Another representation study!
Gwen Stefani
• Is represented as an edgy rock artist by her eye
makeup with the look in her eye being cold
and stern, the colour cohesion of her brown
eyes with the brown background, contrasts
with her white hair and skin making her stand
out as a performer. Her red shining lips
representing her as young and bold. The bold
black eyeliner portrays her to be original as
black is a traditional colour.
• the necklaces suggest her wealth representing
that the photography see her as a successful
artist.
• Her hair is gelled back with a 1950s quiff on
the top, creating a wild hair style representing
that she has a wild representation.
• The camera angle is to the side making her
turn her head to face the camera. The camera
is also of a up-close angle representing the
direct address that she is willing to make to
her fans.
Pink!
• Is represented as original and independent from the
smoking eye makeup which compliments the judging look
that her eyes are portraying showing that no one will tell
her what to do.
• The blue background compliments her pink hair due to
them both being pastel colours, I think that this represents
that she isn’t one to go over the top to get peoples
attention.
• The lipstick she is wearing is pink representing her brand, I
feel that this shows how she is different compared to the
other artist who normally stick to the classic red lips,
making her look original.
• Her hair is quite short and goes up rather then down, this
represents that she doesn’t stick to the stereo type of a
women, representing to us her power.
• The black leather biker jacket is traditionally worn by a man,
representing that she is part of the rock genre who in the
past had a wider man ratio.
• There is a contrast in the colour cohesion of the black jacket
compared to the pastel and blue represents her in the
media as standing out.
• The camera angle is a side on view, portraying that this
image doesn’t show the real and complete person that is
the subject of this picture
Suzi quatro
• Is represented as a rock star by her leather cat suit (which was iconic to her
look).
• She stand out from the background due to the contrast of colour cohesion of
her dark hair, make up and costume compared to the white background, these
are traditional and classic contrast of colours which I feel represents the fact
that she is contrasting from the traditional women figure of that time.
• The necklaces that she is wearing have moustaches as pendants, I think that
this represents her as equal to everyone else in society.
• She had very pale skin complexion and pink lips, this represents that the
photography and the audience are more focused on her body instead of
herself as a performer, this thought is backed up by the camera angle shot
including majority of her body.
• She is portrayed as confident due to her facial expression showing that she is
looking down at the camera. To emphasise this the camera angle is lower
down to show the status that she has in society. Her hair is quite long however
looks natural showing that she is a female, yet also is quite masculine.
Blondie
• Is represented as a confident women by her
vibrant lipstick and eye makeup, her vibrant
red lips is making her face stand out, and we
can therefore see the contrast with her pink
eye shadow and green eyes.
• Her facial expression of her chin being
forward and blank face in her eyes represents
confidence as its showing the audience she
doesn’t car what they think of her
• The photo looks like it has been edited to
form a black shadow around the foreground
image to make the subject stand out from the
background.
• The subject for this image has an up-close
camera angle, that has been cropped just
below her shoulders, the fact that we can not
witness no clothes represents her as confident
as its showing the audience she is comfortable
showing off her body.
• Her hair is wavy and in a a-line style,
portraying her to have a messy personality
due to her messy hair style.
Avril Lavign
• Is represented as a dark yet has glimmers of
light thrust upon her, this is shown by the
colour scheme of black and white (black
being dark and white being light)
• The white background makes the
iconography of this photo stand out
representing she stands out in society.
• Her eyes make up is very dark however her
lipstick is very light along with her rest of her
pale skin. Represents her as a dark but
faultless women.
• Her hair starts of light and becomes dark
which is effect used to catch the audiences
eye, this represents her to be natural and
true to her self yet create the person that she
see’s on the inside.
• She has cleavage on display which has partly
covered by her hair, portraying that she is
just a normal women who wants to be
treated like everyone else.
• Her facial expression with her lips slightly off
centre shot and her hair covering her ways
which are slightly looking down at the
camera suggest that she is quite confused
with what currently happening in her life.
Amy Lee
• Her dress is white representing that she is truly
innocent and pure.
• To contrast with this her hair is black, this could
represent to us that she has quite a bold
personality.
• Her makeup is pail, making her look natural
however there is a shadow on her top lip, making
them one look darker then the other, this can
suggest that she looks quite simple, however is not
completely revealing her true self due to the nude
colour of the rest of her skin.
• Due to all of these elements I feel that she looks
quite sophisticated, however she has slightly
revealing cleavage showing her feminine side to
the audience.
• the mise-en sense of this photo shows that she is
surrounded by rocky scenery, suggesting that she
has had a rough journey.
Evaulation
• These 5 different artist have been portrayed to have
quite simular characteristics however all in completely
different ways, I think all of the different hair styles and
make up designs used portray their rock star image
that is complimented by their music, I do not think that
the camera angle and amount of cleavage of each
photo has degraded each artist in anyway, as I feel that
it is portaying the confidence that each artist have to
pull the look off with out looking like they are craving
attention. I think that the iconography in each image
targets the female audience to show them its okay to
embrace and reveal who you are, which is the message
I want to portray in my music magazine.
