1. Who would be the target audience
for your media product ?
Evaluation Question Four
2. Target Audience
My target audience is both male and female aged 15 to late 30’s. The reason I have
decided on this target audience is because I found through conducting research
when asking people who would be interested in my film it was teenagers who
showed the greatest interest. There were also quite a few people in their early 20’s
to late 30’s who also said they would be interested across both genders. Some older
people said they would watch it but the numbers were a lot less. These results are
fairly reliable as I conducted some primary quantitative research asking 37 different
people as well as looking at IMDb Statistics.
These are the IMDb statistics for the film “12
monkeys”, from this we can see that the average
rating is 8.0 males voted slightly higher. As for the
age group under 18’s voted it 8.2 and aged 18-29
and 30-44 voted this an 8.1 which is not a lot of
difference, however ages 45+ gave this 7.8 so
generally for this film would target a young to
middle aged audience. Males voted slightly higher
than females in all age categories so this is also
something else to consider.
3. Target Audience Continued
The results from the “12 monkeys” film opening suggests that my
research is correct as other films in my genre also have the same
target audience. I have looked at more films statistics in detail you can
find these on my blog.
From this research I found my more specific target audience are
teenagers. By including two teenagers in the film, my target audience
has characters to relate to which means they are more likely to be
more engaged when viewing my film. My target audience may also be
interested in films such as “The hunger games”, “The road”, “I am
legend” and “The book of Eli”, this is because my audience will be the
same sort of people as my film is similar to these.
4. Classification category
During my research on classification category almost every post apocalyptic
film has rated between a 12A to an 18 rating. During my film opening it would
have been clear that there may be strong language and violence later on in
the film even though the film opening did not contain any. However there
would be no sexual content so I rated my film a 15. My target audience for my
film will be for young adults in there late teens as they could possibly relate to
this as one day they could find themselves to be in this situation. To expand
my market I would also like to attract older people in there 30s, 40s and 50s
as they could also possibly enjoy it and it would also make my film more
successful if more people watched it.
5. My characters
I made my characters the same age as I wanted my main
target audience to be but I still wanted people to watch
my film opening from the teenage years right up to
people in their 80’s. However I do not want people who
are under the age of 15 to watch it because of the
content. I decided to choose a young character as
opposed to an older one as he would probably be more
likely to survive (therefore more believable) plus this also
ties in with my target audience. This role is normally
played by a middle aged man like the main character in
“The Book of Eli” but I decided to change the normality
of a post apocalyptic film and make the survivor younger.
My second actor is the brother of the main character
who also has survived the apocalypse. The character who
shoots the main protagonist is older which is very
unconventional, the reason for this is I wanted to be
unique and I thought this actor that I used fit the role
really well.
6. Interests
My target audience would be interested in what would happen if an
apocalypse were to occur, how people can survive after the flood, how this
happened and how they survived. They could also be interested in action and
thriller films. Furthermore a selection of the target audience may also play
video games such as “The last of us "or watch a TV series like “The walking
Dead”. This audience for my film opening would be similar to an audience of
other post apocalyptic films. There is also emotion later on in the film so this
also may attract a more wider audience.
