Jane Austen Persuasion Analysis
Austen s creative energies all of her life. In this particular novel, most is based on character Anne
Elliots love life, she had been too dependent on time alone; no aid had been given in change of place,
(Austen 109). Persuasion, like Austen s other novels, was praised for its realistic depiction of character
and society in the time written. In her introduction to the Signet publication, Margaret Drabble praises
its strong anti romantic tendencies, its unexpected generosities, and its welcoming of the possibility of
a new order. (World Literature Criticism). These scholars have helped cement the novel s reputation as
a literary classic. Adding on, its romance parts create a strong base of the mood of the story. In
Chapter seven, Anne Elliot describes, actually looking round, ready to fall in love with all the speed
which a clear head and quick taste could allow, (Austen 154). She had no change of thought in who
she wanted throughout the entire novel. In life, she is referring to how it looks to be rather than how it
actually is in the many ups and downs you go through before finding your true love.
In conclusion, these professionals that have criticised not only Persuasion, but many other novels of
Jane Austen s work, have created an image for her novels. Previously stated, many of her books are
based on love and marriage, which meant the most to her.

Socialization Reflection
Our views and behavior depend to some degree on our social location in society our gender, race,
social class, religion, and so forth. (Barkan, 2013). As I have grown up and my perspective of the
world has broadened I have realized how narrow my views were. I grew up in Germany, Italy, and
Hungary before moving to the USA, but because I was so sheltered I really didn t know what was
really happening in society. As I grew older I have come to realize the socialization process did help
me develop my values, beliefs, morals, my religious outlook, my political affiliations and what not.
A1 Socialization Paper
As a baby we aren t born with culture. The people who are responsible for our socialization are our
parents and others who we might associate with...teachers, friends, etc. As a very small child we learn
about the culture we were born in as well as our gender roles. Depending on some cultures women for
example are taught that they will be homemakers and do a large share of work. In my culture I learned
my future role which would be a daughter, friend, sister, a wife in the future possibly, and then maybe
a mother. This is also the time we learn what society expects of us; the norms per say. This is also the
time in our lives that our personality forms. While our personality has much to do with our upbringing
and genes it also is created by the culture we are in. Research in geographical sciences has shown
regional variation on a number of indicators including public

Tales In The Canterbury Tales
All three articles have several things in common but also have several thing which distincts them from
the others. Lawrence, Pratt, and Meyer Lee all share a different idea of how the tales in the canterbury
tales were written. They all have different arguments on how the ordering and the editing of the tales
were. Some of them Along with that they also argue about the manuscripts and the order that the
manuscripts can be in due not knowing dates on when it was written. Furthermore, they also introduce
the idea of having discussions of the tales because they don t just want their audience to read the tales,
but they also want hear assumptions and open more discussion. In the Sequence of the Tales by
Lawrence, he discusses his view based off what Furnival s beliefs are. Lawrence is actually one of the
only editors that agrees with Furnival s order but doesn t agree with his reasoning in choosing that
order. Lawrence uses the letter grouping such as, A, B, B1, B2, to group the tales and he believes this
is the best way to order them (Lawrence, 93). He believes this is the best way because some stories
could have been moved around to keep a sequence going on in the story. He also doesn t agree with
Furnival s method about relating the tales to Chaucer s trip to Canterbury. Although the tales were not
finished, Chaucer was able to have parts that showed fluidity (Lawrence, 99). There is a three in a half
day method in which Lawrence believed all stories fit into, but

The Impact of Technology
Technology, mainly computers and video games, have made a vast difference in our society. Many
years ago there were not very many forms of technology that existed. People often used type writers,
went, dancing, did puzzle, and played board games for entertainment. Nowadays, the use of computers
has become extremely popular. If an individual is not using a computer for some form on
entertainment, they are most likely using it for something along the lines of school or work.
Technology has gone from being a convenient tool to being a bad impact on society. Not only is it
insulting the intelligence of many young adults, but it is also taking away from one s social behavior.
Some people, however, disagree and think technology has made a ... Show more content on

For example, some will say that technology is very convenient and enhances knowledge. In his article,
Steven Lohr says, On average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those
receiving face to face instruction. Although this may be true for some individuals, there are a majority
of others who will argue that this statement is wrong. He also states, The real promise of online
education, experts say, is providing learning experiences that are more tailored to individual students
than is possible in classrooms. That enables more learning by doing, which many students find more
engaging and useful. This article is leaning more towards the idea that online education is a better
choice than classroom education. This idea could go both ways. It mostly depends on the preferred
learning style of the student. If the student learns better by reading the required learning material, then
he or she would probably agree that online courses are easier for them. However, if the student is a
more visual learner, then he or she may learn better by being in a classroom and being physically
taught. They may also agree that taking online courses make knowledge valueless. There are also
many individuals out there who will argue that video games have positive effects on children in our
society today. In an online article, James Robers shares that, The online video games that children play

It has a very unique way of being made. It takes a person 3 days and 3 nights to watch the tamahagane
burn. Another unique fact is that it takes 15 people over the course of 6 months to make the sword.
Also, the Katana is unique because of the metal it uses. It is made out of one of the rarest metals in the
world which is tamahagane. The Katana is unique because of the mastery of making it. A person who
wants to be involved in making a Katana has to go through training and has to learn the proper steps
into making the sword perfect. This takes a lot of time to master. Also it is unique because it relates to
chemistry. In the video, it shows how a Katana is made out of different elements such as steel that is
made up of carbon and iron. Steel is also an alloy. Lastly, a Katana is unique because it shows how the

