1. Music magazine survey results
I created a survey to get results on different aspects of magazines that will help and advise
me on how I am going to make my own. The results that I have gathered from this
experiment are part of my primary research and will positively influence my later
coursework. This has allowed me to gain an understanding of what types of music and styles
are enjoyed by different age groups.
1. The results have told me that 60% of people who took my music magazine survey
were between the ages of 15 and 24. This may persuade me to target my own
magazine at a younger audience such as teenagers.

2. The results of this question has told me that the majority of magazine readers tend
to be females as 80% of the answers came from this gender. This information may be
of an importance as I will aimmy magazine at the female gender.

3. The results of this question has showed me that pop is the most popular musical
genre with my audience as 23% of people chose this. Other popular genres of music
include indie (12%), rock (12%), RnB (12%) and hip hop (12%). These results will help
me to decide what type of music magazine I am going to create and the types of
2. genres I am going to incorporate. On the other hand, 0% of people chose electronic
as their favourite genre which means I will not be including this in my magazine
because it is unpopular.

4. In my survey I asked my audience how they generally listen to music. The 32% of
people answered with ‘other’ to the suggestions that I had included, after doing
some more research on the types of genres people enjoy the most, I have found that
some people enjoy listening to rap music and dance, along with country and
classical. Many people also listen to music using iTunes (22%) which will help me
when recommending music that may be most popular on that website.

3. 5. Next, I asked what audiences would most like to see in a music magazine. The results
have told me that people generally mostly look forward to reading interviews in
magazines. 40% of people chose the interview option which helps me to understand
what is important to readers; this will influence me to include interviews in my own
magazine as I know people are more likely to buy it. Only 5% of people said that they
enjoy seeing competitions in magazines so this may be an element that I will choose
not to include.
What would you like to see in a music magazine?
6. For this question I asked my audience what they look for in terms of style in a
magazine. The results have told me that more or less 50% of people enjoy
photography along with new music suggestions whereas 0% said suitable fonts and
colour. This will influence me to include suitable and eye catching photography along
with new music suggestions rather than spending a lot of time worrying about the
font and colours. Although this is something that is still essential to the style
magazine, it is not an overly important concern with my target audience.
What are your interests in terms of style in a music magazine?
4. 7. This question is concerning what social networks people find new music suggestions
and promotions on. The results tell me that the most popular social network site for
this is YouTube just under 30% of people chose this option. This will encourage me to
research music that YouTube promotes and which become the most popular using
this site. I am also able to promote my magazine using these results as I know where
people find recommendations.

8. In my survey I asked how often people listen to music per day to get a sense of how
important is to a person’s daily life. Around 38% of my survey takers said they spend
over four hours per day listening to music, this tells me that music plays a very
important role in people’s day as they listen to it for such a vast amount of time.
Only 19% of people said that they listen to music for under one hour per day which
tells me that it is very popular with most people.
5. How often, per day, do you listen to music?
9. I asked my audience how many concerts they attend on average every year. I did this
so I could get an idea of exactly how into their music they are and how much of their
lives are taken up by this. It will also be important when deciding what to include in
my magazine. 57% of people said that they attend from 1 to 5 concerts per year, this
clearly shows that people enjoy live gigs and would probably enjoy reading about
new ones that are taking place, this will mean that I can promote new music and
tour dates for artists involved in my chosen genre. 20% of people who took my
survey said that they don’t attend any concerts per year; this could mean that they
are not as into their music may not be as dedicated as some people. This will mean
that I will only include a small amount of information involving gigs and tours as they
are not extremely popular with my chosen audience.

6. How much would you spend on a music magazine?
10. For my last question I asked how much people would potentially spend on a music
magazine. The most popular result was from £2 to £4 which was 52% of people. This
will help me to decide what my magazine is going to cost as I now know how much
people are willing to pay for my magazine. Only 13% of people said that they would
spend over £4 on a magazine so I will consider not making mine that expensive as it
could result in people losing interest due to the price.
My research has given me inspiration for my music magazine concerning the target
audience. I am going to aim my magazine at teenagers aged between 15 and 24. This is
because the majority of people who took my survey were between these ages so I can be
sure that my target audience will enjoy my magazine. I will also mainly aim my magazine at
females as the majority of people who took it were part of this gender. This means that they
will be interested in the things that I include in my magazine as I will base the content on
the results they have given me in my survey. The content of my magazine is very important
as I have to include things that people are going to enjoy and want to read/look at, the
survey has helped me to understand that teenagers are most interested in interviews and
free gifts so this will be something that I will add into my magazine as I know that it is a
popular option. It is also clear that the people who filled out my survey enjoy looking at
photography and finding new music suggestions. This will help me when deciding what
content to include in my magazine as I know what people enjoy to see. YouTube and
Facebook are obviously both very popular amongst my target audience as they find most of
the music that they listen to on those sites. This information can help me because I can use
these social media sites to find out the types of music teenagers listen to and the most
recommended genres and musical artists. I also asked how many concerts my target
audience attend per year; this can give me a rough idea of exactly how interested they are
in music. Attending concerts is an important part of musical life and people that attend
more concerts are likely to be much more into their music and are more likely to buy my
magazine. Lastly, I asked how much people are willing to spend on their magazine which will
help me to decide what price to sell it for. Overall the results that I have gathered will help
7. me a lot with the making of my magazine and will hopefully be a success if I base it off these
results.
