2. The Majority of participants who
answered my survey were female
suggesting that the results are bias
and therefore not dependable in
this circumstance. When producing
my magazine I will think about the
male audience as well as the female
audience with the aim to appeal to
both genders so that there is a even
split between male and female
readers (taking ‘other’ into
consideration also). This will mean
that the magazine will sell to each
gender equally.
3. I decided my target audience would
be 16-35 however my data is
unreliable as my questionnaire was
mostly answered by 16-18 year olds.
This means the results I have
gathered are bias and do not reflect
the opinion of my entire audience. I
will need to take this into
consideration when planning and
producing, perhaps doing further
research so that my magazine will
appeal to the entirety of the
audience.
4. The Results show that only 12% of
the participants buy Indie Music
Magazines often. In contrast, 66% of
the participants rarely buy them-
When producing my Magazine I will
keep this in mind by attracting the
people who read them rarely-
making it different from magazines
currently on the market in the hope
that I can offer them what these
other magazines do not, therefore
attracting them to purchase. As Well
as this I will aim to attract the
people who read the magazine
often by giving them relatable
content.
5. Magazine Title
The results showed that 36 out of
50 of the participants had
purchased NME in the past,
suggesting that the majority of the
people prefer reading magazines in
this style- I Should use this as a basis
for my magazine. Compared to
NME, Under the Radar magazine
had been purchased 9x less
suggesting that the differences that
Under the Radar has are the main
points that I will address. Shindig,
which is a more of a niche had been
read by only 4 of the 50
participants, suggesting that a niche
magazine is less successful.
6. Written responses generally suggest
that the cover and the artists
featured as well as the genre that
the magazine attracts them to
initially buying the magazine. When
producing my magazine I will study
the competitors that had been
bought the most by participants,
considering the artist displayed on
the covers and within the magazine,
the layout of the magazine and
cover and the style of the magazine
in relation to the genre.
If so, what attracted you to that magazine?
7. The proportion of participants that
preferred a weekly publication
compared to a monthly publication
was very similar however the
majority chose the monthly issue as
favourite. I think this is the best
choice as it will allow the magazine
to gather enough content to avoid
repetitive and boring features. Also,
due to the target audience (16-35) it
will allow the magazine to be
affordable as it will be a single price
per month rather than 4 payments
over the course of the month.
8. The participants preferred ‘Fuzzy’ as
the title of the magazine, 69% chose
this. ‘Red Light’ was the least
preferred and will not be considered
as a name. I like the name Fuzzy as
it
It has connotations of the indie
genre as it relates to the ‘fuzzy’
‘imperfect’ sound of the music and
buzz of the guitars
9. 50% favoured the lowest option for
the price of the magazine compared
to 40% who decided that a price
within the £3 range was ideal.
Although the majority would prefer
to pay cheaper, I think that £3 is a
reasonable price because it is
affordable however not too cheap,
affecting the production. The
competing magazines within the
market place have prices around
this, sometimes even more
expensive so this price is appealing
and proven to be successful
accepted by music magazine
readers.
10. Feature
The most popular features expected
to be seen in an Indie Music
magazine are Reviews, Interviews,
Posters, Tour Advertisements and
Artist Contributions. I will aim to
include all of these whilst also
considering the other features and
how I could improve these so that
the readers would appreciate their
presence. Different varieties of each
feature may work for example:
Album Reviews, Single Reviews,
New Artist Reviews etc.
11. Colour
In this multiple choice question, the
main colours that the participants
associated with the Indie Music
genre were Black, Red, Green and
White, scoring the highest. In my
magazine I will aim to use these
colours as my main house colours
and keep my colour scheme very
simple so my magazine is fluid and
connected and so that the it is
recognisable by the use of colour.
12. In my magazine, I am going to
include information on the following
artists- Tame Impala, Slaves, Mac
Demarco, The Cribs, Drenge, The
Strokes, Peace and Fidlar. This is
because these were the most well
known bands in relation to the
participants who answered my
questionnaire, therefore meaning
my magazine will be appealing as it
will attract the target audience by
using bands they have listened to
before.
13. When asked how often people go to gigs, Once a
month was the most common frequency, suggesting
that the majority of participants do attend gigs on a
reasonably regular basis. The Main reason for
attending gigs this frequently was lack of money or
transport problems meaning that if circumstances
were different the frequency people go to gigs may
increase. Due to this, I think that it Is a good idea to
include large amounts of content relating to gigs as
this is of interest (eg- Reviews, Advertisements)
14. The most popular number of pages
was 26-40 which is unusual as the
majority chose a monthly
publication, these types of
magazines usually have up to 150
pages as they are only published 12
times per year. The lowest
percentage of people (8%) chose
55+ pages suggesting that possible
market for the magazine would
prefer quality over quantity. This
means that the pages may be more
ordered and busy, so that suitable
content could fit in the smaller
capacity of space. My magazine will
have 40 pages.
15. The most popular features expected
to be seen in an Indie Music
magazine are Reviews, Interviews,
Posters, Tour Advertisements and
Artist Contributions. I will aim to
include all of these whilst also
considering the other features and
how I could improve these so that
the readers would appreciate their
presence. Different varieties of each
feature may work for example:
Album Reviews, Single Reviews,
New Artist Reviews etc.
16. 92% of the people who answered
my questionnaire were interested in
seeing unsigned bands as well as
well known bands. This suggests
that possible readers are eager to
find out about new music whilst still
keeping up to date with popular
artists within the genre. I will
consider this when thinking about
regular content and feature articles,
aiming to include an even mix of the
two. This will give new and small
bands the chance to be seen as well
as entertain the reader with bands
that they previously like.
17. When asked about where they usually find out about new
artists, 43% used the internet to do so, both through social
network and websites and additional contributions suggested
that ‘Spotify’ was a good source. Few used magazines to do so.
I will aim to change this, incorporating technology into my
magazine- With website links and social media pages (maybe
even Spotify playlists) included in order to make using a
magazine for this more appealing to the majority. By including
readers contributions, word of mouth may also be prevalent,
allowing readers to promote bands that might not be known by
others.
18. 88% of the participants would prefer the
magazine to be written in an informal
tone- making it more relatable and
enjoyable. Despite this 12% did say they
would prefer a formal tone. I will aim to
produce work that is informal however
has aspects of formality so much of the
possible audience feel comfortable
reading. I may do this by using a mix of
slang language and musical jargon as
well as formal speech.
19. Results showed that the price of current Indie Music
magazines effected the readers opinion the most,
causing them to dislike the magazine. I Should consider
this, aiming to attract by having a lower price than
many of the competitors on the market. Many were
concerned about the contents within the magazines
amd the artists included. I will use the data from
previous research and questions in the questionnaire to
ensure that the readers are fond of artists included as
well as the content. The colours used did not seem to
bother the audience so this may not be too much of a
concern for me.
