This workshop presents an accessible framework for understanding sketching to help communication, understanding, and problem solving -- particularly during a design process that includes multiple roles (that don't always speak the same language).
I propose, not only that sketching helps bridge gaps in communication and get to a deeper level of understanding, but also that every kind of sketching activity falls into one of three categories; thinking, talking, and showing.
In this workshop, for each type of sketching we cover:
- Who it helps
- What it is
- When it can help
- Why you don't need to "know how to draw" to use it
- How to be prepared to use it
You don’t even need to know how to “draw” to learn and apply the methods covered here. After attending this session you will be more comfortable with and better prepared to recognize opportunities where sketching can be used to increase communication and understanding with clients, stakeholders, coworkers, as well as all by yourself, as you work through problems and come up with solutions.

2. “SKILLS” KNOWING WHAT U CAN DO.
ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS:
• What can I do?
Ex: Am I a photographer, a writer, a gardener, or a DJ?
• What kind of skills do I have that I can use to my advantage?
• How can these skill help me design my poster?
• For instance: Do I have any drawing skills whatsoever?. Even if you think the
only
thing you can draw is stick figures, use that. Make it into something new.
3. SKILLS
Skills can come from anywhere, you just
need to figure out how the skill you know
can help with your design.
For instance, if you're a gardener you
might try using the same colors you have
in your vegetable or flower garden in your
poster. If you're a dj you can use the songs
you play to come up with a theme for your
poster.
4. ELEMENTS OF A STRONG POSTER
• ILLUSTRATION
• COLOR
• LAYOUT
• FONTS
• CLEAR CONTENT
• SPELLING AND GRAMMAR
A good poster should be both eye-catching and informative.
5. COLOR
• THE COLORS YOU CHOOSE SHOULD MATCH THE CONTENT AND
TONE OF WHAT IS BEING PRESENTED. AN OUTDOOR SUMMER
EVENT SHOULD NOT HAVE A POSTER WITH BLACK GREY OR
ORANGE COLORS
• YOU WANT TO USE BRIGHT COLORS THAT GET ATTENTION.
• YOU DON'T WANT TOO MANY DARK COLORS IN THE POSTER
BECAUSE THEY MAKE IT HARDER TO CATCH THE READERS EYE.
• IF YOU WANT TO USE DARK COLORS YOU SHOULD ALSO USE
SOME LIGHT COLORS FOR CONTRAST AND TO BALANCE THEM
OUT.
• TO SEE HOW YOUR COLORS WORK PRINT TWO BOXES MADE
UP OF JUST COLOR. THEN SEE WHICH OF THE TWO DRAWS
YOUR EYE MORE AND USE THAT ONE THE MOST.
6. LAYOUT
EFFECTIVE LAYOUT INVOLVES BALANCED PLACEMENT
OF BOTH ILLUSTRATIONS AND CONTENT.
IT'S IMPORTANT NOT TO SQUISH EVERYTHING
TOGETHER.
IF YOU DECIDE TO OVERLAY PICTURES AND TEXT MAKE
SURE THE CONTENT IS READABLE.
FONT STYLE AND COLOR ARE IMPORTANT.
8. FONTS
FONTS ARE A VERY IMPORTANT
ELEMENT OF A POSTER. FONTS CAN
GIVE A POSTER MEANING. THE FONT
TELLS THE VIEWER WHY THIS
ILLUSTRATION THEY ARE SEEING
MATTERS.
9. SPELLING AND GRAMMAR
• SPELLING AND GRAMMAR MATTER. IF THE VIEWER
IS DISTRACTED BY A SPELLING OR GRAMMAR
MISTAKE HE OR SHE WILL MISS THE POINT OF YOUR
POSTER.
10. CLEAR CONTENT
THE PURPOSE OF A POSTER SHOULD BE TO GET THE VIEWER TO DO SOMETHING: BUY
A PRODUCT, ATTEND AN EVENT, THINK ABOUT AN ISSUE, EXPLAIN THE NEWS. THAT'S
WHY MAKING SURE EVERYTHING THAT YOU SAY INSIDE THE POSTER IS BOTH
CORRECT AND TRUE. IT'S IMPORTANT TO BE EASY WITH THE CONTENT. YOU DON'T
WANT TOO MUCH OF IT OR THE READER WILL NOT READ.
