MULLAH HEBATULLAH AKHUNDZADA CONFIRMED AS
SUPREME LEADER OF AFGHANISTAN, TO HEAD TALIBAN
GOVT
• After weeks of speculation, Taliban has now announced that
Mullah Hebatullah Akhundzada will be the supreme leader of
their new Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
• Mufti Inamullah Samangani, a member of Taliban’s cultural
commission, confirmed the news and said that the new
Taliban government in the country has been finalized and an
announcement will soon be made, wherein Mullah Hebatullah
Akhundzada will be the leader of the new administration.
• Taliban government in Kabul will be on the lines of the
Iranian leadership, with the top religious leader Akhundzada
as Afghanistan’s supreme authority. Samangani said that the
consultations are almost finalized and necessary discussions
have also been held about the Cabinet.

INDIAN NAVY SIGNS CONTRACT WITH BEL TO
PROCURE NAVAL ANTI-DRONE SYSTEM
• The Ministry of Defence announced that the Indian Navy on
August 31, 2021, sealed a contract with defence PSU Bharat
Electronics Limited for the supply of the first indigenously
developed Naval Anti Drone System (NADS).
• The Naval Anti-Drone system has been developed by the
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and
manufactured by BEL. It will be the first indigenously
developed anti-drone system to be inducted into the Indian
armed forces.
• The Defence Ministry in an official statement said that the
Indian Navy has signed a contract with Navratna Defence
Public Sector undertaking (PSU) BEL for the supply of the first
indigenous comprehensive NADS with both hard-kill and
soft-kill capabilities.

SC ASKS STATES, UTS TO SET TIMELINE FOR COVID-19
VACCINATION OF INMATES IN MENTAL HEALTHCARE
HOMES
• Supreme Court on September 1, 2021, asked all the States
and Union Territories (UTs) to set a timeline for vaccinating
the inmates in mental healthcare homes against COVID-19
and submit the vaccination status reports by October 15,
2021.
• The Supreme Court also asked all states and union territories
(UTs) to prepare and file a status report outlining what steps
they have taken to COVID-19 vaccination of inmates in
mental healthcare homes.
• The decision to fix a timeline for COVID-19 vaccination of
inmates in mental healthcare homes was taken after the
Supreme Court division bench headed by Justice Dhananjaya
Yashwant Chandrachud heard the petition filed by a lawyer
Gaurav Kumar Bansal wherein the lawyer requested
appropriate directors and orders to vaccinate inmates in
mental healthcare homes.

SAATH INITIATIVE: J&K LG MANOJ SINHA INAUGURATES
INITIATIVE FOR WOMEN ASSOCIATED WITH SELF HELP
GROUPS
• The Lieutenant-Governor of Jammu & Kashmir,
Manoj Sinha on September 1, 2021, launched Rural
Enterprises Acceleration Programme titled ‘Saath’ for
Self-Help Group women.
• LG Manoj Sinha while talking about the initiative and
the expansion of SHGs in Jammu & Kashmir said that
there are 48,000 SHGs in the region and 4 lakh
women are connected to these SHGs.
• He further added that it is the government’s aim to
create 11,000 more SHGs in the coming year. The
initiative will transform the lives of the women and
will make them independent and strong in social and
financial aspects.

CORBEVAX COVID VACCINE: BIOLOGICAL E VACCINE GETS
DGCI APPROVAL TO CONDUCT PHASE 2/3 TRIALS ON
CHILDREN
• Hyderabad-based Biological E Limited got
approval from the Drug Controller General of
India (DCGI) on September 2, 2021 to conduct
Phase 2 & 3 clinical trials for its COVID-19
vaccine Corbevax on children aged between 5
and 18 years of age with certain conditions.
• Biological E Limited has got the permission to
conduct the COVID vaccine Phase 2/ 3 trials on
children after a recommendation from the
Subject Expert Committee. The trials will be
conducted across ten locations.

