almosta lack of professionalism,yetthisdoesn’tmeanthatitdoesnot lookgood.Ibelieve the fact
that it’sinhisown handwritingshowsthathe wantsto make his albumpersonal tohim.The whole
of the CD coverwas drawnby Mac DeMarco thisshowsa real personal connectionthe artisthas
withthisalbumas manylittle thingsabouthimself have beenplacedwithinthe cover,suchashim
being5’10 andhis name andmany more.There are onlytwo coloursthatare usedon the albumone
beingyellow,the primarycolour,and the otherbeingblack,forthe drawingsandwords,thisgives
off quite a simplisticandbasiclookbutwhenyoulookcloseritis revealedthatall the songsonthe
albumhave beenintertwinedwithinthe drawings.
The posterhas “Mac Demarco,This OldDog” writteninthe topleftcorner.Thiswas put there
because itisthe primaryoptical areaand the designerof the posterwantsthistobe seenfirstsothe
personlookingatitknowsthat thisisa posterforMac DeMarco’s new album.There isan upper
bodyof a man wearingadenimshirtwitha beige dogmaskon,thisinstantlygrabsour attentionas
it isquite anunusual image.Aftergettingourattentionwe are immediatelymade aware thatthis
artistis not like otherartistswhonormallyhave theirface onthe poster,howeverthe choice of the
dog maskis notcompletelyrandomasthe name of the albumis “thisolddog” and he iswearinga
dog mask.
Afterdoingmore researchonwhyhe chose to wearthe dog maskI discoveredthatitappearsinthe
musicvideoforthe songthisold dogand one another.Mac DeMarco fallsintothe genre of
indie/alternative rock;yetIdon’tthinkthiscomesacross inthe postersimage. He iswearinga
denimshirtnormallywornbyindie/edgypeople butnotpeople inthe rockgenre,thismaycause
people to be confusedasto whichgenre he has.
It ismade obviousthathe isa soloact bythe fact thatMac DeMarco ishisname,yethisname does
not appearon the frontof the CD Coverwhichisodd as if yousee it ina shop there isnoindication
as to whoit isby until youpickit upand reallylookatit.

bandwant to grab your attentionwiththe bigwriting.Howeveronce youare lookingatthe writing
it showsthatit’sis slightlyerodedandthiscouldsuggestthatthe bandare tryingto show a dirtyor
not cleantheme,thiscanbe supportedbythe fact that there isa parental advisorylabel.
Continuingonthe parental advisorylabel,itisplacedinthe bottomrightcorner,itis mostlikely
placedthere because the banddonot wantyou to be drawnto it. Usingthe z patternadvertising
theorythe bottomrightcorner isthe lastplace someone shouldlookwhenlookingatanimage so
by placingitinthe bottomrightcornerthe bandare hopingyoupayattentiontothe restof the cd
coverfirstthere for makinga decisionaboutbuyingitbeforeseeingthe parental advisorylabel.

fontand as spray paintingisseenasa rebelliousactthiscouldfurthersupportthattheyare
rebelling.Greenhasconnotationsof lifeandgrowthbutalsogreedandjealousy,boththe positive

The style that the bandmembersdisplayisverydarkandit contrasts withthe lightgreen
background;thismakesthe bandcome acrossas quite gloomyanddepressing,howeverif youlook
at the face of Tre Cool (the man onthe right),he hasa jollyandalmostgoofyexpression,showing
that the band aren’tall sad andbad. The love heartgrenade appearsonboththe cd coverand the
poster;on the cd cover,the grenade isthe same colour as the name of the album, Americanidiot.
On the cd cover,the grenade piniswhite,the same colouras “greenday”.Thiscouldshow that
greendayare holdingAmericatogetherfromcertaindestruction.
