- The survey results showed that 82.86% of respondents enjoyed R&B music, indicating that an R&B music magazine would have strong audience appeal.
- When asked about preferred R&B subgenres, "Hip-hop R&B" was the most popular, followed by "Old school R&B" and "Soul R&B". This provides insight into which current and classic artists to feature.
- Nearly half of respondents said they would purchase a hard copy of the magazine, while over half said they would access it online or via an app. The magazine will be published both physically and digitally to engage this audience.
2. QUESTION 1:
DO YOU ENJOY R&B MUSIC?
I got different people, females and males, both
genders from different age ranges. They got to
answer the questions from my survey that would
help me to define my target audience. I was
thinking of doing an R&B music magazine with a
variety of different R&B music genres included.
My music magazine would be hopefully aimed at
females and males equally, I will just have to
make sure I include a variety of different artists
that are both female and males so my audience
can relate to the magazine and link my music
magazine to their type R&B music that they listen
to. From my question one results, 82.86% said
that they did like R&B music. This gives a good
advantage of doing this genre for my music
magazine as it’s a music genre that you don’t see
often on music magazines.
3. QUESTION 2:
IF YES, WHICH R&B SUB GENRE DO
YOU LIKE/ENJOY LISTENING TO?
From question 1, I found out that all of the 35
people that answered to my survey enjoyed R&B
music, so my target audience will be a strong target
audience for primary and secondary audience,
both equally. Eventually more readers for primary
compared to secondary. I found out that ‘Hip-hop
R&B’ is one of the most popular R&B sub genres,
as ‘Old school R&B’ comes in second place and
‘Soul R&B’ in third. This shows that my potential
target audience seem to listen and enjoy current
R&B artists, especially the ones that are perhaps
underrated, for example; Kehlani (as she is an R&B
artist that is new to the R&B industry). This would
also include the most known, such as; Beyoncé,
Rihanna, The Weeknd, etc. This gives me and idea
how much of R&B I can actually include in my
music magazine.
4. QUESTION 3:
HOW MUCH DO YOU SPEND ON A
R&B MAGAZINE EACH YEAR?
Yearly, from my results, my potential target
audience, 31.43% seem to spend £20.50-£30 only
on music magazines, which is good amount of
magazine hardcopies being sold besides of them
being just read online. The second on the chart
that the amount of money people spend on
magazines is £0-£10 from the percentage 28.57%.
Only 5 people out of 35 from the whole survey
only seem to spend £50.50+ yearly on music
magazines, which for spending that amount of
money yearly, dedicating only on music magazines
is not that bad, especially with the impact and the
easy use of the internet to read any magazine in
today’s generation. The percentage is 14.29% out
of 100% which is not brilliant but also no surprise
because of the access of the internet. This will give
me an idea of what price I should give to my
magazine, to get a high percentage from my target
audience.
5. QUESTION 4:
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR MUSIC
NEWS?
Because I am only thinking of releasing my music
magazine monthly, in a year it would be 12 issue
magazines published, one for each month. So in
this question I would want to find out in what way
the magazine could use the internet for the target
audience to still be informed on that period of time
that the magazine doesn’t release any magazine
while they’re preparing the next months one.
Social media seems to be having a great impact
with 51.71%, which allows the magazine of using
social media to inform about any music news for
the target audience, as for them to keep up with
the magazine. The second greatest one is just the
internet in general, 25.71%. Which gives me an
idea that this would involve the use of a website,
where it includes everything especially music
news. I would be creating a music magazine
website for my magazine.
6. QUESTION 5:
DO YOU BUY A HARD COPY
MAGAZINE?
