Operation Anaconda Battle Analysis In the mountainous Shah–i–Khot region south of the city of
Gardez in Eastern Afghanistan, Operation Anaconda took place early March 2002. Operation
Anaconda, to this day, stands as the largest reported ground action in the Afghan war. This 17–day
battle led to eight U.S. casualties and over 50 wounded. Operation Anaconda is viewed as a success
due to coalition forces being able to kill and root out several hundred Taliban and al Qaeda fighters,
which left U.S. and coalition forces in control of the Shah–i–Khot Valley. Originally intended to be a
three–day battle with light resistance, a seven–day battle ensued with intense fighting and was

Air support had planned to bombard enemy positions for 55 minutes; however, miscommunication
between Texas 14 and higher led to a short bombardment and a total of six bombs being dropped.
TF HAMMER was unsuccessful in entering the valley due to a heavy amount of small arms fire and
mortar attacks. The lack of air support triggered by bad communication frustrated Afghan and
Special Forces alike and led to Afghan trucks being hit heavily by pre–registered mortar fire on
known choke points by Taliban and al Qaeda fighters. Unity of command is crucial in conducting a
successful military operation: communication flows smoothly through a unified command, but
unfortunately for a non–unified command, the reverse effect holds true. Another principle of war
that was violated several times was the element of surprise. This had to do, however, with a direct
correlation to communication and unity of command. In the late hours of 3 March 2002, the SEAL
team, MAKO 30 was picked up by a MH–47 heading east of the peak of Takur Ghar, which is the
tallest point in the Shah–i–Khot region. A problem was encountered with the MH–47 and the team
had to change aircraft. This placed them off of their suspected timeline and did not allow MAKO 30

The O 1 Bird Dog Essay
The O–1 Bird Dog The First World War clearly demonstrated that airplanes had a promising career
in warfare. With rapid development creating larger, faster and more capable aircraft the task of
putting their munitions on target became increasingly complex and called for a new type of control.
In March of 1942 FM 31–35 defined the role of the Air–Ground Cooperation Parties (AGCP)
(Farmer & Strumwasser, 1967). The role of the AGCP was to coordinate airborne fires in support of
ground units and the AGCP cell was assumed to be located with the headquarters element, usually
detached from the front line (Farmer & Strumwasser, 1967). Through continued evolution of the
AGCP concept the observer was moved further from the headquarters and placed on or near the
front lines to provide immediate tactical control of airborne fires platforms. The AGCP concept
proved to be so effective that it continued development through the Second World War and into the
Korean War. With the predominance of close air support aircraft located far away at Itazuki Air Base
in Japan during the Korean War a ground based controller was ineffective at identifying targets for
the pilots to engage before they needed to return for fuel (Farmer & Strumwasser, 1967). This led to
the airborne Forward Air Controller (FAC). Flying a small maneuverable craft at low levels airborne
FAC's could easily pick out targets unseen from ground level and quickly vector or lead attack
planes to them for engagement. The

Death of a Spy Satellite
Stillman – Case Study
Intro to Public Administration
The Death of the Spy Satellite
Facts and problems:
The problems that surrounded this Spy Satellite case appeared to be a direct result of a lack of
oversight in all aspects of the project. Some of the pronounced facts were:
The project "Future Imagery Architecture (FIA)" was behind schedule and over budget
Boeing, the awarded bidder was the contractor for building the new generation of spy satellites.
However, Boeing had never built these types of spy satellites previously, yet kept reassuring
Washington that it could construct them and that it could comply with the stringent guidelines from
Congress and the satellite agency.
By shifting the responsibility away from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By doing this, Kerr was exuding incompetence as an administrator by turning over absolute power
and discretion to a company who was open about the fact that they didn't have the expertise. This
proved to be the case as Boeing put forth projects by using inductive processes that were failing. By
doing this, the pieces of the project that didn't work, cost millions and didn't work because of faulty
parts. Had they checked out the parts first before assembling the equipment, they might have
realized the parts were defective before they wasted time and money again.
This whole case was a public administrator's nightmare for several reasons. As Rubin stresses, the
mere fact that a clear budget process wasn't planned out and executed within the confines of the
allocated funds for the project. The only time Boeing addressed the plan in respect to the budget,
was when they won the bid for the job and were awarded it. After that, it was more 'trial and error'.
Secondly, I find that this project lacked oversight of a strong panel / board / committee to check the
progress along with expenditures vs. budget. This was public money that was budgeted for a project
and yet, there was no clear division between the payer and the decider as Rubin explains in "The
Politics of Public Budgets". As she states there are two critical characteristics of public

Teaching ESL Writing (Final Paper)
Teaching ESL Writing
At times the plethora of professional journals and the myriad subjects treated therein seems like
little more than a dizzying exercise in redundancy and a forum for education professionals to justify
their worth in a competitive job market; however, I would like to think that there is a hidden value
for those of us whose brains seem to operate in what some might call a "spiral" rhetorical pattern,
that as we work our way around and around certain issues related to composition instruction, we are
moving gradually upward toward broader understanding and better practice. Some studies seem to
do little more than show the need for more studies, their authors falling back on such standard
phrases as, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Having lately read a great deal of professional literature regarding the ups and downs of teaching
college composition to ESL students, I've noticed that students with LDs are conspicuously absent –
a fact that suggests one or more possible conclusions: Students with LDs just aren't represented in
college–level ESL courses; Students with LDs are there but they don't have needs separate from
those of non LD students that would require special consideration by college teachers; These
students are there and have needs requiring special attention by their teachers, but the teachers
themselves lack understanding of what those needs are and how to accommodate them.
Which of these holds most true, in general, is what I've set out to discover, in hopes that I will find a
hidden font of knowledge addressing the singular needs of ESL students with LDs and how teachers
do, or can, meet those needs. The possibility that my first reason mentioned above might be true
leads to a political can of worms I'd prefer to leave unopened; therefore, I'll concentrate on the third
choice – that LD students who are also learning English as a second or other language are merely
going unrecognized due to the masking of LD symptoms behind communicative difficulties
resulting from the hardships inherent in non–native language learning.

Zelus Research Paper
Introduction
The exploration of Mars terrain is offering mankind even more incite into how our solar system was
developed in the past. There are still many sites that have yet to be explored. The region of Mawrth
Vallis is one of the oldest valleys on Mars. It was formed from cataclysmic floods and contains large
amounts of phyllosilicate. These are clay–like minerals that only form in the presence of water.
These minerals can easily preserve microscopic life.
I am going to design a rover "Zelus" for the purpose of exploring this terrain. The rover is named
after the Greek God who is the personification of the term zeal. It inspired by the meaning of having
intense passion and enthusiasm for any endeavor. The rover will collect these minerals, explore
different aspects of the terrain, and discover any other potential information. The data gathered will
in turn help determine if this environment was sustainable for life in the past.

from the solar panels and heat molten salts stored in the chamber. Next, it will heat the stored carbon

CO2 turbine to operate the rover and its instruments. Finally, it is cooled and repressurized once it
has passes through the turbine before coming back around. The carbon dioxide will circulate

Why I Join The Army Or The Navy
Most things in life come down to choices we have to make to progress or to better ourselves. Some
people choose a career in clinics or run their own business or they join the army or the navy. But
then it comes down to which one to choose from. If you were to join one of the two, would you join
the Army or the Navy? People take into consideration of which would suit them better. Some choose
which one is better just by the advertisements, or because a family member was in a military or navy
branch of their own. Even a discussion with a recruiter could change your mind on which of the two
you're interested in joining. There's plenty to take into consideration when it comes down to