Fireworks
Introduction Whether it be the 4th of July, a day at Disneyland, or Chinese New Year, fireworks can
be used to appeal to people of all ages, genders, and races. These low explosive pyrotechnic devices
are primarily used for aesthetic or entertainment purposes. Fireworks come in various forms, including
sparklers, firecrackers, basic fireworks, and ariel or display fireworks. Those who watch firework
displays find that those can be broken into smaller categories by four primary effects. These effects
include noise, light, smoke, and floating material. Because of the varying types available, it is
common for fireworks to be classified by how they perform, whether it be on the ground or more
commonly, aerial. The overall dangers associated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The scientific aspect of fireworks grew in Germany, where advancement became the key goal in
pyrotechnics. It wasn t until the nineteenth century that fireworks also became popular in America.
Firework development, such as the forest green color, is still continuing today (Gondhia).
Discussion
A basic firework, sparkler, firecracker, and aerial all have different components in which produce
different reactions. Different components may also be added to an aerial firework to produce various
colors and shapes. A basic firework is made up of six basic ingredients. These ingredients include fuel,
an oxidising agent, a reducing agent, regulators, a coloring agent, and binders. Charcoal or black
powder is the most common fuel in fireworks. Other elements like thermite can be used in place of
black powder, although fuels usually contain an organic element. The fuel initially starts to work
inside the firework when it begins to lose electrons to atoms within the oxidiser, thereby reducing and
releasing atoms from the oxidiser. When this occurs, bonds are formed between the fuel and oxygen
atoms, causing the product to be somewhat stable. However, only a minimal amount of energy is
required to start the combustion of this fuel oxidiser compound. As a result, the solid mixture liquefies
and vaporizes into the flame of the ignition causing a massive release of energy. This act marks the
beginning of combustion (Gondhia). The oxidising agent produces

Modernity in The Metamorphosis and The Judgement by Franz...
French poet Charles Baudelaire famously coined the term modernity as the transient, the fleeting, the
contingent; it is one half of art, the other being the eternal and the immovable . This particularly
characterises the transitory nature of contemporaneity, highlighting the importance art has in capturing
the experience of this urban cosmopolitan. Through The Metamorphosis and The Judgement, Franz
Kafka uses literature in order to portray the sickness of modernity in which tradition has crumbled
under the onslaught . Kafka draws upon the negative aspects of this industrial civilisation, particularly
highlighting
According to Elizabeth Boa, one of the effects of the modernizing process was that of generational
tensions as sons sought to over throw paternal authority and find their own way within the modern
world. A reoccurring motif within both texts is that of the role reversal of filial relationships in which
the son is portrayed as the provider and the father as the dependant. This experiment with traditional
family structure can be seen within The Metamorphosis as Mr. Samsa is described as almost
commensurate with his wife and daughter due to being unable to support them and wholly relies on
Gregor for the household income. He is illustrated as an old man...who could not take on very much ,
as having an arduous yet unsuccessful life and was now clumsy in his movements due to the great deal
of weight he had gained. Each of these quotes have negative

Optical Character Recognition for Kids Learning
Chapter I
Introduction
Education is the learning and development which results from this process of teaching or training. It is
the academic discipline dealing with teaching and learning methods in the schools. Learning starts at
home and the parents are their first teachers to their kids. When they are about 4 to 6 years of age,
parents are starting to bring their children at school where they are able to learn not only the basic
skills such as reading and writing but also to develop simple logic and abstract ideas like numbers,
shapes, colors, time and many more. Yet, learning first how to write is by far the most important

Children can trace uppercase and lowercase letters using the stylus and will be evaluated afterwards in
a friendly manner. The program will also contain a different order of teaching a child to write the
alphabet and works can be saved. The program has a quiz section that assesses the learning of the
child without the aided instruction of gif format.
To help children to construct correct handwriting, there would seem to be a case for the use of ruled
writing spaces and assist them to follow the proper procedure of writing a specific character and
obtain precise strokes. There would also a field references or guidelines for line and cursive character

the children can easily understand. A different level of practicing is considered to be sure that children
will be able to take hold of the writing technique through gif images that shows how characters should
be constructed properly.
An erase function will also be available as a feature for the children to make them avoid
discouragement from scribbling out and overwriting. The children should see at the screen the
characters they intend to write and see the results produced after the program recognizes it and be able
to see the evaluation of their performance afterwards. Children should be able to understand what was
happening effectively. There will be a comment or message alert for every wrong input

Therapeutic Misconception
Clinical trials are essential for medical progress. Although new treatments are discovered through
trials, participating in research is different from receiving treatment. Yet, some human subjects fail to
comprehend the purpose of phase 1 clinical trials and believe that they will benefit from participating
in the study. This failure to recognize potential harms is called therapeutic misconception (TM). To
reduce TM, focusing on communication is crucial. Understanding the perception that subjects within
these trials have, can inform whether or not researchers should change how they communicate with
subjects. This essay will illuminate three possible ways to mitigate the risks associated with TM and

This statement does not suggest that IRB s are not doing their jobs. Rather, it suggests that the
function of IRB s is to review, approve and at times have investigators rephrase/edit documents such
as the document of informed consent that will be given to subjects. IRB s should also focus on the
selection of subjects to make sure the appropriate subjects participate in the clinical trial. If the
document of informed consent or any other documents fail to meet requirements, the IRB should not
approve the study until changes are made. This includes failure to adequately describe certain
information such as the purpose of the research. While these are three possible ways to reduce TM, it
is also important to address whose responsibility it is to mitigate TM. I think that this responsibility
falls on both an institution s IRB and the principle investigator (PI) of the research study. I imply that
it is both the IRB s and PI s responsibility because the IRB approves the study while the PI is the lead
researcher who oversees the clinical

Chicken Pox Or Varicella Zoster Virus
Chicken Pox, or Varicella, is a viral infection caused by the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV). The virus
remains within the individual and in one third of cases will reactivate causing Shingles or Herpes
Zoster (HZ). VZV only infects humans and is a double stranded DNA of the herpesvirus group.
(Leung 343). VZV has been in existence for centuries, yet it wasn t until the late 19th century that it
was more closely examined. First, the observation was made that Varicella was not a mild form of
smallpox but another virus that was characteristically similar. In 1888, von Bokoy made a connection
between that of Varicella and HZ. He observed children, without prior Varicella immunity, become
exposed to HZ and, as a result, developed a primary Varicella ... Show more content on

One idea worth investigating is the process in which T cells, whose purpose is to protect the body
against viral infections, become infected. Dendritic cells communicate with T cells in regards to what
action is necessary to fight off antigens. When the dendritic cells become infected, T cells will not
initiate a response to defend the body against VZV. Perhaps the most compelling argument as to the
severity of infection in adults is the involution of the Thymus, which occurs at the onset of puberty.
This may play a major role in the adult body s ability to control the infection. Furthermore, dendritic
cells of skin, if infected, can in fact inhibit immune responses in the skin, which may cause a more
severe infection (Abendroth; Padiatr). Next, what is the cause of reactivation of VZV as HZ? Much
has been speculated that an increase of age as well as a decrease in immunity is the cause of
reactivation. This could be further elaborated on by examining the possibility of necroptosis within the
Peripheral Nervous System. This mechanism serves as a signal for T Cells to attack the latent VZV.
Since the virus can inhibit apoptosis, but not necroptosis, this signaling may initiate the virus s defense
mechanism to begin replication. In order for T Cells to attack the virus, the cells must first destroy
Satellite cells which surround the infected nerves. Damage to these cells as well as ganglionic neural
cells causes the severe pain associated with Herpes Zoster (Steain). Finally, what are some of the
negative aspects of the Varicella vaccination? Although the vaccination is effective in preventing a
person from contracting VZV, it is possible for immunization to wear off. In this case, a person who
believes he or she is immune to the virus could contract it. With only a single dose of the Varicella
vaccine, a

