2. Govt mandates 7-Day home quarantine for
all international arrivals in India; expands at-
risk countries list
As per the guidelines released by the
Government of India on January 7, 2022, all the
passengers flying from abroad will have to home
quarantine themselves for a week after landing
in India and get themselves tested on the eighth
day.
The passengers coming from at-risk countries
and testing negative on arrival will also have to
do the same. The Central Government has also
updated its list of 'at-risk' countries and has
increased the number of countries to 19.

4. J&K Govt notifies land in Gulmarg, Sonamarg
as ‘Strategic areas’; Indian Army to take
control
Nearly 70 hectares of land in Gulmarg and Sonamarg tourist
resorts have been declared by the Jammu & Kashmir
Government as ‘strategic areas’. The latest move has paved the
way for the Indian Army to take control of these land patches
now.
The Indian armed forces can undertake infrastructure
development even in ecologically fragile areas, which are
declared ‘strategic areas’ by the UT Government.
The decision has been criticized by the former CM of Jammu
and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti who said that the allocation of
huge tracts of land to the armed forces in tourist areas of the
valley has confirmed the intention of the Central Government
to convert J&K into a military garrison.

5. ICC's new rule for T20Is: Teams to face in-
match penalty for slow over-rate
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced new playing
conditions for T20I on January 7, 2022 that will come into effect
with the upcoming T20I match between West Indies and Ireland at
Sabina Park.
Under the new playing conditions, the fielding team will have to
suffer the in-match penalty for slow over rates.
The penalty would be introduced in both men's and women's
Twenty20 Internationals and it will come into effect this month
itself.
The new playing conditions also include an optional drinks interval
midway through the innings in bilateral T20 international cricket.

6. Vibrant Gujarat 2022: Gujarat Govt
postpones Vibrant Gujarat Summit due to
Rising COVID-19 Cases
The 10th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit, which was scheduled
to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 10,
2022 has been postponed by the Gujarat state government due to a
spike in COVID-19 cases.
The three-day was scheduled to be held between January 10-12 in
Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
The Gujarat state government had been determined to organise the
Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit on the scheduled date and had even
sought relaxation from the centre in the 7-day quarantine rule for the
international delegates travelling for the event from 'at-risk' countries.
However, the state government decided to postpone the event
considering the current Covid situation in the state and the country.

7. PM Modi inaugurates Second Campus of
Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Second Campus of
Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute in Kolkata through video conferencing
on January 7, 2022.
The inauguration event was also attended by West Bengal Chief Minister
Mamata Banerjee.
While addressing the inaugural ceremony, PM Modi revealed that India has
reached the historic milestone of administering 150 crore vaccines today.
He said, "Out of the entire eligible population, over 90% of India's population
has at least got one dose. In just 5 days, over 1.5 crore children aged between
15-17 have been given a dose."
PM Modi also said that the government has reduced the cost of knee
implants, which has especially benefited senior citizens. "This has helped in an
annual reduction of Rs 1,500 crore, helping the citizens.
The PM National Dialysis Programme has helped 12 lakh poor with free
dialysis," said PM Modi.

8. Omicron may be less severe, but should not
be categorised as mild: WHO Chief
WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom
Ghebreyesus said during a press briefing on
January 6, 2022 that while Omicron does
appear to be less severe compared to Delta,
especially in those vaccinated, it does not mean
it should be categorised as 'mild'.
The WHO Chief warned saying that
the Omicron is hospitalising people and it is
killing people, just like the previous variants. He
said, "in fact the tsunamic of cases is so huge
and quick that it is overwhelming health systems
around the world."

9. Govt approves Rs. 12,000 crores for Green
Energy Corridor phase 2; What is India’s
Green Energy Corridor?
The Union Cabinet on January 6, 2022, gave its approval to
the Green Energy Corridor phase 2 with an outlay of Rs. 12,000
crores to facilitate the grid integration and the power
evacuation of about 20 GW of renewable energy projects in 7
states.
The Union Minister Anurag Thakur, while announcing the
decision, said that the second phase of the Green Energy
Corridor will be implemented during 2021-22 to 2025-26 fiscal
years. He further added that 80% of the phase one of the
scheme has been completed and the outlay of the first phase
was Rs. 10,142 crores.

10. India’s first Open Rock Museum inaugurated
in Hyderabad
The Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh on January 6, 2022,
inaugurated India’s first unique ‘Rock’ museum in Hyderabad.
The Union Minister later also addressed the Hyderabad scientists at
the CSIR- National Geophysical Research Institute.
Dr. Jitendra Singh, while addressing the eminent scientists, stated that
the ‘Big Earth Data’ occupies the strategic high ground in the era of
knowledge economies and India has been fully exploiting this new
area that will further contribute to the advancement of Earth Science.
He further added that the Geosciences has been contributing
significantly towards self-reliance in new India.

11. Former J&K Chief Ministers, including Farooq
Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, to lose SSG
Security Cover
Four former Chief Ministers of J&K, including Ghulam Nabi Azad and
Farooq Abdullah, are likely to lose their Special Security Group (SSG)
Protection as the administration of the Union Territory has decided to
wind up the elite unit which was established in 2000.
The move has come a little over 19 months after the Central
Government issued a notification- Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation
(Adaptation of State Laws) Order, 2020- on March 31, 2020. It amended
the Special Security Group Act of J&K Govt by omitting a clause that
provided the former Chief Ministers and their families with SSG Security.
According to the officials, the decision of winding up the elite unit was
taken by the Security Review Coordination Committee. It is a group that
oversees the threat perception of the important leaders in J&K.