The Naval warfare includes ships, submarines, communications, combat training and aviation. The
use ships to transport aircrafts across waters with access to landing strips among their ships for
airborne aircrafts to land. When it comes to the different jobs in the navy they have Healthcare,
aviation, engineering and special warfare. Healthcare consists on taking care of people who are
injured or sick among their ranks as well as being dentists, physical therapists, and other healthcare
jobs. Then there's the duties of the aviation crew which refer to either the flight support team who
are the ones that maintains the aircraft and its conditions and keep track of its functions making sure
it's working properly, flight operations who controls and maintains the flight deck for the aircraft
carriers, or the naval aviators who search underwater from threats above through submarine
communications. The jobs of Special Warfare/Special Operations deal with being a navy seal, navy
diver, aviation rescue diver, special warfare combatant–craft crewman, or an explosive ordinance
disposal technician. There's plenty of possibilities inside of being a marine in the navy. It'll have its
ups and downs but it could offer plenty of opportunities that appeal to an individual as yourself in
numerous ways. The Army is a branch from the military that is based on land unlike the marines

The advancement and progression of aerial surveillance and reconnaissance has been a driving force
primarily for military means, however the initial airborne photos were in fact taken by our civilian
counterparts. As far back as 1783, the Montgolfier brothers of France constructed a hot air balloon
which would be the vehicle for the introduction of manned ascent, and then in 1794 the French
Army used the balloon L'Entreprenant as an aerial observation platform at the Battle of Fleurus
adding a significant contribution to their victory over the Coalition Army.

What is inclusive education and how will this shape your teaching practice? 3142/7278EBL –
Assignment 1 1 Introduction An inclusive education upholds the ideals of an equitable society
where access to and successful participation in education are considered to be the right of every
person in that society. This paper will argue that whilst some steps have been taken to ensure equity
in education for all, there is still a long way to go before Australia can provide a truly inclusive
educational experience for all participants. It will be shown that there are deficit based and systemic
approaches to exclusion and that rather than promote inclusiveness; these approaches place the

'Needs' according to Thomas & 3 Vaughan (2004, p. 19), can be seen as a 'bottomless pit' of
problems. Roaf and Bines (cited in Thomas & Vaughan, 2004, p. 16), suggest that rights and
opportunities are a more effective way of describing the educational needs of all learners, whether
'special' or not. Placing the onus on students to make themselves fit the education mould will never
lead to successful outcomes for everyone, nor does it encourage a cohesive and inclusive society,
therefore deficit based approaches are not acceptable. The second explanation is the 'systemic'
approach which places responsibility on the system for poor learning outcomes. The process of
trying to include people by 'normalising' them is a product of ideologies which aim to contribute to
the labour market (Preece, 2001, p. 213). People who are believed to have no perceived economic
value are disregarded instead of value being attributed to their own individual identities and
experiences (p. 213). McIntyre, Volkoff, Egg, & Solomon (2004, p.18) suggests that equity is a
highly variable concept, dependant upon the systems that support the state and in order to achieve
equity the ideologies underpinning society need to be examined. These ideologies are reflected in
the institutions that provide education and are often not conducive to inclusivity. Considine, et al,

arguably more now than at the height of fight in either Iraq or Afghanistan as the theater support for
CASEVAC is limited with U.S. forces preparing to treat casualties at the point of injury for 12–48
hours or longer before EVAC. The X–STAT device could be the deference between life and death if
a casualty sustains an injury to the junctional areas of the body. Without the device U.S. medics and
corpsman have limited resources to manage junctional hemorrhage and these type injuries would
most likely lead to fatalities from potentially survivable wounds. The timeline to initial fielding of
the X–STAT syringe will in the next 30–90 days to outfit the next deploying company with each
individual receiving one per person and each corpsman receiving an additional 5 for aid bags and
resupply. This will require the open purchase of an initial 170 devices.

Uglies Scott Westerfeld Character Analysis
In the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, the character, Tally Youngblood, changes quite a bit. In the
beginning of the book, all Tally wants to do is become pretty and join her best friend in New Pretty
Town for endless partying, sleeping in, and being treated like Gods and Goddesses. However, when
Dr. Cable from Special Circumstances sends Tally on a quest that puts Tally's prettiness at stake,
Tally uncovers a horrifying truth about turning pretty, and her perspective changes completely. She
will do anything to keep herself, and the people she cares about safe from this disturbing reality. She
even gives herself up, to potentially save the lives of millions.
At first, Tally cannot wait to finally turn pretty and spend the rest of her life with Peris, having fun.
She finds life as an ugly meaningless until you turn sixteen, and undergo the operation that changes
your life forever. Tally even risks getting in serious trouble, and enduring loads of embarrassment by
sneaking into New Pretty Town, into the nicest mansion there, just to see Peris. "Tally pushed her

behind becoming pretty, and ends up willing do anything to prevent her and others from turning into

This idea relates to this world today, because sometimes one might be told something untrue. It can

Discrimination Based On Physical Appearance
Discrimination based on physical appearance, or lookism, has had a heavy impact throughout
history. For example, it is a common belief that John F. Kennedy's more favorable looks were a
contributing factor in his 1960 presidential win against Richard Nixon. To a lot of people, it may
appear that beautiful people have an unfair advantage in life. As a result of this belief, a world where
becoming beautiful is a rite of passage for all people seems to have an almost utopia–like quality,
but that is not the case in the dystopian novel Specials by Scott Westerfeld. This book is an excellent
reading choice to open the eyes of people who are under the false impression that physical
attractiveness makes a person superior, and for those who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Tally discovers one of these towns and makes an observation: "Without the lesions making everyone
agreeable, society was left rolling in a constant battle of words, images, and ideas." (Specials 229).
Despite the government's attempts to keep their citizens controlled, the people's conflicting nature
prevails.
Although the special surgery's goal is to make people perfect, Tally still walks away from it with
some major character flaws, one being how conceited she becomes. Being special means she
belongs to an elite group of people that are above the average citizen. This gives her feelings of
entitlement and warps her view of other people. Feelings of superiority effect not only Tally, but her
friends as well. Zane, her former boyfriend, falls prey to Tally's new–gained shallowness. Pity and
disgust replace her love for this crippled pretty. Even his touch repulses her, making her think to
herself, "She'd kissed him, let herself be touched by him – someone unspecial and barely average."
(166). Also affected is Tally 's best friend Shay, who cannot stand Tally 's new behavior. Shay
becomes so angry with Tally that tells her, "You don 't think you 're better than everyone else, just
that you 're the center of the universe." (293) Tally's weakness destroyed her romantic relationship
with Zane and broke up her friendship with Shay.
Fortunately, Tally recognizes the weakness within herself. She expresses to Shay that she

Character Analysis Of Tally Youngblood
Dynamic Character: Tally Youngblood The Uglies is a dystopian novel about a young girl living in a
futuristic society with a very controlling government. Scott Westerfeld's character, Tally
Youngblood, is the protagonist of his novel. Tally changes and progresses as her story is told,
making her a very dynamic character. As you read you discover that she an adolescent who is selfish
and will do anything to become a "Pretty", but as her story goes on her traits change from a selfish,
immature, and outspoken girl to a brave, mature, and caring young woman. Tally Youngblood's
characteristics alter so much due to being forced onto a journey into foreign land to sell out her
friend or else her dream of becoming a "Pretty" will never come true. "Dynamic is a constant
change, activity, or progress" (Google Dictionary). This word describes Tally Youngblood perfectly.
In the novel the Uglies, Tally is a constant evolving character. In the beginning chapters, she
expresses how much she wants to become a "Pretty" to anyone who will listen. She is very stubborn
and knows exactly she wants; therefore, she will not let anything get in the way of that, even if that
means selling out her best friend. Tally is an immature girl causing trouble and play tricks in the first
half of the novel, but her traits change once she is put into a position where it is either Dr. Cable's
way or no way. She is alone braving the dangers and elements on her journey outside the city and
into the Smoke. She becomes more brave and intelligent. Tally's journey causes her to mature and
realize that not everything is about becoming a "Pretty". Tally Youngblood is so dynamic because
she progresses and changes throughout the entire novel. Scott Wersterfeld's character, Tally
Youngblood, has such a diverse personality to accommodate with the society she grew up in. Tally
grows up in a futuristic society with a government that trains you to hate yourself, because of this
society she grew up immature, selfish, and self–absorbed. All the "uglies" are not supposed to want
to stay ugly because the one life goal they are intended to have is to become a "Pretty" and that is it.
Tally's diversity kicks in when she is challenged and has to put her dream to

