18. Schmallenberg virus is the informal
name given to a recently isolated
orthobunyavirus, which has not been
given a formal name as of January
2013, initially reported in October
2011[1] to cause congenital
malformations and stillbirths in
cattle, sheep, goats, and possibly
alpaca.[2][3] It appears to be
transmitted by midges (Culicoides
spp.) which are likely to have been
most active in causing the infection
in the northern hemisphere summer
and autumn of 2011, with animals
subsequently giving birth from late
2011.[2] Schmallenberg virus falls in
the Simbu serogroup of
Orthobunyaviruses; as of January
2013, it is considered to be most
closely related to the Sathuperi and
Douglas viruses.[4]
19. In March 2012, scientists of the
Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut first
succeeded in producing an
electron microscope image of the
Schmallenberg virus.[14]

28. Infected adult ruminants show either no signs
(subclinical infection) or only mild, nonspecific
clinical signs such as fever, diarrhea, or reduced
milk production for a few days. Of considerably
greater significance is the capacity of the virus
to cross the placenta to cause premature birth,
stillbirth, or the birth of severely malformed
offspring after naïve dams are infected during a
vulnerable period of gestation.
The outcome of congenital infection of ruminants with
Schmallenberg virus mirrors that described for Akabane
virus. Congenitally infected lambs or calves may show
varying degrees of arthrogryposis, hydranencephaly,
torticollis, kyphosis, lordosis, scoliosis, ankylosis, and
brachygnathia, the severity of which reflects the
gestational age of the fetus at infection (Fig. 22.3). The
adverse impact of Schmallenberg virus infection is
greater in sheep than in cattle.
29. • Adult sheep, cattle, and goats can develop fever, diarrhea, and reduced
milk production associated with viral infection;
• however, the most important lesions are observed in fetuses secondary
to circulating viremia and viral replication in the developing fetus.
• Similar to other members of the Bunyaviridae family like Akabane virus
and Aino virus, fetal malformations are the primary manifestation of in
utero infection with the virus.
• Gross lesions include congenital malformations of the fetus such as
torticollis, ankyloses, arthrogryposis, brachygnathia inferior,
hydranencephaly, porencephaly, and cerebral/cerebellar hypoplasia.
30. Schmallenberg virus is
vector-borne, being
transmitted principally by
Culicoides biting midges
(C. obsoletus sensu
stricto, C. scoticus, C.
chiopterus, C. dewulfi, C.
nubeculosus).
31. • The diagnosis of Schmallenberg virus-induced abortion and/or
congenital abnormalities is confirmed by the detection of viral nucleic
acid in fetal tissues (brain, placenta, meconium, or hair swabs),
• or by the detection of virus-specific antibodies in fetal heart blood
(aborted foetuses)
• or in serum collected prior to ingestion of colostrum (neonates).
• Viremia is transient (1–6 days) in adult ruminants, but viral nucleic acid
may be detected by RT-PCR for an extended period in lymphoid tissues,
particularly in the mesenteric lymph nodes.
• Schmallenberg virus-specific antibodies are detectable in the serum for
at least 2 years after infection.
32. Immunity can possibly be
acquired naturally against SBV.
It is possible that the
seasonality of the infection
cycle would not entail a second
epidemic circulation next year,
due to the shortness of the
viraemic period (about 4 to 6
days post exposure, longer in
affected foetuses).
Vaccination is a possible option
for controlling the disease as a
vaccine exists for the similar
Akabane virus.[13]