Why Is Harry Potter Controversial

The Debate over J.K. Rowling s Harry Potter Controversy over children s literature is nothing new.
Children are deemed innocent because they have yet to experience the world, and there is a viewpoint
that children should be protected from literature, if it potentially harms their innocence. Despite the
worldwide popularity of the Harry Potter series, its use of witchcraft, wizardry, and violence has
drawn plenty of controversy because some believe that these books are not suitable for children. In the
early 2000s, the topic of witchcraft was a major concern, and it was (and still is) viewed as a threat to

Is the explicit portrayal of death suitable for children s literature? Is it too frightening for children to
read? Deaths include key characters like Dobby the House Elf, Harry s parents, etc. Critics (ex.
parents) argue that these deaths, as well as many others, are causes for concern because they occur as a
result of violence and evil. These books should not be made appropriate for children, because it could
potentially lead to nightmares and bad thoughts.
Despite all the controversy surrounding the Harry Potter series, I have always admired/will always
admire the books because I feel it promotes important values such as courage, love, and friendship.
Critics make the argument that the Harry Potter books encourage witchcraft to children, but I do not
believe that is the case. I feel that real witchcraft is more extreme and violent, than what is portrayed
in this series. This wonderful work of literature opened my eyes to the power of imagination, and it

Oliver Twists s Fagin as a Character for Whom the Audience...
Oliver Twists s Fagin as a Character for Whom the Audience has Considerable Sympathy
Oliver Twist was the second novel of Charles Dickens. It was initially published in monthly
instalments that began in February of 1837 and ended in April of 1939. The book has been criticised
for anti Semitism since Fagin is frequently referred to as the Jew . At the time many Jews, who had
fled to England from persecution abroad, were so discriminated against by the law that they became
travelling salesmen and stallholders. In these trades it was very easy to drift into receiving and selling
stolen goods. The Jewish thief s characterizations do seem to owe much to ethnic stereotypes.

The Jew believed that Oliver should be honoured to be welcomed by his intimate contact because of
the power he had over the other boys showing that he is very dominant. This illustrates that he is very
proud of the children he has brought up to be pickpockets. However, in reality we know that bringing
up small boys to steal is something to be frowned upon. Certainly, this shows Fagin is swollen with
pride with things of no worth.
Fagin is seen as a child abuser when we examine the way he treats the boys in the den. He allows
children of a young age to smoke long clay pipes, and drink spirits with the air of middle age men .
This gives the impression that the boys are being robbed of their youth at a very young age. Without a
doubt, a humane person would not strip the youngsters of their childhood.
At first Fagin doesn t want Oliver to know what he is really like. He uses repetition of the word very
in the context of him being glad to meet Oliver. He also refers to Oliver as my dear which is an
endearing term. Surely, only a kind hearted man, who loved children, would refer to a small boy as
this. However, we see that the Jew deliberately put Oliver to sleep by drugging him with a glass of hot
gin and water . It would suggest that Fagin wanted Oliver to get a good first

Detroit An American Autopsy Analysis
In the novel, Detroit: An American Autopsy, Charlie LeDuff, a former reporter for The Detroit News
and The New York Times, provides a personal account of his experience of returning to his hometown
of Detroit after journalistic work in New York and Los Angeles. Detroit has long been a prime
example of urban decay: it is a city that presents images of mass unemployment, political corruption,
looming bankruptcy, abandoned buildings, and senseless slaughter. It has gone through major
economic, political, and demographic decline in the recent decades, with even the city s notorious and

LeDuff provides a flicker of incorrupt civilization throughout the Detroit. Firefighters, who are tasked
with working in a city that does not provide them with adequate resources to do so, risk and
sometimes lose their lives to save the city from fires. LeDuff narrates the details of how one
firefighter, previously a new friend of his, rushed into an abandoned house in an effort to save those
inside; unfortunately, the house was empty and the collapsing roof ended his life. He also recounts for
his connections with businessmen, homeless individuals, and struggling homeowners to portray the
slivers of hope and determination holding the falling city together. Regardless of the problems of race,
economics, politics, and overall desperation of the city, LeDuff presents Detroit to be facing issues
that transcend so. The government has destroyed individuals and possibly any positive light the city
may see, as well as humanity has been marooned as people have not only lost jobs but also their
relationships between others around them. With Detroit s recent declaration of bankruptcy in 2013, a

The Prevelence of Corruption in Various Facets of Today s...
Corruption refers to the use of public goods or power for the benefit of an individual or a group of
people. Referring to what the definition says, a corruption situation could occur in an organization that
is actively handling money, and the people who are responsible of managing it within the institution
take advantage of it for personal purposes. Corruption is a problem that occurs worldwide but it is
more common in some countries than in others. It is more likely to happen in poorer countries.

However, in the administration department there are some people whose interests go beyond the
interest of the organization and want to make a profit from the money they receive. There are three
possible ways of corruption within this department. First of all, the corrupt people can take the money
away directly from the budget of the organization. However, they could get caught easily in this
situation because when the others departments take a look at the funds statement, they will realize that
some money is missing.
Secondly, they could negotiate with some of the companies that offer services to the organization. For
example, if there is an event and a certain company is supposed to rent the audio system, which cost
$3000 there could be a negotiation between the corrupt people in our organization and the people from
the company which offers the service so they inflate the cost from $3000 to $6000 and then divide the
surplus of $3000 in exact parts between the two parties.
Besides, the third way of corruption could arise in the creation of companies by the members of the
administration department. In this case they will be the owners of the companies that offer services to
the organization. The problem that could happen here is that they are going to have the power to
control the bills so if certain service cost $1000 in the market, they can easily charge the same service
for more money. Since they handle