Managing a group is simply a matter of holding a position of authority and executing inherent duties
of that role; however, being a true leader requires a special blend of personal knowledge and traits
used to shape those under your charge for the better. Great leaders not only strive to shape their

Analysis of "The Moon: Cold, Wet, and Breathing."
The article "Top 100 Stories of 2009 #16: The Moon: Cold, Wet, and Breathing" from
DiscoveryMagazine.com discusses the LCROSS mission of 2009. This is a Moon mission
conducted to search for the presence of water (Barone 2009). The mission is an important part of the
ultimate goal of visiting the Moon and establishing a Moon base (NASA 2005).
The article is written to expand upon what occurred during the LCROSS mission (Barone 2009).
LCROSS stands for Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Spacecraft. The mission was designed to
search for water on the surface of the Moon. Water on the Moon has long been theorized, but
previous moon missions have not found any (Lutgens 2008). The ... Show more content on

NASA used the LCROSS module to take the 2.8 ton upper stage of an old Centaur rocket out of
Earth's orbit. LCROSS then accelerated the Centaur portion towards a dark crater. The best
examples of craters that don't receive light are those on the Moon's south pole.
The LCROSS project according to the article involved three portions (Barone 2009). This includes
the LCROSS module, the Centaur rocket portion, and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter or LRO.
The LCROSS orbiter sped the Centaur rocket up to 6500 MPH and impacted it with a crater near the
Moon's south pole (LCROSS 2010). LCROSS followed behind it and analyzed the plume from the
Centaur portion, sending information back to Earth, until it also impacted with the Moon (Barone
2009). The impact plume stretched to ten miles above the rim of the crater (Braukus 2010). Four
minutes after the impact, the LRO flew through the debris cloud ejected by the impacts. It collected
the raw data of what the cloud plume was composed of and transferred the information back to
LCROSS control where computers received the data and started the analysis.
Computers at NASA's Ames Research Center tore apart the ultraviolet, visual, and infrared
spectroscopy images (LCROSS 2010). This was done under the careful supervision of NASA
researchers who together with these high–powered computers took numbers and turned them into a

Character Analysis Of Tally's 'Uglies'
Beautifully Asleep; Hideously Awake As adolescents progress toward adulthood, a drastic
reformation of both mental affect and moral worldview is commonly experienced. Scott Westerfeld–
in his novel Uglies–illustrates this commonality of human experience through that of Tally
Youngblood, his societally divergent protagonist. The pivotal moments that signify her gradual, yet
distinct moral development are clearly defined in specific segments of text. Moreover, the actual
structure of the novel concretely separates the definitive changes in Tally's moral worldview. It is
through these phases that the Uglies protagonist's character develops from being a slave to society's
imposed norms, to a questioning skeptic, and finally to a self–actualized individual with sound
motives and personal passions. In "Pretty" society, a clearly defined hierarchy exists between
"Littlies", "Uglies", "New Pretties", "Middle Pretties", and "Late Pretties". At age 16, each "Ugly"
member of society undergoes an appearance altering operation to become "Pretty" on the pretense of
social homogeneity. Tally begins her story as a stereotypically trouble–making Ugly, who–apart
from "tricks"–adheres to her society's laws and norms. On one particular excursion–a trick in which
she infiltrates New Pretty Town–Tally makes contact with Peris, an adolescent love interest that
turned Pretty before her. Their dynamic exemplifies Tally's societally conditioned sense of
inferiority, clearly represented by the

focused on deconstructing elements of 90s culture, consumerism, and nostalgia. It's name is a pun
on the term "vaporware," which refers to software advertised by companies in the 90s which turn
out to be nonexistent and nothing but vapor. Vaporwave works remix pop songs, Muzak,
advertisements, startup sounds, and other cultural material from the 80s and 90s, to produce
hypnotic, almost dreamy music. Blank Banshee 1, the second self titled album from artist Blank
Banshee, fuses both vaporwave and trap, a genre of dance music characterized by deep bass drums
and rapid hi hats, and compares the technological utopia predicted by the 90s to our actual reality. ...

The first track on the album, "B:/ Infinite Login" presents us with a representation of the internet: A
building resembling a Japanese temple textured with the Google search bar and the Wikipedia logo.
Nothing is inside except for a lone iPad, which we zoom into to find an abstract space of colorful
cubes. Sites like Wikipedia, Facebook, and Google all tend to feature "clean," minimal layouts. Like
a temple, this grants them a sort of sacredness, where it is impossible for anything to break this static
template. The websites become authoritative and dictate the user experience. We cannot influence or
modify them the same way we cannot change the structure of a building. And yet these virtual
buildings are inescapable. Like The Trial, we are powerless as user of a website to truly understand
anything about them. Attempting to contact a person who works at YouTube or Facebook for help is
nearly impossible, just like how Josef is unable to find out any information about his own alleged
crime. Additionally, it isn't just that websites alienate ourselves from them, but we've also isolated
ourselves from each other. More and more aspects of the Internet are personalized, from Google's
search results to one's Facebook timeline, almost everything is tailored to the individual user. While
this can be convenient and even helpful, it also turns the Internet

Disability or inability means lack of ability. The functional ability of the person decreases as a result
of impairment. For any individual, disability is a situation in which the person finds himself unable
or feels an obstruction to complete the work expected of him on the basis of his age, sex or social or

in performing a work considered to be within the normal limit of any individual. Disability creates

Learning Disabilities Literature Review
Literature Review
March 6, 2003
The first of the ten articles to be discussed examined a training program that consisted of an
individualized, classroom–based social skills intervention. In the study, there were 45 children with
learning disabilities 9–12 years old. These children were in self–contained special education
classrooms. Thirteen children received intervention for 6 weeks and 7 children received intervention
for 12 weeks. The remaining 25 children were in the control group, which received no intervention.
The intervention consisted of the SST and AST programs. These programs were designed to
facilitate social problem solving, role–playing, and modeling of appropriate social behavior. The
children were given the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The children were interviewed to determine whom they viewed as their friends. The parents were
concurrently interviewed to glean the same information. 6 weeks later, parents were audio taped
describing the friendships of their children. Seven themes became apparent as a result of the parent
interviews: discrepancy between parent and child concept of friendship, social immaturity, social
skills deficits, compatibility, satisfaction with relationships, barriers and facilitators, and parent's
role. Three important ideas emerged in the conclusion section of this research study. First,
researchers have not considered the topic of quality of friendship of learning disabled children.
Second, when considering special education placement, it may be important to look at classroom
environment to determine if it is conducive to promoting the formation of mutual friendships.
Finally, mothers might benefit from sensitization to the need for being engaged with promoting their
learning disabled child's social relationships. (Weiner & Sunohara, 1998). A fourth article discussed
learning to learn cooperatively for learning disabled students. Four questions were considered: can
social problem–solving be improved for students with learning problems, will cooperative behavior
increase for students with learning problems, will metacognitive strategy instruction in social
behavior increase the interaction and socialization skills of "shy" as well as "popular" students, and

Intelligence, Surveillance, And Reconnaissance
2.1.3. Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance
The intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) is a main function of airpower, which
integrates the intelligence production activities with activities such as surveillance and
reconnaissance. ISR is an "integrated intelligence and operations function" by nature.
The ISR efforts contribute to the creation of joint integrated intelligence preparation of tactical,
operational and even strategic environment. This results in gaining the effect of situational
awareness, and provides with the opportunity to dominate adversaries in the decision making at all
levels of war – tactical, operational and strategic.
The core airpower attributes height, speed and reach, provides with ... Show more content on

Thus it is most likely to be a role, applicable with service, agency or organisation. Rather it is more
appropriate the approach of naming the role, used in NATO AJP–3.3 "Allied Joint Doctrine for Air
and Space Operations" – "contribution to ISR", which addresses the airpower as contributor.
The main activities, which comply with the definition and core attributes of air power, are
surveillance and reconnaissance. While performing the surveillance and reconnaissance, airpower
contributes to the intelligence and enables the achievement of the "situational awareness" effect.
Separating these three functions will lead to loss of effectiveness.
2.1.3.2. Surveillance
Surveillance is defined as operations which include "systematic observation of space, aerospace,
surface areas, places, persons or objects, by visual, aural, electronic, photographic or other means"
[15]. The aim of conducting surveillance is to provide with indications and warning about the
adversaries' activities and potential or actual threats of different origin. Surveillance is a persistent
monitoring of the environment in order to detect any changes.

