1. Analysing survey reviews
Withinthissectionof mycoursework,Ihave useda surveyaskingaseriesof questions toenable me
to furtherdevelopmymagazine. The responses tothe questionsthatIhave askedwill allowme to
become more concise whendevelopingmymusicmagazine andtailoringittocertaincriteriathat
my targetmarketwill wantto see withinthe magazine.Mytargetmarketwill alsobecome more
predominantwiththe answersgivendue to the typesof questionsasked; forexampleinthe first
questionIhave asked‘Whatisyour gender?’. The responsesgivenwill adaptmymagazines
contentsandpossible style.
What is your gender?
At a firstglance,you areableto
see that more females have
taken the survey than men; this
will implicatethe magazine
design and possiblecolour
scheme. This also challenges the
usual conventions of a music
magazine as the bigger branded
magazines often have a target
market of males,whether they
are younger or older. This will
create a sense of originality
within my music magazinebut
will also enablemy magazine to
contain different content which
may be more appealingto both
females and males.
How do you preferto read
your magazine?
Overall,you can see that
through the responses people
prefer to read a printed copy
rather than a digital copy.This
means that I will nothave to
includeany videos or interactive
features if I were to create the
magazine as a digital issueor
online;whereas, bigger branded
magazines such as NME often
do. However, if this was a
legitimate music magazine,this
may mean that the printingof
each issuemay costconsiderable
amounts makingeach edition of
the magazine more important to
sell high quantities to customers.
It may also mean that issue
would costmore for the
consumer to buy.
2. How old are you?
The age range is predominantly
under 18’s which suggests that
the magazine will possibly
includemore images or step-by-
step articles rather than in depth
reviews and interviews. The
anomalous resultof one person
in the age range of 31-40
suggests that the magazine will
also need to cater for middle-
aged consumers by possibly
includingarticles thatcan be
appealingto both younger
generations and middle-aged
customers.
What genre of music are you
most likelyto listento?
There is quite a largevariety of
different music preferences
however, within m music
magazine I will specifically
includeindieand alternative
bands and artists as fewer than
80% of the responses preferred
this genre. The next two genres
to be mot listened to are ‘Pop’
and ‘R’n’B’, meaning that I may
also includeartists such as
Rhianna who fall into both
categorised.Artists likeRhianna
would have smaller articles than
indieor alternativeartists such
as the band Pale.
3. What wouldbe your main
choice of magazine ifyou
were to pick one to read
frequently?
Other responses=PROG
As you can see, the overall
choiceof magazine is stated as
‘Other’ which in the responses is
stated as ‘PROG’. This magazine
is an indieand alternativemusic
magazine which tends to either
be vibrantwith lots of
mismatched colours or
monochrome. The theme of
PROG is creativity which will help
to shapemy magazinealong
with being for females under 18.
This may mean that I have a
vibrantcolour scheme with step-
by-step articles rather than
pale/neutral colours.
How often do you buy music
magazines?
Thiswill shape mymagazine
as to how much contentI
include andhow many
colourswill be incorporated.
From the responses,Igot5
answersthatwere ‘Never’,
thismay be because they
choose to justlistento music
rather thanread aboutthe
artistsand bandsor that they
getgiven/lentmusic
magazinesfromotherpeople
that theyknow.Ialso got4
responsesas‘Everymonth’;
thismeansthat the magazine
wouldbe able toinclude
more contentwithinthe
magazine asit wouldhave
time to collectandanalyse
content- articlesand
interviewsetc.Often
magazinesthatgetpublished
everymonth, include larger
artistsas theyhave a longer
periodof time toget an
interview withthemora
largerbudget.
4. Do you tend to lendor give
your copy of your music
magazine to others?
Overall the majority of the
respondents do not lend or give
their copy to another person
which may suggest that my
music magazines readership may
be lower than other magazines
such as ‘KERRANG!’. However, in
a previous question many of the
respondents did not buy their
own magazines meaning that
they get leantor given a copy
rather than lendinga copy
themselves.
What contentdo you prefer
withinthe magazine?
Over60% of the responses
wouldratherhave images
and photographywithineach
issue of the magazine.This
meansthat mymusic
magazine ismostlikelytobe
more visual thantextual.This
isalso betterformy target
marketas theyare under18’s
meaningthattheywould
rather lookat the artistsas
theymay nothave that much
time to readin-deptharticles
aboutthem.
5. Do you discuss music
magazineswith other?
For thisquestion,the two
mostpopularresponseswere
that theyeither‘Never’or
‘Rarely’discussedmusicwith
others.Thiscouldsuggest
that the readersformy
magazine maybe quite
private people ordon’tknow
manypeople whoare
interestedinthe same genre
of music.
Do you tend to use the free
extra features?
A total of 7 responses said
that theyrarelyuse the free
extrafeaturesmeaningthat
as a magazine I wouldonly
occasionallyincludethem
withinamagazine edition.
For example Imayinclude
themquarterlyratherthan
everyissue like ‘KERRANG!’
oftendoes.Notone response
said‘Yes’,thismeansthat
none of the respondentsuse
everyextrafeature.This
suggeststhatmany of them
getwastedand as a company,
each feature coststobe
printed;therefore,the
magazine companyiswasting
moneyonfree extrafeatures
that theirreadersdonot
want.