How Did The Black Plague Affect Society
The Black Plague was the worst pandemic in history, wiping out nearly a third of the population of
Europe during the 13th century, but it can also be considered a turning point of history. The Black
Plague caused a ripple effect that had a hand in the change of societal construct, religion, the arts, and
medicine.
Societal Hierarchy
During the High Middle Ages, Feudalism and the Societal Hierarchy was the social construct of the
land. In that time period only 10% of peasants were actually free men, the rest were under the social
class of serfs. Europe was becoming overpopulated due to periods of peace and prosperity, making it
incredibly convenient for cheap labor. Working for the lords of the land, Serfs were very much close
to slaves, but this all changed during the 1350s. The population began to decline due to mass
starvation caused by poor harvest, throughout parts of Europe. Increased warfare also contributed to
decline in population, such as Hundred Years War. Perhaps the most detrimental of all this is, the black
plague, which began to wreak havoc in Europe around 1348. The Black Plague, Black Death , was a
disease that civilization had no answer to. The massive deaths of the population caused the feudal
lords to face severe labor shortages, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

He found that wealth was concentrated in the hands of the few and poverty in the hands of the many.
The principle is based on the unequal distribution of things in the universe. It is the law of the
significant few versus the trivial many. The Pareto Principle is a rule of thumb, which states that: 20
percent of the problems have 80 percent of the impact. The 20 percent of the problems are the vital
few and the remaining problems are the trivial many. From the quality point of view, this diagram was
introduced by the professor J. M. Juran, as an instrument for the classification of the problems of
quality: ν Major problems, they are only a few, but their results are quite important; ν Secondary
problems, there are also a great deal of minor problems, but their results are limited. A Pareto Diagram
is a good tool to use when the process investigated produces data that are broken down into categories
and you can count the number of times each category occurs. A Pareto diagram puts data in a
hierarchical order, which allows the most significant problems to be corrected first. The Pareto
analysis technique is used primarily to identify and evaluate nonconformities, although it can
summarize all types of data. It is the perhaps the diagram most often used in management
presentations. Typical observations from Pareto diagram analyses

Being African American has been always difficult although they shaped American history through
sports, political science and by so many contributions. African Americans have been fighting for right,
freedom, and equality from the very beginning and they were dealing with a lot of social, economic
and political problem. Similarly, In the story The Lesson , Bambara reveal the bitter truth about the
economic and social inequality between white and Black Americans. She tries to show the actual
position of African Americans in 1960 and how they are compelled to live the miserable life. The way
she presents the story typically shows economic hardship of African Americans and the phycological
effect on children mental health. This story indirectly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thirty five dollars and the whole household could go visit Grand daddy Nelson in the country. Thirty
five dollars would pay for the rent and the piano bill too. What kinda work they do and how they live
and how come we ain t in on it? Where we are is who we are (Bambara 525). This scenario shows the
financial level among African American and white people. Black people are living very miserable life
and surviving with limited resources within the same country in other side white people were living
the superior and elevated life which shows the economic unfair between black and white people.
According the article African American in twentieth century by Thomas N. Maloney About half of
black men and about thirty five percent of black women who reported an occupation to the Census
said that they worked as a farmer or a farm laborer, as opposed to about one third of white men and
about eight percent of white women (Maloney 1). This census data shows that majority of black
people were involved in the farming where they were making very limited money in another side high
level and an official job was captured by the white people making having way more income than black
people. Therefore, this kind of unfair distribution of resources creates economic inequality between
these two races in 1960 s. Similarly, in this story, Miss More also tries to compare the economic level
of black and white people in so many

Favelas Essay
Introduction The street parties and music of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, called baile funk, are a topic
that has been studied by relatively few scholars. Perhaps it is due to the violent nature of the parties, as
one person familiar with the realities of favelas states [Do researchers] have any idea what a real
favela is like? 14 year old kids with AR 15s, AK 47s, and MAC 11s all around? (Robinson, 2004, p.
1). Furthermore, it is difficult to gain an honest account of the cultural significance from the point of
view of people who have not grown up in the favelas and build their impressions of the favelas
through the lens of the media. Yet, the moral panic as a result of the negative perception of bailes funk

Gangs dictate and control the operation of more than six hundred identifiable favelas as they battle for
power, resulting in more than fifty homicides per week. The police believe they are fighting in a civil
war of resiliency, killing nearly nine hundred people living in favelas per year. Despite the moral panic
of outside citizens, one in five people living in Rio de Janeiro identify themselves as favelados ,
leading them to fight for what they consider to be normal life within the favelas (Favela on Blast,
2008).
A subculture has emerged in the favelas since the early 1980s, shaped by street parties called bailes
funk, literally defined as funk balls . The bailes funk are the heart of the favelas consisting of street
parties driven by a musical genre of dance and hip hop, which was developed in the favelas and
influenced by Miami bass and African style music, called funk carioca (Favela on Blast, 2008). The
music makes frequent use of samples and looped tracks, often resulting in unoriginal content with
minimal production. The music is identifiable as loud, sexual, shockingly vulgar, and focuses on
subjects such as romance, sex, violence, humor, and social aspects of the favelas (Sneed, 2008).
Brazilian funk does not sound similar to funk genres typical of other countries from around the world.
With the emergence of funk carioca, a new subculture was born. Funk proibidão, meaning prohibited

Pobs Environmental Effects
Water pollution has been a growing concern in the United States, from the BP oil spill to the Flint
water crisis, because of the adverse effects it can have on the environment and the health effects in
humans and animals. Polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, were used widely as coolants and lubricants
in transformers, capacitors, and other electrical equipment. The manufacture of PCBs stopped in the
United States in October 1977 because of evidence that PCBs accumulate in the environment and may
cause health hazards for humans. This research paper will attempt to discuss the dumping of PCBs
into the Hudson River by General Electric, the health effects, and the NYS Department of Health and
the US EPA s involvement for the cleanup and restoration. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

One way PCBs are detrimental to human health is the developmental effects that are seen in the
offspring of women who were exposed to PCBs before or during pregnancy. These women in
particular are at higher risk of giving birth to children that have major neurological and motor control
problems, including lowered IQ and poor short term memory. A group of children in Michigan whose
mothers had been exposed to PCBs were found to have decreased birth weight and head size, lowered
performance on standardized memory, psychomotor and behavioral tests, and lowered IQ (Jacobson
and Jacobson 1996). Another group of women exposed to PCBs in upstate New York due to the nature
of their jobs had shorter pregnancies and gave birth to children with lower birth weight. Research has
also shown that women who consumed PCB contaminated fish from Lake Ontario were found to have
shortened menstrual cycles (Mendola et al 1997). PCBs are also thought to play a role in reduced
sperm counts, altered sex organs, premature puberty, and changed sex ratios of