Historical and Current Roles of Families and Parents Essay
Historical and Current Roles of Families and Parents
The central theme of this essay is empowerment and the roles that parents, schools and professionals
take on in the quest for the best educational decisions for those children with disabilities and those
children that are gifted and talented. It is important to understand the historical development of
family–professional relationships to fully comprehend the significance how far we've come and how
far we still need to go. In Chapter One, the authors discuss the eight major roles that families and
parents have experienced over time. These roles range from the eugenics movement (1880–1930)
which pointed to the parents as the sole cause of a child's disability to today's ... Show more content

Chapter 2
SCHOOLS AS SYSTEMS: THE CONTEXT FOR FAMILY–PROFESSIONAL
COLLABORATION
Chapter two describes the general education reform movement that has resulted in enhanced
curriculum for all students. There has been a separate reform movement in special education that has
also resulted in restructuring student placement and service delivery systems for these students.
Most recently, the two reform movements are beginning to converge. The general education reform
was started when a national commission report, A Nation at Risk, recommended educational
improvements because U.S. students did not compare favorably in testing results with their
counterparts in Japan and Germany. This has resulted in local school districts taking more direct
responsibility for decision–making that would affect all students and has included a stronger parent
role in advocating for change. Along with this type of school reform, there has been a focus on
schools providing comprehensive services for students and families that face multiple hurdles so
that families can have their needs met for social, mental and public health services and coordinated
in a single point of entry– the school. The special education reform movement established a free,

Response to Intervention in the Class Room Essay
Response to Intervention Response to Intervention (RtI) is a framework based off the problem
solving method that integrates assessment, and targeted instruction, within a multi–tiered
intervention system. Implementation of RtI in schools is crucial to identify which students need
additional intervention that will help increase their literacy skills, and prevent them from falling
behind. RtI is based off multi–leveled tiers that are each categorized by the intensity of the
intervention that is being used. The RtI framework is also used as a valued tool in monitoring and
improving student behavior in the classroom through a model known as Positive Behavioral
Intervention Support (PBIS). RtI was designed to provide early intervention to ... Show more

If the appropriate progress is not made by a student in Tier III in a timely matter, the next step would
be to test the student for any learning disabilities that are hindering their literacy skills. RtI works at
its best when personal from across the school, including administrators, general education teachers,
special education teachers, supplemental specialists, music and gym teachers, and counselors all
collaborate to support the framework, because each staff member shares equal responsibility for the
success and failure of all students (Shapiro 2011). RtI needs the full support of all staff members,
because it does not show immediate results and could take between 3–5 years to see its positive
impact. RtI gives schools the chance to correct literacy issues, and fix the problem early, before
students' progress forward where they pay for it long into their future. RtI also helps implement
behavioral interventions in the classroom through a similar process called Positive Behavioral
Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is based on a problem–solving model and aims to prevent
inappropriate behavior through teaching and reinforcing appropriate behaviors (Sandomierski,

instruction that is beneficial to all types of students with

Cable tells Tally, "'Then I'll make you a promise too, Tally Youngblood. Until you help us, to the
very best of your ability, you will never be pretty" (Loc 1309). After hearing this, Tally reluctantly
agrees to help Dr. Cable find Shay. This moment is important because it symbolizes weakness and
selfishness in human nature. Sometimes, we are willing to go against someone we love if it benefits
ourselves. Tally wants to be perfect so badly that she is willing to turn her friend in to the authorities
to get the operation she wants. Dr. Cable gives Tally supplies to get to the Rusties and a heart–

Reading And Writing On My Life
If I said that reading was important to me right now, I would definitely be lying. I can't sit down for
extended periods of time and enjoy a good book like I used to. When I was in elementary school,
and even when I was going into high school, I was never seen without a book. When I was younger
I could finish a new book every single week. But it was very easy for me to fall out of love with
reading as I was being introduced to new technologies. It started with a Nintendo Wii. Sometimes I
find it difficult to admit that I even owned one, but the best way to get over embarrassment is to talk
about it right? Never the less, it was the beginning of the end of my love for reading. My earliest
recollections about reading and writing were very enjoyable for me. Reading had a huge impact on
my life. In a way, I guess you could even say that some of these experiences made me as literate and
knowledgeable as I am today. It was the first time in my life that I can truly remember feeling
genuinely good about myself. A while after I had gotten a Nintendo Wii, I got my first cell phone. It
was a Nokia. Obviously it was nothing special, but at the time it was extremely useful and I loved
having it around. I then moved on to own an HTC and now an IPhone. And not long after I got my
IPhone, I bought a Playstation 4, an Xbox 360, and a Playstation 2. I honestly believe that
technology was the main reason I stopped reading. Now that I have been out of the habit of reading

season was above all the last eight years, bringing in profits of over 1.25 million dollars. With this
exceptional staff returning for the 2017 season, we feel profits of 1.5 million for the 2017 season is

of 2015. Our goal for the 2017 season will be to average one "Full House" every week we are open
for the season, for a total of 26 nights of having a "Full House". To help achieve this goal we will be
targeting the middle–class families and people who travel with their pets.
We will have a $50,000 marketing budget for the 2017 season and this plan will outline the areas the
funds will be spent, how they will be spent and who we will be marketing too. Some of the funds
will be used to expand our marketing potential and some will be used to market that potential. Some
funds will be used in new ways while others will be expanding older marketing elements that are

The History of Special Education in the Twentith Century
During the twentieth century, drastic changes were made to vastly improve the special education
system to ensure that all students, regardless of their ability, were given equal rights according to the
Constitution of the United States. During early colonial America, schooling was not mandatory and
it was primarily given to the wealthy Anglo–Saxon children (Carlson, p230). Children were mainly
taught in the home or in a single room schoolhouse. Therefore, children of limited mental capability
were not likely to be schooled. Also, in a non–graded schoolhouse, children of differing abilities did
not pose problems. With the beginning of mandatory education in 1852 ... Show more content on

In these special classrooms, a specially trained teacher would provide the instruction. As ideal as
this might sound, it is hardly what did occur. The optimism of the educators to successfully teach the
disabled students faded during the 1930's and the 1940's. Special education classes were held under
horrible conditions. The rooms were insufficient, with limited resources, the teachers were poorly
trained and the curriculum was inadequate. Schools also often classified students as having
disabilities when they did not. Additionally, students were often labeled with one type disability
when they had another. This practice (misclassification) (Turnbull et al p16) was a common
discrimination in American schools. One might wonder why the conditions were so deplorable. Why
were the teachers so terribly unqualified? It appears that the common perception of the disabled
students was like that of Quasimodo, in Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. They were
misunderstood, and considered to be monstrous––something to be hidden away, shunned and
rejected by 'normal' people. The public's attitude with disabled children was one of fear, as if the
disability was somehow contagious. They were looked upon as 'crazy' people. This general outlook
set the standard for educating students with special needs. They were classified as inferior, so why
should the school system bother to work with 'the retards'? The mind–set was that these students

