Kerrang
1.
2. • Masthead- The mast head on this music magazine is in a
large fount at the top of the cover page. At the end of the
word “Kerrang!” is an exclamation mark which suggests
that it is loud. Also the word “Kerrang” is an
onomatopoeia because it is the sound that a guitar
makes. This is because it is a rock music magazine so the
masthead is targeting their audience because it catches
their attention. The masthead also looks like it has been
smashed. This suggests to the audience that the
magazine is loud because it is a rock music magazine.
• PUGS- on this cover page of Kerrang! There are many
pugs which are highlights of what is inside the magazine.
Also they have made one of the pugs look like a post-it
note and have added a picture of the lead singer in a
band called Green Day. This is to make the front cover
look like a person’s profile.
• The colour scheme is red, black and yellow. This can
suggest the colour scheme of the music festival Reading.
This cold be because Dave Grohl (man on front cover) was
headlining the festival at the same time that the
magazine was released.
3. • The colour scheme for the front cover is mostly yellow,
black and white. This is so that the magazine catches the
viewers eye because these colours contrast against each
other to stand out.
• Teaser/ ellipsis- One of the pugs on the front cover of
the magazine is a quote that has been taken from an
interview with the rock band Paramore. It states “I have
nothing left to prove...” This tempts the audience to buy
the magazine because it is giving an insight of what the
interview is bout so people will want to buy the magazine
to read the interview to see what the story is about.
• Masthead- The masthead ‘Kerrang!’ has an exclamation
mark at the end of the word. This is used as a hyperbole
to exaggerate the article. This also suggests that the
magazine is loud because it is a rock music magazine.
• Top strip/ bottom strip- The top strip and bottom strip
provides the target audience with more information, of
the certain rock bands. This is so that the magazine gives
the reader a sneak peak of what is inside the magazine
when they are purchasing.
4. • The colour scheme is mainly green, black and white. This
is because these are quite bold colours. This also suits the
magazine because it is a rock music magazine so they
need to have loud colours that stand out to catch the
target audiences eye. The colour green also suggests a
link with the band that is shown on the main image in the
cover page. This is because the band on the front cover is
called ‘Green Day’ so they have made certain areas of
the cover page green to connect with the band which is
presented on the front.
• The freebie is shown at the left hand side of the front
cover, titled as “6 Superhero Shots” these are posters of
famous rock singers and bands. These freebies are used
as a source of persuasion as it is a free gift for the
customer. This will make the target audience more
interested to buy the magazine so that they can get the
free posters inside. This then gives the magazine
company an advantage as it is almost like the company
are bribing their target audience to buy their magazine.
• The image on the front cover is placed in front of the
masthead. This is to show that the band on the front
cover have made a return back into the music industry
and Kerrang! Are the first company to get an exclusive
interview with them before any other magazine company.
5. • On the top right corner of this contents page is the
magazines issue number and cover date. This is to show
the audience when the magazine was released and to
make sure the customer is still up to date with the
magazine.
• On this contents page Kerrang! continue to use their
house colours. For example each box out is black with a
yellow text. This is used so it catches the customers
attention because the colours black and yellow contrast
against each other to stand out.
• There are clear subheadings used on this contents page.
This is show that it is organised and makes it easy for the
customer to find the page that they are looking for.
• The main headliner for this magazine is the band
Paramore and we know this because the main image is
the band at the top. This image is bigger than the other
images on the contents page because the band are the
main article inside of the magazine.
• The page numbers are in a bold and in red. This is
because they stand out so it catches the customers eye so
that the customer can easily find the page that they are
looking for. They have also used the colour red because it
is one of the house colours of Kerrang!
6. • The main image is situated in front of the masthead.
This is to show the customer who is featured in the
magazine clearly so it attracts them into buying the
magazine.
• The costume on the main image is also the same
colour as the masthead. This is to show a contrast
between the cover lines and the masthead to catch
the customers eye so that they are drawn to the
main stories that are inside of the magazine.
• The masthead is made to look like it has been spray
painted on to the cover page. Also the letter “O” in
the masthead is the logo for the magazine. This is to
show to the customer exactly what company the
magazine is and to show that the magazine belongs
to that company and it isn’t like any other magazine
company.
• The magazine also uses their logo as bullet points for
their cover lines. This is to show that the stories
inside are exclusive to the magazine. Also the
magazine uses rhetorical question. This is to tempt
the viewer into buying the magazine to read the
articles inside.
7. • The images that are used on this contents page are
from the stories inside of the magazine. Also the
page numbers are situated in the bottom left corner
if each photo so that the customer can easily find the
page with the story what they are looking for.
• The page numbers are also in red , this is to stand
out to the customer so that they can easily find the
page they want.
• There are also 4 main titles used on the contents
page. The title Portal is to show where all of the
articles about new films are situated inside of the
magazine. Features are to show where all the articles
are featured in the magazine and on what page.
Reviews are to show what other people think about
the films that they have featured in their magazine
so that the audience can get different opinions about
a film. The title Every Issue is to show what will be
featured in next weeks magazine and what to expect
in future issues.
8. • The masthead is in red because it is a bold colour
that stands out to the customer and it is eye catching
so it makes the customer notice the magazine. Also
the colour of the masthead is the same colour as one
of the cover lines. This could be used to show to the
audience and to tempt them into that buying the
magazine to read the article inside.
• The woman that is used as the main image is
wearing a classy dress. This suggests that the
costume even matches the genre of the magazine
because it is a classy fashion magazine.
• Also some of the cover lines are in a gold font. This
suggests the magazine is the best that it can be and
has a very high standard that it fulfils to achieve
every month when they release an issue.
• “Fashion at your fingertips” also tempts the audience into
buying the magazine because it suggests that if the
audience buys the magazine then they can get easy
fashion tips.
9. • The main image on this contents page is large so that
the viewer can see what is featured inside of the
magazine and what page they have to go to in order
to find the article .
• There are also four main titles on this contents page
to make it clearer to the customer where each page
is situated. The tile ‘spy’ tells the audience where
each page is to find the articles about the cover
story. The title ‘features’ tells the audience where
they can find all of the people and stories that are
featured in the magazine. The title ‘fashion’ tells the
audience where exactly they can find all of the pages
that have articles about fashion and fashion tips.
Also the title ‘beauty’ tells the audience what page
they can find the articles about beauty products.
• A disadvantage about this contents page is that the
page numbers are in a really small font so the viewer
will find it difficult to try and read what page the
article they are looking for is on.