Celebrating the Queer in Amsterdam
I think the celebration of LGBT identities in Amsterdam from the article Gay Men and Lesbians in the
Netherlands by Gert Hekma and Jan Willem Duyvendak to the movie we watched was an interesting
look at LGBT struggles (or lack of struggles) and identities found in the Netherlands in comparison to
the United States. At first glance, from both the movie and the article, Amsterdam just seems like a
wild, amazing time for people of all sexualities. Equality has been reached. Hallelujah! Let s party!
Beyond this outward appearance of equality and acceptance, Amsterdam s LGBT culture must be
unpacked and examined beyond just gay people partying a lot like in the documentary. I think the
article Gay Men and Lesbians in the Netherlands did a pretty good job of unpacking Amsterdam s
LGBT culture but a criticism I have is that the article pretty much forgot bisexuals and trans people in
its analysis of Amsterdam s gay culture. Bi and trans erasure is a thing that regularly occurs in both
straight and gay spaces so I was not surprised by this but it is telling about both the authors and
Amsterdam in general. This is a connection that will be addressed because we did read articles on both
bisexual and trans people. Amsterdam, in its goal to become the gay haven of the world, has
conveniently forgotten about everybody else in the LGBT struggle including many people of color,
and that must be tackled for positive change to occur. As the article Gay Men and Lesbians in the

Why Is Dedication Important
Being a senior in high school, I am just discovering the secret to being a successful athlete; one cannot
just show up to practice and expect a desired outcome. Dedication is the willingness and drive to go
beyond one s boundaries for one s desires. Playing for a softball team that has 19 state championships
and 27 consecutive regional titles, I have always been taught that dedication was the key. A lot of time
has been put into practices to prepare for all the great titles the team and I have won. Practice, effort,
and teamwork are the main reasons on why dedication is the real secret to success. Showing up to a
sporting event that you participate in, just to be present will not make someone a successful athlete. As
a young athlete my parents always forced me to attend practice, or at least I felt that way. Looking
back it was all because of the potential they saw in me as an athlete. Playing on the varsity level in the
eighth grade was a challenge, but it really opened my eyes to the fact that dedication is the secret.
Practicing day in and day out really drilled that into my head. If I wanted to be good, I had to work for
it. Others always say practice makes perfect, but really if you do ... Show more content on

her actions almost jeopardizing our goal of an undefeated regional title. She introduced the team to

Forecasting Methods Compare and Contrast
Forecast in a simple terms is a prediction thru a statement or claim that a particular event will occur in
the future. It looks like to me that almost the majority of the people, including children, once in their
life time were a forecasters, as sometimes in their past they?ve tried to predict any future event. This
act of making such prediction is therefore, called forecasting. Forecasts are never finished, they are
needed continuously and as the time passes, their accuracy and their impact on actual performance are
meas So it looks like that forecast in itself, is not too complicated, it becomes complicated once the
word ?good? is attached to it. Thus, the forecast has to be well thought and planned so it can be called

Delta airline is one clear example as it is the latest one to make use of the chapter 11. The remaining
of this paper will be talking about the different forecasting methods used by the airline industry to
make future prediction of passenger demand. The exactness of forecasts is very critical to the revenue
management system as lousy prediction of demand can lead to an incorrect decision making, which in
turn leads to a miserable revenue performance. So the airline industry, more than any other industry,
needs an accurate forecasting not only because of the September 11 occurrence, but also due to a very
high price of crude oil, which tends to increase the price of kerosene highly used by the industry. One
study identified as the Improved Forecast Accuracy in Airline Revenue Management (2001, Richard
Zeni) shows that airlines divide passengers into two large categories based on their sensitivity to price
and travel needs. These included business passengers and leisure passengers. This study has further
shown that business travelers have a tendency to make their arrangements close to their departure date
staying at their destination for only a short time. However, they did not show much flexibility on their
plans at all, but they were willingly to pay more money for their tickets. On the other hand, exactly the
opposite happened with leisure travelers. They usually booked their flights well ahead of their travel
date; stayed more time

The Bank s Community Empowerment Project aimed to establish transparent, democratic, and

decentralised fashion. However the programme conflicted with traditional structures.
Even though the Bank argues that its presence has reinforced the position of the government, the

the government in the decision making process, undermining the accountability of democratically

Another technique this commercial uses is what the camera focuses on. When the camera is focused
on the mother s back side from the mans point of view the creators are telling the audience what is
really on the man s mind, and why the son says don t touch my mama. The creators do the same thing
with the bowl of Doritos. The camera also zooms in on the game controller in the boy s hand. Through
putting the focus on the boy dropping the game controller, the creators lets the audience know that
things have just gotten serious and that something is about to happen. Aside from the different types of
appeals, pathos and ethos, and camera focus; the creators are sending a couple of messages with the
son s actions. The first message is to get your own Doritos and not take someone else s. This message
comes across when the boy slaps the man and tells him to put his Dorito chip back in the bowl. By the
son not being willing to share even one of his Doritos, the creators are telling the viewers not to share
their Doritos with any one. The second message is that Doritos are just as important as mothers. The
viewers can see this as the boy not only tells the man not to touch his mother but also to keep his
hands off the boys Doritos. By doing this the boy in a way puts the Doritos on the same level of is
mother making the chips just as import as the woman who gave birth to him. These techniques and

The Success And Success Of A Small Business Owner
The goal of the majority of corporations, primarily the small businesses, is the continuous
improvements in the manner in which they operate every year. This is a difficult feat many business
owners find to be very difficult and challenging. The life of a small business owner is one filled with
many challenges, both big and small. Many factors will determine the levels of confidence and
success that a small business will experience. The small business optimism index consists of results
compiled by a survey of small business owners, conducted on a monthly basis by the National
Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). The surveys components are the result of ten factors that
affect the success and progress of every business owner. These factors include: plans to increase
employment, plans to make capital outlays, plans to increase inventories, expect economy to improve,
expect real sales higher, current inventory, current job openings, expected credit conditions, now a
good time to expand, and earnings trend. (MyPivots, 2010). Those factors assist the NFIB in analyzing
and predicting a small businesses potential vitality, and their influence on the stock market. Although
these factors seem to be comprehensive, many other factors also exist that could go overlooked which
could be included and aide in presenting a much more comprehensive view for the Optimism s report.