Themes In Scott Westerfeld's Uglies And The Third And...
Imagine if an individual conquering his/her largest challenge presents one with an incredible reward.
Surprisingly, this idea is shared between three uncommon literature works. Within Scott Westerfeld's
Uglies, the main character, Tally Youngblood, triumphed through an exhausting and tough journey
to a place that leads her to learn about self–worth. Furthermore, The Third and Final Continent
describes the narrator, Jhumpa Lahiri's, adventure of his life through three continents and poor living
conditions during that time resulting in Jhumpa Lahiri finally finding a value in life. In Rudyard
Kipling's poem, "If", the audience witnesses if statements that express if someone conquers the
troubles in their life, the world will be theirs. Incredibly, among three unlike compositions, a
common theme, overcoming obstacles and being honored with a sentimental reward, is conveyed
through plot, cause and effect, and characterization. Between Uglies and The Third and Final
Continent, the moral surpassing struggles and receive an award is displayed through the literary
device, plot. For justification, both storylines included developed characters, an exposition, a
descriptive setting, one or multiple conflicts, necessary rising and falling actions, an intense climax,
and a resolution. As evidence, Tally, from Uglies, defeated her rough trip to her destination and
enjoyed her freedom as she "fell into the routines of the Smoke" (Westerfeld 218). Generally,

Analysis Of The Book ' The Hunger Games ' By Scott Westerfeld
Freedom of choice, the transference of power away from and to the oppressed, and rebellion against
societal norms: these are some of the many ingredients of a book that hailed a new approach toward
writing, trailblazing a whole subgenre of fictitious works. This book, a book which will stand the
test of time, embodies the female struggle in an oppressive society. This book, Scott Westerfeld's
Uglies, will survive as it became a beacon in the new style of young adult dystopian novels with
female protagonists. This book, much in the same way that Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre inspired
writers like Jean Rhys to write Wide Sargasso Sea and Gilbert and Gubar to pen the first edition of

This name, while not as dehumanizing as Rochester's other signifiers of choice, diminishes Jane to
the level of a child, once again placing Rochester in a position of power over Jane.
The concept of naming as a tool to shape relationships is a time–tested literary tool, which in
addition to being employed in Jane Eyre, also features as a major discourse in Uglies. "Uglies' slang
is...ugly. It's all about giving people nicknames that highlights their ugliness–Skinny, Squint," the
difference between Uglies' use of naming and Jane Eyre's use of naming is that in Uglies the young
adults impress upon each other these oppressive names rather than a more privileged individual
bestowing the names, which lower their own self esteems(Wilkinson 10). This tactic of encouraging
self–depreciating names is a practice which internalizes the need in the young citizens to live for the
day in which they turn sixteen and can be "reprieved" of their undesirable traits, their skinny frames
and squinty eyes. Stylistically, the two books can be compared on the use of character foils to
indirectly characterize the main protagonist; character foils, a subtle, indirect characterization
formed by comparison of characters, appears in the foil of Jane Eyre and Bertha Rochester and the
foil of Tally Youngblood and Dr.Cable. In The Madwoman in the

The Uglie Critical Analysis
According to Merriam–Webster dictionary, the word realization is defined as, "an act of becoming
fully aware of something as a fact." Being able to realize the ultimate desires and goals in life is
apart of each of the texts. In the book The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, the story shows characters
realizing objectives through point of view when Tally Youngblood is faced with the truth about
getting an operation to become pretty. Likewise, in "The Third and Final Continent" by Jhumpa
Lahiri, the message of realization is developed through symbolism of the narrator's experience in a
new world. The theme as shown in "The Art of Resilience" by Hara Estroff Marano is expressed
through conflict. The use of point of view, symbolism and conflict create the theme, a person must
become self–aware to realize their goals, in the texts The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, "The Third and
Final Continent" by Jhumpa Lahiri, and "The Art of Resilience" by Hara Estroff Marano. In The
Uglies, the lesson of becoming self–aware is communicated through the main character, Tally
Youngblood's, point of view. At first, Tally Youngblood longs to receive an operation to turn herself
pretty after being viewed as ugly most of her life. After she was denied the surgery because of
complications with a friend, she started becoming sensitive about the label given to her. The author

Becoming pretty and the operation itself represents alcohol, and the lesions, alcoholism. Scott
further explores this link through the two most prominent characters, Tally Youngblood and her
friend Shay.
Tally Youngblood cannot wait to turn sixteen and get the operation that will turn her from an ugly
into a pretty, where she can move into Pretty Town and worry only about having fun. However, her
friend Shay decides she would rather stay ugly and runs away before she gets the operation herself.
The authorities – known as Specials and led by Dr. Cable – tell Tally that she can either find Shay
and bring her back or stay ugly forever. Initially choosing to bring Shay in, Tally realizes that she
was sent not just to find Shay, but an entire settlement of people who decided to stay ugly, dubbed
the Smoke. It is there that she also learns about the lesions, and armed with this knowledge decides
to turn her back on her old dreams of turning pretty. It is unfortunately too little too late though, and
the Specials come and destroy the settlement. The Smoke itself lives to fight another day, but Tally
and Shay are taken back to their city and made pretty.
In the second book, Tally is living it up in Pretty Town. She hangs out with her friend Shay and a
new gang called the Crims in a constant world of partying. Tally is not sure she is Crim material
though; she constantly feels echoes of discomfort with her life as is. The story then takes a sudden

CORONA, the codename for program for the first generations of satellites, allowed the United
States to have relatively recent imagery of any place on the globe. From 1960 to 1972, some form of
the CORONA system was in orbit. In 1962, the fourth generation was given the name KH–4 (Key
Hole, like looking through to see), and the previous generations were retroactively given the
preceding numbers. KH–1 through KH–4B flew 144 missions, returning usable film 102 times. The
retrieval method was one that we would call unorthodox today, but without a way to transmit the
data easily back to earth a different system would need to be developed. After the several thousand
foot roll of film was shot, it was ejected from the satellite in a reentry vehicle. The capsule would
reenter the atmosphere and deploy a parachute. This would then ideally be caught by a special plane.
If the plane was unable to recover the capsule, a military ship was waiting to retrieve it. The next
generation of satellites would start to bring the military and intelligence community the high quality
imagery it desired. This series was codenamed GAMBIT. The first, KH–7 was essentially the same
as CORONA, but with a better a camera. It featured the same single capsule ejection/recovery
system. The great leap forward was when an improved version of this camera was paired with a new
satellite design. The KH–8 featured two or three return capsules, solar panels, and more fuel. This
allowed these

Curiosity: A Robotic Rover
On August 6, 2014, a robotic rover Curiosity, which worth about 25 million dollars, was
successfully landed on Mars and immediately sent back images of the areas around the mission's
landing site. Radioactive isotopes are used for the first time as the power source for this car–sized
robotic rover. As a part of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission, Curiosity was launched on
November 26, 2011, and it was the most ambitious and expensive exploration mission on Mars in
history. (Wall, 2012) Curiosity rover takes along with a variety of advanced instruments and
equipment, planning to determine if there were conditions for life existed in the past on Mars or to
search for signs of life in rocket around landing area. It would work continuously ... Show more

After the specific mineral elements in rock samples are determined, Curiosity grinds rock into fine
powdery sample and pours it into a chemistry and mineralogy analyze system ––– CheMin. CheMin
then directs a beam of X–rays at the powder and the crystal structure of the minerals deflects it at a
characteristic angle, which allows the scientists to distinguish the minerals being analyzed. CheMin
provided the valuable information about the varieties of the minerals exists on Mars, as well as each
mineral's reserves. Analyzing each mineral on Mars allows scientists to find major leads of
temperature, pressure and acidity of Mars' environment during the time when these minerals were
formed. Therefore, CheMin has the potential to reveal whether Gale Crater is a suitable place for life
exists. (Anderson, 2010) However, whether it is possible to find the signs of life on Mars remains
unsure, since it is an extremely difficult task to make a clear conclusion about life existence on
exterior planet. Nevertheless, by searching for organic molecules, Curious tries its best to find the
solutions to this

Effects of Free Primary Education on Learners with Special...
A SUMMARY OF WHAT I INTEND TO DO.
The research will investigate the effects of free primary education on learners with diverse needs in
the main stream primary schools. (A case of Lilongwe Urban Schools)
Identification of a sample of teachers, parents, pupils, schools.
Distribution of questionnaires, conduct interviews, and observations.
The Data will be conducted from four mainstream primary schools in Lilongwe district.
3.0. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.1. A statement of search method
. Many learners with special educational needs experience a number of challenges in the mainstream
primary schools in which in some way or the other prevent them from receiving quality education.

