The Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra along with
Election Commissioners Rajiv Kumar and Anup Chandra Pandey
announced the Legislative Assembly Election 2022 schedule for
five states-Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar
Pradesh- on January 8, 2022.
The CEC informed that as COVID cases soared in view of
Omicron variant, the Election Commission of India had held
meetings with Union Health Secretary an d Home Secretary,
experts, & health secretaries of States.
The ECI decided to announce polls with safety norms in place
after taking these views and the ground situation.
Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra assured that the
assembly elections will be covid safe elections and all
preparations will be in place to ensure they take place in a
smooth and safe manner.

3. Philippines bans child marriage
he President of Philippines Rodrigo Duterte signed a law
prohibiting Child Marriage and it came into force on January
6, 2022, making child marriage illegal in the country.
The law that bans child marriage in Philippines states that the
State views child marriage as a practice constituting child
abuse because it debases, degrades, and demeans the
intrinsic worth and dignity of children.
As per the Britain-based rights organization Plan International,
the Philippines has the world’s 12th highest rate of child
marriage.
The latest law banning child marriage in the Philippines
complies with the international accords on women’s and
children’s rights.

4. National Water Awards 2020: UP grabs top
place in ‘Best State Category’
The 3rd National Water Awards-2020 was announced by the Union
Minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on January 7, 2022.
In National Water Awards 2020, Uttar Pradesh has secured a first
position in the ‘Best State Category’, followed by Rajasthan and Tamil
Nadu.
Under the ‘Best District-North Zone’ category, Muzaffarnagar in Uttar
Pradesh has been awarded the first prize.
The Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, while speaking on the
announcement of National Awards 2020, said that country’s current
water requirement is estimated to be around 1,100 billion cubic meters
per year and is projected to go up to 1,447 billion cubic meters by
2050. He added that while India has more than 18% of the world’s
population, the country has only 4% of the world’s renewable water
resources.

5. Omicron Cases in India Today
The Omicron cases have breached 3000-mark and risen up to 3071 as of
January 8, 2022. The Omicron cases have now been reported in 27 states
and union territories.
The highest number of Omicron cases have been detected in Maharashtra
that has reported 876 cases, followed by Delhi that has reported 513 cases
and then Karnataka, which has reported 333 cases.
India reported 1,41,986 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total
number of active cases in the country to 4,72,169.
The daily positivity rate has jumped to 9.28 percent and the weekly
positivity rate has also increased to 5.66 percent.
India also reported 40,895 recoveries in the last 24 hours, taking the total
number of recoveries to 3,44,12,740. India also reported 285 deaths in the
last 24 hours, taking the total death toll to 4,83,463.