The Fusion of Content and Form in Sonnet 29 Essay examples
The Fusion of Content and Form in Sonnet 29
One of the most popular of the fixed poetic forms in English literature is the sonnet. Attributed to the
Italian poet Petrarch in the fourteenth century, the sonnet is still used by many contemporary writers.
The appeal of the sonnet lies in its two part structure, which easily lends itself to the dynamics of
much human emotional experience and to the intellectual mode of human sensibility for argument
based on complication and resolution.
In the last decade of the sixteenth century, sonnet writing became highly fashionable following the
publication of Sir Philip Sydney s sonnet sequence Astrophel and Stella, published in 1591. Sonnet
sequences were widely read and admired at this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A different rhyme scheme and thus a different convention of logical and rhetorical organization
determines the differences between the two sonnet forms. In the Petrarchian sonnet the problem is
solved by reasoned perception or a meditative process.
The Shakespearean sonnet maintains the basic two part structure of conflict and resolution, now
presented in fourteen lines of three quatrains and a concluding rhyming couplet. Each quatrain
presents a further aspect of a problem, conflict, or idea. The resolution occurs in the last two of a
rhyming couplet, achieved through logical cleverness that summarizes or ties together what has been
expressed in the three quatrains. The rhyme scheme, subject to variation, is abab, cdcd, efef, gg in
iambic pentameter.
The sonnet sequence is a gathering together of a number of sonnets to present a narrative or examine a
larger theme. Shakespeare s sequence, like Sydney s, was intended as a series of love poems to
celebrate the poet s affections for a young male friend. The poems were collected and published as a
sequence in 1609, though initially they were private poems meant for a small circle of writers and
friends, not for publication. There are 154 sonnets in the sequence. Some scholars speculate these are
ones that remain from a longer work, thus accounting for the sonnet s problems in chronology,
thematic development, and connections between individual poems. Other scholars speculate that not

memories are required to be recorded for the sake of mankind. Memories are valuable in the fact that
they can be lost so easily and forgotten that they ever existed. There are things that you have said,

The samples were then dried properly to remove the trace of remaining solvent. The extracts were
subjected for vacuum drying in rotary evaporator. The free radical scavenging activity of seed extracts
of A. nigra were determined using DPPH whereby solution of DPPH in 99.99% ethanol was prepared
and was mixed with ethanolic solutions of n hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts from A. nigra
seeds at determined concentrations. The mixture was shaken and incubated. Butylated hydroxyl
toluene (BHT) as positive reference ethanol as negative reference were used. The absorbance was
measured using multimode microplate reader. Each sample extract were mixed with dry KBr powders
and their absorption spectra were obtained with a Perkin Elmer FTIR spectrophotometer. The 1H
spectra were recorded on a Varian 400 MHz FTNMR. Each extract sample were dissolved in CDCl3 ,
and the solvent signal was used for spectral calibration. Total soluble phenolic compound content from
three different dilutions of A. nigra seed extracts were estimated according to the Folin Ciocalteu
colorimetric assay, using gallic acid as standard and the absorbance was finally measured. To generate

The Effects Of Video Game And Gambling Addiction
Although we may not notice it, but people can be addicted to video games and it will have serious
downsides on your health. Like gambling addictions, both video game and gambling addictions both

Fireworks, flags, and parades are traditional patriotic symbols displayed in big cities and small towns

Many onlookers gathered to watch the show, but just a few minutes in, something went terribly wrong.
It was a ball of flame coming from the sky, said Jill Chetter in an interview with Newsnet 5 Cleveland.
I saw it and I watched it as it went. It was quick, but my eyes were able to follow it, that ball of fire

Contraceptive And Birth Control And Contraception
Are you using or someone you know partaking in a contraceptive method? Chances are you answered
yes since more than 99% of women...have used at least one contraceptive method (Contraceptive Use
in the United States). But you are probably using the wrong type. I can enlighten you to the most
effective and all around most appealing birth control on the market known as the ParaGard IUD.
Before we dive in we must ask ourselves, what is birth control? What is the difference between it and
contraception? Well, the only difference is what the common belief in society is, of each. Society
commonly thinks that birth control is a tiny pill that takes care of your own or someone else s
pregnancy worries. This is true, but it is only a type of birth control. Also, in false thinking, many
individuals believe contraception is a fancy word for condoms. As with the pill condoms are only a
type of contraceptive. Society only has a small spectrum of what contraceptive and birth control is. In
reality, they are definitely the same. By definition, birth control is contraception; an online dictionary
states that it is the deliberate prevention of conception or impregnation (MerriamWebster.org). There
are many forms of contraception. It is a major contributor to why our population is limited to 7.4
billion people (Current World Population). If you are ever considering a contraception method the
Intrauterine device, especially the ParaGard, will be a dependable option to keep the population

Californi Drought In The Past Century
Community leaders, California is experiencing the most severe drought in decades, perhaps the worst
in the past century. Our current drought has led to fierce wildfires, water shortages and restrictions,
and potential loss in the agriculture business. While it has only been four years since the drought
began, we have already seen a substantial loss in the body of water California water reservoirs
contain. And while hopes for strong precipitation are high, the reality is that we are too deep in our
drought to recover with a year or two of strong precipitation. The sad truth is that California uses a
vast amount of water each year, varying from public supply and industrial to thermoelectric generators
and irrigation systems, all without replenishing