This is expensive and need expertise to use specialized materials. In this case, if the government is
failing to provide learning materials for ordinary learners, what more to the provision of teaching
and learning materials to learners with special educational needs.
The shortage of teachers and recruitment of unqualified and untrained teachers who did not have
any knowledge on special needs education was also another recipe for disaster because the needs of
learners with special educational needs were not given a priority. (Ministry of Education PIF
document 2000). Thus, it is reported by 1997, more than half the teachers were untrained, compared
with 13% before the introduction of Free Primary Education. The World Bank Report on effects of
free primary education (2004) states that this left learners with special educational needs to struggle
to meet the needs of the school and not the schools meeting the needs of learners with special
educational needs. As such it is to the interest of the researcher to assess on how this has led to low
academic achievement to both learners with special educational needs and ordinary learners.
Poor infrastructure is also another area of concern, according to an article by Ligomeka. B. (2000), it
is stated that the ambitious plan by the Malawi government to boost its education levels by offering
free primary education backfired, largely because of the terrible poor

Operation Anaconda Battle Analysis

  • 1. Operation Anaconda Battle Analysis John Doe Colonel Mustard MIL Battle Analysis March 2010 Operation Anaconda Battle Analysis In the mountainous Shah–i–Khot region south of the city of Gardez in Eastern Afghanistan, Operation Anaconda took place early March 2002. Operation Anaconda, to this day, stands as the largest reported ground action in the Afghan war. This 17–day battle led to eight U.S. casualties and over 50 wounded. Operation Anaconda is viewed as a success due to coalition forces being able to kill and root out several hundred Taliban and al Qaeda fighters, which left U.S. and coalition forces in control of the Shah–i–Khot Valley. Originally intended to be a three–day battle with light resistance, a seven–day battle ensued with intense fighting and was finally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Air support had planned to bombard enemy positions for 55 minutes; however, miscommunication between Texas 14 and higher led to a short bombardment and a total of six bombs being dropped. TF HAMMER was unsuccessful in entering the valley due to a heavy amount of small arms fire and mortar attacks. The lack of air support triggered by bad communication frustrated Afghan and Special Forces alike and led to Afghan trucks being hit heavily by pre–registered mortar fire on known choke points by Taliban and al Qaeda fighters. Unity of command is crucial in conducting a successful military operation: communication flows smoothly through a unified command, but unfortunately for a non–unified command, the reverse effect holds true. Another principle of war that was violated several times was the element of surprise. This had to do, however, with a direct correlation to communication and unity of command. In the late hours of 3 March 2002, the SEAL team, MAKO 30 was picked up by a MH–47 heading east of the peak of Takur Ghar, which is the tallest point in the Shah–i–Khot region. A problem was encountered with the MH–47 and the team had to change aircraft. This placed them off of their suspected timeline and did not allow MAKO 30 with enough time to reach the ... • 3. The O 1 Bird Dog Essay The O–1 Bird Dog The First World War clearly demonstrated that airplanes had a promising career in warfare. With rapid development creating larger, faster and more capable aircraft the task of putting their munitions on target became increasingly complex and called for a new type of control. In March of 1942 FM 31–35 defined the role of the Air–Ground Cooperation Parties (AGCP) (Farmer & Strumwasser, 1967). The role of the AGCP was to coordinate airborne fires in support of ground units and the AGCP cell was assumed to be located with the headquarters element, usually detached from the front line (Farmer & Strumwasser, 1967). Through continued evolution of the AGCP concept the observer was moved further from the headquarters and placed on or near the front lines to provide immediate tactical control of airborne fires platforms. The AGCP concept proved to be so effective that it continued development through the Second World War and into the Korean War. With the predominance of close air support aircraft located far away at Itazuki Air Base in Japan during the Korean War a ground based controller was ineffective at identifying targets for the pilots to engage before they needed to return for fuel (Farmer & Strumwasser, 1967). This led to the airborne Forward Air Controller (FAC). Flying a small maneuverable craft at low levels airborne FAC's could easily pick out targets unseen from ground level and quickly vector or lead attack planes to them for engagement. The ... Death of a Spy Satellite Stillman – Case Study Intro to Public Administration The Death of the Spy Satellite Facts and problems: The problems that surrounded this Spy Satellite case appeared to be a direct result of a lack of oversight in all aspects of the project. Some of the pronounced facts were: The project "Future Imagery Architecture (FIA)" was behind schedule and over budget Boeing, the awarded bidder was the contractor for building the new generation of spy satellites. By doing this, Kerr was exuding incompetence as an administrator by turning over absolute power and discretion to a company who was open about the fact that they didn't have the expertise. This proved to be the case as Boeing put forth projects by using inductive processes that were failing. By doing this, the pieces of the project that didn't work, cost millions and didn't work because of faulty parts. Had they checked out the parts first before assembling the equipment, they might have realized the parts were defective before they wasted time and money again. This whole case was a public administrator's nightmare for several reasons. As Rubin stresses, the mere fact that a clear budget process wasn't planned out and executed within the confines of the allocated funds for the project. The only time Boeing addressed the plan in respect to the budget, was when they won the bid for the job and were awarded it. After that, it was more 'trial and error'. Secondly, I find that this project lacked oversight of a strong panel / board / committee to check the progress along with expenditures vs. budget. This was public money that was budgeted for a project and yet, there was no clear division between the payer and the decider as Rubin explains in "The Politics of Public Budgets". Teaching ESL Writing (Final Paper) Teaching ESL Writing At times the plethora of professional journals and the myriad subjects treated therein seems like little more than a dizzying exercise in redundancy and a forum for education professionals to justify their worth in a competitive job market; however, I would like to think that there is a hidden value for those of us whose brains seem to operate in what some might call a "spiral" rhetorical pattern, that as we work our way around and around certain issues related to composition instruction, we are moving gradually upward toward broader understanding and better practice. Which of these holds most true, in general, is what I've set out to discover, in hopes that I will find a hidden font of knowledge addressing the singular needs of ESL students with LDs and how teachers do, or can, meet those needs. The possibility that my first reason mentioned above might be true leads to a political can of worms I'd prefer to leave unopened; therefore, I'll concentrate on the third choice – that LD students who are also learning English as a second or other language are merely going unrecognized due to the masking of LD symptoms behind communicative difficulties resulting from the hardships inherent in non–native language learning. What is inclusive education and how will this shape your teaching practice? 3142/7278EBL – Assignment 1 1 Introduction An inclusive education upholds the ideals of an equitable society where access to and successful participation in education are considered to be the right of every person in that society. This paper will argue that whilst some steps have been taken to ensure equity in education for all, there is still a long way to go before Australia can provide a truly inclusive educational experience for all participants. It will be shown that there are deficit based and systemic approaches to exclusion and that rather than promote inclusiveness; these approaches place the blame upon either individuals or institutions for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 'Needs' according to Thomas & 3 Vaughan (2004, p. 19), can be seen as a 'bottomless pit' of problems. Roaf and Bines (cited in Thomas & Vaughan, 2004, p. 16), suggest that rights and opportunities are a more effective way of describing the educational needs of all learners, whether 'special' or not. Placing the onus on students to make themselves fit the education mould will never lead to successful outcomes for everyone, nor does it encourage a cohesive and inclusive society, therefore deficit based approaches are not acceptable. The second explanation is the 'systemic' approach which places responsibility on the system for poor learning outcomes. The process of trying to include people by 'normalising' them is a product of ideologies which aim to contribute to the labour market (Preece, 2001, p. 213). People who are believed to have no perceived economic value are disregarded instead of value being attributed to their own individual identities and experiences (p. 213). McIntyre, Volkoff, Egg, & Solomon (2004, p.18) suggests that equity is a highly variable concept, dependant upon the systems that support the state and in order to achieve equity