Analysis Question 2:
How are social groups represented within
my product?
Social groups are represented in various ways throughout all magazines, with varying genders and class. For my product, I
decided to focus my magazine on the pop culture side of music, as well as the teen and young adult demographic alongside
it. This would mean finding the correct way to find aspects of the pop culture that will identify with my demographic. I
did so using mise-en-scene of costume and color, to my font and model casting.
Color Palette
From my research, I discovered that bright colors are generally used within pop magazines, alongside some primary colors.
This is due to the fact that the pop genre is usually associated with positivity and fun pop art- like themes. The key
colors are important, as these are what will be one of the main factors that draw in an audience to my product.
Costume and Mise-en-scene
I have made sure that my models were appropriately dressed in a mixture of bright and vibrant clothing. If the costume was
not particularly bright (ie. a black top) I made sure to ensure that the lighting of the images were high key lighting,
alongside making my models have a positive facial expression that was not harsh, to connote the happiness of the genre.I
also wanted my models to have eye contact with the audience, so that they are directly addressing the audience, which may
result in the consumer being more inclined to purchase the magazine.
Font Choices
Throughout the magazine, I had a variation of font choices which coincide with the pop genre. These include large, bold
fonts that come in an abundance of colors as they will be key in attracting an audience to look at them. The masthead was
to be in a serif font unlike the rest of the fonts, as it had to be different as well as be memorable to my target
audience.
Which social group is my magazine aimed at?
My primary audience was predominantly female in the age range of 15 - 24 year olds who have a clear interest in the pop
genre of music, as well as the pop/ hipster side of fashion. These individuals would most likely be attracted to pretty
and attractive models with a bright and clear fashion taste, with a good makeup sense, but not too covering. The target
audience could also be appropriate to the male gender of the same age range, as I included female models who would
typically attract the male gaze.