  • 2. Jane Austen Persuasion Analysis Austen s creative energies all of her life. In this particular novel, most is based on character Anne Elliots love life, she had been too dependent on time alone; no aid had been given in change of place, (Austen 109). Persuasion, like Austen s other novels, was praised for its realistic depiction of character and society in the time written. In her introduction to the Signet publication, Margaret Drabble praises its strong anti romantic tendencies, its unexpected generosities, and its welcoming of the possibility of a new order. (World Literature Criticism). These scholars have helped cement the novel s reputation as a literary classic. Adding on, its romance parts create a strong base of the mood of the story. In Chapter seven, Anne Elliot describes, actually looking round, ready to fall in love with all the speed which a clear head and quick taste could allow, (Austen 154). She had no change of thought in who she wanted throughout the entire novel. In life, she is referring to how it looks to be rather than how it actually is in the many ups and downs you go through before finding your true love. In conclusion, these professionals that have criticised not only Persuasion, but many other novels of Jane Austen s work, have created an image for her novels. Previously stated, many of her books are based on love and marriage, which meant the most to her. • 3. Socialization Reflection Our views and behavior depend to some degree on our social location in society our gender, race, social class, religion, and so forth. (Barkan, 2013). As I have grown up and my perspective of the world has broadened I have realized how narrow my views were. I grew up in Germany, Italy, and Hungary before moving to the USA, but because I was so sheltered I really didn t know what was really happening in society. As I grew older I have come to realize the socialization process did help me develop my values, beliefs, morals, my religious outlook, my political affiliations and what not. A1 Socialization Paper As a baby we aren t born with culture. The people who are responsible for our socialization are our parents and others who we might associate with...teachers, friends, etc. As a very small child we learn about the culture we were born in as well as our gender roles. Depending on some cultures women for example are taught that they will be homemakers and do a large share of work. In my culture I learned my future role which would be a daughter, friend, sister, a wife in the future possibly, and then maybe a mother. This is also the time we learn what society expects of us; the norms per say. This is also the time in our lives that our personality forms. While our personality has much to do with our upbringing and genes it also is created by the culture we are in. Research in geographical sciences has shown regional variation on a number of indicators including public ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Tales In The Canterbury Tales All three articles have several things in common but also have several thing which distincts them from the others. Lawrence, Pratt, and Meyer Lee all share a different idea of how the tales in the canterbury tales were written. They all have different arguments on how the ordering and the editing of the tales were. Some of them Along with that they also argue about the manuscripts and the order that the manuscripts can be in due not knowing dates on when it was written. Furthermore, they also introduce the idea of having discussions of the tales because they don t just want their audience to read the tales, but they also want hear assumptions and open more discussion. In the Sequence of the Tales by Lawrence, he discusses his view based off what Furnival s beliefs are. Lawrence is actually one of the only editors that agrees with Furnival s order but doesn t agree with his reasoning in choosing that order. Lawrence uses the letter grouping such as, A, B, B1, B2, to group the tales and he believes this is the best way to order them (Lawrence, 93). He believes this is the best way because some stories could have been moved around to keep a sequence going on in the story. He also doesn t agree with Furnival s method about relating the tales to Chaucer s trip to Canterbury. Although the tales were not finished, Chaucer was able to have parts that showed fluidity (Lawrence, 99). There is a three in a half day method in which Lawrence believed all stories fit into, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