the ideologies underpinning society need to be examined. These ideologies are reflected in the institutions that provide education and are often not conducive to inclusivity. Considine, et al, (2005) describe ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although the special surgery's goal is to make people perfect, Tally still walks away from it with some major character flaws, one being how conceited she becomes. Tally Youngblood's characteristics alter so much due to being forced onto a journey into foreign land to sell out her friend or else her dream of becoming a "Pretty" will never come true. "Dynamic is a constant change, activity, or progress" (Google Dictionary). This word describes Tally Youngblood perfectly. In the novel the Uglies, Tally is a constant evolving character. In the beginning chapters, she expresses how much she wants to become a "Pretty" to anyone who will listen. She is very stubborn and knows exactly she wants; therefore, she will not let anything get in the way of that, even if that means selling out her best friend. Tally is an immature girl causing trouble and play tricks in the first half of the novel, but her traits change once she is put into a position where it is either Dr. Cable's way or no way. She is alone braving the dangers and elements on her journey outside the city and into the Smoke. She becomes more brave and intelligent. Tally's journey causes her to mature and realize that not everything is about becoming a "Pretty". Tally Youngblood is so dynamic because she progresses and changes throughout the entire novel. Scott Wersterfeld's character, Tally Youngblood, has such a diverse personality to accommodate with the society she grew up in. Tally grows up in a futuristic society with a government that trains you to hate yourself, because of this society she grew up immature, selfish, and self–absorbed. This is a Moon mission conducted to search for the presence of water (Barone 2009). The mission is an important part of the ultimate goal of visiting the Moon and establishing a Moon base (NASA 2005). The article is written to expand upon what occurred during the LCROSS mission (Barone 2009). LCROSS stands for Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Spacecraft. The LCROSS project according to the article involved three portions (Barone 2009). This includes the LCROSS module, the Centaur rocket portion, and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter or LRO. The LCROSS orbiter sped the Centaur rocket up to 6500 MPH and impacted it with a crater near the Moon's south pole (LCROSS 2010). It collected the raw data of what the cloud plume was composed of and transferred the information back to LCROSS control where computers received the data and started the analysis. Character Analysis Of Tally's 'Uglies' Beautifully Asleep; Hideously Awake As adolescents progress toward adulthood, a drastic reformation of both mental affect and moral worldview is commonly experienced. Scott Westerfeld– in his novel Uglies–illustrates this commonality of human experience through that of Tally Youngblood, his societally divergent protagonist. The pivotal moments that signify her gradual, yet distinct moral development are clearly defined in specific segments of text. Moreover, the actual structure of the novel concretely separates the definitive changes in Tally's moral worldview. It is through these phases that the Uglies protagonist's character develops from being a slave to society's imposed norms, to a questioning skeptic, and finally to a self–actualized individual with sound motives and personal passions. In "Pretty" society, a clearly defined hierarchy exists between "Littlies", "Uglies", "New Pretties", "Middle Pretties", and "Late Pretties". At age 16, each "Ugly" member of society undergoes an appearance altering operation to become "Pretty" on the pretense of social homogeneity. Tally begins her story as a stereotypically trouble–making Ugly, who–apart from "tricks"–adheres to her society's laws and norms. Learning Disabilities Literature Review Literature Review March 6, 2003 The first of the ten articles to be discussed examined a training program that consisted of an individualized, classroom–based social skills intervention. In the study, there were 45 children with learning disabilities 9–12 years old. These children were in self–contained special education classrooms. Thirteen children received intervention for 6 weeks and 7 children received intervention for 12 weeks. The remaining 25 children were in the control group, which received no intervention. The intervention consisted of the SST and AST programs. These programs were designed to facilitate social problem solving, role–playing, and modeling of appropriate social behavior. The parents were concurrently interviewed to glean the same information. 6 weeks later, parents were audio taped describing the friendships of their children. Seven themes became apparent as a result of the parent interviews: discrepancy between parent and child concept of friendship, social immaturity, social skills deficits, compatibility, satisfaction with relationships, barriers and facilitators, and parent's role. Three important ideas emerged in the conclusion section of this research study. First, researchers have not considered the topic of quality of friendship of learning disabled children. Second, when considering special education placement, it may be important to look at classroom environment to determine if it is conducive to promoting the formation of mutual friendships. Finally, mothers might benefit from sensitization to the need for being engaged with promoting their learning disabled child's social relationships. (Weiner & Sunohara, 1998). A fourth article discussed learning to learn cooperatively for learning disabled students. Four questions were considered: can social problem–solving be improved for students with learning problems, will cooperative behavior increase for students with learning problems, will metacognitive strategy instruction in social behavior increase the interaction and socialization skills of "shy" as well as "popular" students, and ... Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance The intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) is a main function of airpower, which integrates the intelligence production activities with activities such as surveillance and reconnaissance. The ISR efforts contribute to the creation of joint integrated intelligence preparation of tactical, operational and even strategic environment. The main activities, which comply with the definition and core attributes of air power, are surveillance and reconnaissance. While performing the surveillance and reconnaissance, airpower contributes to the intelligence and enables the achievement of the "situational awareness" effect. Historical and Current Roles of Families and Parents Essay Historical and Current Roles of Families and Parents The central theme of this essay is empowerment and the roles that parents, schools and professionals take on in the quest for the best educational decisions for those children with disabilities and those children that are gifted and talented. It is important to understand the historical development of family–professional relationships to fully comprehend the significance how far we've come and how far we still need to go. There has been a separate reform movement in special education that has also resulted in restructuring student placement and service delivery systems for these students. Most recently, the two reform movements are beginning to converge. The general education reform was started when a national commission report, A Nation at Risk, recommended educational improvements because U.S. students did not compare favorably in testing results with their counterparts in Japan and Germany. This has resulted in local school districts taking more direct responsibility for decision–making that would affect all students and has included a stronger parent role in advocating for change. Along with this type of school reform, there has been a focus on schools providing comprehensive services for students and families that face multiple hurdles so that families can have their needs met for social, mental and public health services and coordinated in a single point of entry– the school. RtI gives schools the chance to correct literacy issues, and fix the problem early, before students' progress forward where they pay for it long into their future. RtI also helps implement behavioral interventions in the classroom through a similar process called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is based on a problem–solving model and aims to prevent inappropriate behavior through teaching and reinforcing appropriate behaviors (Sandomierski, Kincaid & Algozzine, 2007). I can't sit down for extended periods of time and enjoy a good book like I used to. When I was in elementary school, and even when I was going into high school, I was never seen without a book. When I was younger I could finish a new book every single week. But it was very easy for me to fall out of love with reading as I was being introduced to new technologies. It started with a Nintendo Wii. Sometimes I find it difficult to admit that I even owned one, but the best way to get over embarrassment is to talk about it right? Never the less, it was the beginning of the end of my love for reading. My earliest recollections about reading and writing were very enjoyable for me. Reading had a huge impact on my life. In a way, I guess you could even say that some of these experiences made me as literate and knowledgeable as I am today. It was the first time in my life that I can truly remember feeling genuinely good about myself. A while after I had gotten a Nintendo Wii, I got my first cell phone. It was a Nokia. Obviously it was nothing special, but at the time it was extremely useful and I loved having it around. I then moved on to own an HTC and now an IPhone. The History of Special Education in the