Q2- How does your media
product represent
particular social groups?
What are social groups?
 Social groups are groups of people that spend large amounts
of time together, due to sharing common interests such as
music taste, fashion, age, same sex, same race, same
sexuality, same religion, same ethnicity and the same
hobbies.
How to represent them?
 To represent these social groups in a magazine you need to
portray your genre in a certain way. This can be done through
the images you use (clothes your models wear, stance, pose)
and your text (font type, angles, size). For example ‘we love
pop’ magazine, they represent social groups through age. By
the looks of their magazine they are representing social
group as young girls mostly they do this through age and
fashion. By aiming their magazine at those two factors it is
already to see their target market is teenage girls. Through
knowing this they can then maximize the amount copies they
sell by really channeling their market.
Representing my social group-
Who? How? Why?
 When I identified my social group as indie/rock it was clear which
direction I should take my magazine, indie/rock as a social group
represents all indie/rock music past and present as well as an ongoing
style resembling a combination of rock & roll, mod and brit pop.

 I chose to use my friend to model as he is the same age as my target social
group with a similar style too.
past and present on my cover represents the genre very well.
I attempted to represent my social group by:
 Using a model in the same age bracket as them, by doing this I was hoping
to create a relationship between the reader and my magazine, as they may
be able to relate to someone who looks their age rather than an older
model on the cover.
 By having my model wear clothes that are current it can also represent a
certain group, as certain colours can portray different genres.
