar did nothing. • 13. Romeo And Juliet Vs West Side Story Essay Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by the playwright William Shakespeare. It talks about the forbidden love between two people of rivaling families, and how it ends in tragedy. The writers of the movie "West Side Story" took some inspiration from the play and turned it into a movie. In the movie there are two gangs, the Sharks and the Jets, they both argue for a useless reason. Two lovers meet at the ball and then there is a chain of events that happens that leads to tragedy like in the play. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet dance and kiss at the ball, and nobody sees and makes a fuss out of it. However, in West Side Story when the lovers dance and kiss, Maria's brother, Bernardo sees and makes Maria leave the party, and causes a fuss between the two gangs. This shows the theme of the nature of love and hate. In Romeo and Juliet, Tybalt is Juliet's cousin while in West Side Story Bernardo is Maria's brother. In Romeo and Juliet, the lovers get married while in West Side Story, Maria and Tony only fantasize about their wedding. Another major difference between the musical and the play is that in Romeo and Juliet the fight between Mercutio, Tybalt, and Romeo was not planned and happened unexpectedly. In West Side Story, the rumble between the Jets and the Sharks was planned. Another major difference is that in Romeo and Juliet Romeo commits suicide, but in West Side Story Tony gets killed by Chino. Also, instead of Maria committing suicide like Juliet, she stays alive. The writers of West Side Story probably did this to surprise the audience or to keep them engaged. In Romeo and Juliet, the apothecary gives poison to Romeo so he can commit suicide. • 15. Romeo And Juliet Love Quotes The play written by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, explores the theme of love, which engages the modern audience. Boucher 1 Thalia Boucher Ms. Yousaf ENG–1D1 2016–06–06 Themes of Love and Hate in William Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet "People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."–Nelson Mandela Romeo and Juliet is a play about two young lovers, whose love was for destruction from the beginning because of the hatred between the two families, Montagues and Capulets. Therefore, the themes of love and hate are very important in the play as the plot is driven by these two themes. Shakespeare brings out the love between the two rivals through Romeo and Juliet and their relationships with the Friar and the Nurse. I want to argue that in the play, the themes of love and hate are closely linked. To show this, I have selected some of the most important scenes in the play, which illustrate the idea that love and hate are closely bound together. The first example is the chorus, which is found at the beginning of the play, in the prologue. It is a short summary of what the play is about. The chorus is in the form of a sonnet and sonnets were often associated with love in the time of Shakespeare. However, the words of the chorus seem to emphasize the idea of hate although there are some words about love. "From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean." (Prologue, 3–4). These two lines are about the feud between the families. It shows that it is a feud, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When someone tries to do something to help the people they care about, they should not be criticized, even if the outcome is undesirable. They both tried their best to make Romeo and Juliet's relationship work out, and even though it was often difficult they never gave up. These characters were also essential to preventing possibly worse outcomes. The Nurse and Friar Laurence are not to blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet because they always tried their hardest and did what they thought would be best and without them, the characters would have been worse off. • 21. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis The tale of the Titanic is one of the most famous shipwreck stories in history. It still boggles people's minds how such a mighty and unsinkable ship hit an iceberg and sunk only three days into her maiden voyage. Some historians believed it was a flaw in the building of the ship, while others believe it was a flaw in the boiler rooms due to them catching fire and damaging the ship beforehand. Everyone can agree that many things went wrong that led to the deaths of 1,500 innocent lives that fateful April night. In literature, when a character has a major flaw it can also lead to disastrous events like the sinking of the Titanic. Specifically in the play of Romeo and Juliet, the characters Friar Laurence and Tybalt both have major flaws that affect the outcome of the play. Friar Laurence's hypocrisy and Tybalt's lack of control over his anger and his inability to tame it are some of their flaws that helped lead to the death of Romeo and Juliet. The biggest flaws Friar Laurence had in the play was his hypocrisy and how he underestimated two suicidal teenagers which led to most of the problems Romeo and Juliet faced. In many scenes, the Friar keeps telling the children to be careful and not rush into romantic situations so quickly. After he says that, he immediately goes and marries the both of them. This was the first mistake that led to many problems. After Juliet finds out Romeo has been banished to Mantua, she runs to the Friar and says she is going to kill herself. Luckily, the Friar stops her and devises a plan to hopefully bring her and Romeo together safely forever. Shakespeare writes, "Take thou this vial, being then in bed, And this distilled liquor drink thou off; When presently through all thy veins shall run A cold and drowsy humour, for no pulse" (A1,S1,L 95–100) The Friar has given Juliet a vial that will make her fall asleep and appear dead for forty–two hours. He does this, knowing that the family will put her in the royal tomb where she will escape safely when she awakens. The plan's biggest mistake ends up being the letter to Romeo telling him of this plan. Narcissism is seen in both Porphyria's Lover and My Last Duchess as both characters empower themselves by making them the central focus of the monologue. Romeo compares Juliet to an image of a saint that should be revered, a role that Juliet is willing to play. 