1. Band/Artist Images
Owl City
Both low key and high key lighting is used in this picture. The low key is used at the top of the
picture where it’s very dull, cloudy and dark whereas the other areas below are made to be very
pale and light. This also relates to this bands name as you can see the skyscraper zoomed out at
the background that has an informal balance whereas the artist is made to be in front with the
sharp eyes looking towards you relating to an owl. Symmetry is found from the skyscraper as you
can see he reflection of the city in the sea. Also you can see the shadow at his body to show a dark
side. At our perspective, He is made to look up towards us to maybe show depression or even feel
sympathetic towards the artist who makes his songs to be the genre of electronic and also gives
you a nature vibe.
Never Shout Never
High key lighting is shown in this picture in contrasted with what he is wearing; black, blue and
yellow. We can also see that he has a volume shaggy hairstyle with him showing a sign of ‘rock’,
we can find a higher lighting at the edge of his hair to support the high key lighting at the
background or it makes us the viewers the trademark of this artist which would be his hair or his
tattoo. At the edges of the picture, has a beige kind of colour whereas the colour white is
surrounding him. The yellow of his tie may represent rebellion but at the same time, the
background leads to innocence. The rule of thirds is used in this picture as in the primary optical
area, is eye contacting with the audience. Informal balance is found from a vertical view, where at
the left side he shows a sign of rock whereas the rightside, his arm is down. The genres of his
songs are rock and electronica.
2. Nicki Minaj
In this image we can see a high key lighting where this reflects and defines the skin and hair in
order to make this appealable to the audiences. The purple top that she is wearing makes her feel
rebellious and uncontrollable. Also the composition of this is made her to position on the side with
her face looking towards us audiences to indicate that she is seductive. Her eyes looking towards
us would make many different audiences to have their own opinions such as it may make us feel
uncomfortable or again to seduce the audiences which is quite mysterious as well. The genre of
music that she sings would be kind of hip hops and rap.
Beyoncé
In this image is a high key lighting where the background is pure white to show of her innocence
and purity. The lighting in his photo is done to define her skin from the right side where this
reflects her face on the right. Her hairstyle reminds us audiences how her brunette hair to indicate
that she is natural. Rule of thirds is seen in this picture by her eyes being placed from the primary
optical area where is made for us to easily recognise who she is. Informal balance is shown in this
picture where this is made to split vertically, were the level of her shoulders is quite different from
the other. Bu this is done for her to stand out more. Line of symmetry is found from her face when
made vertically as it indicates how her face is made to be prominent. The genre of music that she
sings would mostly be ballad and RnB.
3. Taylor Swift
High key lighting is seen in this picture where the background tends to be located outside a house
full of green or plants, although this is made to be unfocused for us to focus on the artist facing
the left side where she leaves slightly a space from the right side where we would see a dark
blackspace. The colour blonde of her hair represents virtue and innocence where it also implies on
to her princess curls. High-key lighting is indicated at her face where this defines her beauty. We
can tell that the genre of her music’s are country and pop with the audiences of teenage girls and
young adults. This picture makes the audience feel delighted where the contrast of this picture is
very bright.
Emeli Sandé
A slightly low key lighting is seen in this picture where we would feel depression from her facial
expression. The background in this picture is very low contrasted especially made at the right side
whereas the left side it’s brighter. The ruffles on her clothes indicate that it’s for the target
audiences from age 20 -30 who are into slow paced music’s in which she sings for. We can see that
she is not making an eye contact towards us as audience which relates again to her kinds of music.
I think that this artist is quite similar to Adele who also is a music composer who has the same
type of music category as her with the pictures that is taken mostly on the albums to show
despair.
4. Boys Like Girls
High key lighting is shown with a clear lighting on each of the band members where they are made
to attract to the audiences. The blue background is used to link with the emotions that the
audiences are seeing, the guy on front has an emotion of sadness or fright and his hands are
closed and put together to make us feel sympathetic towards him. Rule of thirds is seen in this
picture as we can see how they are eye contacting with the viewers from most of the boys we see
whereas the boy at the right side we cannot see his eyes to probably indicate that he is mysterious
and is quite out of the picture. The two boys behind the front seems to give us an impression that
they are his followers who are both wearing black. I think the genre of this band would be
alternative and pop.
Maroon 5
High key lighting is shown in this picture with a clear background of natural tiles. The boy at the
middle gives us an impression that he is the leader of the group. We find that he looks quite
modern with his hairstyle and his white suit to indicate again that he leads the group and we know
for the fact he is the most popular out of the 5. Whereas, the four seems to be quite old fashioned
with the hairstyles and are wearing dull colours. These four are quite similar to The Beatles were
they may have had the inspired look from. Rule of the thirds is seen in this picture where they all
are eye contacting with the viewers but made in a long-medium shot. The genre of the band plays
would be funk rock and pop rock.