People often used type writers, went, dancing, did puzzle, and played board games for entertainment. Nowadays, the use of computers has become extremely popular. If an individual is not using a computer for some form on entertainment, they are most likely using it for something along the lines of school or work. Technology has gone from being a convenient tool to being a bad impact on society. Not only is it insulting the intelligence of many young adults, but it is also taking away from one s social behavior. Some people, however, disagree and think technology has made a ... In his article, Steven Lohr says, On average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face to face instruction. Although this may be true for some individuals, there are a majority of others who will argue that this statement is wrong. He also states, The real promise of online education, experts say, is providing learning experiences that are more tailored to individual students than is possible in classrooms. That enables more learning by doing, which many students find more engaging and useful. This article is leaning more towards the idea that online education is a better choice than classroom education. This idea could go both ways. It mostly depends on the preferred learning style of the student. If the student learns better by reading the required learning material, then he or she would probably agree that online courses are easier for them. However, if the student is a more visual learner, then he or she may learn better by being in a classroom and being physically taught. They may also agree that taking online courses make knowledge valueless. There are also many individuals out there who will argue that video games have positive effects on children in our society today. Those who watch firework displays find that those can be broken into smaller categories by four primary effects. These effects include noise, light, smoke, and floating material. It wasn t until the nineteenth century that fireworks also became popular in America. Firework development, such as the forest green color, is still continuing today (Gondhia). Discussion A basic firework, sparkler, firecracker, and aerial all have different components in which produce different reactions. Different components may also be added to an aerial firework to produce various colors and shapes. A basic firework is made up of six basic ingredients. These ingredients include fuel, an oxidising agent, a reducing agent, regulators, a coloring agent, and binders. Charcoal or black powder is the most common fuel in fireworks. Other elements like thermite can be used in place of black powder, although fuels usually contain an organic element. The fuel initially starts to work inside the firework when it begins to lose electrons to atoms within the oxidiser, thereby reducing and releasing atoms from the oxidiser. When this occurs, bonds are formed between the fuel and oxygen atoms, causing the product to be somewhat stable. However, only a minimal amount of energy is required to start the combustion of this fuel oxidiser compound. As a result, the solid mixture liquefies and vaporizes into the flame of the ignition causing a massive release of energy. This act marks the beginning of combustion (Gondhia). • 8. Modernity in The Metamorphosis and The Judgement by Franz... French poet Charles Baudelaire famously coined the term modernity as the transient, the fleeting, the contingent; it is one half of art, the other being the eternal and the immovable . This particularly characterises the transitory nature of contemporaneity, highlighting the importance art has in capturing the experience of this urban cosmopolitan. Through The Metamorphosis and The Judgement, Franz Kafka uses literature in order to portray the sickness of modernity in which tradition has crumbled under the onslaught . Kafka draws upon the negative aspects of this industrial civilisation, particularly highlighting According to Elizabeth Boa, one of the effects of the modernizing process was that of generational tensions as sons sought to over throw paternal authority and find their own way within the modern world. A reoccurring motif within both texts is that of the role reversal of filial relationships in which the son is portrayed as the provider and the father as the dependant. This experiment with traditional family structure can be seen within The Metamorphosis as Mr. Samsa is described as almost commensurate with his wife and daughter due to being unable to support them and wholly relies on Gregor for the household income. It is the academic discipline dealing with teaching and learning methods in the schools. Learning starts at home and the parents are their first teachers to their kids. When they are about 4 to 6 years of age, parents are starting to bring their children at school where they are able to learn not only the basic skills such as reading and writing but also to develop simple logic and abstract ideas like numbers, shapes, colors, time and many more. There would also a field references or guidelines for line and cursive character in the every letter of alphabet. An erase function will also be available as a feature for the children to make them avoid discouragement from scribbling out and overwriting. Although new treatments are discovered through trials, participating in research is different from receiving treatment. Yet, some human subjects fail to comprehend the purpose of phase 1 clinical trials and believe that they will benefit from participating in the study. This failure to recognize potential harms is called therapeutic misconception (TM). To reduce TM, focusing on communication is crucial. If the document of informed consent or any other documents fail to meet requirements, the IRB should not approve the study until changes are made. This includes failure to adequately describe certain information such as the purpose of the research. While these are three possible ways to reduce TM, it is also important to address whose responsibility it is to mitigate TM. The virus remains within the individual and in one third of cases will reactivate causing Shingles or Herpes Zoster (HZ). VZV only infects humans and is a double stranded DNA of the herpesvirus group. (Leung 343). VZV has been in existence for centuries, yet it wasn t until the late 19th century that it was more closely examined. First, the observation was made that Varicella was not a mild form of smallpox but another virus that was characteristically similar. In 1888, von Bokoy made a connection between that of Varicella and HZ. He observed children, without prior Varicella immunity, become exposed to HZ and, as a result, developed a primary Varicella ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One idea worth investigating is the process in which T cells, whose purpose is to protect the body against viral infections, become infected. Dendritic cells communicate with T cells in regards to what action is necessary to fight off antigens. When the dendritic cells become infected, T cells will not initiate a response to defend the body against VZV. Perhaps the most compelling argument as to the severity of infection in adults is the involution of the Thymus, which occurs at the onset of puberty. This may play a major role in the adult body s ability to control the infection. Furthermore, dendritic cells of skin, if infected, can in fact inhibit immune responses in the skin, which may cause a more severe infection (Abendroth; Padiatr). Next, what is the cause of reactivation of VZV as HZ? Much has been speculated that an increase of age as well as a decrease in immunity is the cause of reactivation. This could be further elaborated on by examining the possibility of necroptosis within the Peripheral Nervous System. This mechanism serves as a signal for T Cells to attack the latent VZV. Since the virus can inhibit apoptosis, but not necroptosis, this signaling may initiate the virus s defense mechanism to begin replication. In order for T Cells to attack the virus, the cells must first destroy Satellite cells which surround the infected nerves. Damage to these cells as well as ganglionic neural cells causes the severe pain associated with Herpes Zoster (Steain). Finally, what are some of the negative aspects of the Varicella vaccination? Although the vaccination is effective in preventing a person from contracting VZV, it is possible for immunization to wear off. In this case, a person who believes he or she is immune to the virus could contract it. With only a single dose of the Varicella vaccine, a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was initially published in monthly instalments that began in February of 1837 and ended in April of 1939. The book has been criticised for anti Semitism since Fagin is frequently referred to as the Jew . At the time many Jews, who had fled to England from persecution abroad, were so discriminated against by the law that they became travelling salesmen and stallholders. Certainly, this shows Fagin is swollen with pride with things of no worth. Fagin is seen as a child abuser when we examine the way he treats the boys in the den. He allows children of a young age to smoke long clay pipes, and drink spirits with the air of middle age men . This gives the impression that the boys are being robbed of their youth at a very young age. Without a doubt, a humane person would not strip the youngsters of their childhood. At first Fagin doesn t want Oliver to know what he is really like. He uses repetition of the word very in the context of him being glad to meet Oliver. He also refers to Oliver as my dear which is an endearing term. Surely, only a kind hearted man, who loved children, would refer to a small boy as this. However, they could get caught easily in this situation because when the others departments take a look at the funds statement, they will realize that some money is missing. Secondly, they could negotiate with some of the companies that offer services to the organization. For example, if there is an event and a certain company is supposed to rent the audio system, which cost $3000 there could be a negotiation between the corrupt people in our organization and the people from the company which offers the service so they inflate the cost from $3000 to $6000 and then divide the surplus of $3000 in exact parts between the two parties. Besides, the third way of corruption could arise in the creation of companies by the members of the administration department. At first glance, from both the movie and the article, Amsterdam just seems like a wild, amazing time for people of all sexualities. Equality has been reached. Hallelujah! Let s party! Beyond this outward appearance of equality and acceptance, Amsterdam s LGBT culture must be unpacked and examined beyond just gay people partying a lot like in the documentary. The creators do the same thing with the bowl of Doritos. The camera also zooms in on the game controller in the boy s hand. Through putting the focus on the boy dropping the game controller, the creators lets the audience know that things have just gotten serious and that something is about to happen. Aside from the different types of appeals, pathos and ethos, and camera focus; the creators are sending a couple of messages with the son s actions. The first message is to get your own Doritos and not take someone else s. This message comes across when the boy slaps the man and tells him to put his Dorito chip back in the bowl. By the son not being willing to share even one of his Doritos, the creators are telling the viewers not to share their Doritos with any one. The second message is that Doritos are just as important as mothers. The viewers can see this as the boy not only tells the man not to touch his mother but also to keep his hands off the boys Doritos. • 36. The Fusion of Content and Form in Sonnet 29 Essay examples The Fusion of Content and Form in Sonnet 29 One of the most popular of the fixed poetic forms in English literature is the sonnet. Attributed to the Italian poet Petrarch in the fourteenth century, the sonnet is still used by many contemporary writers. The appeal of the sonnet lies in its two part structure, which easily lends itself to the dynamics of much human emotional experience and to the intellectual mode of human sensibility for argument based on complication and resolution. In the last decade of the sixteenth century, sonnet writing became highly fashionable following the publication of Sir Philip Sydney s sonnet sequence Astrophel and Stella, published in 1591. Sonnet sequences were widely read and admired at this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A different rhyme scheme and thus a different convention of logical and rhetorical organization determines the differences between the two sonnet forms. In the Petrarchian sonnet the problem is solved by reasoned perception or a meditative process. The Shakespearean sonnet maintains the basic two part structure of conflict and resolution, now presented in fourteen lines of three quatrains and a concluding rhyming couplet. Each quatrain presents a further aspect of a problem, conflict, or idea. The resolution occurs in the last two of a rhyming couplet, achieved through logical cleverness that summarizes or ties together what has been expressed in the three quatrains. The rhyme scheme, subject to variation, is abab, cdcd, efef, gg in iambic pentameter. The sonnet sequence is a gathering together of a number of sonnets to present a narrative or examine a larger theme. Shakespeare s sequence, like Sydney s, was intended as a series of love poems to celebrate the poet s affections for a young male friend. The poems were collected and published as a sequence in 1609, though initially they were private poems meant for a small circle of writers and friends, not for publication. There are 154 sonnets in the sequence. Some scholars speculate these are ones that remain from a longer work, thus accounting for the sonnet s problems in chronology, thematic development, and connections between individual poems. Other scholars speculate that not all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