'O then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do,' would have been controversial along with the other lines in the conversation. Similarly Browning also deals with a variety of controversial issues in his dramatic monologues. The stories can be exciting and dramatic to all ages. A director named Baz Luhrmann made a film that was a modern day version of Romeo and Juliet. In Baz Luhrmann's film of Romeo and Juliet, he made decisions regarding actors, setting and costumes because he wanted to attract a younger crowd since Romeo and Juliet is a story about two young lovers. One way Luhrmann attracted a young crowd was by making the time and place of the film more modernized. Luhrmann's film was located in Verona beach, NY, instead of filming in Verona, Italy. Filming in Verona beach gives the film more of a interesting feel for young adults to watch, because some of the play is in the city area and some is on the beach. In contrast to, Verona, Italy, where it was filmed in a boring and old town. In addition, the film is set in the 1900's instead of the 1500's which makes the film feel more modernized. Changing the setting of the film to be more modern appeals a younger crowd because it makes the film less tedious. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the play, the Montagues wear hawaiian shirts, and the Capulets wear suits. At the Capulet's party, Romeo dresses up as a knight and Juliet dresses up as an angel. This was clever of Luhrmann because it relates to the phrase, "Carried away by a man in knight in shining armour." Another clever decision he makes was when he has Tybalt dress as a devilish looking man. This is coincidentally showing that he is Romeo's devil and is always trying to ruin Romeo's life. These costumes make it easier to follow and understand the story, tell characters apart, and make the Shakespeare story less formal. • 27. Factors that Influenced Shakespeare's Writing of Romeo and... Factors that Influenced Shakespeare's Writing of Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare was clearly influenced by the events of his time, and this is apparent especially in Romeo and Juliet. To dismiss this play as a mere fable is to overlook some very important religious and political changes of the time which are evidently woven into the storyline of the play. Shakespeare's religious beliefs are uncertain, but it is known that his father was Catholic, and that he lived in a time of religious stratification across both community and family ties. As a result of the queen's toleration for vagueness in this area, people became accustomed to "religious tension and confusion at a very personal level". Many ... This applies especially to the Protestant youth who wanted "the Reformation to be completed on a model provided by Jean Calvin's Geneva". Otherwise known as Puritans, they viewed the Settlement as a kind of intermediate state. This extreme version of Protestantism, as well as the remaining Catholics whose loyalty still belonged only to the Pope, continued to prevent the nation from reaching religious stability. Shakespeare, who was a loyal subject and supporter of the queen, offers a commentary on this situation in Romeo and Juliet. The Queen's church reflected her own "likings for the externals of Catholic worship" and she hated the "religious enthusiasm" of the Puritan movement. The Settlement also allowed her to stay in control over the state religion, whereas the Puritan belief in independent church government undermined her power and the national unity she tried to reach. Although it would seem that Romeo and Juliet is a criticism of the well–known social rules that regarded marriage as being contradictory to actual romantic love, a closer reading of the text shows that the youth in the play are the ones whose actions result in violence and death. The Role of the Nurse in Act 3 Scene 5 of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet 'Romeo and Juliet' is a tragic play about love and it's effects. The main protagonists are Romeo and Juliet, a pair of teenagers, that fall in love, who seek help from various adults such as their parents, Friar Lawrence and the Nurse, who all in some way let them down. In this essay I am concentrating on the role of the Nurse and her relationship with Juliet. Lord Capulet is a father who has doted on her, and now threatens to ostracise her. Juliet is distraught, though her mother briefly defends Juliet she sides with Lord Capulet, 'Do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee'. This leaves the Nurse as her only ally. She (the Nurse) does try and defend Juliet, 'You are to blame, my Lord', however, Lord Capulet is dismissive of her, 'you mumbling fool'. We see here that the Nurse is ineffectual, she is viewed by her employers as a not very bright gossip, 'And why, my lady wisdom? Hold your tongue'. Shakespeare successfully increases the dramatic tension as we see Juliet isolated with only the Nurse to give her advice to extrapolate herself from the situation, 'Oh God, Oh Nurse how shall this be prevented?'