1. Mise-en-Scene
The costume of the four artists from the band ‘Swim Deep’ are wearing what looks like could be hand me downs or old
clothes, this tells the audience that the way they dress could not be the main priority of the band and that they might be
bringing back ‘old times’ such as the 80s, this could inspire people to want to be like them because they look ‘cool’ and
‘quirky’. The way that they are dressed could imply that there personalities are fun and they are fun people to be around
because they do not priorities the way that they dress, and therefor are not too bothered by what people think of them
showing that they focus more on the way they come across to people and fans, and not just how they look on first glance.
The body language of the artists shows how they are open, fun and quirky. The open body language of the band also
highlights their personalities and fun nature. Two of the band members are playing a hand game while one member
watches them, and this shows that they are childlike and could be seen as funny and a laugh to be around. The facial
expressions of the artists show that they are not serious, and having a good time. The facial expressions show that the
band is fun, and don’t take life seriously.
The setting of the image is outside, next to what could be a river, this makes the artists look like they are free living and are
not materialistic but enjoy good company and outside, the fact that there are reflections of trees in the river, give of the
idea that the band are peaceful and loving. They river is a natural colour, green and blue and there is nothing artificial
about the setting. The colour of the image is all together quite peacefull. The plain background makes the band the main
focus and altogether easier to see,
The positioning of the band with in the frame is done very well. The main singer is at the front looking at the camera with
sun glasses on, so it is not able to tell whether the artist is making direct eye contact. Two of the band members are
standing facing each other, they both have similar hair and this is clear by the way that they are facing each other, and the
final band member is looking down but in between the hands of the two members. Within the band, the members could all
be seen as equal as they are all as known by fans as each other, and this is unlikely with in a band, but it is clear from the
image who is the main singer. Other than the lead singer, the tree behind him could all be seen as equal status. It is clear
from the image that the three band members behind the lead singer are not attention seeking, or crave the publicity or
attention that other singers or bands could be known for. This ensures, once again to the reader that they are a fun and
friendly band, and one that would make people want to be part of their fan base.

2. In this image of Lana Del Rey, she is wearing a plain white, sleeveless top; this enhances her collar bones, pale skin, and
thin arms. This also shows that she is beautiful, without showing a lot of flesh due to her alluring aura. She also has on a
large hat, which gives her a classy look, in contrast to the previous image where the artists do not look, or want to look
classy. The hat is positioned in a way that shows one half of her face is slightly covering the other, this makes her look
slightly dramatic, and elegant and slightly mysterious, which matches her facial expression adds to her alluring aura, her
lips being slightly open, showing a small amount of tooth is a typically sexy pose along with the strait expression she is
pulling. It is clear from the facial expressions of Lana, that she is sexy, and attractive. He makeup is natural and not
excessive, proving to the audience she is a natural beauty and does not depend on makeup to make her beautiful. Her
natural looking shade of red lips is seducing especially to a male audience, enhancing on her perfectly shaped wide lips. Her
long, light brown hair falls seductively and sexily like a waterfall down her shoulder and the right side of her body. Although
her hair looks natural, it adds to the seductive style of the image, and the colour making her look classy and sophisticated.
Lana Del ray has a body language that shows she is confident with in herself, independent and proud. She has her
shoulders back with her chin up and arms to the side of her body. This type of body language could be seen to some as
being ‘snobby’ or ‘stuck up’, but the kind of image that Lana is going for which is sophisticated, is accomplished with in this
image. The way that Lana is standing also enhances her top half figure, her collar bones are clear and her arms and neck
look slim. Her facial expression, summarily to her body language shows sophistication. The way that Lana looks at the
camera is seductive and sexy, but still classy. Her eyes slightly squinted and lips pouted. Her head has been positioned
facing more up than it would naturally, making her features such as eyes, lips and nose look impressively perfect. Again,
the way that Lana is posing could be seen as moody or stuck up, hugely contrasting with swim deep.
The only prop that is used in the image is the large hat that Lana is wearing; this is part of her costume and is the main
focal point of the image as everything else is a neutral, light colour while this hat is navy blue, and very large. It shows
Lana’s sophistication and classiness. The image looks as if it taken on a hill, above a peaceful village. The background is
blurred and the image has a large depth of field, this makes Lana the main focus of the image. The image is taken in a calm
place with a lot of green in the background making her seem like a calm person and also making the image have a positive,
calm vibe.
The image has a high exposure making it look pure and clean, reflecting Lana’s personality. The way in which the image has
been taken where the sky and ground is both in view makes the image bright and look pure. The colours used are all
natural and mostly green from the grass and blue from the sky. I think that these colours give the audience the impression
that Lana is not materialistic, she enjoys admiring the outside world and she is all together a pleasant person.
The positioning of this image is very simple, yet clever, Lana is the main focus of the image as is therefor in the middle of
the frame, lengthways, lana covers the whole of the frame, but sideways, she has the sky and grass on either side of her.
Her positioning has not only made her strictly the main focus, but it has given space and room for a clear background to be
shown, and this is used to her advantage, helping to get across her attitude and personality.

3. In the image, Lily Allen is wearing gold earrings, necklace, and what looks like a dress. The use of all of this gold could make
Lily look what would be described as ‘chavy’, and depending on a person’s initial opinion on Lily they might follow this
about her. Her hair and makeup on the other hand is classy and sophisticated. Her hair is in a full fringe, with a sharp cute
strait line, and the rest of the hair I up in a messy, but sophisticated bun with some bits hanging down. This shows the
reader that Lily is confident to have her hair off the face. Her makeup is quite minimal, her eyebrows are only slightly
shaded in, and some eye liner on her top lid. It does not look like Lily is wearing any foundation, and this reveals her skin is
not perfect, but this shows the reader that she is not trying to be a deception to her fans or audience and is happy to be
seen with minimal makeup.
Her body is facing to the left with her head facing the camera, this makes her eyes look seductive, and makes her look sexy.
This also highlights a non-caring nature, and bucket loads of attitude. Her facial expressions are plain, unlike Lana, Lily’s
eyes are wide, but still could be seducing for a male audience, and her lips are shut. Her facial expression could make her
look grumpy, or miserable, but fans of Lily would know that this is untrue, and know that she is only posing for the camera.
The image is taken in a studio, this enhances on the fame of Lily, and shows the audience that she has chosen to have the
image taken and that it was not a ‘in the moment’ shoots. Although it is taken in a studio and Lily is posing and in costume,
the backdrop is not a regular, white sheet, backdrop, this takes away some essences of the beauty and glamour for Lily,
and any fan of Lily would know that she is not a regular, glamorous singer like some other female artists, she focuses a lot
more on the music than the way she looks and comes across. The background is blurred, showing that the main focus of
the whole image is Lily.
The lighting is dimmed; this brings out all marks and moles on Lily’s face, once again showing that she does have
imperfections and she knows that and does not want to hide this, this shows how Lily is real and down to earth and could
be seen as a likeable character. Some could also see her as over confident because of this, and therefore, not like her.
The positioning of Lily with in the frame shows she is not a girl to be messed with, and also shows her none care attitude.
She is close to the camera, and this shows that she is fearless, confident and has attitude, and it is up to the audience
whether they like her for this or not!