AYUSH MINISTRY LAUNCHES Y-BREAK APP
• The Union AYUSH Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on September 1, 2021,
launched the Y-Break App for working professionals to commemorate Azadi
ka Amrit Mahotsav.
• The Ministry of AYUSH has launched the Y-Break App as a 5-minute yoga
protocol for office goers. The launch of the Y-Break App has been termed as
one of the most important activities by the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda,
Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa, and Homoeopathy).
• Union Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State Science and
Technology and Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for External
Affairs and Culture Meenakshi Lekhi, and Minister of State for Ayush and
Woman and Child Development Munjpara Mahendrabhai Kalubhau attended
the launch of Y-Break App.
• On August 29, 2021, the Union AYUSH Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had
announced a series of week-long activities and campaigns by the Ministry of
AYUSH starting from August 30 to September 5, 2021, to commemorate Azadi
ka Amrit Mahotsav.
• The AYUSH week had begun with a national webinar on ‘Surviving the storm
through Ayush Shelter’ for AYUSH students.

RBI TO SET UP FIVE-MEMBER PANEL ON NEW UMBRELLA ENTITY
LICENSES
• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has set up a
five-member committee to review applications
and give recommendations on new umbrella
entity (NUE) licences.
• The five-member committee will be chaired by
RBI chief general manager P Vasudevan. The
New Umbrella Entities will set up their own
payment infrastructure to compete with the
National Payments Corp. of India (NPCI).
• Significance
• The centre aims to build a settlement system
similar to the unified payments interface (UPI)
with the new umbrella entity (NUE) licences. The
system will mainly focus on small and medium
enterprises, merchants and consumers.

CHANDAN MITRA, FORMER RAJYA SABHA MP
AND SENIOR JOURNALIST, PASSES AWAY AT 65
• Chandan Mitra was the former BJP leader who was
nominated as a member of Rajya Sabha from August
2003 to 2009.
• He had resigned from Bharatiya Janata Party on July
18, 2018, and had joined the All India Trinamool
Congress.
• Former Rajya Sabha MP and senior journalist,
Chandan Mitra passed away on September 1, 2021,
in Delhi. He was 65 and was unwell for quite some
time.
• The news of Chandan Mitra’s demise was confirmed
by his son Kushan Mitra. Mitra was the former editor
and managing director of Pioneer Newspaper in New
Delhi.

September 1, 2021, released a special Rs
125 commemorative coin minted by the
Alipore Mint in Kolkata to mark the
125th birth anniversary of ISKCON founder
Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
through video conferencing. Prabhupada
was commonly known as the ‘Hare Krishna

more than 60 countries took part in this
historic event.

ACTOR SIDHARTH SHUKLA PASSES AWAY DUE TO HEART ATTACK
• Popular Television actor and Big Boss 13 winner, Sidharth Shukla passed away due
to heart attack on September 2, 2021. Mumbai's Cooper Hospital confirmed his
death.
• He was just 40 years old.
• According to senior Cooper Hospital official, he was brought dead to the hospital.
He reportedly suffered a massive heart attack in the morning. He is survived by
his mother and two sisters.
• Sidharth Shukla is best known for his role in one of the longest-running TV
shows, Balika Vadhu and another TV show Dil se Dil Tak. He had made his
Bollywood debut with Karan Johar's Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, starring alongside
Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan.
• He had participated in many reality shows including Khatron Ke Khiladi 7, Jhalak
Dikhhla Jaa 6 and Bigg Boss 13, which he had won. He had also made a guest
appearance in the ongoing Big Boss OTT season along with his former Big Boss
teammate Shehnaz Gill. The pair had also later made a heartwarming appearance
in the ongoing Dance Deewane 3 season.

GOVERNMENT HAS DECIDED TO CONCEDE
DEMAND OF STATEHOOD FOR PUDUCHERRY: CM
N RANGASAMY
• The Chief Minister of Puducherry, N Rangasamy
informed on September 1, 2021, that the Central
Government has decided to agree with the demand
for statehood for Puducherry.
• The Chief Minister of the Union Territory, while
replying to the views of the members of both ruling
and opposition blocks during a debate on the budget
for fiscal 2021-22 in the legislative assembly, said
that the statehood is absolutely necessary for
Puducherry.
• CM Rangasamy further noted that Puducherry has
experienced several hardships without the statehood
status, however, the Central Government has now
decided to concede the plea for full-fledged
statehood for Puducherry.