. The Nurse's advice is for Juliet to commit bigamy, 'Your first is dead or't were as good he were'. It is essentially practical advice to marry socially successfully, to do as her parent's wish, '…this is wisely done', but fails to take into account what her charge actually wants. There is a lack of moral guidance here to as she seems to have no objection to bigamy so long as nobody knows about it and she curses herself for it. The Nurse tells ... • 29. The Forbidden Romantic Love Between Romeo And Juliet Essay The forbidden romantic love between Romeo and Juliet. By Ashleigh Moseley. Year 10 English: Mrs Shaw. For this anthology about love I have chosen, and mainly centred around the topic of love that is forbidden. With this type of love, comes many struggles and questions that I'm sure must go through the minds of people in this situation. This is what happens with Romeo and Juliet in the Play written by William Shakespeare in 1591. It will be a romance that will strongly challenge them, but as we see it will not break the bond of love they have for each other. In this task I will try to describe the pain, happiness, frustration, forgiveness, anger, and joy through a collection of shorts texts that come with the topic of persecuted, and forbidden love. Author unknown. Juliet is willing to love Romeo no matter what. I think that this short poem describes the nature of their love very well. This is how they think, act and live out their love for each other. I noticed that the words in this poem: "you are my best friend, my human diary my other half", picture how they feel about each other in a really clear way. If he had lived for Juliet's sake he would have been able to realize that life goes on and he would have grieved sure, but he would have then, returned to Verona someday to his old life and would have married someone else. This play is centered around a couple many see as fit for marriage, except the two "lovebirds" are unable to see that for themselves. Though the plays are both of different genres, each encompassess aspects of an incredibly entertaining, informative piece. In the time of Shakespeare, his plays would have been performed during the day, using natural light from the open centre of the theatre. Nearly all the elements of the play; conflict, death, poison are dark, while the love between Romeo and Juliet is the only element which could be described as light in the play. Romeo speaks of Juliet as a "bright angle shining in the night", again the vision that the love is the only light in the play and is surrounded by darkness. Also, Juliet describes Romeo as "whiter than new snow upon a raven's back". The language throughout the play also makes this comparison between light and dark. Shakespeare's characters are continually cursing and banishing each other throughout the play, even in the very first scene when Tybalt says "What drawn and talk of peace? I hate the word as I hate heel and all Montagues and thee!". (Act 1, scene 1) However, this is contrasted by the beautiful language between Romeo and Juliet. In the famous balcony scene Romeo says "It is the east and Juliet is the sun, Arise, fair sun and kill the envious moon". This further illustrates the idea that their young love is seen as the light in the play, as Romeo refers Juliet to the sun. The camera movements and shots are smoother and blend into the film rather than stand out. For instance the there is a low angle that zooms into Gatsby standing proud behind the window, not just a low angle shot that suddenly cuts to another shot like in Strictly ballroom. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The story of a young girl falling in love at first sight and be willing to die for her love is a difficult concept for a modern audience to relate to. To enforce this idea, the director had to make sure of a few things. The first being to make sure the audience could easily accept that Romeo is a naive guy, hoping for love to come his way. And secondly, Juliet being so innocent she could fall in love with Romeo so easily. These ideas are portrayed in believable characteristics when we first see Romeo and Juliet in the film. When Romeo makes his debut in the movie, he is seen depressed. He is seen smoking a cigarette whilst writing poetry and glaring aimlessly up, at a grey cloudy day. Both the cigarette and weather can be viewed a type of symbolism in the movie. The camera shots zoom on Romeo's face, showing the audience his melancholic facials which informs them about how he is feeling. The director uses these types of shots throughout the movie to show the raw emotional back story of the characters. For example, when the priest is told that Romeo wants to marry Juliet, the camera zooms into to show his face which is in awe and disbelief; informing the audience about how the character, the priest, is feeling. In this instance for Romeo, these shots capture the impress of a young lad who is lost and upset. Soon after this, Juliet is introduced as being a young girl with an innocent personality. Her parents speak of her still being a stranger to the world by saying 'She is still very young.' This phrase informs the audience that she is young, naive and can easily fall for any handsome guy that comes her way. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the play, the audience observes that the relationship between Juliet and her mother is dreadful as the relationship is very formal between Juliet and Lady Capulet. Shakespeare portrays this by Juliet calling her mother, 'Madam'. This implies that Juliet is distant with her mother as she addresses her in a formal tone and this is not what you would call a mother. This illustrates that the relationship between Juliet and Lady Capulet is so bad, that she is equal to a stranger. Baz Lurhmann does not cut out this part, but, the camera angle faces Juliet to show the respect Juliet has for her mother. The effect created by this action is the audience can see that Juliet has deference for her mother even though she addresses her as a stranger, not as a mother and Luhrmann expresses this well. The Nurse cannot be seen at this time, which makes it more personal between Juliet and her mother. Baz Luhrmann and William Shakespeare both portray the terrible relationship between Juliet and her mother in the same way.