With these answers it will give me an idea that
most of my readers would buy a hard cope of my
music magazine, as it would perhaps link with their
identity. 45.71% of the people said ‘yes’, which
gives me the persuasion to publish my music
magazine as a hard copy. As well as publishing it
online as it was the second highest the answer was
with a ‘no’. I will eventually be publishing my
magazine on the website ‘ISSUU’, which is a
website where you can publish magazines and see
how many readers you get, as well as followers on
your issuu page. That will be exactly what I will be
doing. I will be publishing my magazine online too
so I can have a second way of keeping my readers
reading, as most of them seem to use the internet
on the daily basics, especially to get information
about their favourite artists.
7. QUESTION 6:
IF NO, OUT OF THESE WAYS DO
YOU READ A MAGAZINE?
Three people skipped this question but it would
still give me a clear idea, which is through the
internet way. 56.25% of the people said that they
would read the magazine through the internet, so I
will be using the ‘issuu’ platform and make my own
account for the music magazine. The other way I
will be publishing my magazine will be through app
as 34.38% of the people say that would be the way
they would be potentially reading my music
magazine. I will be making my own app for the
music magazine and have the magazine also being
published their which also will rise the percentage
of my readers through the use of different media. I
think by publishing my magazine through the
internet will help them to keep interested with the
magazine and the genre as a whole.
8. QUESTION 7:
WHICH ONE OF THESE DO YOU
CONSIDER YOURSELF?
This question helps me to define who my readers
really are, I can’t identify my whole primary and
secondary audience on just 35 survey responses
because the number would have been potentially
higher especially the fact that the reader itself
could change if I had more responses. However
from these responses, my first readers ( potential
primary target audience) seem to be ‘aspires’ with
the percentage over all of 40% out of 100%. And
my second readers (potential secondary audience)
seem to be ‘explorers’ with the result of 31.43%
and also ‘mainstreamers’ with the result 25.71%. I
believe my secondary audience would have a
variety of explorers and mainstreamers, which
shows how wide my target audience overall is and
how I can identify my target audience for my music
magazine.
9. QUESTION 8:
WHAT TYPE OF ARTIST WOULD YOU
LIKE TO SEE IN AN R&B MAGAZINE?
For my first music magazine issue I wanted to give
the change for the audience over all to pick what
type of artist they would want to see in my front
cover. This would help me to identify how many
readers I would get depending who I would include
on my front cover and talk about 60.61% of the
people said that they would want to see a solo
female artist on the front cover. This would grow
my audience if the solo female artist that I use in
the front cover is being portrayed in an unique and
interesting way. This can help me identify that my
primary target audience is probably female.
18.18% of the people that the second type of R&B
artist they would want to see in my magazine is a
solo male artist, which this helps me to identify
that my secondary target audience is potentially
males and that they can still be a big part of the
readers as a whole with the female readers.
10. QUESTION 9:
WHAT DO YOU USE MUSIC
MAGAZINE FOR?
This question is essentially asking what I need to
know for my uses and gratification theory about
my primary and secondary readers. 91.18% of the
people, which are most likely to be my primary
target audience would use a music magazine for
entertainment and also information, as 73.53%
responded as a way to use the information to learn
more about the artist and the music industry. The
other percentages define my secondary target
audience. 55.88% of the people equally said that
they would use a music magazine for identity and
social interaction with the people around them
and to know new people that have the same
interest in music and magazines as well. This would
help the people to communicate and it would help
the magazine to also grow a wider audience.
11. QUESTION 10:
IF YOU CURRENTLY BUY A MAGAZINE
REGULARLY, WHICH ONE DO YOU BUY?
From the 35 people, that I asked to take in my
survey, I found out that 25.71% are not currently
buying music magazines. I believe this is happening
because probably the audience are expecting new
music magazines to be released. My music
magazine won’t be a big impact by having a low
rate of audience. Eventually it will have a good
audience because of the use of the idea of being a
brand new magazine that has joined to the
publications just like all the other magazines. My
magazine is an R&B music magazine which it will
probably have competition between Vibe
magazine as it is also an R&B music magazine and
my potential target audience would be similar to
the Vibe current target audience.