Twentith Century During the twentieth century, drastic changes were made to vastly improve the special education system to ensure that all students, regardless of their ability, were given equal rights according to the Constitution of the United States. During early colonial America, schooling was not mandatory and it was primarily given to the wealthy Anglo–Saxon children (Carlson, p230). Children were mainly taught in the home or in a single room schoolhouse. Therefore, children of limited mental capability were not likely to be schooled. Also, in a non–graded schoolhouse, children of differing abilities did not pose problems. With the beginning of mandatory education in 1852 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In these special classrooms, a specially trained teacher would provide the instruction. As ideal as this might sound, it is hardly what did occur. The optimism of the educators to successfully teach the disabled students faded during the 1930's and the 1940's. Special education classes were held under horrible conditions. The rooms were insufficient, with limited resources, the teachers were poorly trained and the curriculum was inadequate. Schools also often classified students as having disabilities when they did not. Additionally, students were often labeled with one type disability when they had another. This practice (misclassification) (Turnbull et al p16) was a common discrimination in American schools. One might wonder why the conditions were so deplorable. Why were the teachers so terribly unqualified? It appears that the common perception of the disabled students was like that of Quasimodo, in Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. They were misunderstood, and considered to be monstrous––something to be hidden away, shunned and rejected by 'normal' people. The public's attitude with disabled children was one of fear, as if the disability was somehow contagious. They were looked upon as 'crazy' people. This general outlook set the standard for educating students with special needs. They were classified as inferior, so why should the school system bother to work with 'the retards'? Surprisingly, this idea is shared between three uncommon literature works. Within Scott Westerfeld's Uglies, the main character, Tally Youngblood, triumphed through an exhausting and tough journey to a place that leads her to learn about self–worth. Furthermore, The Third and Final Continent describes the narrator, Jhumpa Lahiri's, adventure of his life through three continents and poor living conditions during that time resulting in Jhumpa Lahiri finally finding a value in life. In Rudyard Kipling's poem, "If", the audience witnesses if statements that express if someone conquers the troubles in their life, the world will be theirs. Incredibly, among three unlike compositions, a common theme, overcoming obstacles and being honored with a sentimental reward, is conveyed through plot, cause and effect, and characterization. Analysis Of The Book ' The Hunger Games ' By Scott Westerfeld Freedom of choice, the transference of power away from and to the oppressed, and rebellion against societal norms: these are some of the many ingredients of a book that hailed a new approach toward writing, trailblazing a whole subgenre of fictitious works. This book, a book which will stand the test of time, embodies the female struggle in an oppressive society. This book, Scott Westerfeld's Uglies, will survive as it became a beacon in the new style of young adult dystopian novels with female protagonists. This name, while not as dehumanizing as Rochester's other signifiers of choice, diminishes Jane to the level of a child, once again placing Rochester in a position of power over Jane. "Uglies' slang is...ugly. It's all about giving people nicknames that highlights their ugliness–Skinny, Squint," the difference between Uglies' use of naming and Jane Eyre's use of naming is that in Uglies the young adults impress upon each other these oppressive names rather than a more privileged individual bestowing the names, which lower their own self esteems(Wilkinson 10). This tactic of encouraging self–depreciating names is a practice which internalizes the need in the young citizens to live for the day in which they turn sixteen and can be "reprieved" of their undesirable traits, their skinny frames and squinty eyes. Stylistically, the two books can be compared on the use of character foils to indirectly characterize the main protagonist; character foils, a subtle, indirect characterization formed by comparison of characters, appears in the foil of Jane Eyre and Bertha Rochester and the foil of Tally Youngblood and Dr.Cable. • 71. The Uglie Critical Analysis According to Merriam–Webster dictionary, the word realization is defined as, "an act of becoming fully aware of something as a fact." Being able to realize the ultimate desires and goals in life is apart of each of the texts. In the book The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, the story shows characters realizing objectives through point of view when Tally Youngblood is faced with the truth about getting an operation to become pretty. Likewise, in "The Third and Final Continent" by Jhumpa Lahiri, the message of realization is developed through symbolism of the narrator's experience in a new world. The theme as shown in "The Art of Resilience" by Hara Estroff Marano is expressed through conflict. The use of point of view, symbolism and conflict create the theme, a person must become self–aware to realize their goals, in the texts The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, "The Third and Final Continent" by Jhumpa Lahiri, and "The Art of Resilience" by Hara Estroff Marano. However, her friend Shay decides she would rather stay ugly and runs away before she gets the operation herself. In 1962, the fourth generation was given the name KH–4 (Key Hole, like looking through to see), and the previous generations were retroactively given the preceding numbers. KH–1 through KH–4B flew 144 missions, returning usable film 102 times. The retrieval method was one that we would call unorthodox today, but without a way to transmit the data easily back to earth a different system would need to be developed. After the several thousand foot roll of film was shot, it was ejected from the satellite in a reentry vehicle. The capsule would reenter the atmosphere and deploy a parachute. This would then ideally be caught by a special plane. If the plane was unable to recover the capsule, a military ship was waiting to retrieve it. The next generation of satellites would start to bring the military and intelligence community the high quality imagery it desired. This series was codenamed GAMBIT. The first, KH–7 was essentially the same as CORONA, but with a better a camera. It featured the same single capsule ejection/recovery system. CheMin then directs a beam of X–rays at the powder and the crystal structure of the minerals deflects it at a characteristic angle, which allows the scientists to distinguish the minerals being analyzed. CheMin provided the valuable information about the varieties of the minerals exists on Mars, as well as each mineral's reserves. Analyzing each mineral on Mars allows scientists to find major leads of temperature, pressure and acidity of Mars' environment during the time when these minerals were formed. Therefore, CheMin has the potential to reveal whether Gale Crater is a suitable place for life exists. (Anderson, 2010) However, whether it is possible to find the signs of life on Mars remains unsure, since it is an extremely difficult task to make a clear conclusion about life existence on exterior planet. Nevertheless, by searching for organic molecules, Curious tries its best to find the solutions to this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The research will investigate the effects of free primary education on learners with diverse needs in the main stream primary schools. (A case of Lilongwe Urban Schools) Identification of a sample of teachers, parents, pupils, schools. Distribution of questionnaires, conduct interviews, and observations. The Data will be conducted from four mainstream primary schools in Lilongwe district. 3.0. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 3.1. A statement of search method . Many learners with special educational needs experience a number of challenges in the mainstream primary schools in which in some way or the other prevent them from receiving quality education. (Ministry of Education PIF Document on special needs, 2000) At ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is expensive and need expertise to use specialized materials. In this case, if the government is failing to provide learning materials for ordinary learners, what more to the provision of teaching and learning materials to learners with special educational needs. The shortage of teachers and recruitment of unqualified and untrained teachers who did not have any knowledge on special needs education was also another recipe for disaster because the needs of learners with special educational needs were not given a priority. (Ministry of Education PIF document 2000). Thus, it is reported by 1997, more than half the teachers were untrained, compared with 13% before the introduction of Free Primary Education. The World Bank Report on effects of free primary education (2004) states that this left learners with special educational needs to struggle to meet the needs of the school and not the schools meeting the needs of learners with special educational needs. As such it is to the interest of the researcher to assess on how this has led to low academic achievement to both learners with special educational needs and ordinary learners. Poor infrastructure is also another area of concern, according to an article by Ligomeka. B. (2000), it is stated that the ambitious plan by the Malawi government to boost its education levels by offering free primary education backfired, largely because of the terrible poor ...
