Representation

Representation Analysis
This ‘Top of the Pops’ magazine cover represents
Lady Gaga (who is the main featured artist) as
glamorous and of high importance. This is shown
through the shot type which is a medium close up.
This shot type shows glamour as you can clearly
see her facial expressions and her ‘look’. Her facial
expression is quite serious rather than happy which
is stereotypical for a music artist as they are seen to
be stuck up and don’t care about anyone else as
they are ‘more important’. Also, her body language
(hands on her hips) represents this. Gaga’s hair and
makeup is done professionally and is a lot bolder
than the average, everyday person. This shows she
is glamorous because she cares about how she
looks and likes to wear a lot of makeup which is
stereotypical of females. The outfit which she is
wearing is quite revealing and provocative which
represents her as someone who is body confident
however, the language used contradicts this. In a
pull quote
next to the image it says “I’m not body confident!”
which gives the impression that she is actually quite
insecure, some people would say that this is quite
unstereotypical as music artists are usually very
confident within themselves as they are in the
public eye so much. Also, the colour of her dress is
green which is also unstereotypical as it isn’t known
to be a feminine colour which a lot of females wear.
It represents Lady Gaga as individual and different
and shows she might be a bit of a tomboy.
This ‘Top of the Pops’ magazine contents page
represents all of the artists (Jessie J, Liam Payne
and Tinie Tempah) as very happy go lucky and very
positive role models. This is shown through their
facial expressions as they’re smiling and looking
straight at the camera. This connotes that they love
what they do which leaves a positive impression on
their fans. This also represents their age as young
people stereotypically are very happy people and are always smiling. Also the use of colours
represents their personalities. The yellow and pink are very bright colours which leave a
positive impression. However, two out of the three celebrities featured are male meaning the
colours are unstereotypical as they are very feminine colours.
2. This ‘Top of the Pops’ magazine
double page spread represents
the featured artist (Nicki Minaj) as
a very individual and confident
person. This is shown through
the use of costume. The outfit
she is wearing is very bold and
different which represents Nicki’s
personality which is very
outgoing. This is stereotypical as
artists within the music industry
are known to be very confident
people as they have to give off a
certain persona when in the public eye. The colour pink which is used is also very
stereotypical as it is a feminine colour which represents Nicki Minaj as quite a girly person.
She is also represented, like Lady Gaga, as a very glamorous person. This is shown through
the medium close-up shot type which clearly shows her face. Her hair and make-up is very
tidy and bold which looks professionally done. Finally, the language used such as “gospel” is
associated with her race which represents her as someone who follows her culture.
