2. Lettering
• Lettering is the art of drawing letters, instead of simply writing them.
• Lettering is considered an art form, where each letter in a phrase or quote acts as
part of drawing.
• Each letter is created with attention to detail and has a unique role within an
artwork.
3. Lettering - Sketchbooks
• In art class we are able to use lettering in various occasions. On the following slides
you will see how art students use lettering in their sketchbook. They use it in titles,
subtitles, and key words. It makes all the pages look artistic and attractive. It also
adds a style to each page. The lettering done combines with the sketches.
• Look at the lettering on each example and the way they were used.

a product, service or idea.
11. Advertising
• Look at the following posters and see how the letters look and how they combine
with the image and the idea they are trying to convey. Each poster is selling
something completely different and the lettering used is unique to each one.
• The letters that spell milkshake look liquid and thick just like a milkshake. What about
the other ones?
17. Lettering
• When you choose lettering you have to repeat the letters just as they were design.
You can also create your own. Here are more ideas.
18. Task
• You are going to choose lettering to create your name in an attractive and artistic manner.
You can use the examples of lettering I put on the presentation or you can look for ideas
elsewhere. Use material you have at home (Paper + Pencil or markers, paint, watercolors…
only if you already have it at home or you can even use your computer using Paint or
something similar). You will turn it in once you come back to school. I will be waiting
eagerly to see all your work.