• 2. Muhammad Amjad Saqib -Microfinance pioneer from Pakistan
• Dr. Amjad Saqib is a prominent microfinance pioneer from Pakistan who has
been chosen for the Ramon Magsaysay Award 2021 for outstanding efforts
in restoring human dignity, alleviating poverty and helping over 3 million
families to come out of poverty through zero-interest lending model.
• 3. Roberto Ballon - Filipino fisher and community environmentalist
• Roberto Ballon is a Filipino fisher who has taken lead in the conservation of
natural resources in Sibuguey Bay. He also helps communities improve their
income through livelihood programs. The Filipino awardee dedicated his
award to his fellow fisherfolk.

for people in exceptionally difficult circumstances in Asia.
• Muncy is the founder of Community and Family Services International
(CFSI) who has been living outside his own country for more than four
decades, working in a difficult environment in Asia.
• 5. Watchdoc- Indonesian torch bearer for investigative journalism
• Watchdoc has been recognized for its highly principled crusade for an
independent media organization and its energetic use of investigative
journalism, documentary filmmaking and digital technology to
transform Indonesia’s media landscape.

FORMER HURRIYAT LEADER SYED ALI SHAH
GEELANI PASSES AWAY AT 92 AT HIS RESIDENCE
IN SRINAGAR
• Former Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani
passed away on September 1, 2021, at the age
of 92. The news of the Separatist leader’s
demise was confirmed by the People’s
Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Mehbooba Mufti.
• Geelani had been suffering from various
ailments for the past two decades. As per the
family sources, the former Jammu & Kashmir
legislature died at around 10.30 pm.
• After the news of Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s death
came out, an alert was sounded in the valley,
and restrictions were also imposed including
the suspension of internet services in the
valley. IGP Kashmir, Vijay Kumar asked to

ISRO SUCCESSFULLY CONDUCTS FIRST HOT TEST
OF GAGANYAAN SERVICE MODULE PROPULSION
SYSTEM
• The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on August 28,
2021, successfully conducted the first hot test of the System
Demonstration Model (SDM) of the Gaganyaan Service Module
Propulsion System at the test facility of the ISRO Propulsion
Complex (IPRC) in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu.
• The test conducted for 450 seconds met the test objectives and
matched the pre-test predictions. ISRO further plans a series of hot
tests to simulate various mission conditions as well as off-nominal
conditions. ISRO tweeted to share the achievement of a successful
hot test of the System Demonstration Model (SDM) of the
Gaganyaan Service Module Propulsion System.
• The Gaganyaan Service Module Propulsion System is a part of the
Gaganyaan Orbital module of the Gaganyaan Mission, India’s first
human spaceflight mission. ISRO on July 14, 2021, successfully
conducted the third long-duration hot test of the liquid propellant
Vikas Engine for the GSLV MkIII launch vehicle for the Gaganyaan
Mission.

WORLD'S NUMBER ONE TEST BATSMAN AFTER

• ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings: England captain Joe Root has
reclaimed top rank in the latest ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings after
nearly six years. With 916 rating, he has surpassed New Zealand
captain Kane Williamson, who is now ranked second with 901
rating.
• Steve Smith is ranked third, followed by another Australian cricketer
Marnus Labuschagne who is ranked fourth. India's Rohit Sharma has
surpassed skipper Virat Kohli to be ranked fifth, becoming the
highest-ranked Indian on the list.
• Joe Root has gained back his spot as the number one Test batsman
amid England's ongoing ICC World Test Championship series
against India. He had started the series at the fifth rank but he
overtook Virat Kohli, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith and New
Zealand's Kane Williamson with a tally of 507 runs in three tests.
• The last time Joe Root was ranked number one in Test Rankings was
in December 2015 before being overtaken by Kane Williamson.
Since then, the top spot has largely been rotating between
Williamson, Virat Kohli and Steve Smith.

LEADED PETROL ERADICATED GLOBALLY, WILL
PREVENT 1.2 MILLION PREMATURE DEATHS: SAYS
UNEP
• The United National Environment Programme (UNEP)
said on August 30, 2021, that the use of leaded petrol
has been eradicated from the globe. It is a milestone
that will prevent more than 1.2 million premature
deaths and will save the world economies over $2.4
trillion annually.
• UNEP, while calling the news a landmark win in the
fight for cleaner air, said that nearly a century after
doctors had first issued warnings about the toxic
effects of leaded petrol, Algeria- the last country to
use the fuel-has exhausted its supplies last month.
• The executive director of UNEP, Inger Anderson said
that the successful enforcement of the ban on leaded
petrol is a huge milestone for our environment and
global health.
